I am giving basic German lessons. If you want any, please sign up. You will have homework (easy and can usually be done in 2-3 minutes) and the occasional project/quiz that can earn you gold, items, and more.

Name:
Why you want to learn:
Do you know any German?:

Name: Ed
Why you want to learn: Heil der fuhrer! Kidding haha but this is actually a language that I have some interest in and started to self study, so it would be great to have some form of proper tutoring.
Do you know any German?: No not really, not in person at least, I have met a few in online games and such but no one i can actually speak to.

I will begin making your lessons. I'll be on spring break this week, but I will try to be online some. If not, your lessons will start in 7 days. We will start with the alphabet and how to pronounce the letters, how to write numbers out in words, greetings/goodbyes and basic vocabulary (colors, parts of a room).

Lessons will be available in another thread I will create on Monday. I haven't had much time to be online this break, but I will have nothing but time for the rest of this month. Happy St. Patty's Day!

Notes

Though it is similar to ours, there are differences in pronunciation and some special characters. Note: whenever you see "same" under pronunciation, you would pronounce the letter as you would in the English alphabet. These are the basic pronunciations. Pronunciation of a letter or letter grouping may change depending on the letters preceding and succeeding.

Please note that E does not always come before I, but in most cases it does. When in doubt, use this. Germans favor K over C for hard sounds (as in Cat, Crew, and Can), saving the C for soft sounds in letter groups*.

*See the Special Characters and Groupings chart for more on C.

Special characters and groupings.

Please note that Ch, depending on the region or Germanic country, will sometimes be pronounced as a hard K (as given above in the chart). When it is at the end of a word, some pronounce Ch as K, some as a soft Shh. Neither is wrong, but most use a soft sound for Ch when it is at the end of a word.

So, use K for Ch when it is not at the end of a word, and Shh for Ch when it is at the end of the word. Example: Dich would be said as Dish.

The above is a nice rule of thumb and works most of the time, but there are a few certain words in the German language that must be pronounced with either a K or Shh and cannot be altered. When in doubt, refer to the rule above.

For a test, I will give each of you a set of words, and you will write out each syllable in the way that it would be pronounced. Example: Katze, cats-uh; Vater, vah-ter.

Please quote me and post when you are ready for this "test".
