A real spring was finally here, and he'd managed to get sick. He'd searched the family's drug cabinet for a decongestant, and he'd tried taking some allergy remedies, but nothing seemed to be working. This felt far more like a cold than any pollen allergy; nose and chest were congested, he felt warm, and his ears felt all kinds of plugged up. He figured that a jaunt down the street would do him some good; his mothers' books told him that sick people went to sanitariums to recover, where they sat in the sunshine and relaxed. He didn't feel that sick, so perhaps just a walk around the block would be the ticket.

Sneezing and sniffling, he did his best to stay composed on the street as he made his way down to the drug store to see if they had anything that would help.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Achoo! At the sound of a sneeze, Tiger Balm’s head whipped around. Her body quickly followed, hovering off the ground as her wings fluttered excitedly. She had been idling in a storefront, admiring the large collection of ceramic tea pots and wondering how long it would take her to earn enough to buy one, but that was all forgotten, her focus now settling firmly on the person who had sneezed. There he was, walking along towards her. The poor dear looked so pale. Well, she would help him, no problem.

"Excuse me, may I have a word?" She asked as she stepped out onto his path. She was slight thing, but with the way she planted herself firmly ahead of the other Phony made her words less of a question and more of a demand.

Normally, Pale Moonlight would have politely acknowledged the stranger, but today the colt had an errand to run. Even though the flutter had firmly planted herself quite squarely in front of him, he had to get past her. Attempting to edge his way through and mutter an apology, a sneeze caught him.

"Ah- certainly, but-" he stuttered as he attempted to stifle the sneeze before it came out. "Terribly sorry, miss, but- I- ah- must sneeze!" Achoo! came the muffled noise as the colt, not wanting to sneeze on his dainty new acquaintance, buried his face in his shoulder. "Blasted chillblains!"

Tiger Balm’s expression was a strange mixture of concern and delight. "You are sick." Well, obviously. She gave a firm nod. The poor fellow clearly needed specialist care. He needed her expertise. "I can help you.” She declared. "I will need to gather some supplies first. In the meantime, you need to go home and rest. It’s not good for you to be out and about." The Flutter looked as if she wanted to sling him over her shoulders and carry him home herself.

A doctor? A specialist doctor? She looked young, but perhaps she was a prodigy. Goodness knew that was a possibility. "Yes! Yes, I am sick!" he exclaimed. "Um. Would- ah!- would it be easier if I followed you? I mean, I don't want you to have to go all the way home, then all the way back to my house. And if you have the remedy and can help, I certainly would appreciate it!" Pale Moonlight's face scrunched up, then he buried his face in his shoulder again to muffle yet another sneeze. His body shook and his normally well-kept curls flew everywhere as he tried to stop that cursed sneezing! Achoo!

"You are the patient. If I had to travel to the moon and back to treat you, I would do so happily." Tiger Balm told him with a fierce little hoof stomp to show how serious she was about her work. But he was correct and she could treat his sickness better if she had everything close at hand. "Follow me." When he sneezed again, she gave a sympathetic tutting sound. Better get him home soon. She turned to walk and then stopped, peering back at him. "My remedy takes time. You will have to rest and sleep for it to work properly. Is that okay?" She didn't have parents to worry about her, but she knew others did.

"So take a nap afterwards? Absolutely, doctor!" Pale Moonlight said, nodding his head eagerly. The young lady was quite astute; clearly, her knowledge of medicine would help. "My moms won't mind." It wasn't as if Phonyland was full of crime. Just full of tourists. And phonies.

And germs. Achoo! He followed the flutter, keeping pace with her while at the same time trying to not infect her. Whatever she did would be such a relief! And if it didn't work, by some chance, he'd just swing by the drug store after he left. Not a big deal!

As she led the way to her house, Tiger Balm tried to make sure she looked both caring and professional. That grin that wanted to creep onto her face every time he sneezed wouldn't be any good in putting her patient at ease. Yes, carrying and professional. Soft smiles and… ooh, she was so pleased.

Her little home was tucked away down an alley; an almost-shop with bunches of dried herbs hanging in the window. It wasn't a real business yet. She was probably too young for that and there was so much more for her to learn. But Tiger Balm already had a few regular visitors that came to her for advice.

"Come in." She ushered her patient into a cluttered front room, filled with endless glass jars, none of which were labelled. "Sit on the cushion. Make yourself comfortable. Ah, here’s a blanket for you." She dragged a blanket over to a frayed red cushion on the ground and then began to flutter around the room, muttering to herself as she selected a herb over here and a sachet of powder of there.

Tonics, tisanes, poultices, and potions lined the flutter's... office? Home? Apothecary?

Yes. Apothecary. That was the word for it. Pale Moonlight looked around, noting the variety of herbs and powders she kept. Nothing seemed to be identified; she must have an intimate knowledge and memorization of the place. Curling up on the cushion, he watched her at work. Such a diligent doctor she was, and so kind to take him in as just a random patient!

"Um," he said, snuggling into the blanket. "I suppose- if it doesn't interrupt you- I should ask for your name?" It wouldn't do at all to just think of her as "the flutter."

"Tiger Balm." Her muffled voice answered as she struggled out of view with a jar top. The problem with being a Flutter was having such weak little limbs. Sooner or later she was going to have to work out a better system than this.

Finally she had everything she needed and after laboriously mixing, grinding and prepping her ingredients, she returned to her patient with a small cup of brownish green water. It did not look in any way appetising and even its scent was sharp and unappealing. But Tiger liked to joke that such a terrible taste would scare the cold write out.

"Drink this." She ordered as she placed it carefully down before him. Then she sat back, watching eagerly.

"And I am Pale Moonlight," he said. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance!" The little unicorn accepted the draught, sniffing at it nervously. It smelled... bizarre, and not at all pleasant, but if Tiger Balm was so kind as to make it for him, he owed it to her to put on a brave face and swallow it down. He wanted to splutter and spit, but choked down the muddy-looking beverage. "How long does it take to start working?" And was it his imagination, or could he already feel the congestion in his ears beginning to clear?

"It should give some relief immediately. Your nose will clear up a bit. Now you should curl up and try to sleep while I make you soup." Tiger Balm explained. "I’ll get something to help with the taste, hang on." With a wink, she disappeared through a doorway in the back and reappeared carrying a spoon full of honey. Holding the end up the spoon in her mouth and her eyes crossed with concentration, she walked it over Pale Moonlight and offered it for him to take.

The colt accepted the honey graciously, extending a tendril of magic to take it from her. Things were really so much easier when you could levitate small items! He swallowed the honey, savoring the viscous sweetness. "Soup? You're far too kind, Doctor Tiger Balm!" he sighed, curling himself tighter on the cushion. Within minutes he was asleep- and definitely starting to feel better.

After tucking the blanket around her patient to make sure he stayed warm, Tiger Balm started on gathering her next batch of ingredients; dried mushrooms, ginger, and ginseng to start with, and then a touch of cinnamon and a selection of powdered herbs. Later she would add a few other elements to give it a pleasant taste.

She set the soup to boil on her little stove, ready for Pale Moonlight whenever he woke.

It wasn't too terribly long before Pale Moonlight awakened, feeling much better. The congestion in his nose and forehead had cleared, and his ears weren't throbbing with pain. His nose still tickled just a bit, but he didn't feel that ever-present need to sneeze. He yawned, stretched, and smelled the delicious aroma of Tiger Balm's soup. "Gracious! That smells rather amazing!"
