Erebus was not good at this.
Not good at all.
Actually, surprisingly enough, making the cards hadn't been much of a problem. While Erebus was terrible at baking and cooking in general; it was pretty much impossible to not burn something, making and cutting out stuff for Scarentine cards were pretty easy. As long as it wasn’t too overly complicated, of course. It was really just hearts and letters and stuff like that.
...He did try to make things more fancy but trying to cut fancy lace patterns to outline the hearts hadn’t worked. It had merely looked like a mess. Lady could only stare at him disapprovingly from her perch atop his bookcase.
In the end, what he settled on was a huge heart on the cover of the card, along with cut out letters of the recipient's name pasted on the heart itself. Within the card was the greeting he had written; “Happy Scarentines Day! from Erebus” And on the page on the other side of this greeting was a little personal note to the recipient.
He didn’t have many cards to make, actually. It was just Thack, Remi (because he had helped save Thackery from the Voice), and Tomoko.
(Ash wasn’t included because Erebus was pretty damned sure that it was taboo to give your brother’s boilfriend Scarentine cards. Probably also because Ash was still in the grey area, in his opinion.)
The first two had been easy to write. To Thack, it had been an apology and telling him that no matter what, he’d still love his bro and be around more often. To Remi, it had been an appreciative thank you letter.
But then Tomoko’s card lay open on his desk and Erebus could only stare at it.
What should he write?
Ever since that whole incident, Erebus had felt extremely awkward after recalling the events that had occurred. Starting specifically when he had offered his hand to her, and they had pretty much held each others hand throughout the journey ever since.
It probably wasn’t very much to others, but Erebus was somehow horrified at how bold he had been. In his opinion, handholding was something serious, wasn’t it? Especially between a boil and a ghoul. He had been so bothered by this that he said argh to his books, argh to his ceiling, argh to the floor, and even argh to Lady who had simply just given him an unimpressed stare.
It also didn’t help that he remembered that they had also hugged.
His cheeks had burned then and he said muffled arghs multiple times into his pillow.
He should probably apologize to Tomoko, right?
He brought out his notebook, and tried to write a draft.
“Dear Tomoko,
I’m sorry that I held your hand--”
Wait, no, that sounded weird, didn’t it? It definitely sounded weird. It made him sound as though he hadn’t wanted to hold her hand, but oh Jack, it wasn’t as though he was absolutely eager to hold her hand either, it was just that he really shouldn’t have been so audacious...
He ripped that page out of his notebook, crumpled it up into a ball, and threw it over his shoulder.
“Dear Tomoko,
I hope you don’t hate me for--”
Wait, that was entirely too presumptuous, wasn’t it? Yet another page was ripped out.
“Dear Tomoko,
How have you been?”
Okay no wait, now he sounded ridiculous. Shouldn’t he get to the point? It was a letter of sorts, after all. If he started off like this, he was going to end up with an overly long letter that he probably couldn't fit into the card.
“Dear Tomoko--”
Should he start it out with dear? It sounded overly affectionate. And he was trying to apologize for being-- no wait no that hadn't been really affectionate unless you counted him hugging Tomoko after remembering--
Which really how, why had he--
He crumpled up the page yet again.
"Hi Tomo--"
No, that sounded weird too! It wasn't as though they had bumped into each other and were saying hello in person.
"Hey Tomoko--"
Marginally better than writing hi, but no, wait, his handwriting looked a bit weird-- He ran his hand through his hair in frustration and started on a fresh new page.
In the midst of his daunting task, Erebus could have sworn he heard the many paper balls behind him being batted around, but when he turned, Lady was washing herself primly instead. He would have tried to catch her in the act if it hadn't been for his determination to get this right.
He had to.

I know I haven’t been around really often since we entered Amityville. A lot of things have changed since then (I mean, like, you have a boilfriend now) and I feel really guilty for not having been by your side. When you went into that coma, I was really really worried. I mean, I had resolved to do better in school and be around more often, and then this happened to you. And well, I’m really glad that you’re alright now, bro. I was really scared I would lose you, but well... I promise I’ll be there from now on. Happy Scarentines Day!
