"Damn it, Jawaad, get a ********' move on." he snapped at his sister, "Ya wanna freeze or what?" he cut at a bit of weedy roots that had started to take over the path.
VESHKI's path. Veshki had made this path, and now Veshki's siblings were clearing it out. <********' poetic.
Ruelash didn't mind hard work in the outdoors, and sure, he could appreciate the poetry, but Jawaad had come too.
Jawaad was supposed to be home, making warm soup and being ********' terrified of him.

Look at her with her bow. With THAT bow.
Did she think she could be Veshki?! She could never be as good as Veshki. Or Ma.

Ugh. He could respect her for trying, he supposed, but did she ******** have to come with him? Now he had to protect her and s**t.
He stopped and waited.

"Hurry it up!"
Seriously. How hard was it to move up a steepish rough trail?!

Jawaad was uncharacteristicly grumpy, and she didn't know why. She wondered if it was that she was spending so much time around Ruelash, or maybe it was the memories the memories the path they were clearing brought back. Jawaad pressed on, keeping her thoughts and emotions to herself.

Jawaad was having no issues with the terrain, it was actually really easy compaired to what she was used to, but restoring the path correctly was a bit of a hassle. She knew Rurlash was probably simply hacking and slashing at the weeds. Jawaad was uprooting the nasty weeds instead. Jawaad knew, or at least hoped, that by uprooting them they would take longer to grow back.

Jawaad threw back one of the large weeds at Ruelash. "Oops, sorry." Jawaad said sarcasticly. She hoped a weed to the face, missing, or any where else for that matter, would shut 'Lash. At least for a little while. She then continued to pull up the weeds in the path way.

Ruelash glared, the dirt from the weed's roots leaving streaks of brown on his face.
"Watch it!" He snarled.
Ugh. She was moving so slowly. She shouldn't be throwing dirt clods! She should be working on the trail!
It had been a mistake to let her come. He stomped on ahead, growling his annoyance, hacking at plants that were too close.

```
Maybe he had forgotten, but Veshki had taught him to do the same things that Jawaad was doing. Had taught them both actually. It had been some years ago, when they had been Blazing this trail.
Pull it out by the roots, or cut away all the green on it. Stomp heavily to tamp the ground...
````

Advice whos echo was lost on Ruelash's ears.
He cut away at the low, sturdy undergrowth, reaching a rock.
A marker rock.

"Hey. Ya remember this?" he said, grinning at it for a moment, clearing some of the lichen away.

Jawaad rolled her eyes at Ruelash's impatience, he clearly didn't remember their brother's lessons. "Lash, we need to make sure the plants are fully killed, or else-" She started, but stopped when she heard Ruelash's words. She then finished uprooting the plant she had already began to pull out of the ground and walked over to Ruelash and looked down at the little marker stone, a light smile appearing on her face and a memory popped into her head as she did so.

The three of them had been clearing the trail all day, and Jawaad watched as her brother placed a rock on the path everyonce in a while. "Brother, what do you put those rocks down on our path for?" She asked, curiously.
"So we can find our way back, and so we know about how much further we have to go back home." Veshki replied, a light smile on his face, he then patted Jawaad on the head "And when you're a big strong hunter you can find the path again after you've veered off to go hunting." He added. Ruelash then made his own addition to why they left marker rocks, but Jawaad couldn't remember what it was exactly except for it made Veshki laugh and was bad enough to make her chance him around with a stick.

Jawaad knew the memory was small and insignificant, but for some reason it held quite a bit of significance. "Yes, I remember..." She said, still staring at the rock.

Fully killed?
Choppin' them killed them just fine!

But the marker rock stilled his tongue for a moment.
He had once thought that marker rocks were spare rocks to throw at angry predators... or at people on the trail. Or had he just said that to look tougher, all that time ago?
He couldn't remember.
Also, he didn't remember being chased with a stick. As far as he was concerned, it hadn't happened, nope. Noooope.
(It had)
But now he knew his mistake. Marker rocks marked the trail. He'd been stupid to think otherwise...

Oh hell.

He missed Veshki.

"Here. Lets see if we can find more of them. I bet they're all covered up with s**t and leaves." he said, giving the rock one more brush before continuing on in slashy-hacky silence.
"You remember when Mama yelled at Veshki?" he said suddenly, looking around in front of them, "I remember her doin' it. I don't remember why..."
He just remembered being intrigued and surprised. He was the trouble kid... so what had Veshki done?

Jawaad took note of Ruelash's sudden behavior change, but didn't mention it. She figured he was probably getting emotional, he was very close to Veshki after all. Jawaad rolled her eyes at Ruelash's vulgur language. "I'm pretty sure people didn't take a crap on those rocks, except for maybe some animals." Jawaad said with a sigh before beginning to uproot plants again. She wasn't a big fan of cussing. At his question she paused a moment to think, faint memories coming back to light as she did.
Veshki had taken Jawaad and 'Lash out to clear the trail, simply because they had asked. "Jawaad, take your 'Lash into the kitchen and watch the food for me while your older brother and I have a little chat. OK?" Their mother asked Jswaad, who promptly nodded and dragged Ruelash into the kitchen, keeping a good tight grip on Ruelash's wrist so he couldn't wriggle away. Jawaad kept close watch over the food their mother was cooking, but couldn't help from listening in on their mother and brother's 'conversation' It was mostly Mama yelling at Veshki about taking them into dangerous situations. She felt bad for getting her older brother in trouble, but said nothing about it.
"She yelled at him 'cause he took us out to clear this trail. She thought it was dangerous." Jawaad said plainly, still feeling bad for not standing up for her brother even though it had happened all those years ago. She then returned to uprooting invaders in silence.

That was silly. Danger was how you grew. It was how you knew you were alive. Ruelash thought that it was a great idea to have gone trail clearing with Veshki. "What the 'ell was she thinking." he wondered out loud. He was actually sort of amazed. He'd always thought that Ma was reasonable and strong and generally amazing. But that didn't sound reasonable at all. Still, Jawaad had a better memory for silly irrelevant things than he did. Maybe she was right. Maybe Ma had had a slip of reason or something. It happened, 'specially when ya got angry. Well, when he got angry, anyway.
"We were with Veshki" it was almost an afterthought, "Wasn't like nothin' would happen to us." he muttered, surlily turning to the rest of the trail tearing at weeds, his good mood- such as it was- soured.
"Ya take things too literally." he commented after a silent while, squinting up the path.
He had to admit, at least Jawaad was being quiet and sort of tolerable. He'd been worried, if that was the right word for it, that she'd be absolutely useless and loud and stupid. But maybe Veshki had taught her well, too. If so, he was a bit jealous. Veshki was his brother, his.
Well whatever.
Where was the next marker stone...?

Jawaad rolled her eyes at Ruelash's replies, his logic frequently made no sense to her. Although, she was pretty sure he could probably say the same about her. "We were kids, I know you don't remember, but Mom was relatively protective. She was much more interested in our safety then growing us up to take risks believe it or not." Jawaad said with a slight sigh, then she went back to looking for the stone, another memory coming back to her as she did.
Jawaad and her mother were out picking up things for dinner. "Do you want to learn how to shoot a bow and hunt?" Her mother suddenly asked, it struck Jawaad as odd, since she had never mentioned anything about the subject of hunting or archery before. "Yes, very much so. I want to be able to help others." Young Jawaad replied, a sight blush on her face. Her mother simply nodded in apparent understanding and the two then returned to their gentle silence.
Jawaad continued to quietly search for the stone. "Here it is!" Jawaad yelled over to Ruelash when she found the next marker stone.

Ruelash didn't believe it. ********. He couldn't believe it. He tore out a clump of weeds and kicked it viciously off of the trail. No. Mother hadn't been like that at all. Jawaad had to be mistaken.

Ruelash stared at a rock twice as big as he was.
"Mama, why is it so big?" he had asked, glaring at it. It had no right to be so big.
"It is big, because you are small" She had said, picking him up as he struggled. No! He wanted to climb it! No! He was not small! He had grown a whole inch since the last time! He'd get big!
"I wanna climb the rock!" he whined unhappily.
"It's dangerous now. You'll fall and hurt your head. When you're bigger, maybe." He was bigger! He was bigger! He pouted at his mother...

He couldn't remember her face now, other than it was hers. She was big, tall, towering over all the other people or so he thought. She was better than all those other people.
"I don't believe you!" even though she remembered ma better, even though she was older, Ruelash didn't, couldn't, wouldn't believe what she said. "Ma was strong, so she raised us strong!" He didn't actually remember, and he pouted in silence until her call. He followed her to see the marker stone.

Ruelash was in trouble again, as if he cared. He was sitting alone in the elder's tent, listening to the old fart talk to Veshki. He couldn't make out the words, but of course they were talking about him. Sure, he'd kicked that other boy's pet. It had deserved it for being stupid and slobbery! And that boy had deserved the beating he had gotten for being stupid too. Ruelash was not smart, but he knew stupid and annoying when he saw it. They deserved it! They ******** deserved it!
And the elder was stupid too! Stupid stupid stupid stupid! He didn't like them. He wanted to beat them up too but they would probably get him first. That was why they were elder- they were stronger than everybody else.
Ruelash fumed. He hated them all. All of them. All the other kids, all the other villagers, everybody.
But Veshki. Maybe Jawaad.
He missed Ma. Ma kept the stupid whiny villagers away, and took him into the nice quiet places. But she was dead.
He tried to make out the words, but couldn't. Veshki was on his side, always on his side. Veshki made sense.
Allright, so Veshki wouldn't have kicked the cruddy little beast, but Veshki was standing up for him now. Ruelash was sure...

Hadn't been exactly what Veshki had been doing, but eh.
"Remember when Veshki took me on that trip?" he'd met some idiot council bigshot and his annoying stupid daughter who backed out of a good fight. Oh yeah. She was a halfbreed or something. Ruelash didn't care. "First time you weren't with us."
Jawaad had been with them all the time before, until that trip when she was left in the village with Veshki's wife. Ruelash thought that Veshki had done that because.... he was worthier, or something.

The truth was, Ruelash was trouble, and Veshki had been worried. The solitary trip was so that Veshki could see for himself just what his little brother was (or, perhaps, the monster he could very well be), and maybe how to fix it. He hadn't wanted Jawaad along because he was no longer sure what Ruelash was capable of, and he wanted to see Ruelash alone. It had nothing to do with Worthiness, just a multi-layered fear.

Jawaad thought for a moment, noting Ruelash's sudden changes in emotion. She knew she could call on Yamma, who had to be around some where, if he lashed out suddenly, but she knew Yamma could rip him to shreds. She really, really hoped it wouldn't come to that, but Ruelash was unpredictable. She thought about his question, at first not remembering it, then it hit her.

Jawaad had become increasingly worried about Ruelash, and it was easy for her to tell that Veshki was to. Jawaad tried her best to keep her head out, and became a bit more self sacrificial over time because of it. That was when her selflessness really began to pop out. She was constantly working, attempting her best to take any burden she could off of Veshki. She hunted early in the morning, doing the wash or any other house work that needed to be done, cooking meals, and staying up as late as she needed to in order to get other miscellaneous chores done. Jawaad got worn out extremely fast, but it seemed to help, so she did her best to keep up with it. For a while she could, but when Veshki told her about how he felt about Ruelash's recent acts, worry wore her done. It nearly scared her to death when she realized that Veshki was so worried about Ruelash that he didn't want her coming with, but, after some convincing she agreed.

Thinking back on it she realized how much she did, and how much she worried even though she had been so young at the time. She couldn't help herself from silently blaming Ruelash for causing the early demise of her child hood, before silently taking it back. For some reason she couldn't bring herself to blame Ruelash. She knew that if Veshki and their mother had been around more things would have turned out better for them. Instead of pouring her thoughts out to Ruelash or telling him the truth about what happened, she simply nodded and said "Yeah, I remember..."

Veshki and Jawaad needed have worried about that, at least. Lash wouldn't have hurt Jawaad. Not under any normal circumstances anyway. But there was no way for her or anybody else to have known that. Yamma was a very good precaution to take, even if Ruelash wasn't appreciative of the measure. Or of just how much he needed Jawaad around.

But Veshki had. On his trips with Ruelash, he always made sure to bring her a little something. His wife did not like Ruelash, and by extension Jawaad, and so kept out of their affairs. Veshki knew he couldn't change her, and didn't try.
When he started to have children of his own on the way, he knew he would have to start spending less time managing his brother and taking care of his sister. He also knew that he couldn't leave Ruelash alone and unattended. He still wasn't sure what the boy would do.
After one of his trips, he had a special present for Jawaad- a little Raptrix puppy, black as the night sky but with striking white markings.
"Jawaad, this is yours." he had said, "I trust you to name him, take care of him, and train him."
He had taken her aside. Ruelash had wanted a Raptrix too, but had been pacified with the offers of more excursions and, if Jawaad let him, caring for the puppy too.
"If you can handle training this wild raptrix..." he had lowered his voice, "Then you can handle Ruelash as well and we won't need to be as worried. Do you understand?"
He really believed in her, but he had also believed that he would be around to help her when she needed it.
But he had died.

If Ruelash only could comprehend what his siblings had done for and because of him. But he couldn't. He just didn't have that capability.
As far as he knew, Jawaad was just a person who was there. Her special quality was that she was his sister. Other than that, everything else was hidden beyond his sight.
"Did I ever tell ya 'bout that halfbreed?" he said, looking ahead, "She was a coward. Wouldn't fight me."
