Time seemed to stand still as he looked at his patient, a wave of sadness washed over the stallion; the bobcat was not going to survive. The cat’s muscular form was riddled with arrows. Humans had taken it upon themselves to chase the cat as a kind of sport turning the creature into a demented form of porcupine, shooting arrows until some pierced its flesh, leaving a trail of blood for the vicious two leggers to follow. Somehow, the wounded creature had lost the hunters and made it safely to the healer’s watchful eye. But it was still too late; the arrows had pierced many of the vital organs. A whine escaped the maw of the bloody feline, “Shhh. Don't move too much, will only cause you more pain." He looked upon the animal with eyes filled with sadness, "I’m sorry; there is not much I can do for you. The arrows have pierced many of your important organs needed for your survival.” He was not sure the creature understood him or not, the cat looked at him with pain filled eyes , “I can give you something to ease the pain, soon your suffering will be over.” The black winged stallion began to prepare the poppy mush, “There is a land parallel to this one and in that land there is never ending plains where you can run forever. In this place you will never hunger, never age, and never be hunted. Family stands beside you and gives you strength as you transition into that new life. It is truly spectacular. Here eat this.” The healer gave the bobcat the herbal pain killer, “You will not be alone.” With some effort the feline was able to devour the bitter tasting plant mush. A few minutes passed and the cloud of pain left the cat’s eyes.
With a slight bow of its head, it said its silent thanks, and then closed its citrine eyes on the living world forever.
“How could those humans do something so barbaric and they call us the animals.” Westrion shook his head, causing his long black mane to sway. With cautious actions he removed the arrows from the dead feline and prepared it for the burial. It took some time placing enough stones around and over the body of the deceased creature. Caramel chocolate eyes stared at the grave, with a quick skillful movement, Westrion, Son of Háidēs, Healer of the Sick and Dying, removed a purple narcissus flower from his mane and placed it upon the rocky resting place.
“Run free in the Elysian Fields, Little Friend.”

A melody wafted on the breeze, light and delicate like the tinkling of glass. Lament closed her eyes and let her heavy body sway as she moved. This burden on her back, keeping her slower than she cared for. The wind stirred at her hair and her veil, and a word caught on the wind for a moment then blurred away.
Opening her eyes, she weaved her way through the trees careful not to ensare her branches and then she saw him. He had to have been the one to have spoken. He was tall, and dark--but there was also light in him. She had seen the ferryman before, and this--though like to him was different. This was not the ferryman she remembered.
"Ferryman," her voice was quiet, thoughtful. "What soul departs to bring you here? Has there been battle and death, have there been more to join the Elysian Fields?"

He was still staring at the rocky grave when she came upon him; her large tree swaying as she walked with delicate steps as she tried not to ensnare her branches upon the branches of the forest. Her eyes were like grey storm clouds and blood tears fell from them like rain. Her silver mane would have painted her as older mare, but her features were young. A memory tugged at the stallion’s mind, and his eyes widened in surprise, it was many years ago when he had met this same mare. She still had the air of sadness around her, which caused a few questions to rise. Was she still trying to discover what happened to herself? Did she remember him? Perhaps not, since she was giving him the title of Ferryman.
“There was no battle of legend fought here, just a display of humans who have left the belief that all animals should be cared for, not hunted down like sport.” He looked out at the forest, it appeared so calm, he turned back his eyes to the tree mare, “A bobcat, who still had much to live for, was shot with arrows and left for dead. I tried to do all I could, but I could not help the poor creature, just ease her pain and guide her passage into the Elysian Fields.”
His caramel eyes were filled with sadness as he looked from the mare back to the grave. Life and death, were two things he saw each day in his line of work; he rejoiced when they lived and felt sorrow when they died, but he knew that the sorrow would not last for they were in a better place with those who loved them. Westrion wondered who he would see if he should pass to the Elysian Fields; grandparents he has never met? His real brother that was taken at birth and replaced with his other brother?
He pushed his thoughts aside, he was getting distracted, his gaze returned to the mare. Should he tell her that they have met once before? No, there would be a time and a place for that, “Do you believe that every creature should have the chance to be guided into Elysia?” To the stallion this was an important question, he believed that everyone should receive the chance to be saved and or be guided into the Elysian Fields. Yes there are those who are evil and deserve a darker place than the happy golden fields of Elysia, but once they passed over they would be judged for their crimes and placed in the appropriate hell.

"Is not earth the real hell?" The tears fell faster down her face, the blood making trails down her skin. The paths of them were familiar, etched on daily like a canvas before ceasing again. Sometimes her whole vision swam, "Ferryman, don't you know? This place is hell, we must all serve our time here."
She paused, "Oh what sins I have committed to suffer in this hell as I have. What have you done? Is this a gift or a punishment for things you have done?"
Her eyes looked him up and down, "Or is it only what is expected of the child of death? I remember you, Westrion. You were small when we met and my journey which had felt so long was just beginning. How many years has passed between us? I have roved this earth, this waking hell for answers and all answers flee me. Is this world hell for you?"
She looked down at the little grave, memories flashing through her mind without taking hold. "I think we all should have the chance to let things end and go somewhere else, even if it is to trade one hell for the next. I wonder what my life would be in the Elysian Fields?"

He thought about all he has seen, he could understand why Lament believed that this earth was hell, but for him, he did not see it that way and he did not see the Elysian Fields as a type of hell either, more like a paradise filled with rolling hills and lovely white flowers, where nymphs danced and soquili ran free without the worry of famine, age, or death. Earth to Westrion was a type of limbo, you were not really in hell nor were you in a paradise, “Yes and no, it really depends on the point of view. Many would see earth as a hell where we all must pay penitence for our past crimes, while others look upon the land as a paradise, but I believe that is it a mixture of the two. It is neither a paradise nor a hell, but a point in our existence were we must wait and determine if we are worthy of paradise or belong in the fiery pits of the Underworld. Does that make any sense? And I am not sure what I did in my past lives to deserve this time on earth, perhaps nothing at all or perhaps something terrible, my time here on earth is a time to learn.”
Westrion gave a little surprised smile, so she did remember, but she did not appear to relish the fact of their reunion. He felt himself wanting to ask if she had found what she was looking for, but her words stopped him, it appeared she was still in the middle of her search. “It is nice to see you again Lament, it has been many years, when I was just a healer’s apprentice.” He looked away from Lament, to the grave, and then to the forest around him, “The stories my father told me of the Elysian Fields were lovely, I am sure you would love it there, it is anything but a hell, it is a land where dreams and reality combine.”

Lament stood and listened to his rich, warm voice. It was like soothing rain, like rich dirt where she dug up vegetables. She heard him speak of what he thought of this life and the next, and he sounded so certain--so understanding, so complacent with what he was and where he was.
Had she ever been that way?
She thought she could remember laughter, but...maybe that was just a dream? May it wasn't? She closed her eyes a moment. "If it's a nice place, a heaven--I don't think I'll make it there."
The branches swayed, and the bloody tears fell faster. "I think Westrion...I think that once, I did something terrible. I don't think whatever it was I can ever outrun or pay off. Maybe I'll stay forever, or maybe I'll go to the Underworld. I can't escape fate...and I can't remember anything but the awful pain of it like a shadow of a memory."

Westrion looked at the mare, truly looked at her, she appeared tortured, but yet there was something good about her, something that would allow her to have a paradise be it now or in the future, “You never know what the Fates have decreed, they are funny beings, always playing games and making us who walk upon this earth believe one thing instead of another. I believe we all get a paradise, and that means you will as well. Your life has been hard and you do not see the beauty around you, but you will get to see your paradise one day.” He smiled at the mare, hoping he was not over stepping his bounds. He felt drawn to the mare, he has never had this feeling before, it was as if the two of them were connected somehow. He did not want to voice this to the mare.
He watched as her tears of blood fell down her lovely face faster, his heart constricted, he wanted to help her, but did not know how to do so. What could he tell her that would alleviate her pain, would she believe him if he told her that many where given a second chance and this was hers? That she should no longer live in the past but accept the present for what it is? A present, a gift? “You may have done something wrong in your past, but you are here now and different from what you were then. You have been given a second chance, and perhaps you have repaid your debt? Your memories for what happened in your past?” He was hopeful that her memories where the debt’s cost, but he was not sure, those who played with life and death had strange contracts and asked for the most oddest of things.
An idea came to the warrior healer as he remembered all those who tried to change their fate, some who took on the task failed, while those who had a pure heart where able to succeed. “You may not be able to escape your fate, but you are able to change it.”

Lament heard his words like a far off hope, and she closed her eyes to them. Change fate. "How can you change fate? Isn't fate...inevitable?" Her heart thudded violently in her chest as she looked at him. She didn't know if she was afraid, or if she was angry...or what this feeling was.
But a shadow of a memory flickered like firelight on cave walls. She had felt this way before, once. She knew that, but all the details were blotted out, smoothed away as if they didn't exist anymore.
"If you know so much, have you changed your fate? Will you..." She hesitated, it was a lot to ask of someone she knew only so briefly. "Will you help me to change mine?" She whispered it weakly. The tree swayed on her back, the blood blotted out her vision for a moment as she looked at him in earnest.

“Your fate is not set in stone, it constantly changes with the choices you make, think of your fate like a trickling stream, a rock or a log can change the direction of that stream. It forever moves forward, but there are bends and twists that allow for the direction to change from one stream into another.” It was how he liked to think of Fate, that one was able to change their destiny and make their own choices. Westrion thought back through his life, he had done so much and made choices that have created the stallion he was today. He really wanted to answer her, had he really changed his fate or was he following the path the gods set out for him?
His caramel eyes locked on the mare, “When I was younger I almost died, I had resigned myself to the slow suffocating fate of death by quick sand, but when I thought I was truly gone to the Underworld a mare saved me. Was it my fate to die that day or live? And I also believe you changed my fate that day when we first met, you made me want to help those who were on the brink of death. Is that change of fate enough?” Her words came out softly but they clawed at his heart and did not show any sign of letting go. This mare needed his help and he would do anything to make sure she accomplished her dream of changing her fate, he gave her a small smile, “I will help you change your fate Lament, I promise you that.”

His words were low, and full of promise. She could feel the sigh of breath give between her lips, she had not known she was holding her breath. She closed her eyes, the crimson tears spilling still though she willed them not to.
He would help her embark on this journey to change fate--and still she had no hope that it would change, except him. His bright eyed and shining belief that things would change if only she willed it so.
Fate could change with a ripple, with a twist, with a kiss, or with a soft whisper of words--that's what he believed. And she would see this out, see if fate could change--if the dark road would come again unto light or if she would be shroud in darkness forever.
She opened her eyes to him, "Then where will we go? What will we do to change it?" Or perhaps, speaking with him was ripple enough...maybe fate was changing already.

Caramel eyes watched as his words reached the mare, a change seemed to come over her and tears of blood came spilling from her eyes. Distress filled the stallion that he caused her to cry, he did not mean to cause her to cry. He took a step closer to the mare who had her eyes closed, he wanted to comfort her, he wanted to be there for her, he wanted to be the stallion who helped her change her fate. The daunting task of what was to happened weighed on the stallion’s shoulders; he knew that it would be no easy feat and that they will learn things about each other which have been hidden.
Her eyes opened, again he was struck with the urge to aid and comfort, “We will go where we must. Here is only the beginning and it is through our choices and actions in which we will change our fate.” He cast his gaze around them, “There is a saying that sky is the limit, but I do not believe that, I believe that there is no limit for what we can do or achieve. Since we place barriers for ourselves, we fail to reach our full potential. And when we are able to free ourselves from the blockades we have created, that is when we will be on the path to change our destiny.”

She turned away from the blistering bright of his eyes. There was so much hope there that it nearly blinded her. Closing her eyes, she listened to what he said...There were no limits to what they could do. But she had felt the limits before, she had reached them and been destroyed by them.
Faith was enough. He said things like that, idioms she'd heard long and hard. But now...oh now, she had hated them so bright and cheery. But now, she was going to give in and try this road. "I will trust you, I will trust in your hope...but I have no hope it will change things." She couldn't keep the sad tone out of her voice.

Westrion slowly nodded his head, he knew what he was asking was quite a lot and it did not help that they were near strangers to each other. He bowed his head to the mare, “And that is all that I ask, just believe in me and be my friend, and whatever happens later happens. We can only truly live in this moment of time.” He tried to stop talking, what he was saying may only scare the mare away, she had agreed to his help and he did not wish to ruin it by preaching to her. He closed his eyes and tried to rein in his thoughts. Slowly he opened his eyes and looked at the mare, “Where do you wish to begin?”
Again thoughts of the daunting task ahead of him threatened to swamp him and give up, but he blocked out the negative emotion. He had promised to help Lament in any way he could and he would follow through with that promise, no matter the cost, for that is what friends do.

She smiled a little wistfully, "At the beginning, of course." She hummed the broken tune. "My first memories, the very first that I can remember took place a few odd miles from here in a graveyard. I awoke, confused--startled. My throat burning, neck aching."
The tree swayed on her back, "That's when I met Hades."
