At Eanah's insistence they limited their practices to locations in and around the tent for weeks after she had completed her stint as Rhazes' errand girl. Even though she had never shared her reasons for wanting them to do so, she was fairly certain Leyn had guessed at them all on his own. If the drakein saw her on the sands with Thren, if he figured out that she had bonded with one of his kind, she would either have a colossal fight on her hands or she would be murdered where she stood. Eanah was glad Leyn didn't press the issue. She didn't think she could adequately explain the depth of her concern anyway.
The truth of the matter was, she had grown extremely attached to the little Kiandri in a very short amount of time, and no scaled, loudmouthed bully was going to take him away from her. Thren seemed to grow larger by the day, but although he was getting smarter, it wasn't in proportion to his size. It made confining him to the area around the tent nearly impossible, especially when he began to learn how to speak.
It wasn't proper speech by any means, not even close. Thren had heard Leyn call his pupil by name frequently enough to grasp that it began with a letter he could say, so he did.eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee The drakein's name for his mother streamed out of his mouth every time he wanted something, and he wanted something almost all the time these days. Usually the eerie call was followed closely by more of his snickering laughter, but he sometimes threw tantrums too, like he was doing today. The sun was bright, the temperature was pleasant for the desert, and the drakein wanted to go out."eeeeeeeeeeee""Thren.""EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE""Stop it."
He showed her an image of himself viciously clawing at the man-thing she didn't like. The keinling wasn't expecting her to slap the bedroll next to her quite as sharply as she did. Thren stopped flailing around the interior of the tent and sat up very tall, his eyes wide with surprise.
Eanah sighed. "Fine. I suppose we can go out for a bit today, maybe do some hunting. Just... don't think things like that, all right?" She pat at the drakein's nose and he calmed, chirping happily and pushing his head into her hand. If Thren went looking for Rhazes himself, it would be an unmitigated disaster.
This morning Leyn was in town, so Eanah and Thren were soon crouching in the sand alone, on silent lookout for dragons and other creatures of the desert that they could take down on their own. Despite the slightly cooler weather, Eowyn was still unnaturally warm and, sensing Eanah's discomfort, Thren hunched closer, stretching a small wing out over her head to shield her from the early sun. It was an awkward hiding spot, but it served its unintentional purpose well. It didn't take long for something to wander into their midst.
Thren hummed softly and Eanah nodded in response, gesturing off around the approaching dragon's back. It was a young Kiandri, but it was still larger than either of them and might be tricky to bring down. Oblivionite and drakein crept around the dragon, and when they were in position, Eanah drew her scepter out from under her cloak and sent a bolt of power at their foe's feet. There was an inhuman shriek and suddenly Thren was on the Kiandri, tearing at its neck with mouth and claws. The girl set the dragon's body ablaze as Thren hopped away, and soon their opponent was little more than a heap of unmoving meat.
Eanah smiled broadly, dropping to the sand and wrapping her arms around her bloody drakein.
"Good job, Thren!" she said, chuckling as he eee'd into her ear. It had been a very long time since she had killed anything properly. Too long. With any luck, she could avoid telling Leyn just how small their catch had actually been.
