A week had passed since she began life anew as Qiuyue and not once did she find herself regretting taking up Remarque's offer in that side alley to listen to what the Dark Mirror Court could offer her. Two minutes of her time? It had taken way longer than that. That was for sure but it certainly felt wonderful to be able to greet the entire world with confidence and no longer need to hide her face from the authorities, who were still looking for Ruan Ruan though it seemed from the latest update on the news that they were planning to call off their search efforts in a fortnight.
It was a bright and sunny start to the weekend - perfect weather to be out and about really, hence her decision to head to the park to do some people watching as well as familiarize herself with the city landscape en route. The park, as she subsequently found, didn't seem to differ too much from the few ones she had been to back in Taiwan. Well, other than the obvious things like the flora and the ethnicity of the people of course, but people still did more or less the same things like picnicking, admiring the flowers in bloom or simply indulging in some family time with their loved ones.
And what might those people be doing? She paused to muse to herself for a bit before pressing on with the intent of checking it out. Were they playing chess or something else entirely? Only one way to find out...

Xander sat among the other checkers players, engaged in a game that was nearing its end. Xander just had to capture two more pieces from the other man's side and with his two kings and four remaining pieces it seemed inevitable. He smiled and shook his head when the frustrated man made a rookie mistake, though Xander suspected he wanted to put himself out of his misery.
It was sad, he never much liked forfeit moves, even though he was all for a forfeit in his new acquired knight life. He quickly jumped the last two remaining pieces before shaking the man's hand and thanking him for a good game. The man left and Xander turned looking around the park. His eyes landed briefly on Qiuyue, but held no recognition for the girl and his gaze continued on.
He gave a small yawn and settled back into his chair with a small smile on his face waiting for his next opponent. The afternoon had been fairly decent thus far, he wasn't on call to the hospital and he didn't intend on patrolling tonight, though that could possibly change.baby_gwing Sorry for the ridiculously long wait ... my muse was being stupid

There was one particular redhead who stood out among the other checker players present to Qiuyue, though it was not really because of Xander's hair colour or his dashing good looks but more from his relatively tender age compared to the rest of them. It appeared that he was just about done with a round of whatever he was playing with the other male seated opposite him, both men shaking each other's hand before the other got up to leave.
Curiosity piqued, Qiuyue couldn't help but inch closer so that she could look over the game pieces and deduce for herself as to what they were playing. "Is this... checkers?" The pieces were vaguely familiar to her, a sheepish smile crossing her face when the memory they were linked with clicked into place in her mind. Her pen pal had once mentioned in one of his previous correspondences of how fond he was of the game.

Xander hardly realized he was a young man in a sea of old man, no to him, he was just another guy looking for a good checkers game. It was fun and relaxing, as well as something he was good at. He didn't actually get to play very often, not in the park anyway. No the part was becoming synonymous for something else entirely.
Xander noticed Qiuyue getting closer, but said nothing allowing her time to come up and maybe ask for a game. He of course amused this is what she was seeking being here at checkers time, so he was a little surprised at her question. He blinked at her at first, but smiled after a moment.
"Yes, it is. Have you never played before," he asked motioning for her to take a seat it she liked. She seemed curious and Xander didn't mind talking about checkers. He would even teach her to play if she wanted that. Another checkers player was definitely something this world needed.

"No." Qiuyue shook her head, a slightly embarrassed look crossing her features as she took the seat opposite Xander when indicated to do so. She then paused for a bit, trying to recall the background of the falsified identity she had come up with for herself before offering the older redhead an explanation for her present clueless state.
"I'm not from around these parts you see, though a friend from the university that I'm enrolling at did share with me that people have a habit of gathering here to play checkers on weekends so I had to come and see for myself..." It was probably a lot more detailed than one would normally expect but she was trying to ensure that she had all her bases covered so that there was a smaller chance of anyone noticing any inconsistency in her forged identity.

Xander gave a small smile, "its a pretty simply game, but can involve a lot of fun strategy to win. I could teach you how to play if you are interested in learning?"
He went about resetting the piece, but after a moment gave her a curious glance, "I do wonder though how it is that you've never come to play checkers. I was a favorite with my sisters and I when we were children. We would even use the pieced from a game called Connect 4 to play if we lost piece and vice versa. Thinking on it now, that probably how we lost pieces."
He gave a nervous laugh, he had totally just rambled. Surely the girl didn't need to know all that, but he tended to go off on tangents sometimes especially when he was at a lost of words. That or he'd just not talk at all which was of course worse.baby_gwing I'm sorry, I'm slow as molasses!

"If that's fine with you... I mean, I don't want to hold you up if there's somewhere or something else you're supposed to be doing." Qiuyue smiled in return, her gaze settling on the board and the reset pieces before she redirected it his way again. "I guess it's probably because we do not have checkers back in Taiwan where I come from." That was something that she knew for a fact. Back in her early days as an idol, she had a pen pal who told her about the game and being curious as to how it was like, she had tried to look for it but didn't manage to find it in any of the shops there no matter how hard she tried.
She started to look a little envious when he spoke of his sisters. "Ah... are your sisters here with you today? How many siblings do you have?" The rambling didn't bother her really. Being an only child and an orphan since a tender age, she never really knew what it was like to have a family let alone siblings so she couldn't help but want to know more about him and his family.
