"Sit."

The grumpkin king stared her down. Piper stared back, bent over, hands on her hips.

"I said sit, Hati."

He stubbornly continued to eye her, unimpressed. Clicking her tongue, she growled at it and snickered as the minipet stepped back with some alarm. She was gonna show it who's boss!

Originally Piper had taken Hati out to get him acclimated to his new surroundings, knowing he was the least receptive to change among her batch of pets. Apparently not even the grounds were enough to make the grumpkin king relax. Fur bristling at the challenge, he gave a soft hiss and lashed his tail.

"Oh, don't start. Look, do you want to go for a walk or not? You're not going to like it here unless you give it a cha--Hey!" Hati took off on a split second impulse, and thus began Piper's morning of exercise.

Brenley had never had any pets other than Twiz, the lazy family puggle, but he did possess mountains upon mountains of books. And a computer. Two of them. This overabundance of stuff had been one of the reasons why it had taken him and his father four consecutive days to transfer everything he had deemed necessary for serious study from home to his new dorm room. The task had finally been completed a little over ten minutes ago when dad had driven away in his old puce doom buggy with the promise that he and mom would visit soon. The last of the boil's possessions to make the trip were slung in a pack across his back and consisted of a pair of precise digital scales and three books: Breaking the FEAR Barrier, Synthesizing Minipets at Home, and Tales of a Lonely Death Priestess. Bren was now looking forward to a quiet afternoon, one last stretch of alone time before he had to make an effort to be social.

Ten more steps until he was inside. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. What in the hell was that?

He backed up again, erasing all of the progress he had made toward comfort and then some as he watched a skinny blue-haired ghoul chase a minipet across campus. Eventually he moved away from the dorm and started after her, waving one arm above his head in an attempt to grab her attention.

"Hello! Do you need some help with... that?" He had no idea what any of the number of fluffy minipets he'd seen around here were called, but he had a feeling he'd be learning their names soon enough.

The responding call fluctuated in volume as she neared and then circled about. "Yeeeeeesssssss pleeeaassssse!" Piper's arms flailed about, half for balance and half for emphasis for how terribly tragic this was. Stupid pets.

The ghoul pouted and broke a sweat as the minipet saw fit to make her do a couple of laps in a circle before, panting as well, he bolted to the reaper dorm doors. Sure there was something in the way, but Brenley was circumvented with a few nimble hops. Piper shook a fist the grumpkin king's way before coming to a stuttering stop before the other reaper, trying to catch her breath; her hair continued to bounce for a few seconds after the fact. "Ughhhhhh." The mage groaned as she wiped at her forehead. "Great first week with a dumb minipet . . . Yeah, uh, you mind helping me with him?" she asked. "Hati's not normally so bad, but I think he's slightly freaked we moved." "Slightly".

His legs remained stubbornly motionless until he told them to take a friendly step forward for no less than the third time. There might have been sighing as well, but thankfully it was faint and the ghoul was still far enough away that she probably hadn't heard. It seemed he was going to have to commence with the friendliness sooner than he had expected. Some reflex he hadn't known he possessed activated as Hati bounced past, but Brenley's arm was far too slow to even come close to catching the animal.

"No. I don't mind at all," he replied with a well-practiced Wry Smile #4. "I left my puggle back home, but he's so lazy I doubt he'd ever take off like that. I'm sure we can get Hati back though." He stepped aside, allowing the ghoul to lead the retrieval effort. "I'm new to Amityville as well. Brenley Quinn."

If Piper understood sarcasm, she didn't show it. She was busy glaring at the bouncing grumpkin king enjoying his victory lap near the steps to the reaper dorms. She was about to drag him along for a pincer maneuver when she heard his name.

"Come again?" She whipped her head to give him an astonished look, following by a brilliant smile. "Brenley Quinn, that what you said? Oh my Jack, heyyyyy!" She and her hair bounced in place gleefully. Tired? 'Scuse you, not right now! "Oh my Jack, hi! I'm Piper Blacke, the one with the letters," the mage introduced herself with a hand outstretched. "Fancy meeting you here! Well this is just, like, embarassing, I'm not even ready to meet people and my hair's a mess, and now stupid Hati . . ."

Piper touched her hair and frowned; definitely more puffy than she liked due to being annoyed. "So, um, if you help me, we could, like, talk? Go get something to eat? I'm not really familiar with this part of Halloween to be honest . . ."

Well, this was unexpected. Yes, he knew the name Piper Blacke all too well, as it seemed she knew his. It wasn't as though he had poured his heart out all over those letters or anything embarrassing like that, but when you only ever regularly speak to two people and a dog, you tend to lose a certain level of self-filtering. He couldn't recall doing much more than rambling about his books and experiments, although he most certainly had written quite a bit about his desire to come here. He hoped he hadn't come across as too much of a weirdo.

Wry Smile #4 faded into something far more uncertain. At least this fleeting grin reached Bren's eyes. "Yes, something to eat. That would be fun." He took her hand and shook, but it was a rather weak attempt. "It is a pleasure to meet you and you look fine." Although he had practiced his smiles and his straight-backed, confident stance, he clearly could have used some additional lessons in greetings. "We can look around for somewhere suitable after... the Hati situation is resolved." He didn't move save for his eyes, which flicked in the grumpkin king's direction and narrowed slightly. "How should we go about this?" Serious business.

Considering how very . . . enclosed her last school had been, Piper had embraced his oddities with unabashed happiness, which she did here as well--odd smile or not. She made up for his weak handshake with a firm grip and a firmer handshake. "Aww, you think? I could do better," she dismissed with a small wave of her hand and a grin. "Let's see . . . Hati's somewhat fast, but he isn't lightning. And like any minipet, he can get bribed by food. I've got some of his treats left up in my room, but I'm afraid if I leave and get it . . ."

Oh. Wait. Duh. Piper rolled her eyes and smacked her forehead. "Wow I'm dumb." Rubbing her hands together, she clapped once and made as if to blow out a candle between them, and a few fiery cardinals were created with a tweet. "Alright, my lovelies, you're going to help us catch Hati. Yes again, don't give me that look."

The trio of birds passed the boil a curious look as Piper gave him a thumbs up. "Here's what we can do. We're going to hide behind the Reaper dorms," she told him with a gesture, "while my lovelies force him towards us. With three of them on fire, he'll have no choice but to run straight towards us!" And that seemed solid enough to her. "You're quick on your feet, right?"

Considering that she hadn't given him the stink eye or walked away outright, he must not have come across too poorly in his letters. Good. Bren tried to keep the surprise from his face as she summoned her trio of fiery little birds, and he succeeded, mostly. He was a sorcerer, and although he was well-versed in enchanting stinging pebbles and creating magical mousetraps, he had certainly never produced small animals out of thin air.

"Yes... I mean... that sounds like an excellent plan." He hesitated, watching the birds instead of the ghoul. How to put this? "I wouldn't say that I'm quick... exactly?" He nodded. "I'll go as fast as I can." While he was dressed a great deal more plainly today than usual, he still wasn't much for physical exertion. He was committed now, however. He would subdue this minipet... or else. The boil swallowed and quickly removed the bangles from his hair, shoving them in the pocket of his jeans.

"Eh, close enough." She pat his shoulder a few times. "He'll tire faster than us anyway, so we've got the advantage. Alright then!" Gesturing for him to follow, Piper skittered behind a wall of the reaper forms, pushing her poofy hair back so she could peek around it (its size and volume was legendary, sure, but it made sneaking...difficult). "On the count of three, just run at him!"

Expert plan maker, this one.

She held up a few fingers at the ready behind her for Brenley to watch. On an unseen command the cardinals began to swoop down on the grumpking with chipper chirps, Hati's responding cries clearly audible from their hiding spot. They weren't going to burn him of course (or, well, they weren't supposed to), but hopefully the fire would set him in a big enough panic to forget being such a smart a**.

"Hope you're ready!" she whispered to the sorcerer optimistically, counting down her fingers wordlessly. Three. Two. One.

With a jab to the air, Piper bellowed a mighty and girlish battle cry as she rushed forward.

Bren remained silent as he ran out from behind the dorm, heading out of cover in a slightly wider arc than Piper had traveled. Once he was within diving distance of the grumpkin king, he finally yelled a war cry of his own. Even though it was one of the most thoroughly unimpressive shouts on record, the boil was at least in a good position to help scare the creature back in Piper's direction, with the assistance of her birds.
