Deep within the depths of his lair, surrounded by his lifes work that glowed, squeaked, wobbled, pulseated, jittered, and floated, sat a very focused man. A ginger, but that wasn't really something he could help, now could he? There wasn't much to be said for this man. He was married, from the dangling jewel in his left ear, he was too distracted to eat, from the pile of untouched food and partialy eaten sandwiches, and probably hadn't shaved in a few weeks judging from the rather fine beard he was now sporting. Still, in all the chaos there was one little place of pure order. A ceremonial robe of red fine fabric, a velvet and silk mix, draped over a sewing form for proper mending of the golden bird filligri. The golden silk threads, strung through fine bone needles, stuck out from a little pincushion in the shape of a sheep to the point that the sheep seemed to have golden fleece itself. The man, Alchemist and a damn good one, glared every so often at the fine robe. Perhaps resenting its symbol, perhaps just hating the color, perhaps loathing when he would again wear it and be away from where he loved to be.

*Clang! Squee! Whrrrrr! Hiss!*

"No! No, no, no, no, no! " Yelped and pleaded the Alchemist as he seemed to dive across the work table ( which was starting to look suspiciously like the commandeered kitchen table) to a bubling, boiling, strange mixture in a sphere of glass. "Not yellow! Why are you turning yellow? What in the clouds possesed you to turn yellow!" It really was devistating. The color that is. It was supposed to be magenta! How was he supposed to give a health potion that was the color of piss away? Everyone knew that health potions were supposed to be some weird hue of red. Sprawled out on his stomach, cradling this yellow sphere of glass in his hands, the Alchemist brought it close to his face. The mixture, he swore, was glaring at him. Or, was it his own face glaring at himself in the reflection of this utter failure? "I don't like you." he muttered with a growl. "At least you aren't..." The liquid seemed to respond to his thoughts, the colors changing before his eyes. And boy, did those green eyes glare at the sight it saw. "Purple! "

Purple. The blasted potion was purple. He hated the color purple now. It was filthy, disgusting, and filled with excess in his eyes. Unlike blue. He was rather fond of blue. Blue was cool.

It was almost like the magicks were mocking the alchemist. He couldn't do any more than just stare at his failed attempt at some sort of potion. It had been health at one time, but that was so simple. So easy. Not even worth his time. But what had he been working on? A glowing orb that slowly healed over time. That's right. He was working on bottling the healer's touch. And he almost had it. It would have been amazing, saved time, energy, men and women from the front lines and from themselves.

From his prone position, it was hard to tell if the blasted thing would turn colors again. It was all so depressing. Papers shuffled under him, knick-knacks clinked and bumped against one another, candleabras threatened to fall as he rose to sit on his kness on the table. "Why do I even bother? It isn't going to work. Not the last thousand times, not this time, and not the next thousand times." Still, it was a cool little light bobble. "I could always add you to the string of lights. Yes. I might just do that. One should embrace failure with success, or so I say. Never really believed that. " Yes... Zel Althos, Chancellor to the King, Grand Alchemist of the Arcanium, was talking to a globe of purple light he made. And he was sitting on a table surrounded by half completed experiments with half touched food just out of reach.

And what was worse; his tea had gone cold two weeks ago. Probably started a civilzation by now. It might be on space travel.

Unbeknownst to the dear wife of said alchemist who was standing outside the front door to their little home when she went inside the door she was going to find herself faced with a mess that only a man who had been single for many years could have made. This would be her payment for coming home early. With a happy grin Kinley opened the door and stepped inside quickly, making sure the door was tightly secured before she made her way further into her home. "I'm ho--" She had began to say but quickly stopped when she noticed the mess. Laundry was scattered everywhere which could only mean that Zel had locked himself up in his room to work on something. "Why couldn't he have just dirtied that room?" Kinley sighed and hung her cloak up and took off her shoes before she braved whatever mess he had made throughout the rest of the house, let alone his work room. When Kinley finally made it to the door she quietly tried to open it so as not to disturb her husband who was probably hunched over something, trying desperately to create something that would help thousands. At least that's what he usually seemed to be working on when she had went into the room to make sure he was fed or to drag him off to sleep.

When she entered the room she found her husband talking to a purple liquid. Kinley had gotten used to the fact that he often talked to inanimate objects. It was what made him, well him. In all honesty she found it kind of cute but other people might have probably thought he was slightly crazy. Which he might have been but Kinley loved him regardless. With light footsteps she tried to be as quiet as she could as she sneaked over to him, his back facing her before she gently put her arms around his shoulders and hugged him tightly. "You should eat all your food. It wouldn't be good if the Grand Alchemist keeled over from starvation. Not to mention I'd be extremely sad and lonely." Kinley smiled and gently kissed his cheek, her arms still wrapped around the tops of his broad shoulders. Whatever it was he was working on it could wait now. She'd been gone for a few weeks and she was determined to catch up on what she had missed while she was away. Not to mention spend some much needed time with Zel. It was rare that the two was separated but some things couldn't be helped. "Did you miss me?" Kinley asked before she moved to lean against the table, directly next to him, fiddling with the bird necklace he had given her before they were even married. It was the most precious thing she owned.

He had meant to clean up. Oh he really did. There were some pockets of clean in the chaos, but always then would an idea struck him and it was either run with the idea or lose it. The choice he made was rather obvious...except when he was cleaning the bathroom. That he just ignored the silly idea about a portable information tablet. That one he knew would return with a vengance, and probably be much better than the original idea. Zel had also tried eating. It did help sometimes, it also distracted him. He couldn't even remember the last he had tea.

But it was this orb that facinated him so. Infurated was also an appropriate word. It just wouldn't work. Had he miscaluclated the ratio between elements again? Was there too much Shadow? Should Light be toned down? Would nothing but absolute balance contrive the perfect color? What if people wanted different colors? Was purple the color that was going to turn out all the time? Maybe he was thinking about this in all the wrong ways...

With his train of thought sufficently scattered deep in his creative and calculatory mind, it didn't even register that there was someone in his home. No one would really walk in unless Kinley was around, and even then just the thought of the Grand Alchemist living in the home kept most theives away. She kept the place all neat and tidy, not to mention smelling absolutely delicious with whatever it was was cooking, or boiling in the case of laundry every few weeks. Still, he really wasn't expecting anyone. Not after storming out of his castle work room the day after his beloved went on her trip when he had to explain to some assistant why fire could also be cold. There had been a disagreement as well between himself and other members of the King's council regarding the way of the kingdom. He might have maybe forbidden anyone from tresspassing under penalty of sometheing strange. So to say he didn't register even the door to his own workroom/the kitchen open was an understatement. No one would be daft enough to dare disturb him. With his mind was quite awash with thoughts, activities, and problems he had to solve on his own, he had eased up his personal bubble defense.

It was the soft scent that drifted over his table and bashed some sense into him that prevented the man from a potential bad husbandly response when arms wrapped around his shoulders. He still did tense and glance back at the face with surprise. Or was it furrowed his brow in concern? It was most likely a mix of the two as he felt his mouth twitch upwards into a smile, only to fall to a pout. Already two minutes and he was getting scolded for not eating! "But the ideas... the power of discovery compells me! " How the pout managed to stay as long as it did with her around was a feat of strength. The man was soon smirking, his eyes sparkling, and suddenly quite concious that this entire place was a mess. That didn't stop him from leaning his head back to just rest on the woman's shoulders to steal a kiss from her neck. "What ever gave you that idea, K'nly? I only destroyed half the home. You would have killed me if I did any of those explody experiments I normally do when you're home." He heard himself, distantly, laughing quietly as he kissed the wife's neck just one more time while the rest of his mind regained temporairy sanity.

The hand that hadn't been holding the abomnible purple orb rubbed at the stubble of his two week old beard, a stark and brooding frown clear as day. His eyes still sparkled when he looked at her, his idol, his living soul, hiding the corrosive and dangerous whispers that had been floating about the Castle halls and clung to walls like cobwebs on the oaths he had made to the Crown. "It's complicated now," he started, moving his attention to the glass bird around her neck to the glass orb in his hand held aloft. "Would any of this had really happened had it not been for some sort of sorcery, or am I truely going mad? With one man gone, another was summoned and bound... Don't you think that's odd? " Not two minutes home and he was speaking riddles! Ugh! How did she put up with him? He was a wreck, a chaotic wreck that made as much sense as a kilted ant. "I'd offer tea, but I can't recall where I put the kettle, or if I ever put the kettle on, or if we still have a kettle... It's been one of those week--things." He had stumbled over between saying week and things, and he couldn't even remembered if it had been a week, or a month, or a day, or a few hours since he last saw his wife properly. Therein lay the problem with his creative focus.

With another frown, and a huff, the orb of purple was set on its stand once more when he could find the time to devote to learning why it was purple. Until that time, he had more important matters to deal with. The man slid a leg from underneath his awkward seated position to sit on the edge of the table before he drew the woman closer with gentle encouragement from an arm around her waist. Mindful of the ticklishness of his newly grown set of whiskers, he kissed the tempol of her head and released a sigh, "Hello, Kinley. You came home early? Was something the matter? " he dared ask, but he would brave it.

In all honesty Kinley hadn't been surprised at Zel's reaction when she had snuck up behind him and in fact was expecting him to accidentally turn her into a frog or other reptile as he was often known to do. However, it had been a risk she had been willing to take since she had wanted to surprise him and it had been far to long since she had held him or been held by him. At his response Kinley could only grin. Of course his ideas had taken hold of him while she was gone and she would let him return to them later on in the day but right now she just wanted to be reunited with her husband. Especially after the whole fiasco at her Lady's home. "I know it does. You always come up with something amazing, even if that something isn't exactly what you had intended to make in the beginning." Kinley reminded him, though he usually did end up creating whatever he set out to create. Zel was an incredibly talented alchemist which only went to show that he had earned his title in the kingdom. When his lips gently touched her neck her whole body felt as if it was melting and being hit with electricity all at the same time. It was amazing what love made you experience. Until Zel came into her life Kinley had thought she would never find someone she could really connect with or be equal with and despite his titles when it was just them Kinley felt like Zel was really the only person who really understood her, strengths and weakness included. "I would have killed you if you had blown up our home while I was gone. Although it's an absolute mess I'd prefer returning home to this than no home at all." Kinley laughed at the idea.

When Zel began to tell her a little bit about what had been going on while she was away Kinley frowned a little. There were times she could understand Zel's riddles and times she couldn't. This was one of those times. "I'm not sure what you mean but I'll help you in finding the answer." She responded before he took her waist into his arms and kissed her for a third time. Her whole body seemed to buzz from his touch but his questions drew her out of her own thoughts. Kinley frowned a little before she gently moved her hands to either side of his face, gently caressing his cheeks in her palms. "I forgot I hadn't gotten to tell you because I had to leave immediately." She paused for a brief moment. "As you probably had guess Lady Elise was the root of the problem. She and her husband are having some troubles and while I was able to help a little it's very likely that they will be moving in with Lord Hegar's family. So more or less I'll be out of a job and they won't be close by anymore. No to mention their marriage isn't going too well as of late." She sighed and shook her brown hair. In her opinion these were petty concerns, at least when compared to with all the worries he had about the king's safety let alone the kingdoms but in her career and in some ways life, these were the most concerning issues she had. Unless Zel shared some of his which she was more than happy to help with, even if she was nothing more than something to throw idea's at. "More or less, I wasn't needed anymore. Though I'd be lying if I said I didn't rush here as fast as Ophelia would allow too." At this she smiled once more and gently kissed his nose before she rested her forehead against his, her green eyes looking into his before moving her arms so that she could wrap her arms around the back of his neck. It was nice to be able to hug him again. Her eyes closed and she took in a deep breath, taking in his lovely smells. "I already feel much better."

There were times he considered himself lucky. Right now was one of those times. A woman who understood him and was willing to scold him for possibly blowing up a house, while praising him at the same time for not even going there. Gods only know how lucky he was. There was peace in that thought. Pitty the fool that got between him and his woman.

His riddled words brought a smile at his Kinley's puzzlement. It was expected, at least. To explain why he spoke them would require a few hours to brief her on the political standing of the nation with the others, and that was never fun. He needed puppets to make it more interesting. Even with puppets, it wouldn't be as interesting as it could be, or should ever be. He settled for a soft chuckle, "I'll tell you in a minute. " His problems could wait. They weren't going anywhere, and it seemed like her life had just changed.

"Is he finally getting fed up with her?" he muttered. His brow creased in concern for his friend, Lord Ellis, Zel had to take a moment to compute all that had been said and unsaid. Marriage on the island wasn't anything to be scoffed at. In fact, it was sacred and a life sentence ( as some would lovingly call it) to protect and love. Sometimes, though, two beings just didn't get along after all the years of infatuation faded. It was a fickle problem, and it was hard enough to comprihend when someone wasn't being an expert at derailing detailed thoughts with their touch. "We can make time to visit them, you know. I don't have any pressing matters to attend to immediatly that others cannot handle themselves. It is a shame that they had to leave."

The warmth of her forehead against his brought a goofy grin to his face. With a kiss of her nose, Zel laughed, leaning back on his elbows on the table. "Good, " he began, then heasitated as he glanced once more at the yellow orb. That experiment could wait. It was only a distraction, anyways. And with his other half here, perhaps a solution could be had. Or an opinion. Maybe even a ' You're being silly.' "I'm just glad you got back safely. Rogues have been hitting harder on the caravans. The war effort has drained the treasury almost dry. And the ... Well, the sharks Below are getting restless. It might be best to go away from the city for a long while. " he suggested, watching her for her reaction before he dared continued. It was always the information that one didn't know that scared an intelligent man. Unknown variables. Right now, it wasn't Kinley that worried him, it was what could possibly happen now that she was back in arms length. Who knows what could happen if he took his eyes off her for a second in this city in its current state! Bandits, that's who.

And if bandits...It'd be an encore of their honeymoon. Scolding included. The alchemist simply sighed. Tea sounded splendid. He would go and make some tea. He should get up and make some tea. He shouldn't sit there, staring at his beautiful wife and dwelling on dangerous thoughts. Trecherous thoughts. Possibly treasonous thoughts under the Laws of the Island...and yet, it was these thoughts that reminded him that he was a member of the Arcanium and above most laws. Sometimes, like now, he wished he was a true neutral. "Tea? he ventured to ask before he would eventually peel himself off the table to go find the kitchen a stones throw away and make a clean pot of tea.
