Nalani had been a bundle of nerves as the dawn had broken on the day she was to meet Izefiah again. She hoped very much that the stallion would keep her word - beyond wanting him to turn out to be the gentleman he had seemed to her, she would hate for her mother to have to witness her embarrassment if he wasn't there.
She trotted along, heading for the lake where she had last seen him, her heart pretty much in her throat the entire way. She turned occasionally to plead gently with her mother not to tarry as she didn't want to keep Izefiah waiting, and soon they were within sight of the body of water. Nivriti had been faintly bemused by the formal lengths her daughter tended to go to, but she knew it was only her way, and as this was the first time Nalani has asked such a thing of her mother, she knew that this stallion had to be something special - least her daughter thought so.
She hoped he was; she could not bring herself to approve of a relationship for any of her children that was anything less than full of the love and respect that Althalus and herself had for each other.
The older mare hastened at her daughter's request, trotting lightly along behind Nalani, stifling a smile at the nervous excitement she seemed to be full of.

Izefiah had gotten to the clearing rather early, worried and nervous that he would be late. That would make a poor impression and that was the last thing that he wanted to do. He waited by the water, tail swishing nervously. Would Nalani's mother like him? Would she be repulsed by his appearance? He hoped not. He just wanted her to like him and approve. He wanted to see Nalani more and he had a feeling that if her mother did not like him, the chances of seeing her again would be rather slim.
He spotted them coming and took a deep breath, plastering a wide smile on his face before he took a few steps forward to meet them. "Good morning!" he called cheerily, bowing his head deeply. "I trust your travels were well?"

Nalani's face broke into a relieved smile when she saw that Izefiah was indeed there, hiding the look swiftly in case he thought she had not had faith in him being there. Truthfully her heart had been full of hope, but she really had had no idea if would be there until that moment. For a moment she couldn't say anything, glad as she was, and simply gave a bow in return, straightening and giving him a little smile.
Nivriti looked from the stallion to her daughter before greeting him, also returning his bow with one of her own, but when she stood up again she spoke to him.
'And good morning to you young sir.' she said with a warm smile. Of course she had given him a quick look over, noting his unusual wings; as Nalani had said they were a great deal like a spider's web. But his appearance was nothing to her as long as Nalani liked him, and should anything progress that he treat her daughter as she deserved.
'An easy journey, though a hurried one, someone seemed worried we would be be late.' the older mare cast a sidelong look at her daughter who looked away, her nose going an even darker purple as she blushed at the teasing.

Izefiah let out a chuckle, looking over at Nalani and smiling. He noted the darkening of the colour on her muzzle and it only made his smile widen. Ever the gentleman though, he did not mention it.
"You needn't worry," he said reassuringly to Nalani, bobbing his head. "I would have waited patiently." Now was his turn to flush a bit, thankfully hidden well by his dark coat and mask.
"I'm glad that your journey was well," he said quickly, changing the subject. "I am very glad to meet you, Miss Nivriti. Nalani speaks very highly of you. I am honoured that you took time out of your day to come here." He had noticed her once over, but as she had decided not to comment on his appearance and was not staring, he decided not to let it bother him.

'I'm very glad to see you..' Nalani started to say and then stopped, realising she'd sounded over eager and modified her greeting, giving him a soft smile with sweet eyes and asking; 'And how are you this morning sir?'
Nalani took a moment before he answered to take a quick glance at her mother, to see if she could gauge what she thought of Izefiah. She couldn't see much, Niviriti wasn't giving much away beyond her usual friendly demeanour. 'I am pleased to meet you as well, and please, just Nivriti is fine. I think I'm a few years and too many children to be called 'Miss'.' she chuckled, still smiling, but she was looking at him shrewdly as well, searching for anything that gave off warning bells.
So far he seemed nothing more than a young, if slightly unusual looking gentleman, as her daughter had described. But she had to make sure.
'So, tell me about your family Izefiah. Are you from these parts?'

Izefiah's smile brightened when Nalani said that she was glad to see him. It pleased him more than he would admit if asked. "I am well," he said, his tail swishing happily. "And even all the better now that I am blessed with such lovely company." Was he laying it on too thick? he wondered a moment. He meant what he said, but would Nivriti think he was just being a ham?
He nodded when she told him to call her Nivriti. "Of course," he agreed. He shifted his weight a bit, nervous. He wanted to make a good impression. He wanted her to like him.
The moment she asked about his family though, his smile faltered and his nervousness increased. "Um, no. I'm not from around here," he said, trying to hide the uncomfortable tone in his voice and unfortunately not being very successful at it. "I am travelling for a bit and my travels led me here." He smiled, trying to cover for any misstep he may have taken. Would she notice he hadn't spoken of his family?

Nalani fair beamed at the compliments, in her delight in seeing him and relief that he had been here, and that the meeting was so far going well, she didn't really register his over enthused responses. Though if she did stop and pause, she would figure he was as nervous as she felt.
She looked between her mother and Izefiah, figuring for a while that she would let them carry the conversation, she wanted to allow her mother to see what she had begun to say without her input..and it would give Nalani time to work out exactly what that meant herself. 'Good.' Nivriti said, noticing the weight shift, wondering if that was nerves or something else. Well, more time together would tell. She was a very easy mare to get along with - until it came time for her to meet her daughter's mates. She wanted them to have the love and respect that she cherished and received from Althalus.
'Are you from far away?' she pressed, gently though, with a faint smile. 'Well, I hope you find it pleasant around here, we certainly do.' Nivriti had noticed he gave an answer without actually answering her question, and for now left it. She would either enquire further once he felt more comfortable, or let her daughter get it out of him as she figured he would probably answer her more truthfully.
'Shall we walk?'

Izefiah looked over at Nalani for reassurance, worried he was just messing things up. That was the last thing he wanted. He gave her a little smile before he turned his attention back to Nivriti. He knew this meeting was more about how he interacted with her than it was about Nalani. He just wished he had the ease of conversing with strangers that his sister had.
"Not too far. I walked here," he replied, though he wanted nothing more than to just drop that subject entirely. He didn't want her to know of his bigot father. Not yet. Not for as long as he could avoid it actually. He'd go forever without letting her meet Auster if he could.
His gaze went to Nalani again when her mother spoke of him finding it pleasant. "I most certainly do," he said, the corners of his lips quirking into a smile.
"A walk would be delightful. Please, lead the way."

Nalani caught Izefiah's look and gave him a quick encouraging smile. The fact that he was willing to do this, had agreed to the meeting and was trying his best was gently touching her heart, and raising him bit by bit in her estimation, but still she was quietly cautious. What if what was blossoming inside her was not reciprocated?
She would feel exceedingly foolish, and she could imagine it souring her on relationships for a good while - though she imagined Kodah would have no problem with that! She waited for her mother to start moving, and then slipped to Izefiah's side, blushing as she did so, and not looking at her mother. He was definately being evasive about something. Nivriti had spoken to Nalani before they met up with Izefiah about how long she would stick around for after meeting him as she had a feeling that although her daughter was quite proper about such things, she also wanted to spend more time getting to know him alone.
So for the short time she was with the young pair, she would find out what she could and then have a short and quiet word with her daughter before she took herself away.
Nivriti started walking, taking a slow stroll around the edge of the lake. She turned as she walked and addressed the stallion once more.
'Which of your parents did you get your unusual wings from?'

Izefiah was really pleased when Nalani fell in step beside him, and he gave her a beaming smile. If he were more forward he may have even brushed her with his nose or his tail, but as mannerly as he was, Izefiah would never do that. Not until he knew her much better, certainly.
He started a slow walk between the two mares, looking out over the lake. It really was beautiful here. He might even prefer it to home. It was similar, but Auster preferred darker and denser forests and they lived beside a river rather than a lake. The lake was certainly nicer to look at.
Nivriti asked him a question, and Izefiah swiveled his head to look at her. He decided that question was fairly safe to answer; he could leave out the part about his father despising his wings of course. "Ah, neither actually," he said, shaking his head a bit. "My mother is a flutter and my father an angeni, but neither of them have twig like wings or webbing. Father says it must have been a spell or a curse or something. Both of my sisters have rather unique traits as well. Different from mine, but certainly unique."

Nalani smiled back, giving him sweet eyes, the deep colouring on her face going even darker as she did so. She really did wish sometimes she were like some other mares, freer with her feelings, and not so proper, but then she wouldn't be herself if was like that.
Izefiah didn't seem to mind that she was proper, and she hoped he understood, and had patience enough to stick around as she tip-hoofed her way along the minefield that was romance! Nivriti pointedly placed herself a slightly further distance from Izefiah and her daughter, walking in step, but letting them walk as a couple plus one, rather than as a small crowd.
She paused at one point, looking across the water, the reeds thicker here, their presence startling a couple of waterfowl and she watched them wing away before she responded.
'A curse?' she echoed, that was an interesting choice of word. What kind of a father was it that said that to his son? After all, he was healthy and wasn't that all a parent should want from their foals - health and the hope that you raise them so that they grow up well.
'Well, I wouldn't go so far as to call them that. Unusual if neither parent has them, but then Nalani here looks like her grandmother more than she does either her mother or father.' she chuckled.
'Unique is a good way to look at it.' she said, supressing a snort at the idea of him being 'spelled' or 'cursed' that way. Some Soquili.. Nivriti smiled at Izefiah.
'Well..I'm glad you like it here.' she said, abruptly changing the subject. 'I hope that whenever one of my children blesses me grandchildren that they choose to raise them in this area. That being said, if one wanted to follow their heart away from here. I wouldn't stop that either.'
Nivriti opened her wings partway and then folded them again. 'Well..I think I shall take my leave.' she said, casting a quick look at Nalani. 'It was very good to meet you Izefiah, and I hope we shall be seeing more of you.' she nodded and then added;
'Might I have a quick word in private with my daughter? Then she'll be all yours.'

Izefiah saw the look she was giving him, and his own smile turned rather goofy. He couldn't believe that such a beautiful mare with such a sweet disposition would care even remotely for him. Neela had been the only one to show him kindness outside of his family as a colt, but to be fair, he had lived a rather sheltered life. It was only pure coincidence that he had met Neela in the first place. If Auster had had his way he surely never would have.
He noted that Nivriti had moved away from them slightly, and Iz was grateful for that. He paused when she did, casting another smile toward Nalani. A curse. He nodded, glancing back over at Nivriti. That is what his father called it. That was actually one of the less colourful things he had called it. He refrained from telling her that Auster had refused to believe they were his children at first. He couldn't possibly have a wingless child or one with tentacles or whiskers. Ironically, being flightless was the greatest blow to Auster's ego.
"Thank you," he said, relaxing a bit more as it became obvious that she didn't agree with his father's viewpoint. He couldn't help but think that yes there had been some sort of curse at play himself, but he'd long since given up caring.
"I do like it here," he murmured, looking out over the lake again. Nalani was here. It was peaceful and calm. And Auster was far away. He thought he could definitely stay here. He opened his mouth to say as much, but before he could Nivriti had spoken again and he nodded.
"Of course. Take your time. It was good to meet you too, Nivriti," he beamed, giving her a little bow and smile at Nalani before he stepped away and made his way down the lake's shore. He thought that had gone well. It had, hadn't it?

Nivriti watched as Izefiah walked away and she gave a little nod. Even if he was hiding something about his family, he was polite, and from all the looks he'd given Nalani, he was definately very taken with her.
She had a quick word with her daughter, wrapped her in a hug with her wings, and then went back over to Izefiah.
'I'm going to take my leave now. Look after my daughter..' she said, giving him a look loaded with meaning, before trotting away. When she had gone a few paces she looked back once and then took to the wing, sculling swiftly and skillfully into the air. Nalani stood for a moment after her mother left, the short and quiet words Nivriti had said making her pretty brow crease as she contemplated them. She couldn't imagine Izefiah concealing something that could cause her pain, but then she didn't know him really well yet...
Was he really hiding something about his family as her mother suspected? How could she broach the subject? She walked quietly over to him and looked up and into his eyes.
'Thank you. For meeting my mother and putting up with her questions. I think she likes you. Or approves..' her voice tailed off. Approves? That was a slip of the tongue, but she knew that Nivriti was aware of why Nalani had asked her to meet Izefiah.
'Uh well..it went well.'

Why was the lake's shore so different from the river bed? Izefiah traced his hoof through the wet sand, making circles and swirls. The creatures around where different too. There were still fish and bugs of course, but everything just seemed different. He watched as another waterfowl took off, a bit envious of the creature's ease of flight.
Hearing one of the mare's approach, Iz looked up and smiled when he saw it was Nivriti. "Thank you for coming to meet me," he said politely. "Your company was most lovely." He was a bit taken aback by her look, but he nodded anyway. "Of course. I would not let any harm come to her, I swear." Still standing by the lake, he watched as she took off into the air with just as much grace as the waterfowl had.
Casting aside his forlorn look, Iz turned back to Nalani and smiled, letting out a little laugh when she thanked him. "It was my pleasure. I was happy to meet her." His face grew a bit hot when she said Nivriti approved, but it made him happy as well. "I'm glad to hear that I made a good first impression."

'How could you not?' Nalani said, wishing once again she was bolder. Or could at least know if it was okay to make some sort of physical gesture of affection, something along the lines of that which she'd seen between her mother and her father.
He'd been so sweet, and polite. And although her mother had some reservations about what he hadn't revealed about his family, she was fast becoming very enamoured with Izefiah. She wanted to get to know all about him though, so she turned a little, her tail gently swishing.
'Did you want to walk again? I would like to know more..I mean.' she gave a little cough, hesitant to pry, but hoping for honesty.
'Why did your father say that your wings being as they are were the result of a curse?' she asked, tentative. It was surely a sensitive subject.
