With regard to the city, Switch the Farfetch'd felt both a strong draw and repellence. It was a source of great curiosity and even a sense of magic. But the unknown inspires great fear in the fearful, and worse, when certain traumas are linked with that same unknown. She was no exception.
Even so, she had, though various circumstances, found herself right in the middle of town. She had no way to mark herself as belonging to a trainer. Nor, she repeatedly and heatedly told herself, did she want one, except that it would keep her safe here, in theory. All she could really do would be to act like she belonged here, but the jerking wobble of her knees, her wide-eyed and fearful glances at the slightest movement, those sneaky movements from shadow to shadow, any of these suspicious actions would give her away. She tried desperately to calm herself and try to act... normal.
Despite her wanderings, she repeatedly returned to the same place, the home of a specific human. The human girl, Theo, had called him Carlos. Perhaps it was the umpteenth time that she peeked in the window to make sure she was all right. The farfetch'd found the girl with her wrapped-up knee, curled up in a chair sipping slowly at something steaming hot and staring into the flames of a fireplace. Watch the Houndoom was likewise curled up, at her feet. Now and then the girl's lips moved, or she cried. The curl of her shaking lip was painful to watch. The man patted her head whenever he walked by; he was also talking to her, with what Switch could tell were kind words.
There was a lot she could tell just by looking. They had been through a lot together though Rocío had never bothered to capture Switch with her long-since repaired pokéball. There just wasn't a need. But because of that abnormality in what would otherwise have developed into a typical trainer-pokémon relationship, Switch found herself outside looking in with a horrible sense of longing. She felt unbearably alone.
She turned away from the window and glanced up and down the street. Her family was gone. This girl didn't really need her. What was she going to do?

"Calanthia, would you kindly slow down, so I can keep up?"an older female voice complained as a female with chestnut hair chased a cactus Pokemon down the street. The Maractus turned her yellow eyes on the woman and seemed to smile, thinking of a reply.
"Hey, it isn't my fault you are slow, Serena. Just admit it, you are not as young as you used to be. I bet Dea would be faster than you are and she is on crutches,"Calanthia teased, though to anyone who could not understand her, it would sound like she was just saying variations of her name.
"Hey, that is so not fair. And my daughter would not be faster than I am, at least not until she is fully back to normal. Oh and Callie, watch where you are..."Serenity began, before her Pokemon walked right into what looked like a Farfetch'd.
"Oh, I am so terribly sorry! I had been just teasing my trainer, but I should have watched where I was going,"Calanthia squeaked an apology to the other Pokemon.

Switch was admittedly so self-absorbed with her own misery that she had ceased to fear the humans all around her, and most importantly to her immediate situation, to look where she was going. She was so shocked by the impact that seemingly came from out of nowhere, that she ceased to feel anything. No pain of impact, no pain of the heart. She went completely limp, and was simply, quite literally, floored.
It took her a moment to register the maractus' words, a moment spent picking herself up and dusting off her feathers. She blinked at Calanthia rather dumbly at first, until it finally dawned on her what had happened, though she could not understand why running into someone would have knocked her to the ground. Had she really been that upset? Still bewildered by it, she replied slowly, "Oh, hm... I guess I wasn't either." I was too busy thinking, remembering...
She dropped her eyes and frowned, feeling a wave of the same all-encompassing pain, and with an effort shook it off. No, that is a dangerous state of mind to be in. She could feel it pressing in anyway, and forced herself to look back up at the maractus. "I'm very sorry. Were you injured or anything?" she asked, even though she was the one that had fallen!
It wasn't until a moment later that she remembered what Calanthia had said. Her reason for not looking where she was going was that she had been teasing her trainer. Eyes widening with the realization, she nevertheless jerked with a start when she looked upward, beyond the maractus, and found a human there. She tried to remain calm, but she could not quite keep herself from fidgeting.

"Oh no, I assure you I am completely uninjured and quite alright. I was more worried about you, I did not expect to hit another with such force that it would knock them over. Serena has told me a bunch of times to mind where I am going, so accidents like this do not happen,"Calanthia replied. She looked curiously at the other Pokemon, wondering why she was wandering all alone like that. She looked back to Serenity, wondering if her trainer had any ideas on the matter.
"Are you both alright, I saw the collision as I caught up to you, Callie,"Serenity inquired, looking over both of them to see if there was any sign of damage.
"Nope, I think we are both fine, Serena. I was just apologizing for running into her, which was really quite rude of me,"Calanthia answered. She turned to the bird Pokemon and could see how nervous she looked. She tilted her head to the side, wondering what the other was afraid of.
"Is something wrong, you look like you have seen a ghost? Are you running from something?"Callie asked.
"Calanthia, don't be so noisy! I know you want to help everyone, but give her some space,"Serenity reminded the other. Callie hung her head and mumbled an apology.

"Oh no, I don't think it was that you hit me so hard, just that I was not paying attention," Switch offered, glancing nervously up at the human.
Her eyes widened greatly when she realized they were conversing. They weren't just talking at each other and perhaps getting the gist of it, like a pet and human normally do, but actually speaking to one another and understanding the words!
"I... I..." Her mind spun with wild confusion. The maractus had asked Switch what was bothering her so much. She tried to grasp this question so that she could form some kind of reply, and failed.
How were they doing that? She and Rocío couldn't communicate well at all, at least not so directly. Many pokémon could converse, despite being members of different species and speaking their own languages. But humans were notoriously unable, unwilling, or simply ignorant of the possibility. This conundrum alone distracted her enough to forget her worries and instead focus on a new question: was it possible to speak with Theo? The girl didn't even know her name, even though Switch had proclaimed it to her clearly.
That burning curiosity gave her more than enough courage to address the human without trembling. In fact, now while she spoke she hopped around from foot to food gesturing quite animatedly. Unabashed, she took hold of the maractus' arm lightly (obviously holding no ill will at all), and pointed finger-like wing feathers between the two. It was probably enough to draw a stare or two from passing strangers, though the farfetch'd was oblivious to how embarrassing her behavior might be. "How are you doing that? How can you speak to each other? Can you actually understand me? How come other humans can't understand me?" she jabbered.

Calanthia was a little surprised when the small bird took ahold of her and started to ask a bunch of questions. She looked over to Serenity, who gave her an encouraging nod of her head.
"Serena can speak to any Pokemon she chooses, she is a Pokemon linguist, well among other things. She has a special gift of being able to understand any Pokemon around her. Those close to her she can understand better, but she can talk to any of them. Yes, she would be able to understand anything you say, though once in awhile, if a Pokemon talks to fast, she may misunderstand it. Most humans have not studied our speaking very much, so cannot understand us very well, unless we belong to them. Also, Serena has special powers,"Calanthia explained.
"Yes, what Callie said is true, I can understand you. So anything you tell me, I know what you are saying and can reply back,"Serenity smiled, kneeling down to where she was eye level with Switch.

A pokémon linguist? Was that what they called someone who could converse with pokémon? Switch's excited movements stopped and her grip on Calanthia's arm eased while she considered this woman's abilities. She almost forgot that Serenity was human, the creature she feared most, while she and the maractus explained the situation. "Special powers?"
Finally realizing consciously that the human was kneeling down beside her, the farfetch'd startled and hopped one step backward, letting go of Calanthia's arm completely in the process. "But any human can learn it? Could a little girl learn how?" Maybe the special power was that she could understand all pokémon; if so, perhaps she and Rocio would one day be able to converse normally.

Calanthia and Serenity both looked at each other, the cactus Pokemon trying to decide how best to explain her trainer's abilities.
"Well, Serena..is a special human, you see. She is psychic, which means she can talk telepathically to people and humans. She can also read minds, among other things. She has at least one of her daughters that can also do that. Though, all humans have a capability to understand Pokemon they interact with,"Calanthia answered.
"They may not know exactly what a Pokemon is saying, they can get a feel for what they want or like. Think of it like a person who doesn't speak very often, you could find out what they want the more time you spend with them,"Serenity added.

At first, Switch was too crestfallen to respond to the maractus' reply. However, there was hope. Perhaps her conversations would be largely one-sided but over time, perhaps, Rocío would understand the gist. She found herself gazing down at her feet feeling not entirely reassured. Well, it was... better than nothing.
Serenity's addition was also thought-provoking. She had met someone like that before, a pawniard. His striking red and silver form appeared clearly in her mind. Yes, that pawniard she had met near the sea had not once spoken to her. But the more they interacted, the more she felt that eventually they would understand one another. She wondered if he had ever made it beyond the marsh. Her wish to see him again someday was sudden; perhaps they would learn more about one another and become good friends.
Slowly she looked back up at the pair, tried to ignore the now automatic surge of fright she felt in her chest. Then she sighed and felt renewed hope and determination. Yes, determination would spur her on. "Thank you. I have someone," she paused and took a slow, deep breath, "someone, a human, that I would like to know me better. Not a trainer. A... friend."

Calanthia smiled softly when the other explained that she had a human friend that she wanted to be closer to. She knew that was a very noble reason to want to want another to understand you.
"No worries, humans and Pokemon can be friends, even if they are not our trainers. If you keep trying, you are bound to learn more about one another. It just takes time and effort to get the results we desire. Maybe find out something she likes and in turn, she will find out something you like. Our actions sometimes speak louder than what we say,"Calanthia explained.
"And also remember, humans are not scary people. We are like Pokemon in the way that we each come in many different shapes and personalities,"Serenity assured.

"Ah. So it's not so strange for a pokémon and a human to be friends. I'm glad." But to achieve that, she had to think about Rocío more in terms of a friend than a charge that needed protection. She also had things she liked or wanted.
They had come to this town to see a winter festival. Theo had insisted on making the trip for Switch just as much as for herself. "I see. We both wanted to see the winter festival but missed it. It's over now. There has to be something else," she thought with a sigh, then after another moment of reflection, looked at her two companions and smiled. "I'll think of something."
Serenity's words seemed very obvious when Switch pondered on them. The Cotier family were all very nice, and they were human. They all had different personalities and sometimes picked on each other, just like any other family. And Serena was also a nice person. But some others are terrible, she thought with a shiver. "I... know that. Theo is a nice girl, and she has a good family. So I came into the city to try to face my fear. But I was starting to forget that when my fear overcame me."
Thanks to these two, she had not fallen into that pit of despair and terror. She had so much to consider. She needed to adjust her thinking, and she was starting to believe that her decisions so far had put her on the path she wanted in life. She looked at each of them in turn: "Calanthia. Serena. I'm Switch. And I'm very glad I met you."
Dea and #Teddy# I'm not sure how far you would like to go with this PD since it's now in the past. But I'm really glad we've continued it. o: <3

Calantha had a look in her eye, one that clearly said she was up to something, as she motioned for Serenity to lean closer and she whispered in her ear. The older woman nodded her head, a small smile on her lips.
"What exactly did you want to see of the winter festival, might I ask? Did you come for something special? And I am glad you have made friends with some humans, I learned from Serena how wonderful it is to have a family. I do hope you can overcome your fear,"Calantha replied.
"It is nice to meet you, Switch. I am glad we were able to meet you too. It is always a pleasant surprise to make a new friend when you least expect it,"Serenity agreed.
((As long as you want to, I am fine just using this as character building or as a PD for Calantha, I haven't had her grow yet))

“Honestly, I don’t know much about it. She described things to me that she saw when she visited another time and she wanted me to see them. She said something about playing and costumes, and decorations. Just walking down the street, I’ve seen some of the decorations that they were taking down. I can imagine what they looked like before with the lights and ribbons.” Since it was a winter festival, maybe they would see its full glory next winter.
“Thank you, it’s difficult to get over my fear, but you’re helping me a lot by making me think about things in a new way. Making a friend helps a lot too,” she agreed with a nod.
Dea and #Teddy# I’m okay with continuing if you want! I can’t have her do a whole lot more though because I have a PD that took place after it on the same day.

Calanthia smiled softly, an idea definitely in her mind now, though slightly different than before.
"How about next year when the festival happens again, you find Serena and I..we can show you all the best things about the festival. I know it is a long time to wait, but I think it will definitely be worth it. There is all kinds of beauty to the festival,"Calanthia smiled.
"Well, I am glad that we have been able to help you then. I know how hard it can be to get over one's fears, but friends and family help a lot in working through it,"Serenity answered.
((Alright, then we shall stop when you want to then))

"Yes, next year," Switch replied with a little hesitation, some uncertainty to her quack. She fell silent as she thought about it in more detail. Next year. What could happen in the next year? She had no family left except for the girl. But she had more than made up for it, hadn't she? There was no doubt in her mind that Theo would like to come again next year, under better circumstances. Switch nodded. "Yes, I would like that. I think maybe Rocío would like to meet you then, too. Maybe you can show us both the best parts of the festival. I think it will be worth it."
Dea and #Teddy# Quick reply before work. xD All right, it seems like this could naturally come to an end in the next couple of posts. :3
