Today was beginning to look like such a wonderfully dreadful day. The skies were dark, and the lands took on an almost grayish cast. Where most lions were sluggish Issa was positively radiant. Glowing, one might say...with fright. His nerves were zinging so fast that it was hard for him to contemplate putting one paw in front of the other, let alone accomplishing his mission.
In his jaws a particularly muscular hare; a creature that he never would have been able to catch were it not for Idris. Idris. Oh, he would have swooned, had he not been so close to finding her. She was close, he just knew it; or rather, so did the other hunters.
Today would either be the first day in the rest of his life, or the last.

Looking up at the dreary sky, Idris inhaled deeply, and then snorted. She couldn't decide if she should go for a hunt, or go hide in some cool cavern for a nap. Frankly, she'd been like this for a while now. She wasn't quite sure what to do with herself anymore. That boy, Issa... He'd been growing on her. Far more than she had intended when she'd agreed to become his trainer. She couldn't be... but she was.
Snorting loudly at herself, she pushed up and walked away from the pride. "Idris. You're getting soft, ol' girl." she grumbled through a tiny smirk. She couldn't help it, of course. Issa was... What was Issa? He was... something. Lavender eyes looked up to the sky again. This wasn't something to think about on such an overcast day...
At any rate; where was that boy? Maybe he would be up to some hunting? He always had enough energy for going to the horizon and back.

Where his steps had been unsure and hurried in his search, as soon as he laid his gaze upon the bronzed goddess Issa's paws were as light as air. His mother had once called him "twitterpated", and he couldn't deny it. Maybe by the end of the day he would be able to show his mother the lioness who had him wrapped around her little claw.
"I'niie!" Issa tried to shift the hare around in his jaw while he walked, and nearly dropped it. Slurred speech it was. "I'niee, do'ta'nair nor noo."

Idris' ears twitched as a strange voice called out a strange name. Who was that? A new set of recruits? She second time the name was called, her head snapped around. No, she knew that voice. "Issa! Drop that thing and speak to me like a normal lion rather than a cub with his food in his mouth!" she scolded sharply, hiding her smile behind her sternness. That was... kinda cute how eager he was. Still, he was making himself sound absolutely silly.

Issa pulled up short and laid the hare out before her like the very cub he felt like. He tried his hardest to contain his jumbled emotions, but could do nothing about the grin on his maw. "I caught a hare...for you." The young lion stood straighter, and took a deep breath. "I thought maybe you...you hadn't eaten yet today."
Good plan! Show her how you can provide for her.

Looking at the offered hair, her gaze slowly rose back up to that proud maw of her student. He'd caught it... for her? ...He'd caught her dinner? A hare? By himself? After staring at Issa a moment, Idris allowed a tiny smile to lift. "..Thank you, Issa. It's a fine catch." She was quite struck by this. ..Perhaps a little more than was right, but, she couldn't help it. When had someone last given her such a conscious consideration? "Have you eaten yet?"

It couldn't have been more perfect than this. He could tell he'd done right just by the look on her face! "Nothing but the best for you, Idris." He chuckled nervously. The tan hunter sat before her, and started to clean himself up. After all, he needed to look his best!
"Huh?" Issa paused long enough to nod his head. "I nabbed a bite when I was out hunting for the hare." Liar. His growling stomach couldn't have been more on cue than if the Gods themselves had planned it.

She blinked slowly, feeling a little heat at her cheeks. The best... for her? What was this funny feeling? ..It was amusing, how proud of himself Issa looked. Though, truly.. it did take discipline to catch a strong hare such as the one now at her paws.
Her ears perked as the loud, hungry growl betrayed Issa's denial. Idris sighed and shook her head, another smile making her maw twitch. "Come on, then. Share this with me. Perhaps we can hunt together for more later?"

Deep breaths, Issa, deep breaths. At some point his Uncle had been in this position, and so had his father, he was sure of it. The worst she could do would be to rip his heart in two, and shun him. No pressure.
"No thanks, I...Well, maybe later...Hey, Idris?" Issa's ears flipped back into his mane. "I...I like you. Like, a lot."

Her eyes narrowed slightly. That had been one loud growl... How long had it taken Issa to catch the hare? Idris looked at her coming meal curiously. Now he was going to deprive himself? A lion couldn't afford to waste the chance for a meal! Even a small one.
Her brow knit as Issa continued talking. Liked her? A lot? "Oh? Well, I suppose I like you well enough..." Did he mean... A lot, or... a lot a lot? Wait... What was she saying? Was she.. No, she couldn't be! But.. she found herself hoping... "Would you care to elaborate on what you mean by.. a lot?"

I don't really want to, no. Now that the ball was entirely in his court Issa wasn't comfortable at all in discussing the topic. He shuffled his paws in the dirt, and huffed, giving her a little nervous look from the corner of his eye.
"Well...a lot." He licked his lips and straightened a bit. "I...I loveyouIdris. You're the single best huntress in this pride, and watching you hunt is just....it's like watching a Goddess fly! You're smart, so, so smart, and funny too, and fun to be around and I just...I just really love you.

Idris clenched her jaw slightly. This... it couldn't be happening. Love?! When had that happened?! He couldn't... She didn't... A Goddess? Her? She stood stock still, as though she had been turned into just another rock decorating the plains. How could it be love?
The line had been crossed though. She could now see how they'd been dancing along that line for some time. This was why he'd acted so foolish those times... and it was why he could make her smile where few others could. Finally, her held breath slowly escaped her. "Issa... Are you certain..?" She couldn't... Love was so... No one else had ever... Gods, did Issa understand what it meant if...? if...?

What if she didn't like him? She looked kind of flustered. Was flustered good? Gods above, was it good?!
"Idris... I've never been more certain of anything in my entire life." He stated with certainty; a sort of plain declaration that held none of the nervousness from before. The young lion still held a nervous twitch, but this...this he couldn't falter with. "I know that I'm not the best Hunter, a-a-nd I know that I embarrass you...If you don't want to be my mate, I'll understand."

Idris took a sharp breath. He... was so... certain. Wow... "Issa, you really are a fool," she said with a soft chuckle. She couldn't believe it... That little smile peeking up, she stepped forward and nuzzled her head under his chin. Her mate... Issa. That fumbling, impulsive, silly little cub was now grown, and in love. How had she fallen into such a thing? "I love you, too."

"Uh, yeah..." He chuckled nervously, now more confused than anything. Was she...? Issa stiffened at first, terrified that he was dreaming and she would disappear in a cloud of smoke. When she didn't he nuzzled her in return, running his cheek along the top of her mane as he'd dreamed of for so long.
"I feel like I could fly," He murmured. Holding her like that, like a true mate should...it was intoxicating. "I love you so much, Idris...Should we...pick a den or something now? I doubt you'll want to stay with my mother." He chuckled.
