Walking had a way of quieting the rambling thoughts. The monotony of placing one clawed foot in front of the other inevitably fell into a pattern which he could focus on. A sort of walking meditation. Most days he just walked on and on until he his stomach complained at the lack of food, but today it was the sound of a water fall which made him pause. It was near. Though he wasn't thirsty just yet it would be much easier to drink from a sure source now rather than look later. He changed his route, heading uphill and toward the sound.

Reaching the top his heart sank. He'd come to the edge of a cliff, the desired water out of reach below him.

The hippogryph mare swooped down out of the air, her wings folded in her dive, the feathers that made what her 'tail' streaming in the wind behind her. The water of the fall fell into the stream below, and that was where she dived, pulling up at the last moment, one clawed foot catching the water, her hind legs tucked up as she beat at the air to regain height.

Her muscles ached along her shoulders and back as she flew upwards, but the freefall dive had been worth the exertion and it was with a faintly triumphant look on her face that she crested the cliff, catching sight of someone standing there as she flew past.

Goldfish turned on the wing, eyeing the patterned one and slowly descended, coming to land some yards from the one she had spotted.

The bright yellow figure caught his attention and he watched it as it rose and circled back to land nearby. A mare? He tilted his head to one side as he backed away from the edge of the cliff.

Well, she seemed harmless enough. If she was looking for a fight it was more likely she'd have stayed airborne and kept her advantage. He moved toward her, head lowered in a gesture he hoped would come across as equally harmless. These first moments were often the hardest. It was surprisingly difficult to convey that he couldn't' speak. Few realized immediately that he wasn't intentionally being rude.

Perhaps, if she was patient, he'd be able to convey that he was looking for a good hunting ground.

(( Feel free to make up a nickname for him. There's no good way to tell other character what his name is so he's going to learn to respond to as many nicknames as he has too. ;p ))

It was the first time Goldfish had seen a stallion outside of the Flock, and so she took her time to give him a thorough once over, taking in all the details of how he looked.

He was markedly different to her; four clawed feet, his muzzle was rounded and his tail was a little bob looking thing. She noted the gold glinting on his legs, and then finally gave a little smile.

'Hello.' she said, her voice was bright as she greeted him, hopeful that she was that this meeting would end in her being able to cement her position fully in the Flock. Not that she had felt unwelcome, but she knew that capturing males was something that was 'done'.

He bobbed his still lowered head as he approached, hoping that his smile would show her he meant well. When he grew close he plucked a flower from the ground, placing it at her feet as a greeting.

The action felt a little absurd, and more than one mare had taken it as an awkward way to flirt. Still, in all his time traveling he hadn't found a better way to say hello. Standing there staring in silence was certainly far worse an approach.

Goldfish expected a hello in return; well that was how it usually went wasn't it? But she didn't get cross, as it wasn't in her nature, instead she just looked slightly puzzled as he instead smiled and dropped a pretty flower in front of her.

'I prefer fish.' she said in an offhand manner.
'But thanks I guess.'

Her forehead wrinkled as she regarded the adorned male, wondering why he hadn't returned the greeting in a verbal way. Maybe he was shy?

'My name is Goldfish.' she said, giving him an encouraging smile.
'You have a name you want to tell me?'

He straightened up. Fish? Well fish would be just as good as any other game, if she could lead him to a pool there was little doubt he'd be able to drag something up out of the depths.

When she asked about his name he let out a voiceless sigh, more of a heavy breath, then shook his head. He'd never figured out how to mime out his name and he wasn't really in the mood to try it out now. Instead, he gestured to a grass-less patch near the edge of the cliff, trying to draw her attention toward the ground.

Reasonably sure he had her attention he started scratching in the dirt with his claws. A few moments later he'd produced a rough, childish drawing which with some imagination could be interpreted as a fish.

Grinning, he looked back at her.

Goldfish was confused by the reaction to her question after his name, pondering for a while until he caught her attention, a tiny seed of suspicion as to what might be the problem had sprouted in her mind. She would see what he wanted to show her first.

She watched as he scratched at the ground, and after tilting her head back and forth, and squinting a bit, she worked out that it was a crude depiction of a fish.

'Yes, Goldfish, or Fish for short. That's me. What are you trying to tell me?' she said, letting out a slight noise of frustration, thought it was mostly at herself.

'Okay, let me work this out. You didn't say hello in return, and when I asked your name, you seemed frustrated? And then you made this picture..' she tapped the ground with a claw as she spoke mostly to herself, and then looked at the stallion.

'Right...can you talk?' she asked, waiting to see the answer. If he couldn't that would explain alot, and if he could but was just playing around..well he might get clawed a little.

Oh, right. It was her name too. Bit of an important detail for him to have overlooked. He nodded then started brushing the spot clean. If there was any chance of communicating with her he'd have to try again. A bunny this time. Just as he pressed his claw to the dirt she spoke again. He left the ground blank as he turned back toward her, shaking his head back and forth enthusiastically.

She'd gotten it! That was it! The rabbit drawing could wait a moment. Now that she understood his predicament maybe, by some miracle, he'd be able to communicate his name.

An ear titled to the side as he came to a halt. Looking away he raised his lip ever so slightly, fangs showing for a brief moment, as he tried to come up with a place to start. Men... mmmm... What could he even compare it too?

Well, that explained that then. It did mean that communicating was going to be problematic, though if they were both patient in their attempts, not impossible. Besides, he was too interesting looking for her to just give up over such an obstacle.

'Okay, so you can't talk.' she said out loud, mostly to herself, though she gave the stallion a quick smile.

'I guess you can't draw out your name can you? I mean I could guess letters or something.' Goldfish fell silent. It was a knotty problem, but she would like to know it, it was his name and she would feel slightly rude just calling him any sort of nickname unless she really had no other choice.

Though, she had been mentally calling him 'Spangly' because of his jewellery before she knew he couldn't give his name .

His head sunk and he let out a voiceless sigh. Meh was the first sound he would have to communicate. If only his name had started with Meen, then at least he'd have a fairly obvious place to start. Perhaps it was about time he started going by another name. Something like fish would be simple enough to get people to guess. Too bad the name was already taken. Maybe something commonly found? He looked around at the surrounding area. Grass? Rock? Tree? It would have to be simple. Oak or Cedar sounded better but they would be harder to find.

His attention was drawn to the jewelry on his feet. The green gems were something he would never willingly part with. But still, what would he call himself?

'I really don't want to call you 'hey you'..that's not nice.' Goldfish mused outloud, mostly to herself. She thought it must be difficult to live in the world without being able to speak, and she hadn't really thought before how much she relied on verbal communication.

She noticed his attention wasn't completely on her and nodded at his jewellery.
'That's pretty stuff.' she chuckled, and then confessed as to the nickname she had mentally bestowed on him.

'I thought you looked 'spangly' so that's what I've been thinking of you as.' she said. Well, it wasn't as if he could shout at her over it!

He snickered silently at the hey you, and proudly jingled the decoration on his back leg when she brought it up. As she got around to the nickname she’d come up with though, his smile faded and he turned to scowl at her. Really, of all the possible proud and majestic names out there she could have pulled from she’d gone with Sprangly. There was no way. He stomped a clawed foot on the ground in attempt to show his displeasure. Really it served to make gold and jade jewelery bounce about even more than they had been doing to begin with.

'Scowl and stomp at me all you want!' she retorted when the stallion responded in a way that spoke of his displeasure, her temper flaring, but it didn't last long.

'Besides..I didn't actually call you that. Jingle jangle..see, I could call you much worse.' Goldfish said, her intial flash of anger fading as quickly as it had arrived.

'Look. I get it, it must be frustrating not being able to do as I am able, as most are able to, to speak as and when you please, to not tell others your name so that they can address you as you'd want them to.' she said, letting out a little sigh.

'But it's frustrating for others as well. I mean, I could rattle off every name I could think of and still not hit yours. So. It's a bad nickname.' she tapped her left foreclaw forwards.

'Or 'hey you'.'
She tapped her right foreclaw forwards. Either way, he could point to or tap whichever claw he preferred, though she knew it wasn't much of a choice.
