Back in a majorly cleaner place, Melvin let Rin into her room, let her settle wherever she wanted to sit (not that there were many places aside from his desk, bed, or clean floor) and went over to open a box that held his whiskey. Pulling out a bottle, he twisted the cap and fished out two shot classes so clean that it was surprising Melvin hadn't polished it down to thin air.
Moving over, he handed her a glass. "I don't have any ice."

Rin decided to take up residence on the foot of his bed, "That's okay." Rin took her glass and eyed it thoughtfully, "What is it about whiskey that draws you to it so much?"

He dragged his desk chair over and sat down, pouring himself some whiskey before passing it over to her to fill her own cup. "It's always been the drink I think of when I think of great men. My dad drinks whiskey." He raised his glad in a gesture to toast to him and took a hearty sip.

Rin poured herself a glass before passing the bottle back. She held her full glass up when he had and took a daintier sip of the contents, "What was he like? Your dad, I mean."

"What IS my dad like? He's still alive." Melvin pointed out, clearly upset that she made it a past tense. It passed in a flicker before he relaxed again.
"A good man. Helped raised us like any other dad. Treats my mother well. Gets along with the neighbors and likes fishing and working on his car." Melvin was short with the list, not wanting to say his father was average, but not wanting to talk too much about him.
"What is your dad like?"

"You mean what WAS my dad like as I am not a part of his life anymore and thus don't know what he is like in the present tense anymore?" Rin tossed back the rest of her glass with an irritable snort. "He was great; raised me by himself, always made sure I didn't starve, filled my life with great aspirations, and it's because of him that I enjoy plants as much as I do now."

Melvin didn't want to admit that his own father wasn't in his life anymore, but refused to use a past tense on any of his family members. "Was he a gardener by hobby or was that his job?" He asked, taking another sip of his drink.

"A hobby, I suppose. The garden was the only really nice thing we had," Rin sighed and offered her empty glass at him hoping he'd refill it for her.

Melvin leaned over and carefully refilled her glass before reclining back into his own chair and drinking. "My mother had a garden, but it was more to keep the house looking good and the neighbors from glaring at our yard. I think she liked driving places more than anything." Sometimes his mother would just tell their dad she wanted a day and would just drive for a while before returning. It was time for just herself, and never once did his father worry that she wouldn't return home. It was probably why he kept the car in such great condition.
"What did you grow in your garden?" He asked, continuing to drink more deeply as a turning, churning homesickness gripped the pit of his stomach.
