Night time was probably one of Amphi's favorite times. The lake was eeriely quiet, and in her natural form, she laid lazily on the water looking at the stars overhead. Though she wasn't the brightest crayon in the box, when it came to water and stars, she was the expert.
She could make out the same constellations that haunted the human world. Capricorn, Pisces, Scorpio. Orion's belt. The dippers. North star. Sometimes, if she looked carefully, she could form the larger constellations and wonder about her kindred sisters that would do the same.
It was much different then sleeping in Roch's closed room, or her own contained aquarium room.
The moon was bright but not enough to illumniate the large lake, which didn't worry the mermaid all that much. No one came out as late as she did, and no one came to the middle of the lake because...well it was a large body of water.
Only a mermaid or a person who loved water as much as she did would find comfort in the laps of silence and small rocks of waves tonight.

That day was the first day in a long time where Mac strayed further than he normally did, taking his little boat out into more open waters instead of the little rivers he tended to stay on. The itch to get away had been strong for that day, and the beginning he had simply spent rowing, and as the pumpkin sun set he took to laying down to stare up at the stars, his arms folded behind his head. The stars came out and he gazed up at them, letting his mind go blank in favour of just enjoying the soft lap of water against the boat.
His calm was broken as his drifting vessel lurched suddenly, hitting something - more like bumping something, really - but it was enough to make him sit up quickly, his weapon immediately summoned. "Sonuvabitch!" He cursed loudly, miffed that his quiet had been broken by...something. It was too dark to tell what he had drifted into; it could have been a rock but it could have also been a lake beast. Either way, he had to get out.
Now.
Without thinking he pressed his oar into the water, trying to either push away from whatever he had hit, or to simply just row his way away from it.

Amphi hadn't even felt the disturbance in the water, engrossed in her relaxing study of the stars. And then it was gliding over her and pushing her under the water. It came as a shock at first, but as a mermaid, she was quick to swim down and under to the point where she could break the surface on the other side.
Except on the other side she was assualted by some sort of oar thing.
"OUCH!" The mermaid all but squeaked out in pain as she looked up. At the moment, it looked like a tall, manly figure shadowed by the light so she couldn't make his form for sure.
On a boat. Of course a boat. Explained how she got ran over. But not why he was hitting her with oars.
"Some people would have more courtesy then to smack a perfectly innocent mermaid in the middle of the lake...." all the words sounded perfect...except her tone was more nervous and she was holding her hands over the spot where she had been hit and her expression was much like:

His oar hit something mostly solid, which had been enough to make him pause at first, even moreso than the little yelp he heard immediately follow it.
...The water never said OUCH before...
Mac paused and pulled the oar out of the water a split second later to instead hold defensively. For all he knew it could be an unfriendly that was vocal, so naturally he didn't dismiss the weapon entirely. His dark eyes searched the water for the source of the voice, but wth the lack of light it was hard to focus, never mind distinguishing what was a shape and what was just the waves. The voice continued in a nervously innocent tone, one he recognized, but couldn't quite place where he had heard it before.
"If I had known there was a mermaid, I might've reconsidered." He informed the voice, his own an edge. It wasn't his fault she couldn't get out of the way in time! "Maybe you should've paid more attention to your surroundings." He huffed next, generally never taking well to being put on the spot for something that was out of his control.

Was the figure upset at her? Well to be honest, it was dark and it was hard to see and it didn't help that Amphi was only a little mad that she got hurt. The pain was some kind of dull throb in her temple instead. She swam closer to the edge of the boat.
"Well I'm sorry." The mermaid hesitated, "I didn't know there was going to be someone at this hour in the water, otherwise I would've gladly shared the-" As she hoisted herself on the edge, making sure to kick her fin so she didn't tip his boat more then a little, she stared for a moment at the figure.
He didn't have the same wild mess of curls, and looked...much more filled out? manlier? She didn't know how to really think of it because it had been awhile.
"M...Mac?" yeah it had been awhile, and the last time they had been together well...Her face blew up in redness as she fumbled at the edge of the boat, "Oh jack I'm so sorry, Oh Jack...."

Mac's face remained a calculated calm, but on the inside he was confused. So this ghoul knew him as well? Her name and whatnot was on the very tip of his tongue, just out of his reach...but for some reason, it wasn't a bad feeling that came with seeing her. He didn't have a sense of impending doom, but he did have an inkling that he should feel guilty about this one, which was odd since he rarely felt guilt over anything.
"...Err, yeah. Hey, hey, it's okay, no harm done, I'm the one that hit you, remember?" How could she forget an oar to the head? Well, that was him assuming he hit her in the head, but...eh. "Are you okay? You can come up here if you want." He offered, still trying to place her but still listening to his gut and playing nice, just in case. The boat was a small one, really only meant for two people, but he had enough experience with it to know how to shift his weight to not capsize them both.

Amphi fumbled at the edge for a little bit, kicking her fin under the water a little more with effort to keep her up. She didn't see recognition click in his mind and pursued her lips, it really had been a long time since the two had seen each other and since then well...Amphi had made sure to keep in touch with Lizzy but Mac had been hard to find.
"Oh well...I got a hard head?" She tapped her skull and winced, oops still a little sore. Instead she waited and then, "Um do you remember me? I'm Amphi...uh we...were...uh..." Her face exploded in redness as she tried to think of a good way to explain. "Involved when you were fighting with Lizzy?" Involved as in probably like a week of awkward dating thing that had only earned the reaper a kiss and Amphi a lesson on boils.
And how kissing was SPECIAL.
"Oh I'd come up if I could! But My tail makes it hard and I don't want to tip your boat anymore then it is....Well actually I could try..." She braced herself on the edge of the boat and gave a big push with her tail. She kind of slid into the boat, and moved as smoothly as she could for a mermaid to right herself. Her tail was tucked underneath her waist, much like when you tuck your legs underneath and she was fussing with her long wet hair, moving it to the side as much as she could. "Although I don't remember if you ever saw my mermaid form when we were together....How have you been??" She started to fan her tail a little, waiting for the water to dry off so her legs would reappear again. Although she'd be in her bikini, she didn't think it would bother anyone.

"Of course I remember you." Mac lied, though the next bit was more than helpful; with the name in the open the rest of the information clicked into place, and the Reaper gave a small smile and shook his head. "How could I forget? I'm sorry about that, by the way." He apologized again, though he didn't specify for what; he could be sorry for being involved with her just as easily as he could be sorry for hitting her.
The best kind of work was no work at all, and he thoroughly enjoyed not having to convince her to get into the boat with him; she'd done it on her own. He did mean back as she moved though, putting enough temporary weight on the opposite end of the boat to avoid capsizing as she boarded. "Mmm...can't say I remember actually seeing your tail." Though a part of him had wanted a piece of it at the time. "But I knew you were a mermaid. Any good Ferryman knows when a Mermaid's around." He chuckled a bit, shaking his head again. She started fussing, and Mac stared for a moment or two longer before remembering where he was and who he was with, which was enough to make him turn and dig through a bag, eventually pulling out a towel to offer it to her.
"Here, if you want." It was an off-handed offer, not particularly caring either way if she wanted it. "I've been fine, no real big complaints, I guess. I mean, aside from calling it quits with Lizzy a few Octobers ago. You?"

With the towel handed to her, she offered him a grateful thank you and started to wipe it down. Her tail started to shimmer and then dissipate, leaving smooth milky legs only spotted with scales on her thighs. The rest of her body seemingly disappeared and was replaced by its normal humanoid form. Meaning Amphi was sitting in the boat with Mac in her cute white bikini and not much else.
Instead of being shy about it though, the mermaid seemed at easy in the vessel and smiled at Mac, leaning back. "Well now you have!" She cocked her head to the side a little and frowned. "Sorry for hitting me and being involved with me? I'll say forgiven to the first and maybe to the second..." She was teasing of course and nodded. "right! Any man of the water would know a creature of the water. its why I like you Mac." She gave him a thumbs up and patted the small boat. "You're boat is very smooth, I can see now why I didn't hear you coming across the water.
the news of him and Lizzy breaking up though made the mermaid frown before cocking her head again. The two had obviously loved each other very much so why the break up? Maybe perhaps they didn't as much as they did before? The mermaid wasn't sure but hearing about it made her worried for her friend. She would have to visit the spider demon when she could.
"I suppose sorries are in order? I'm sorry that you guys broke up, I thought you guys were truly meant to be. Although if you are happier the way you are now...I suppose there isn't much to complain about yes?"

Mac certainly didn't mind sharing his boat with a cute ghoul in a cute little bikini. Not even slightly.
"Uhh...yes?" He answered to her plethora of questions, humming thoughtfully. He did feel bad for hitting her, but he still felt bad for more or less using her...which was something of a big deal for him. "Ah, thanks! My uncle and I built this. She's pretty great, innitshe?" He reached over, patting the ledge with pride. This boat was the source of some wounds and too many splinters, but it was all worth it in the end; she was a great little vessel.
"Oh, I can still complain. I'm happy where I am now, though. At least there's that." Mac shrugged, looking into the inky blackness of the water. It wasn't really a conversation he liked having, and so he just tried to avoid it entirely. So far, he was doing okay enough. "How's your love life going?"

"She is, It must be nice to have a family member who shares your same loves and desires!" She tried not to think of Undine, who had passed. Her sister shared most everything with Amphi, and now the mermaid would carry on her memory as she could. Instead she tipped over to feel the hull of the boat. It was curved perfectly and well....she understood why Mac liked it so much. While she was a mermaid and loved water...sometimes it was nice to float on top of it as well.
She laughed, looking at him and shaking her head. "I suppose that's true. But I'm glad your happy Mac." She knew what it was like, to go through that break up period. Her's and Roch's....it wasn't a long time coming to her but...As much as she loved him, they had wild rides all involving around her. Roch needed someone normal...Not the mermaid with a tracker in her core who got kidnapped or just plain offered herself to humans on a silver platter.
At the mention of her love life, Amphi stilled.
"Ah..." She laughed nervously before looking away, "I was dating Roch...but we broke up. I haven't seen him since...." It was a very neutral tone. She was sad about it of course, but at the same time....She knew the reaper was better off. "Not much of a love life now..." or any life honestly! "Are you still aiming to be a boatman Mac? No that's not the word um....Landwalkers use it...Ferryman! Are you still aiming to be a ferryman?" Two could play the lets avoid relationship talk game.
