sadie the regency dressmaker goooooo
name: Sarah Beake (she prefers Sadie)
age: 20
appearance: Awkwardly tall, full-figured, and rather exuberant, Sarah tends to try to keep her wardrobe up to date with bright handmade accessories that can easily be paired with drab brown and green dresses for new looks every time. She has choppy, fraying blond hair that she tends to braid to keep out of her way, wide grey eyes, and an especially prominent nose.
personality: Sadie's an optimistic girl, and tends toward obnoxious cheer in all situations. She runs on empathy rather than logic or cost-benefit analysis; she's quite easily convinced to give coins to beggars and she's easily taken in by a well-spun tale. Despite this she's sharp-witted and resourceful, largely because her parents were moneyed but not so moneyed that she could have kept up with the fashions she loves so much. She always ensures that she's caught up with the latest in fashionable silhouettes and trendy accessories but she's actually fonder of designing her own - she's a passionate, artistic woman at heart; it's only the unfortunate timing and status of her birth that forces her skill toward fashion especially. Perhaps she'd have done better to be born in a few centuries' time...
Strangely, she enjoys reading - not fiction, but nonfiction; generally essays by women or those that talk (in whispers) of respect and a Parliamentary voice for ladies. It's all so intriguing!
history: She has lived in Oldcastle all her life. With her parents' blessing, she has started a dressmaking shop - but their funding will probably run out should she not find a husband rather soon. Nevertheless, Sadie is not particularly inclined to do so - she's never found boys interesting, see (she's never found girls interesting, either). She's confident that it'll all work out in the end, though; perhaps the ladies she creates dresses for know men of a similar temperament?
She currently keeps two assistants in employ - her best friend Constance (who mostly does work with the patterns and on the economic side, and, yes, a little seamstressing, too) and a little seamstress girl. It's not a particularly profitable venture, but the recent ball for Chosen helped a little.
Constance could perhaps be called the platonic love of her life (although her Piero may be edging in on some of that affection these days) - they met as children, and have been fast friends ever since. Constance actually came from a mercantile background, which may explain her ease with price controls in the shop, but she was quick to turn away from inheriting the family business and is ever so pleased to have the excuse of working with Sadie instead. Sadie's glad she's there.
