Melvin was waiting on a piece of equipment to be done being used by a lab a few rooms over and was taking the opportunity to get some coffee. Due to using up not only his leave and his money on that unfortunate jail trip, he was rationing out his own coffee and was now bothering, in-between good coffee, by using what the labs had. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't cafeteria coffee either. At least a few of the offices had runiced coffeepots to make fresh pots, and since he was the later lab shifts, he could use the morning labs side office and make a pot for himself. Sure, it wasn't the best coffee but it was fresh.
Waiting for it to finishing brewing, Melvin cleaned a mug he kept way in the back and dried it as he listened to the machine gurgle and hiss.

Sasha was not a coffee drinker. She much preferred the more delicate flavors of tea - and not the foul black, mangled tea that they provided at Deus, but her own blends that she kept organized in the room she shared with Wash.
There was something about the smell of brewing coffee that offended Sasha's senses, and for that reason alone she caught herself following the rancid scent trail.
Melvin. Sasha frowned.
"That stinks."

Melvin finished drying his cup when he heard Sasha and turned to her when she commented on the aroma of bad coffee. "It's not good coffee, but I'm not asking for it to smell good though." He wasn't about to deny that bad coffee was something you wanted to create into a perfume to swim in, but right now it smelled okay enough to drink. It was one of those times when you knew something wasn't good for your body, but you wanted it anyways and you'd punch someone who got in your way of having said thing.
Taking the pot, he poured the coffee into the cup and then, placing it back, opened the side fridge where a box of creamers were kept. Of course, he didn't give Sasha his full back and kept her in his line of sight. He wasn't stupid enough to just ignore her completely.
"Did you just come to smell the air?" He asked, shutting the door as he tore off the paper to a creamer top and poured it into his cup.

"I followed my nose," Sasha gave a small, polite smile, "because truthfully I was hoping it was a stupid trainee leaving the pot on to burn like they've been known to do."
She'd had to clean up on several occasions before she'd confronted the fool that had left the pot hot and full of coffee. It hadn't happened since then, but Sasha really didn't hold out much hope regarding the intelligence of others.
"What are you working on?" She was curious, in truth, about the little projects that kept other hunters busy.

Melvin shook a few packets of sugar as he tore off the package top and poured it in. "Artifact testing." A department that consisted of only him. He preferred it, and liked just having his own lab space for a set time.
Stirring his cup, he turned fully to her as he threw away his trash, his entire section of making coffee leaving not a speck of cream or light dusting of sugar. "What have you been up to? Do they trust you with pointy things in your department?"

Melvin's comment about pointy things wrought a laugh from Sasha, genuine in her amusement.
"Research on my own project, miniature golems. And of course they let me have pointy things, Melvin. Are you still worried that I might carry a knife with me everywhere I go?"
She shook her head, watching him curiously. He was methodical in his actions. It was something that she could appreciate.
"Tell me more about your artifact testing? I'll walk you back to your workspace once you've finished with coffee."

"I think you could probably made plenty of household items a worthwhile weapon if you put that weird head of yours into it. I doubt you'd be restricted to just knives." Considering anyone crazy to bring a knife on someone in the first place and enjoy it wasn't stable, he felt that anything sharp would do the trick.
"And I think people that escort others to place are there to keep them safe from the crazies." He pointed out, not really enthused to taking Sasha to his workplace in case she wanted to corner him in a private place - not that she had any reason yet. She already said she was only off her rocker for Rep. Lucky him.
"Miniature golems. Are you testing those yet? I haven't seen any variation of golem expect the ones we use in the field. How about you take me to your workplace?" She had other workers there, right?

"Not yet. I've run in to some trouble here and there. I'm keen on working out the kinks before unleashing them on hapless test subjects."
Sasha gave him a very large grin, the corners of her eyes wrinkling.
"I have no interest in causing you harm, Melvin. We all have our different quirks and eccentricities." She shrugged. "Believe what you like, though, as long as it keeps you... comfortable."
Sasha eyed the pale coffee he held in his hand before lifting her gaze back to his after a moment.
"There's nobody at my workspace. I don't work with any others."
She smiled again.

"Quirks? You have a cute way of describing the bonkers going up in your head." He said, taking a sip of his own coffee and staying put. "Nothing about your quirks makes me all that comfortable, either. As much as your playing with Rep, I have to wonder how long you want to play with others at some point or another. Not too thrilled you want to have fun with Rep to be honest." He took another sip of his coffee before he continued.
"I suppose no one jumped at the chance to be part of your department. I can't think of a single reason why." He said with the most chipper sarcasm. He wasn't going to say he worked alone in case she decided to pop in to insult whatever else he might be drinking that day.

"You're just darling," Sasha chuckled quietly, the sound rough from disuse.
"Why do you have an issue with what I choose to do with Rep? He's a grown man, isn't he? Capable of making his own decisions and whatnot." She was silent for a moment.
"Nobody jumped at the chance because the chance was never given. I don't like working with others, and I don't want anyone else to have the opportunity to take credit for my hard work."
Sasha crossed her arms over her chest, lips pursed.
"I couldn't expect you to understand," she trailed off, letting him assume what he wanted about that last comment.

He placed a hand to his thin chest, mocking hurt. "Rep is a dear friend of mine and while he's more than capable in smashing a few skulls in, and he has his own quirks of his own, it's only natural for normal people to want to ensure the safety of those they associate with." And value for a sense of protection and constant social need. " And being grown means very little in a place like this." There were plenty of adults who were screwing their own lives, and Rep had a temper and been on probation. His record for violence against someone with none didn't help him. "There are plenty of decisions grown men do that I don't approve of." Like having a crazy murder game with a psycho.
"I don't understand? I suppose if you don't work with others because you're paranoid that someone can play the part of a smart scientist better than you can to receive credit and make you look like a dumb minion, then yes. I don't understand. I just happen to like independence - though having a few workers under me would be nice." That way he could send them to get his own coffee.
"And I'm not darling." He added, sipping his coffee again.

"Oh, but you are. Considering yourself one of the normal people, Melvin. It really is endearing."
Sasha grinned even wider.
"I never said anything about being paranoid. Nor did I say anything about not being independent. I'm not worried about being made to look stupid. The people who matter here - no, the one person who matters here - knows that my intelligence is not something to fret over. He knows that I am completely capable of looking after my own endeavors and accomplishments."
The dark-haired woman shrugged.
"Take that as you will."

"While I'm just thrilled that you think that of me, I don't think you can be any judge of what normal is or isn't. When I need an opinion about which type of bean goes with a human liver, then I'll seek your opinion."
He resumed drinking his coffee as she spoke. While the jokes were fun in their own way, what he most enjoyed was that Sasha was a talker. While still not saying too much, she still said enough, and Melvin was a sucker for conversation.
"This one person, is he real? He's not standing in the same room with us and I can't spot him, right?" He said with a smile and pretended to look around as if he could spot this imaginary friend before looking back at her. "If this person knows of your intelligence, do they know you try to stab people? That you enjoy weird games with Rep?"

Sasha started laughing the instant that Melvin stopped talking. It was a deep belly laugh, one that she was helpless to stop until she ran out of breath and tears pooled at the corners of her eyes.
"I am certain that the Doctor knows almost everything that happens on this island. Sometimes he even encourages certain activities that might not seem... morally golden."
Sasha dabbed at the tears in her eyes with the corner of her scarf, the smile on her lips lingering.
"I haven't laughed like that in a long time. Thank you for that, Melvin."

He was startled by the, what he would call, manic laughter of the other and watched her with the sort of uneasiness that came with not knowing if someone was about to say something super creepy or do something super creepy after said laugh.
When she continued normally, he resumed drinking his coffee just to introduce some warmth back into his body and then paused.
Doctor?
There were many doctors in the Infirmary, but she was stating it as a name. He only knew one person that insisted to be called Doctor.
Dumbledore.
Melvin just looked at Sasha, a bit surprised. "Dr. H?" Considering Dr. H's conduct in the mysterious writer's investigation, he could see the man doing similar things before. Being cryptic but otherwise making odd threats and allusions to violence or some unsavory act. Yup. It sounded like him.
"I'm happy that my happy ways could entertain you." He said in the same dry tone as he said before and turned just slightly so he could fill his cup again. That laugh left him feeling a bit shaken.
