Yamika liked being amongst the dark of the dense trees. Not only did she mostly blend in (apart from the white fetlocks, which she occasionally muddied when she felt like being even more unnoticed), the surroundings felt as though they reflected her sometimes dark mood. She didn't want to be hidden, but she a small part of her felt it necessary, still felt that her family could find her, and there would be repercussions for her decision not to stay and fight with them.
Though by now when she took time to mull her situation over, she figured that maybe she was being extra paranoid. For months she had not seen tail, nor clawed wing of a Kalona. As she stood in the gloom of the forest, her pale purple eyes peering into the dark, she wondered if maybe she should think about leaving the shadows, and trying to spend more time in the light..and even in company, if she could find some that felt as non-threatening as she thought she could cope with.
These thoughts in mind, she slowly starting walking, her hooves crunching the dried remnants of last year's leaves, heading towards what she remembered as being the edge of the forest. Her ears flicked, catching all the sounds as she moved, the outline of her body hazy and blurring as she did so. The mare paused some yards in from where she could see the trees beginning to thin out, still carrying on an inner monologue about whether she could be so bold as to seek out company, when she caught a sound a distance from her....maybe she would see someone sooner than she expected.
Stock still, she listened, breath held as well, as she tried to work out if she was hearing something large far away or just something small close by.

Zero was humming, as he usually did, gliding cheerfully through the trees, out on his daily patrol through the woods, making sure the perimeter was clear of any unsavory guests. Leaves rustled as he passed, but were generally undisturbed. He could not crunch leaves below his hooves, he barely had any substance below his knee caps to do so! His curly tail bounced behind him as he slipped between the towering trees and over gnarled vines.
He wrinkled his nose, something or someone else was here, his little herd of misfits wouldn't come out this far, not even Jet with his love of adventure seemed to like venturing into these woods, but he enjoyed them. The quiet was lovely, the air was crisp and the leaves were fun to roll in (when no one was watching of course) His nostrils flared as he peered from behind the eyes of his costume, there was a patch of darkness, a little ways off, darkness was nothing unusual around these parts, there was quite a lot of it really. But this particular patch was moving. He stared hard at it, tilting his head a bit, his long costume ears lolling comically to the side.
" Is that...a ghost?" He had never seen a shadow ghost before, but he hadn't been in this land all that long, perhaps they were a common occurrence? He thought about hiding and perhaps finding a better place to see from. But then he smiled, finding the thought quite silly, he couldn't "hide" after all, in these woods he shone like a beacon of white. So he figured if there was someone there, he might as well go and say hi! He curled his tail up and trotted towards the distant shadow, the soft flapping of the costume fabric heralding his approach.
Yamika's eyes rounded in her head, going as wide as she could ever remember them going! Her ears flicked back, going flat, and she looked around hurriedly, wondering if she could duck out of sight, but the strange creature was too close now. Even if he didn't see where she went, he was near enough to find her by the noise such movement would make...and then he spoke, and she found the question so startling, and amusing that she found herself laughing out loud for the first time in, well, longer than she could remember as he came gliding into full view.
'Am I a ghost?' she echoed, as she replied to the - apparition seemed the only word she could think of - when she had recovered from the little bout of laughter.
'No more than you..' she said, her voice trailing off as she took time to really take in how he looked. What she could see of his legs was the most fascinating to her, the wispiness was like hers, yet his were even more intangible. When she tore her gaze from his limbs, her expression was a great deal more puzzled. She wasn't sure what to make of the cloth draped over him, and she wondered about how he looked beneath.
'Sorry for staring.' she added, realising she was doing so, but probably too late that he hadn't noticed.

" Oh! I wasn't sure if someone was actually here or not" He chirped. He found that the shadow was in fact someone, a lady someone! He was pleasantly surprised, and it shown out of his jet black eyes, his tail curled and uncurled as she laughed. He stopped a good few feet before her, a smile plastered across his face, shining below the billed cap that made up the head of his costume. " Well that's true enough!" he chuckled warmly, the mare had seemed pure black and more wispy than even he, but upon closer inspection s he had white markings, bright splashes of color that lit up the darkness, why, even straight from her forehead sprung a single horn. He had never met a unicorn, but he had heard of them. " Oh that's fine, i'm surely used to it! Costume, half mast vanishing act n all" He tilted his head " surely you get looks just as much as I~ I've personally never met another that shared the, ah~ wispy trait."
He tilted his head down, eyeing his legs " Well you get the idea" His chest rumbled with laughter " So Hi! My name's Zero. What's yours?"
He was bright; bright in colour, bright and cheery in personality. His smile, his demeanour, it was like someone had switched a light on in the forest, and Yamika felt herself glad that she hadn't secreted herself away and avoided this meeting. She found herself returning his smile, though hers was tentative from lack of use, and she was still very much on her guard.
'I'm here, as here as I can be I guess.' she replied. She needed to relearn conversation as well, she'd taken to talking to her surroundings at one point for a lack of any company, but it was only so long you could do that before you felt like you were going mad, or would at least look that way.
'Costume? Is that what you call that, cloth thing that you are wearing? I've never..I mean, it's unusual.' she stumbled on her words, trying to talk about it in an off-hoof manner, as if it wasn't the most unusual thing she'd seen. Maybe she'd been alone too long though and it was more usual than she thought? His tail though..she was sure that was a fairly unique trait.
'No? I haven't beyond my family..it's a genetic thing for me.' Yamika replied, her voice faltering as she said 'family', her thoughts never far from the place and Soquili she couldn't call home again.
'Yamika.' she gave her name, giving him another one of her smiles, which were slipping out more and more around this stallion. 'I'm, well I am pleased to meet you Zero.'

" Ah, yes, well~ unusual is the word for it! Mhm, "costume" That's what the two leggers called it, a young one made it for me, she thought I'd make a good "pet" I suppose this is a canine thing." He chuckled, shifting a bit to make the material flap and bounce comically. " I could take it off, it's just something that makes others feel better around me I guess~" He tossed his head back a little, the head piece dropping back over his neck like a hood, a spill of white mane framing a friendly, very normal equine face. His eyes were black like twin spheres of onyx. " There now" He grinned, his strange tail curling and uncurling behind him.
" Really?" His ears perked " I've never had a family that I can remember, maybe they had this too? Hah, and then there's the tail, sometimes i wondered if i was not just a very large horse snail!" He tried to make jokes, noting that she seemed a wee bit uncomfortable at times in the conversation. " Ya-mi-ka" He sounded out and beamed at her " that's a lovely name, it suits you as surely as that pretty horn on your head." He dipped his head, his mane, poofing and curling in odd places, goodness, costume hat hair!
" Nice to meet you as well~ you just out for a walk then Yamika? Out in the "spooky woods" no less! i'm sure the others outside this place think you're a brave one! I like this place just fine, it's quiet, peaceful even in the dark."
'I confess to never seeing anyone with something similar.' Yamika said, though she was confused as to why he would want to cover himself just to spare the feelings of others? He was different sure, but she was too, and although she had spent many months in hiding, she would never hide her body.
'Ohh..' was all that escaped from her mouth when he flipped the costume off from his head, revealing his charming, and handsome face. She was flustered, a very unusual feeling, and for a moment she couldn't find her voice again.
'You're..well, you shouldn't be wearing that costume.' she said adding with a little smile. 'I'm glad you took it off. You look..well, you're wonderfully unique.'
She shook her head, but laughed a little along with him. 'I take after my grandfather mostly. I have quite a mixed parentage..my father is like myself, only solid in body. My mother is...' She couldn't quite bring herself to say what her mother was, she wasn't sure of his opinions on Kalonas after all.
'Not the nicest..' she finished lamely, hoping he would accept that. His words about her name and appearance kind of washed over her, unused as she was to compliments, though she did glance away quickly before looking at him again.
'I was, well, in a way. I've been kind of on the move, hiding really.' she confessed with a short sigh. 'I don't find them spooky, the dark is quite a comfort when you're in the right mood.'

"No? Sometimes it's fun to wear" He chuckled " lots of folks are uneasy with "ghosts", especially when they get lost in these woods, but not a lot will be scared of someone in a sheet an a puppy face. They don't question the feet~" He wiggled his nose " I have met others who use pelts to ward off skin walkers, who'll think that they are one of their own. Neat tactic against those fluffy rotters you know" He grinned " suspicious lot, they don't ghosts either~"
" We're both unique ey?" He laughed " Well at least there you have a family to compare to? That's a good thing. Perhaps someday I'll find out if I have one as well! Mayhap my father was a snail and my mum a ghost raised as a dog? No? too silly? Heh~" He was a jolly sort, but not much slipped by his attention, including her uneasiness with the topic of her family " Huh~ well that's a waste, I'd like to think all mothers were nice sorts, your father nearly disappearin too? Why you're great at keepin it together~ Must be an interesting family for sure~
He blinked at her and tilted his head in question " hidin? Why would ya be hiding Yamika? Your mean ol mum or somethin?" He breathed in deep, the air was crisp and loamy " Well that's true~ dark is quite nice, comfortable. I've lived in it most o my life. Daylight is just dandy sure, but in daylight I can't even see my own legs! It's pretty disconcerting you know, thinkin that perhaps they ran off without me~"
'It hides your charming face though.' Yamika countered, smiling though. 'And I fail to see how they could be scared of you without the sheet, you sort of startled me with it, but without it all I see is your friendly expressions..but then, I'm used to my appearance, so yours without the costume could never spook me.'
Skinwalkers? She'd heard the rumours about them as she had been travelling, but her luck had held fast in that respect and she'd never come close to meeting one. Any time she found traces of a predator (bones and the like), she would change her direction, and put as much distance as possible between herself and the signs.
Yamika was brought out of her thoughts by his silly musings on his own parentage and she giggled. 'I would like to think they are as nice as I am finding you, I'm sorry you have never known them..though, family has its own problems.' she added hastily. 'Or it can, everyone is different after all.'
She chuckled again, his levity was helping, helping her out of the gloom that she'd shrouded herself in, and though it was hard talking about herself, he was making it easier than she had thought it would be.
'If they go off without you, they must miss you as they will always return at night.' she replied, hoping her feeble attempt at humour would be received as at least slighty funny.
'In a way, though I am unwelcome with all my family. I cannot go home again.'
It had been so long now since she had left home, that she couldn't imagine returning home. She thought it unlikely her mother would have forgiven her at any rate. Her siblings? Maybe, but she knew of none that weren't of the same mindset as her parents. No, it was just safer to never go back, and if that meant never knowing..maybe she would have to just make her peace with that.

He blinked at her and then laughed heartily " Oho! you got me there~" He shrugged a little, cloth rustling " Simply, you would have more reason to be used to it. But true, sometimes my unusual outfit surprises others." Now that he thought about it that did happen quite a bit, but most folk he found lost in the woods just wanted to get out, so he would quietly lead them to the edge of the forest. Oh they'd never come back, n that was fine. He never understood why they were so very frightened anyway.
" Gawsh" He replied, making a goofy face " Well maybe so! Perhaps my parents would be as silly as me, or maybe just as silly lookin, you think?" He chuckled, peering quizzically at her. He didn't want to pry about her family if she didn't want him to, since it seemed to fluster her so. How bad could they really be? Perhaps it was best not to ask sometimes~ " Different, oh yes, we're both a pair of differents ourselves, no?" He shifted a bit, making his costume sway " boo" He twiddled his ears at her.
" Unwelcome?" He raised an eyebrow, a frown slowly dragging down his smile " why would any family say their child is "unwelcome" why that's just rude you know! All family should be decent to one another, in my opinion anyway. Love what you got n all that." He wrinkled his nose " So you do not have a home? Thats...just plain awfulterrible!" He exclaimed with a huff. " So you're just out wandering looking for a new place or hidin from your past Yamika? How long have you been gone from home?" He looked down, concerned, true he often led frightened foals and lost two leggers out of the woods, but when they got out, they always had somewhere or someone to return to. Home. But what if they didn't?
Yamika suddenly thought she might be seeing as overstepping her bounds; they had just met after all! She gave him a little smile and said; 'Well, let it. Much as I think you shouldn't worry about what others think of you without it, if you enjoy wearing it, you should.'
There..but she did hope she would get to enjoy his company for a while longer at least, and that the hood wouldn't go back on during that time. She shook her head at his next words.
'I don't know how they could look, but the word is 'unique', not silly.' she said firmly, guessing by his expression he was making light but not wanting this friendly, funny stallion to even have the tiniest thought that he was anything other than extraordinary. It was almost as if the spirits had decided to give her a break - after the loss of her, the loneliness and the feeling she couldn't stop travelling - here was a reminder that not everything was hard, and that maybe she could stop running and make friends, if not her own family.
She chuckled again. Yamika had laughed alot since she'd bumped into this cheerful spirit, and that was something else she wanted to hang on to. 'A pair of differents..I don't know how that works, but I guess we are.'
She looked down at the ground as Zero spoke, her tail flickering, the movement causing it to look on occasion as though it wasn't attached, until she stilled it and the drifting form of it became visible again, her mood swinging low again as she mused on his words. It would be nice if that was the case but for her to be accepted would be to change her nature. And that she did not want to do.
'Not one where I am welcome at any rate.' she gave a half-shrug, before speaking again. 'How long? It's been..so long that I don't remember. And yes, both I suppose. I'd like a place where I'm welcomed and where I can be myself.'

He wrinkled his nose, the whole situation like a bad scent on the wind. Why, it was if her family was made of skinwalkers and hooligans. Who would throw their perfectly nice daughter out into the world and have her be unwelcome back? That was just rude in his book! Humph! He curled his tail, thinking of something, he nearly congratulated himself for thinking it! " Well if you've nowhere to go, would you like me to show you around here? I live in these parts with a little rag tag herd I'm sort of...babysitting for now." He chuckled " Oh they're all a little strange but we're a band of merry misfits you see~" He looked around, all was quiet save the occasional rustle of dry leaves skipping over the bones of the trees. "Somehow all the lonely souls who don't belong anywhere come find us in these woods, perhaps it's something magical, who knows really" He barked with laughter " Perhaps i'm a fairy gosh dog! Or somethin...haha" He tilted his head, his mane getting tousled by a slight breeze " What do ya say?"
Yamika regarded his expression, wondering what he was thinking, and then noticed for the first time his tail curling up. It was fascinating, and she wondered if it was tied to his moods, or just something he liked to do. Either way, it was kind of..what was the best word? Endearing.
She was startled from her own thoughts by his offer to show her around what she was realising had to be his home. She gnawed on her lower lip before answering, radiating indecision. It wasn't Zero that was causing her to pause, it was the others in his herd.
'Strange..but you would vouch for them all?' she asked. Where ever she went, she had to know she would be safe. A smile slipped across her face amid her fretting, as he brightened the mood in his own special way.
'You'll keep with me?' she asked, tentative, wondering if it was too much to ask, but he was the only one she knew here.

" Of course I would" He answered promptly, a comforting grin plastered across his face " Granted some of them may be a bit stranger than others, but they're all good of heart, the previous leader made sure of that. I met him when I first came here, he was sure a startling looking guy, but a good stallion at the core, he had to leave to go looking for something, or someone, but he figured I could watch his friends for him, make sure nothing bad happened." He chuckled " There are some nice ladies and awkward young stallions, nothing too odd" His tail twitched behind him " Besides, I wouldn't drag you into any kind of danger, that wouldn't be very gentleman like at all!" He cracked a goofy grin " I definitely promise i'll stay right next to ya" He pricked one ear in the general direction of where his little rag tag herd stayed " Eyup, they're that way, actually we found the nice parts of these woods, you know, there's even sunshine and some flowers this time of year, oh! and a little spring, it's a pretty quaint little patch for us strange folk." He stared in that direction for a minute " it's the heart of the forest almost, kinda like our little herd, we look odd and spooky to most, but we've got a nice place and some sunshine in the soul, huh? I must be a poet or something, huh!" He laughed merrily.
It would never be the looks that bothered Yamika, she wasn't in the the least bit shallow after all. Just the actions.
'I don't mind how they look or even act , I just want..safety.' she replied, her wings twitching a little, showing that her nerves were acting up. She strove to remain calm - Zero had been nothing but kind and funny, and if it was all an act, well, it was the best she'd ever seen.
'If you say they are okay though..' she said, after a short pause, in which she decided that she wasn't going to, or at least she was going to try not to let her past completely taint her to meeting new Soquili.
'I'll be happy to meet them. And it sounds lovely.' she chuckled, laughing along with him for a while.
'You..you have a good heart Zero.' Yamika said, shyly. 'I'm glad I met you.'
She looked away, almost as if she were pretending she hadn't just said that. 'So, umm, you want to show me around?'
