It didn't matter where. Perhaps it rarely mattered why. Everything else was simply a matter of what happened, as the remnants of the shadowlings, if they could even be called so, finally slowly peeled away, crumbling into shards of black, fragments, ash-like wisps that began to slowly soar upwards, taking pieces of the area it tainted with it.
And then, in resonance, the sky, the clouds dipped unnaturally downwards, reaching out with black shadow-like claws to hungrily swallow the remains, the remains of the shadowlings, and as it did so, it revealed a moment of weakness.
It didn't matter where. Some saw simply darkness, just thick mounds of black mist curling up to converge before disappearing entirely. Others saw something else, as the skies parted for a second and revealed outlines, outlines of a place perhaps, and with the recognition of the shapes grew a slow terror, Fear, at its utmost base, Fear of the unknown.
It rarely mattered why, the force moving on its own as finally all the pieces collected together and with a soft flicker, literally curled into itself, all final signs of the shadowlings, of the struggle that happened gone, except for the wreckage that remained. Even the strange power, if it could be called so, had disappeared, leaving only exhaustion, pain perhaps, leaving only a wish to rest.
Rest indeed, with an unsteady heart.
