✥ Characters :: Ruria and Akemi
✥ Location :: Woodland area near Poena Privus. <********>

Akemi leaned back against the bolder she has propped herself against. This was it. She knew it in her gut.

The Witch-Eater was stronger, faster and more powerful that she was, still the she-b***h had refused to run. Now she did not have enough energy to create a portal to safety, she even doubted her ability to stand. Blood tricked down her face, pooling in the crease of her breasts. Bleeding. It felt kind of nice at this point, there was something soothing to feel the liquid trickle down her frame.

She was so tired, all she wanted to do was sleep. However she knew it was game over if she did. She spat the metallic tasting liquid from her mouth and cursed softly.

"Come out come out wherever you are."

The Witch-Eater cooed. His attire was also stained in blood, he had not been unscathed from the combat, maybe he had underestimated her. Picking her out as a weak target, a girl lost in the woods who turned out to be more trouble than he could imagine. She had heard stories in a nearby town of a monster lurking in the darkness, stealing young girls, using them to satisfy his desires before ripping out their hearts and leaving them for dead.

An old wives tale, or so she thought.

"There you are!"

Akemi's head snapped back to see his face just above her own. Damn it. She gritted her teeth and let out a low pitched growl. He pouted.

"Shuuuush. You have been quite a troublesome meal. Now be a good little dog and stay still."

Akemi barked with laughter, spitting in the mans eye. That sparked his temper. The Witch-Eater struck downwards but Akemi managed to find the strength to roll out of the way. She was not going to lay down and except her death, if she was going to fall prey to this monster she would go down fighting! She tried to summon her claws, but she shadows faded as soon as they formed. She could not even form spells anymore. <******** looked ahead, just in time to see the monster lunge for her.

Gods, it had been one mission after the other. Kill this! Snatch that! And while you're out, buy me that special brew they've got in Lumena, I have a craving for it....

Ruria brandished an emotional fist at the thought of her leader, always barking out orders to her. Now it was her least favorite mission -- Scouting. Not even scouting a particularly dangerous area, but the local forest. Precious time she could be using to back and visit Aodhan in Lumena, she thought.

It was then that she heard a ruckus in the distance -- thrashing, grumbling, shouting. The thoughts of the annoyed girl dissolved into a serious, battle-oriented demeanor, and she slunk close to the shadows, hastening her way towards the noise.

She knew what he was the moment she saw him -- even though she only saw his backside. Witch eater. She had killed enough to practically know their scent and swagger by heart. Was he alone? No...a harder look revealed his clothes mangled, bloodied. The purr of laughter in his voice suggested he was predating upon one -- and then she saw her. Roughed up, about as gentle as a rattlesnake, about to have her heart literally ripped from her body.

Within moments, Ruria closed the distance between herself and the witch eater, and instead of getting a delicious fistful of witch heart, he instead received a harsh facefull of Ruria's boot as she lashed her leg upwards, delivering the kick to his jawline. He staggered backward, clutching his mandible, and glared at the two females with wild, angry eyes, eyes that began to show the glimmer of fear as he took in Ruria's figure.

Though the average person would never know her name, she was the most popular 'scary story' among the vilest of witch eaters. Rumors of the Blackheart's red-eyed ghost who left corpses in her wake spread between them, far and wide.

"You b***h," he growled, rubbing his jaw. His lips twitched into a sardonic and eager smile. "Mm, I think I know who you are...blackie. I was expecting something a little more....I don't know...strong." A cheshire grin spread over his face. Why, if this girl was the red-eyed ghost, he'd eat his hat! Such a violent creature couldn't possibly reside in such a small-framed, delicate-looking body. "So, two now, hm? Dinner and dessert...but don't you want to play a little before we eat?" he cracked into peals of laughter.

Ruria glanced down at Akemi, assessing her injuries -- she looked as if she had definitely seen better days. Still, she had to give her credit for holding out as long as she did. "Please stay as still as possible," she said to her. "You are in no shape to assist, and I fear if you try, you may only acquire more injuries."

She withdrew her ruby gaze from the girl, and stared vacantly towards the witch eater.

"Well, let us play a game of tag. If I catch you, I kill you. There is no base." she told him. Though her voice was playful, her face was void of expression.

"Shouldn't it be you fleeing from me, attempting to play hero to this delicious little lass?" he ran a casual hand through his hair, chuckling. "So cute, both of you. I really could just eat you u---" his sentence ended abruptly as Ruria bolted at him, black fire flickering around her, gathering in her palms. He dodged her visible attacks easy enough, masses of the swirling black fire shooting past him, missing him each time.

"Hah! Learn to aim, you foolish--" he stopped as he noticed Ruria had stopped, her fingers outstretched like claws as she raised her arms, her soft lips curling into a gentle smile. Too late, he looked behind him, noticing the missed balls of black fire had converged above him, each one forming a large, spectral black, lance-like sword that hovered ominously, waiting to skewer him.

"Tag." said Ruria.

One after the other, the spectral blades pierced him, impaling his body like a laboratory specimen to the ground. Guttural moans laced with the gargle of blood diminished as he bled out, and the black fire returned to Ruria. She leaned down to him, brushing the hair out of his eyes tenderly, and leaned her lips to his ear, whispering. "You're it." And then, he was dead.

Ruria dusted herself off casually as she returned to the girl's side, and crouched down to have a closer inspection. "Are you capable of walking? Or do I need to ferry you back to the city on my back?" She removed a small canteen of water from her side, offering it to her. Ruria wasn't used to doing rescues...not at all. She was the assassin, the one who struck from the shadows, destructive purposes only! Rescuing and caring for one was a knight's duty. Just what happened now? All she had on her to take care of this girl's wounds were a few bandaids with cartoon skulls decorating them, and she had not one ounce of healing ability in her whatsoever.

"Were you out here trying to challenge him?" she asked coyly, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She liked to see fierce resolve in others, or good fighting spirits.

Akemi braced herself, but the hit never came.

The wolf girl opened her eyes, only to see that someone else had come to her rescue. It was a hit to her pride, which to most might seem somewhat important in a situation like this, but not to Akemi. She felt like she had been punched in a way quite different to what she was expecting.

"Please stay as still as possible...You are in no shape to assist, and I fear if you try, you may only acquire more injuries."

The she-b***h's head snapped upwards. She did not know what to do, the girl said stay put, but ever cell in her body was telling her to stand up and fight. As the two witches indulged in battle-side banter, Akemi gritted her teeth, ashamed of her own weakness. She tried to thrust herself back onto her feet, only to have her hands stabilize her, stopping the girl from eating a face-full of dirt. She couldn't move.

            Damn it.

The red-head looked up, just in time to see the blades pierce the Witch-Eater in all directions. Akemi froze, looking on the scene with wide eyes. For a moment she stopped struggling and watched the man bleed out on the ground, staining the lush grass red. She was so engrossed in the scene she did not notice the girl knell next to her. Akemi's eyed darted to meet her own, and for a moment there was silence.

            No.

She would not allow herself to be carried back like some injured animal. Never the less, she accepted the woman's water with a small nod of gratitude. After a moment she pushed onto her feet, rather shakily. After another she had regained her balance and put one foot infront of the other.

Akemi shuffled over to the corpse of the Witch-Eater, for now ignoring the others question. There was something more important she needed to do. She looked down at him, then after a moment stomped on his face out of frustration, again and again. Anger making her forget the hurt, making her embrace it as punishment for her failure.

"YOU SON OF A b***h. THEY WERE LITTLE GIRLS, ALL OF THEM. THEY DID NOT STAND A CHANCE. HOW DARE YOU LIVE FOR SO LONG. HOW DARE YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO BREATHE THE AIR MEANT FOR THEM. YOU b*****d."

She did not know what she was more angry about, the crimes he committed or the fact that Akemi was not the one able to land the final blow. She did not stop until his head popped under the force of her heel, the shock went up her leg and made the girl stumble back, still she sunk her feet into the ground. She had been on the floor enough for one day.

It was then that she remembered she had company. She composed herself, not wanting to admit how hard standing was. She relaxed her face, trying to hide the pain.

"No. I thought he was an old wives tale, a monster made up by mothers to stop their daughters from wandering too deep into the woods. If I had known there was any truth behind the rumor I would have though. Maybe things would have been different if he did not get the jump on me. Coward."

He was strong. Akemi could respect his power, but not his will. Preying on the weak, striking in the darkness. He was a coward, and died in pain. That had to be enough justice for now. Akemi was not a sore looser, but loosing on unfair terms had sparked a rage inside her.

"I am sorry, you should have not had to jump to my aid."

Apologizing for her weakness seemed more necessary to Akemi than thanking the other for her actions. Akemi flipped her hair, breaking the bonds between it and the blood that had stuck it to her face.

"I owe you my maidenhood and my life. I intend to pay you back for both. Miss....?"

Ruby eyes settled on the crimson-haired girl, a stoic expression filling Ruria's face as she watched her pummel the corpse of the majin. "Desist, he is nothing more than a husk now. He's paid for his crimes with great pain and his life."

The girl was trying her hardest to mask the pain she certainly must be enduring -- an animal instinct that followed some who chose the life of battle. Hide your weaknesses, even at your weakest, less they be preyed upon. "You should rest a little. You'll strain your body beyond its limits. I'm sure you wouldn't want to permanently mess something up if you insist on a life lusting for strength." she waited for her to heed her advice, and when she still seemed as stubborn as before to continue standing, Ruria gave a slight shove, toppling her to sit on the mossy ground again. "REST!"

As the girl told her reason and her story, Ruria knelt in front of her, wrinkling up her features as she counted the visible wounds on her soft features, and then, withdrawing a small box of bandaids, began ruthlessly adhering them to her, until she resembled more of a stickerbook than a person. "You don't need to apologize," she murmured as she continued applying the plethora of small bandaids. "It's more or less my job to eradicate nasties. It's a shame I'm not a knight, though...I'd be a bit better supplied to 'rescue'. I don't usually save lives, you realize...mostly I end them....There." she applied the last bandaid in the box, looked her over, and gave an approving nod.

"Maiden...hood? You mean.... pay you back....for both..owe me...maidenhood..." ruria mumbled darkly, and, completely misinterpreting, gasped, her cheeks a little red, and teetered back on her heels until she fell into the plush mossy ground. "I-I'm not....I'm very grateful for the offer, but I fear I don't f-feel that way about women! And there's this knight I sort of...might..maybe...like..maybe...I think..." her voice trailed off.

A life lusting for strength? No. She lusted for nothing less than perfection.

It was then that the other girl pushed her to the ground. The red-head landed on her bum with a slight THUD, the air rushing form her lungs. Akemi pouted, spitting more blood to the side of her, she must have lost a tooth.

            "Pushy."

She mumbled, running her tongue over her teeth to make sure they were all accounted for, and they all were. Thank God. Well... then why was her mouth filling up with blood again? She must have bit her cheek. Akemi was in deep concentration, trying to find the source of her bleeding.

She was completely unaware of the fact she was slowly being decorated with cutesie looking skulls. Not that she would have complained. Like Ruria, Akemi shared a love of macabre themed turned adorable. No doubt she would come to appreciate the bandages when she regained her concentration, but blood loss had made her light headed and dreamy. It was not until she heard the girl stutter that her search for the cut in her mouth ended. Akemi looked on for a moment vacantly.

            ....

            Then started laughing uncontrollably.

That kind of laugh that comes straight from ones stomach, loud and uncontrollable. Boisterous.

            "I-it hurts. Goodness, it hurts!"

She exclaimed, punching the floor next to her. Trying her best to control her giggles. She liked this one. She made her laugh. Akemi wrapped her arms around herself, snuggling her -barely existent- breasts and making kissy face.

"Ooooooh. A Knight, eeeeh? Sounds exciting."

She winked at the other. Muscular frame. Sturdy armor. Large, ahem, weapon. She could not blame the girl for liking such a figure, Knights were damn hot in her opinion. Akemi let out a deep breathe, finally calming down from her fit of laughter and using her arms to stabilize her. The she-b***h crossed her legs, and looked on the other with more serious eyes.

"So, it's your job to eradicate nasties, and you are no Knight, what does that make you then? Don't tell me you are some wandering do-gooder mage, kitted out in battle lingerie! My pride would not take such a wound. No... you are too powerful for that. I can smell it. There is no shame in being bested by a character like you."

The woman gave a devilish grin as she awaited the reply.

Ruria's face reddened to a deep shade of scarlet as she watched the girl mimic romance with an invisible knight, and her expression became horrified. "T-That's....! Desist your romantic seizures!" she huffed and wrapped her long twintails around her fingertips, using them almost as protective tentacles.

"Battle lingerie, my foot. If I wore clunky armor like some others do I wouldn't be able to move." she gave another huff. "I'm a Blackheart. The ones who do what the knights can't or won't...the darkest, most unpleasant deeds. Leave the rescuing to the knights." she grinned, a dark but coy look in her eyes. Though she had taken a liking to Aodhan and respected Azra'iel, she still cast jests towards the Knights, secretly respecting and envying them, but she would never admit it. "And what are you, rummaging around by yourself in the forest after such a creature? Fancy yourself a vigilante?" she kept her calm smile on her face, studying the girl in front of her. It wasn't everyday she socialized, let alone with someone who wasn't a blackheart or a person about to be decapitated by Guillotine.

Akemi smirked at the girls protest, raising her eyebrow at the moments made about her attire.

"Don't huff. I'm on your side, silly!"

Akemi chuckled, sticking her tongue out at the girl in playful jest. She was cute, it was hard to imagine she had impaled a man not five minuets ago. She nodded and hummed as she explained her position, tilting her head to the side like a curious pup.

"A Blackheart? I have heard that term before. You're a huntress, of sorts?"

Akemi had lived a very sheltered life. The way's of the world were lost on her. Were as others would recognize such an organization, she did not. Though she tried her best to keep her confusion and curiosity to herself. It was hard for her to admit to these things. She smirked when asked what she was and gave a small shrug.

"Vigilante? No. Just some wandering pilgrim. I was heading towards Poena Privus, before that a*****e jumped me. I hear there are some strong warriors there. I want to see how I match my strength against their own."

It was a part truth. She was heading that way, but it was not by any means her destination.

The she-b***h closed her eyes, and then once again stumbled to her feet.

Ruria raised a serious finger. "A blackheart is the shadow that suffocates evil, the dagger that pierces the monster's jugular! The cutting wind that rends the flesh of villains into tiny bite-size bits. We kill witch eaters and Spiritus, among other things. Fairly violently, usually...Not the benevolent kind."

She stood up, offering a hand to help the girl up, realizing then she hadn't yet asked her name. "Come on, then. Back to the city with you. There are plenty of strong people willing to get into a bar brawl with you..uhm... what is your name anyways? You may call me.....The Skeleton General."

Obviously, it wasn't her real name, but the name of her favorite character frmo a game. Would this girl be the first to call her such a legendary name?

"So, you value strength, then? What sorts?"

            "That sounds very... official."

Akemi rubbed the back of her head and gave a nervous chuckle at Ruria's explanation. That did sound exciting, maybe a little morbid. Her mood soon lightened with a small giggle at the name the girl had given. How odd!

"The Skeleton General? Hmmm... In that case you can call me The Red Hurricane."

Akemi had minimal knowledge of games. The reference went right over her head. Never the less, she offered a title equally as outrageous. The lights behind the hallows of her mask burned brighter with the question. Did she value strength? Obviously.

            "I like fighting."

            She put bluntly.

"Nose busting. Bone breaking. Lip splitting. Muscle flexing. High kicking, Swift punching. Rib shattering. Tooth chipping. Back breaking. Pelvis cracking. Skull crushing - Battle."

Akemi took the girls hand and pulled herself up, resting a hand on her hip quite casually after her balance was restored. The excitement in her voice was unmissable.

"I want to be known across the land as a great warrior. So one day, little runts like me will seek me out to prove their value."

The she-b***h looked up at the sun. The day was still young and the brightness of the day only fueled her motivation. She might have been battered and bruised, but all this talk was getting her pumped for battle.

"I do value strength. I also value determination and ambition, and one day the very Earth itself will tremble before me."

She winked at The Skeleton General before resting a hand on her shoulder.

"Now if you do not mind. I am lost and itching for a bawl."

Ruria's eyes widened as the heard her title. "You're...A WRESTLER! I had an inkling. Do you have a persona mask? Can I see it? What's your catch phrase, I must know! Have you ever struck someone with a folding chair? Is it effective?"

She led the way back to the road as the girl spoke about her aspirations, nodding as she listened. "With strength comes the repercussions. You must be ready to also accept those who would snuff out your life to benefit their own. If you really want to test yourself, you should consider being formally trained, maybe through the knights or blackhearts...though, our organization doesn't accept everyone. You're either born into it, or accepted through reverence of skill and strength or actions."

Ruria shifted her eyes to the sky briefly to assess their position, and pushed north. "The city is this way, not very far, really. You really should heal up at a hospital first, though... Majin attacks tend to really drain the mana out of you, even if you don't realize it. It's why they're so effective against witches."

"INDEED. MY MASK IS THAT OF A BONE-WOLF. A MOST FEARSOME CREATURE."

Akemi let a rather toothy smirk consume her lips. She placed delicate fingers onto her mask, and nudged it slightly to draw the girls attention to her face, bright red eyes shinning brightly from behind it. It was amazing the added confidence such a thing could provide. As long as she was wearing this she was the Hurricane and nothing could touch her.

"My catchphrase.... Hmm. I guess... knowing me, it should be something very intimidating indeed! I will get back to you on that one. Skeleton General. Unless you have any suggestions?"

Akemi listened to what Ruria had to say. People wanting her dead? Well that was sure to come with the territory. Yet, it was not something that scared her, or something she had given very much thought to at all. It was a very black and white topic.

"Haha. Well if someone comes along wanting to snuff out my life and I fail, I guess I was not strong enough to live. I have to make sure that does not come to pass, and always get stronger!"

The girl looked over, rather curious at the Blackheart's suggestion. Formal training? Would that life suit her? It was an interesting suggestion, one that nobody should take lightly. Still, it had sparked a curiosity.

"Training? Me? Hmmm. Maybe that is something I could look into, sounds like a challenge. A promising one at that. I am always looking for the chance to improve my techniques."

Hospital? She did not like the sound of that. Akemi hated hospitals. She never seemed to visit them after victory, instead she dwelled in defeat, looking up at the ceiling form a white bed. No, they were not for her. Just as she was trying to come up with an excuse for dismissing the hospital, her stomach let out a loud growl. A reason had presented itself.

"Maybe. I just need some food and I will be fine. Sooooo hungry! Take me to a restaurant instead!"

The she-b***h smiled, following behind the other girl

Ruria giggled. "I fear you are far too bloodied to be admitted into a restaurant. They might mistake you for fresh beef. Not that you're akin to a bovine!" she waved her arms frantically in front of her apologetically.

After some time, they arrived at the gates to Poena Privus, the guards nodding a greeting toward them, though stopping them before they could enter.

"Scouting mission turned up a steak?" one asked, amused at his own joke, while the other began dialing the hospital.

Ruria looked to Akemi apologetically. "There was someone in the woods who needed eradication afterall. I walked in on his would-be-dinner...who is going to the hospital before she sees food."

She scowled knowingly towards the girl, giving her hair a slight toss. "I don't really know this rescue business, but I know you need some medical care. Hospitals have food, too. Lots...and lots....and lots....of pudding."

Akemi tried to come up with a smart remark to throw back at the guard. However her mind was still hazy from trauma and refused to send her mouth a witty remark. Instead she just stood, rather unstably, behind Ruria and pouted.

            "So pushy."

She sighed under her breath, slender fingers finding their way to her temples, which she began to massage rhythmically. After seeing the other girls glare Akemi gave up. She let out a loud huff of dissatisfaction, rested her hands on her hips and agreed to the torturous molestation of doctors and nurses.

"Okay. If that is what the Skeleton General commands. It seems like I am destined for the hospital. You better make sure they are stocked up, I will be a grouchy puppy without my pudding."

            ..........

An hour or so later Akemi was banished to an afternoon in bed. They had taken everything from her, her mask, her armor, even her undergarments! She sat in the accident and emergency ward, bandages scattered all over her body. A girl with red hair and red eyes wearing a white robe. She had never felt so.... exposed and intimidating. She hated it.

            "I can't breathe."

Akemi complained. She was not used to wearing anything around her stomach area and the sudden bandage which wrapped around her mid-region was most uncomfortable.

"All this fuss over a few cuts and bruises. They wonder why people are always thinking they are sick and dying, it is this mothering mentality which feeds the hypochondria. Just get on with it I say."

She sighed. Wondering if it was her who had it wrong and that she infact needed to be treated like such a delicate flower. She hated pity. She hated defeat and she hated this. With one last shake of her head the she-b***h threw a pot of pudding at the girl who had escorted her.

            "Hey.... General."

She called to get her attention.

"I was wondering about that training.... Would you help me find a teacher? This whole encounter has got me thinking... I think I need to learn from something other than bar brawls and battles with bandits if I want to achieve my goal."

Pudding was flying through the air, headed towards her face! Ruria reacted quickly, catching the small kettle, hissing out high-pitched "ow, ow!" as the heat singed her fingers at first. "How dare you waste such a delectable treat! It's practically priceless...." She placed it on the countertop nearest her, scowling over her shoulder like a savage beast protecting its prey.

"A teacher, you say...?" she gave a soft reversed leap to settle her rear atop the tabletop behind her, crossing her ankles in front of her as she raised her gaze to the ceiling in thought. "A teacher...well... Blackhearts taught me from birth, really. I know some of the bored ones might be up for teaching, or some of the scouts might... I've heard of one person who might, but I don't know him myself, and I hear he's quite a frightening atrocity to behold." Her own training had been provded by her parents -- before the magic they so wished to strengthen in her killed them -- and then she had been trained by their ex-leader, sparring with Sibelius from a young age, though he was quite older than her...and when he became leader, he helped to train her as well, and still sparred with her. "Our leader helped to train me, but while he's extremely powerful, he is probably too busy to train outsiders. And....Blackheart training...can be...quite harsh. Honing your magic and strength is one thing, but you also are taught to withstand torture, both mentally and physically, survival abilities...some have died in the process, or have been crippled. And you have to be able to do it...You have to be able to take a life. To become an executioner of justice."

"I thought you would appreciate it more. Sheesh."

Akemi shrugged her shoulders, a large mischievous smile coming to her lips. This one liked pudding, she would remember that. She sat up in the bed, folding her arms and listening to Ruria talk with a curious glimmer reflected in her eyes.

            "I don't scare easily."

Whatever this instructor looked like, she was sure she had seen worse. Akemi was amendment that she had stared the devil in the eyes before today, no creature would fill her heart with as much fear and sadness as the one that had haunted her for so many years. No fouler beast had ever existed, nor ever will. Still, she continued to listen to the General talk, pausing for a moment after she had finished pleading her case.

She was the one that had suggested the training, now it seemed like she wanted to detour her. Akemi sighed and rested her arm over her eyes, letting her body loose tension for the first time today. The painkillers were kicking in, she was starting to feel drowsy.

"Sounds like only a fool would choose such a life. I have been called a fool many times before."

The she-b***h smiled at the statement. Maybe she was s a fool. It would not surprise her. After a moment she straightened herself up again, leaning forward to wrap her arms around her knees and hug them close.

            "Don't worry about me."

The words escaped her lips softly, in a somewhat more feminine tone than was accustom of the wolf woman.

She did not know why Ruria was worried, it was really impossible for her to care so much about the condition of a stranger, wasn't it? Maybe she did not think she was capable of such a thing. Maybe she was hurting deep down, maybe the training had caused her wounds that Akemi herself could not understand. The truth was, she knew nothing about the General, not even her real name. At the same time, this girl knew nothing about her either.

Getting stronger. It was all Akemi lived for anymore.

.... It was something she would die for.

            Without regret or hesitation.
