Evan at first hadn’t been very interested in going to the masquerade ball, though the invitation had been lovely to receive. He simply didn’t have the time, or so he told himself. Truth was he really just didn’t want to go, it wasn’t really his thing or somewhere he felt he would fit in. This was Elliot’s sort of deal and he was just sure the young noble would be all over it, like the child he was. He had neatly tucked the invitation away and gone back to work, having decided he wouldn’t go.

Now he vaguely wished he had kept to that, he and Kitten would be tucked at home safe. Instead they were here, at this strange party, where the lines were seemingly starting to skew. He was leaning heavily against Elliot, his face pressed against the ruffles of Elliot’s shirt. His hand came up on instinct to fiddle with the buttons of Elliot’s jacket, the cool metal feeling odd against his warm hands, not wholly unpleasant either. How had he gotten here?

He had been on his way to work, the crisp morning air causing his lungs to ache slightly. Kitten had been walking along beside him, the soft clicking of her hooves on the cobble stone echoing off the stone walls. He wasn’t sure how Elliot had found him, probably because he took the same path to work and home every day. Or perhaps Elliot just magically knew where he was all day every day, it wouldn’t surprise him. The male seemed to be able to track him down even when he did deviate from his normal routine.

Elliot had found him and been quite clear in what he wanted, having not beat around the bush at all this time. Though Evan hadn’t wanted to go, had work, he found himself relenting to the more dominate personality of the other. He couldn’t count the times Elliot had had some bright idea and drug him along. Since they were younger and Evan had first come to Palisade, it had always been Elliot that had gotten them into trouble.

He had done the same this time, though it had been much without thought. It wasn’t like he could have possibly known that things were going to go so array at this gathering. He had been so excited too, dressing up as a pirate, he had tried so desperately to turn Evan into a sea wench, Evan on the other hand had flat out refused to be caught dead in a dress. One of the few times in the history of their friendship that Evan hadn’t given into the noble.

The trip to Old Castle hadn’t been bad, it had actually turned out really interesting. Evan hadn’t really ever ridden in a fancy carriage before, and the trip had been comfortable. Elliot had made fun of him of course, for being so interested in the carriage and the surrounding area but he hadn’t really cared. They had arrived in a timely manner; Elliot dressed as a pirate and Evan in something similar if a little more girly.

Evan shook his head, trying to dispel the memory of earlier in the night. It was a mistake of course, as he did so the world spun, and he watched in an odd sort of daze as his vision swam. He caught sight of Vaim out of the corner of his eye; the buck was bolting around with Kitten on his heels. The skeletal mask over her face causing the game to look like something much more horrifying; his breath hitched in his throat in a painful way as Kitten caught up to Vaim. He expected to see blood, Vaim torn to bits, but instead there was a playful head butt before Kitten was dashing off in the opposite direction.

He trembled slightly turning to press his face back into Elliot’s chest. The scent of honey and musk assailing his senses, this was a constant with Elliot. The male could always be counted on to smell of honey and musk and the scent was comforting now. He probably shouldn’t have had that wine, and after this he was sure he wouldn’t have anymore ever again.

“Elliot?” He questioned softly, he could hear cackling off in the distance and it made him worry. Evan found his hand winding in the scarf to play with it, something to ground him as the sense that he might just float off and be lost was starting to overwhelm him. He was hardly aware that he was clinging to the other, as if Elliot was his only safety.

Elliot had taken the day to prepare for the ball, all of his duties on hold until the sun rose again, as were his father’s instructions, and for once Elliot was not complaining. The suitors had been hard at work since the invitations had arrived to tailor the noble’s outfit, and the day of reckoning proved to be a success, as the face that so often held a sneer gave nothing but a smile. He looked like a damn fine pirate behind that mask, and while Evan had flat out refused to be his wench, he was stunning in his own attire, which Elliot had to, and did, begrudgingly admit.

He had hunted Evan down early that morning, and being the predictable little nurse that he was, it had proved to be anything but a challenge. The cold air had stung at his cheeks, turning them a lovely shade of pink, and Elliot had proven once again how useful his obsession, as Evan tended to call it, with scarves could be.

The two were ever bickering, so opposite from the other it was rather ridiculous. No one could understand where their friendship stemmed from, and even fewer could tell you how it stood so strong against the odds, or why it continued to grow and not diminish. Truth was, not even Elliot or Evan could explain it. Their friendship was similar to the relationship of a guardian and a chosen, a bond that was as unbreakable as it was irrational. There were times when Elliot felt the friendship was a bit one sided, like he needed Evan more than Evan ever needed him, and there was certainly some truth in it, but Evan never seemed to mind. It was never an issue, and that alone was a reason their friendship was so resilient, he was certain.

Elliot wasn’t quite sure when the dancing had turned to swaying, or when the chattering had shifted into laughter, but this ball was not going the way he had expected. He felt a soft weight on his chest, a finger fiddling with his button, and he took a moment to lean against the wall, his heart hammering in his chest as his vision swam. His name, he could hear the whisper so clear against all the other noise it was if it had been screamed into his ear. The whisper belonged to Evan, he knew, and he smiled softly. “Evan?” he answered, feeling a tug at his scarf. He looked down to gaze into those pools of green, the light catching in them to make them glint like the sun on a leaf. There was a slight slur to his voice, the same slur he would get if he drank too many glasses of wine, and he wrinkled his nose wondering if his drink had been spiked.

Vaim and Kitten flashed out of the corner of his eye, and he turned his head to rest his cheek on top of Evan’s head, the hair brushing his lips. He grinned as he watched the two dash about, and in his pleased stupor planted a sweet kiss on Evan’s hair. It didn’t register as anything unusual, even if it was incredibly out of character. He only showed affection to Evan behind closed doors, where peering eyes and ears couldn’t touch. It was safer that way, for both of them, but he gave Evan another, on the skin of his forehead this time, which seemed to boil with fever. He was sure it was from all the dancing they weren’t doing.

Evan blinked tilting his head back to look up at the other as he felt a kiss placed to his hair. It was odd, like rain on a sunny day, when there wasn’t a cloud in the sky; not a bad feeling but strange. Elliot had never been one to cuddle in public, not ever and it wasn’t something that bothered Evan. He blinked at the kisses, before leaning up to nuzzle against Elliot’s cheek. It was strange, this feeling, or lack thereof. He was sure… in a distant sort of way that he usually had more inhibitions than this… didn’t he? He shook his head slightly blinking owlishly up at the other before his head snapped to the side as someone screamed. It sent a shiver down his spine, and if he had had a tail it would have bottle brushed out in shock.

He peered through the throng of people looking for the creator of the scream but it was hopeless. He vaguely noticed some people he had seen before but that was it. He gave a slow rolling shrug before looking back up at Elliot. What was he waiting for? He couldn’t remember, why couldn’t he remember? Had he actually been waiting for something or was that just what his mind wanted him to believe. He wrinkled his nose before tucking it back into Elliot’s chest.

“We should dance.” He commented softly, his voice muffled against the other’s chest. They had hardly danced at all, it just made sense that they should dance now, it was a ball after all.

PostPosted: Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:19 pm

Elliot’s focus had been sucked away when their eyes met, and the skin of his cheek tingled pleasantly where Evan had nuzzled him. He couldn’t seem to break out of his daze long enough to respond, but the misplaced scream would have gone completely unnoticed by him had Evan not broken the frozen air between them. He blinked, looking up only briefly as the scream died off, leaving a resounding echo to bounce around the room. He swore there to be a flash of red, but it could have easily been a trick of the light. His senses were failing him all over the place tonight, or so it seemed.

He had pulled Evan a bit closer at some point, the subconscious need to protect him driving Elliot to wrap his arms around the smaller man and tuck him safely into his chest. Their eyes slipped back to each other, and Elliot ran a hand through silken locks as Evan nuzzled his face into his shirt and kept it there. It felt right, like nothing else mattered at the moment because the stars had aligned and everything was as it should be. He gave a delayed nod at the muffled, almost inaudible word ‘dance’ and moved them carefully onto the dance floor, the urge to sweep Evan up into his arms and carry him pressing, but his already sluggish, wary movements kept him from making that mistake.

The world spun, but in the stillest way it ever had. It was as if everyone in all the lands were frozen in place, but the earth and the clouds continued on with a quickened pace they had never possessed before that moment. Elliot kept his eyes focused on Evan, fearing that if he moved them from that spot on his head that the two of them may cease to exist. Even in their gentle, slight sway, he felt as if his feet may slip out from under him. They moved together in a sync that was meant only for the gods, and Elliot wondered what the rest of the night might hold, or if he would even make it through until morning.

His mind wandered lazily, like slow moving clouds on an otherwise clear day, and then the soft weight on his chest shifted into a weight that, while easily handled and familiar, still took him by surprise. He didn’t have to look down to know that Evan had collapsed, in his arms fortunately, and it took everything he had to keep from collapsing right there with him. He did, however, look down and swept the limp body into his arms completely, cradling him to his chest. The night was full of surprises, he noticed, and he wrinkled his nose in vague distaste. Elliot had never a day in his life been a fan of surprises.

Evan had been wrapped up in the feeling of swaying with Elliot when the world seemed to flip on him. It was a strange feeling to have up as down and down as up, not pleasant really. He had enjoyed the feeling of being pressed against the other however, had enjoyed having his cheek resting against that fine tailored shirt.

It was just as his eyes were starting to drift closed when Kitten crushed into his mind with a sudden bolt of emotion. He had almost forgotten about her for a moment, and the sudden rush of emotions caused his world to spin horribly. Before he could even begin to understand what she had sent him his knees went weak below him and he felt himself crumbling forward into Elliot.

A part of him was almost embarrassed as Elliot picked him up, cradling him to his chest. He gave a soft noise of both pain and comfort as he nuzzled the other’s shoulder. It wasn’t long before his doe came crashing through the people and to his side, her head held high and ears erect. She had an almost bewildered look on her features, not that it really registered with Evan. She was standing close, closer to Elliot than she normally stood, the wolf skull she was wearing causing her to seem like something from a nightmare.

Evan reached out carefully to run his fingers along her neck area in a comforting manner. She canted her head to the side, and nuzzled him slightly before her ears went back to flicking about.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Evan asked softly rubbing gentle circles. He only noted vaguely that Vaim came up much slower.

“Elliot what happened?” He asked softly, the air seeming to shift slightly, slowly becoming lighter.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:22 pm

Elliot leaned down to kiss Evan’s forehead for the second time that night, once again not noticing the significance of it all, and he brought a hand up to push the bangs out of his face. His fingers stilled, however, as he finally noticed Kitten, who had come barreling through the crowd and up to Evan, literally tossing two people to the side and out of her way so she would have a clear path. He blinked in shock at her sudden presence, and glanced behind her where Vaim stood, pawing at the floor where the dirt had become kicked up from all the dancers.

He could feel the weight of Vaim’s presence more than he could see him, and it seemed to be that which gave all the twisted air a new clarity. Elliot stared at the two guardians, attention focused not on the one in his arms, but on only them for the moment. They brought with them a sense of being grounded, he swore it, and the change of pace was welcomed. He had been growing tired of this warped, drunk existence.

Vaim came over to stand by his side, his antler gently bumping the hat which sat perched atop Elliot’s head. He sighed and ran a hand over Vaim’s fur, who then leaned down and bumped against Evan’s head with utmost care and caution. It was only then that Elliot’s attention slipped back to Evan.

“It appears you passed out, perhaps from exhaustion?” he answered with hesitance. They hadn’t seemed to have been dancing vigorously, and he couldn’t remember any comment Evan had made about needing rest, but then it didn’t appear that he had the very best memory tonight. He looked to Kitten and Vaim, as if they might hold the answers, before shaking his head. His voice had lost its slur for the most part and his head felt as though it had been reattached to its shoulders, if a bit off kilter. The air was no longer suffocating, and breathing easier gave him better control of his body, so he offered the otherwise obvious solution to collapsing in the middle of a crowd. “Let’s get you off the dance floor.”

Evan blinked, he had fainted? No that couldn’t be right, he had been awake the whole time… he was sure of it. He looked up at the other and shook his head. “No, I was awake. Kitten had just crushed me with her emotion.” He said softly before looking around the crowd.

“That wasn’t what I meant anyway.” He whispered softly squirming slightly, becoming restless as the air seemed to clear. He made a soft sound before there was sudden panic, it had started near him and as he turned to watch he could see it sweeping outward. Kitten lowered her head ears back, her hoof pawing the dirt annoyed.

Slowly the haze seemed to lift, and he was stuck, staring, unable to move. He could just watch in mute horror as Kitten sagged to the ground her head hanging low. The people seemed to have all stilled, staring endlessly at a… spirit?

There was blood rushing in his ears and he wasn’t sure what to do or say as he sat there in Elliot’s arms watching the scene unfold. He couldn’t understand what was going on, couldn’t move, and he felt like his chest was con-caving in.

All he could do was watch, just watch in abject horror, the scene before him.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:23 pm

“Oh.” Was the only response Elliot could muster, haze settling over his head just long enough to make him woozy before vanishing again. He had been so damn focused on Evan that the rest of the world seemed to lift away, but it wasn’t for long, not long at all. He took a step, a single step forward, before he was snapped back into the harsh reality.

Vaim dropped silently to the floor beside Kitten, his fur and hooves covered in the dirt he had been pawing at not moments before, and he did not move, nor did any others. He realized with horror a heartbeat later that this included himself.

Elliot blanched as he stared forward with the crowd, his mind seeming to blank, and then he was sure the color he had seen earlier was red.

Evan wasn’t one that resorted to panic often; as a matter of fact he was fairly level headed for the most part. However he was sure he was panicking now. As this twisted play unfolded, he watched and at the fatal conclusion he wasn’t sure what to feel. The panic was so overwhelming that all other emotions had ceased to exist, he gasped for air, sucking it in unaware he hadn’t been breathing. His body shuddered slightly against Elliot’s, as he watched their queen rise. While he had always been mindful of the nobility, he currently couldn’t find it in himself to do much more than tremble like a leaf.

Kitten had slowly pushed herself to her feet, her legs quivering slightly. Still she stood, and shook herself off, watching the dark haired lady as she spoke to the group. Her ears attentive though it was unclear if she fully understood what was being said; Evan lifted a hand to run along her head once more.

He watched, and listened from his current perch, and at the sight of the tree growing he wasn’t sure what to say or do. It was magic, and while he was aware such things existed in the world, it was still hard for him to believe and he had to blink his eyes a few times. Why had he given in and come to this ball? It had been such a terribly horrid idea.

Evan had never been one to struggle with his own morality, despite the fact he was a healer, and around death a lot. He had never really pondered his own demise, nor did he think it would matter much when he did. He was after all, still so young and seemed for the most part to have a decent life ahead of him. However he was very aware of it now. How frail his own body was, not only had several perished this night but now the queen had been so bold as to declare war.

While that was great and all, and they probably needed to go and meet these wolves or whatever head on, at the moment he was having a really hard time accepting his demise might be close at hand. He didn’t know how to fight, or shoot a bow, or wield a sword, or do anything really useful in the combat department at all. He would be easy prey on the field of battle, and he knew it. His demise seemed rather imminent at this point, why had Kitten chosen him? He wasn’t good for anything and now… now he was going to die still being good at nothing.

He was starting to hyperventilate and he really wished this ceremony would just end so they could leave. Then he could just go back to his old life, the one before he had wandered off into the woods and grabbed a random totem from a large tree. There were so many things he hadn’t done, he couldn’t go to war. He clutched at Elliot’s shirt, tears springing to his eyes.

“Can we go?” He whispered softly, his body starting to tremble softly. He could vaguely tell that the ceremony had come to a close and others were starting to drift off. He would really rather go curl up and hide somewhere. What was he going to do? There were so many things he hadn’t said… so many things he hadn’t done… he shook his head slowly. Tonight, he would say something to him tonight as soon as they got back to the room. He wouldn’t die without telling Elliot… he just couldn’t.

How had it ever come to this?
PostPosted: Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:25 pm

Elliot stood silently, Evan clutched in his arms, as blood pooled on the ground in front of them. It wasn’t something his mind was used to seeing, and it took a minute for the situation to sink in fully. He wasn’t like Evan who dealt with this sort of thing daily, all the blood and death in numbers that shook the records. It was unnerving for a noble who sat perched in his delicate manor all day with tea and silken robes. He had only ever seen blood in the infirmary, when he went to visit Evan and steal him away from his work. Never had he seen another die, and it picked away at his reality like a rabbit picked away at the earth.

He could feel Evan tremble against his body, his tiny chest shaking softly against his own, and with movement suddenly returned to him, he took the opportunity to support him more properly. Elliot watched in fascination as the spirit vanished and a tree took his place, and amusement bled into his eyes as he bared witness to all the nobility that had sworn against magic’s existence for so many years. At the word war however, the amusement fled and his eyes became filled with dread.

He had known, oh how he had known this day would come. There was change in the air, and change was rarely if ever for the better. It was the reason he abhorred surprises so, they were never a pleasant thing. He had been trained for this reason specifically, but never had he thought it would come to pass that he would need to use what he had learned. His throat caught, leaving a large lump to form, and it was then that he felt the p***k of tears against his chest. His heart gave a soft ache as Evan clung to him, and his arms tightened around the body that felt so much more fragile than it ever had before.

He wasn’t sure what would happen, if they could drive the wolves away or not. Their land could be lost, every last life snuffed out so the wolves could roam as they pleased. There would be many who would perish, but Evan wouldn’t be one, not if he had any say. He would protect Evan with his life if it came down to that, without hesitation. He silently sent a thanks out to his father for the strenuous, constant training that he so loathed day in and day out. It had been a blessing in disguise.

Resting a hand against Vaim, who had risen to stand beside Kitten once more, Elliot gave a gentle nod, his eyes flickering with emotions that were indistinguishable in the given light. “Of course.” He answered, his voice distant with thought. Elliot moved with ease between the others that had begun to disperse, and made his way over to the carriage that awaited them to take them to the inn. His father had reserved a room some time ago, and he would be taking quite a bit of advantage of that tonight.

He climbed in with his party of four, and they departed down the cobble stone drive to an inn that sat tucked away in the middle of town. He settled with Evan in his lap, Vaim by his side ever vigilant, and stroked his hair with tender fingers. His mind was unsettled, but he could feel the hesitance in Evan, in the way he breathed, in the way he squirmed, in the way his heart beat rapidly against Elliot’s chest. He knew that Evan needed something, some sort of assurance; the last thing Evan needed at this point was someone just as terrified as he was. He needed someone strong to tell him it would be okay, and Elliot promised himself not to show an ounce of uncertainty or fear until the war had been put to rest so he could keep Evan from going off the deep end. He would be strong, if only for Evan.

Evan couldn’t have been more thankful when Elliot agreed to leave. He just clung to the other, face pressed against his chest to try and hide the emotions that were currently flowing through him. He was so scared, so panicked, and it wasn’t something he had ever really had to deal with before. He wasn’t even sure how to sort through all this mess, and currently didn’t really want to. He figured avoiding it wouldn’t save him, but at this point he didn’t really care.

Kitten plodded along beside them as they made their way to the carriage. She could feel the waves of uncertainty, panic, and sweeping depression rolling off of Evan and it had her a bit worried, not that she would ever show such things. Her little tail wiggled slightly as they carriage door opened and she was careful as she moved into the large basket. She hated the way the floor moved under her hoof, but it had been better than running along beside the carriage the whole time.

She waited until Evan and Elliot had settled, before curling up at their feet. She nuzzled Evan’s ankle gently, worried for his mental state. She couldn’t fully understand what had brought all of this on but it scared her a bit. Not in the sense that she was scared for her life, but in the sense that she was worried for her chosen. She had always worried over him, and would always worry over him.

The ride through town was fairly silent, as each digested the news in their own way.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:27 pm

The carriage jostled around beneath their feet, and Elliot felt his stomach roll unpleasantly as they hit a stone that had been laid down a little more shallow than all the others. He gave a wrinkle of his nose and tucked Evan further into his chest, willing the sloshing to stop. His stance protective, he rubbed Evan’s back and let the notches of his spine slip between his fingers. He was too frail, too fragile, too easily broken to fight in any sort of brawl, let alone a war. He hung his head, letting his cheek rest against Evan’s hair once more, and wondered how long they had until everything went to hell.

Vaim watched Elliot, and eyes that usually sparkled with mischief held a heavier, much more daunting emotion this night. A cloud was looming over them, threatening to open up and drop a flood on their lands, and it wouldn’t seem to budge. With slow steps, Vaim took a seat beside Kitten, curling into himself with his antlers precariously leaning against the carriage wall. He could feel those waves of emotion in Elliot like he could feel the wind in his fur, and it left him with something of a sour taste in his mouth. Elliot was usually so at ease when Vaim was around, but the unrest in the air was nothing to be trifled with it seemed.

Laying his head on Elliot’s boot, Vaim glanced to Kitten briefly. She had always been a constant, as constant as Elliot and Evan since his totem had been plucked from that tree, and her presence was comforting, even if there was little to no discomfort within him. His nose brushed hers for a moment, a seemingly misplaced, but silent thanks, and then he was tucking it back down among his fur to rest until they reached the inn.

The carriage eventually slowed and the clip clopping of hooves became farther and farther apart before they died out completely. The door opened to allow the four out and to their room for the night, but Elliot had barely noticed. His mind was playing somewhere among the stars, however, the soft rustle in his lap was able to ground him once more. His body was stiff and ached in the joints as cold air swept in through the open door, and he could feel the soft tremble of Evan’s body become more violent. Slipping the scarf, which he had insisted on wearing with his pirate attire regardless, off of his neck, he wrapped it around Evan’s and picked the younger up as he walked down and out of the carriage, his boot giving a soft click as it hit the earth. Tipping his head in acknowledgement of the man who had dropped them off, Elliot moved with Evan, Vaim on his heels, to the room so they could catch a few hours of rest before the rest of the world caught up with them. What had been planned to be a day of relax was no longer fated to be, and Elliot shook his head once more, a sneer crawling back onto his face, as he thought of all the changes that would soon be upon them.

Evan had spent the better part of the trip fading in and out of panicked consciousness. All the sudden well of emotions had left him tired and yet restless. It wasn’t something he had really felt before, normally he was at peace with the world.

When the carriage rolled to a halt Evan shifted slightly, and went to lift his head but he soon ducked it back down as the cool night air brushed against his warm skin leaving a chill behind. He shivered slightly and was only vaguely aware of Elliot wrapping that silly scarf around him. He felt bad, and went to get down but it seemed to go unnoticed by Elliot, for soon he was being lifted again and carried to their room.

Evan dipped his head hiding his face in hopes that if he did that then perhaps people wouldn’t notice him. He fiddled with the end of the scarf, a sad smile finding its way onto his features. How often had he argued with Elliot about these things? The male always wore one, even when it wasn’t logical to do so, and it had been the butt of many of their quarrels.

Kitten had been a bit confused by the sudden nose nuzzle of Vaim but even that hadn’t been enough to break her concentration. As they reached the inn she was ever grateful to be rid of the carriage; she hopped out rather quickly to prance around on solid earth. She watched over her shoulder as Elliot dismounted with Evan and then fell into line beside them as they made their way to the room.

Evan waited till they had made it into their room, away from those that would watch them, before he burst into tears. While he knew that he had been safe the whole ride here, it was different now. He was alone, with just those he trusted and it was ok to fall to bits.

“Oh Elliot.” He mumbled softly squirming to get down. Once he was placed on the floor he looked up at the other, tears streaking down pale cheeks.

“I can’t do this.” He whispered, looking for the entire world like a kicked puppy. The moonlight drifted in to glisten in the tears, his hair having come loose at some point fell around his head in a disheveled array of white gold. The bright green of his natural eye color had faltered, falling to darker depths, though they glistened like polished emeralds due to the tears.

“I… I…” He stumbled over his words, cheeks flushing a fanciful shade of pink as he tried to explain everything he was feeling. His mind was buzzing, whirling and he couldn’t seem to grasp onto one thought and hold onto it for very long. How was he to explain to this man, that he feared death, that he had loved him for so very long, that he was scared, all these things with no words.

His eyes fluttered closed, too long lashes brushing the top of pink cheeks as a pained expression found its way onto his features. He hurt a great hurt that no doctors ever had the cure for; and was struggling greatly with his own morality at the moment. He needed it to just stop, his mind to hush for a moment, for some break, some peace, in this endless rushing tidal wave of emotion.

“I need you… your help.” He whispered out his eyes fluttering open to look at the other, a plea in those green depths. He had no idea what he needed, no idea what Elliot could even do to make these feelings better.

Elliot shivered softly in the cold night air, watching his breath lift into the stars as goose bumps ran across his arms. He held Evan close, willing the scarf to give him warmth before they were safely tucked into their room for the night, out of the biting chill and the risk of catching cold.

Not even a beat had passed between the door clicking shut and Evan dissolving into tears, and Elliot put him down without complaint, but didn’t let him go far. The moonlight was proving to haunt him it seemed, because even through all the despair that hung around them, even with the eternal sadness that seemed etched into Evan’s eyes, he could not stop the hitch in his breath at the downright stunning scene the world was playing before him. Evan had never looked so beautiful, Elliot was certain. The way the light caught in his hair and glinted in his eyes, turning them to pools of molten grass, had him stuck in place with a mind that was quickly forgetting how to breathe. His actions were not something he could remember, but a hand had snaked its way into that sea of silk and tugged him closer, their lips a breath apart and barely brushing.

The words “I’ll protect you” filled the air for only Evan to hear, and then he claimed his lips in a kiss so filled with emotion it was debilitating. He held Evan against his chest, held him close so he could feel the meaning of the words more than hear them. His breath had gone completely by now, and his face grew red with the need for air, but he did not pull away, not until Evan wished him to. It was by far the most bold, intrusive move he had ever made, but it came to him so naturally, so without thought in that one moment that it had to be right. He would not live with the regret of never kissing Evan, something he had wanted to do for so very many years, never making him his own and never telling him he loved him. This night would not be wasted with worry. This night would hold a significance greater than any death or war could even hope to, for tonight would be about them, and that is all that mattered to Elliot in this world.

Evan’s world stilled, everything coming to a stuttering halt.

His heart that had been hammering in his chest slowed it’s beating to a dull flutter, and the blood in his veins seemed to ice over and become sluggish. He was sure time stopped, and the world seemed to hold its breath as he did.

He had never felt something quite so pleasant before, Elliot’s lips were softer than he imagined them to be. His mind had hushed, and all that was left was just Elliot, and the feeling of him right there. The smell and the taste of the other on his lips, such a strange thing; oh he had known, for some time, that he cared deeply about the male. Had been able to pick out the signs of his affection, it had been a well kept secret one he refused to tell Elliot. He was sure the other just couldn’t feel the same and instead of messing up their friendship he had kept quiet. Now he wasn’t quite sure… what did this mean? He pushed the thought away, tomorrow; he would worry about it tomorrow. Right now he needed this, to just feel and have hope that Elliot understood how he felt.

His lungs burned with the need for air which had him pulling back slightly, just enough to give them room to breathe. His breath falling across the other’s lips and instead of time speeding back up it seemed to just continue on at this languid pace though his heart was quickly turning into this flutter beating. His hand found its way into Elliot’s shirt, tangling there as he leaned up to place another kiss to those too tempting parted lips.

“Thank you.” It was whispered, seemingly lost in the next breath as Evan made a bold move and pushed Elliot onto the bed. He was tired, his lids heavy, and he felt safe and calm, and best of all his mind had finally stilled in its endless panicking. He didn’t really give Elliot an option to leave as he curled up practically on the other male, his face tucked against his throat. He did manage to kick off his boots but that was it, Elliot’s father would have had a cow if he had known they were sleeping in their clothes… let alone together.

“I love you.” Was the last thing Evan thought, as his eyes fluttered closed, he hadn’t meant to say it aloud.
