I know there's got to be some car people around here intermixed among us misfits, but somehow the topic's never been brought up. Sooo, for those who are more mechanically inclined, voila! A thread!
For my part, I'm just starting to get into cars now that I've got more time. My current project is a 1997 VW Passat TDi 1.9, diesel, automatic, with ~176,000 miles on it. I picked it up for 700 quid from some expatriate Poles, and it's had 9 previous owners, and it's been pretty badly treated. So, looking forward to talking to some other car people about it around here!

We own a 2009 BMW X5, nice and comfortable with enough room for all our equipment and roof racks for our bikes or surf boards. Sometimes I think its a bit too posh though! sweatdrop

Sometimes I think its a bit too posh though! sweatdrop I've never personally had enough capital to consider getting anything that new. ^^; I like older used cars anyway. This one was clearly not treated well, we've done a whole list of little things to it since we've gotten it, including but not limited to: -Replacing a headlight -Changing the (pitch-black) oil -Running an oil/engine flush and an oil additive -Using two doses of fuel additive -Topping off the tire pressure (All four tires are different brands, and were at 16-22 PSI, from a recommended 35-46) So far it's netted great results, brought the mileage up from 30 MPG to 44 MPG. Next I need to find out why two windows aren't working and top off the coolant, which is well below the MIN line.

It's probably saved us as much in gas already as we've put into it.

1989 Ford F-150 Extend-cab short-bed, it's Ford Blue with close to 200,000 miles at the least. Driven this truck from the Rockie Mountains to Florida, at least 2 different Provinces in Canada all over New England to Texas and back. It has a straight-sixunder the hood that I've never had to touch. I have had to redo the electrical system an transmission multiple times though. I'm getting ready to replace the bench-style front seat with a pair of bucket seats I have had re-done.

Used to drive a Pug and a Mini, now we drive a pair of boring old cars, one for Toronto, one for LA. Would've gone with a Porsche but those arent exactly family cars, plus that second apartment doesnt pay for itself. xp

I usually drive a '94 Caravan (3L Mistubishi V6) with over 230,000 miles on it, but it's sidelined due to electrical problems, and I'm driving my grandma and grandpa's '96 Cutlas Sierra (3.1 L GM V6).
Never want to own a car made after 2000 (too much electronic crap that can go wrong).

I drive a '92 Chrysler LeBaron with 164k miles on it. I am currently waging a slow declining battle against it, and fear that this might finally be the year that it retires to the scrap yard in the sky. Of course, I have said that every year since I started driving it. It's current issue is that the transmission really, really does not like fourth gear. I have to creep up on it at as low of an acceleration rate as possible to make it shift smoothly. Otherwise, it misses and kicks into "safe mode," which means that my car goes into second gear and will not shift above it until I shut down and restart.
