Mot was moseying along, humming a happy Mot like tune when he stopped dead in his tracks, spurred heels clinking sharply.
Ahead in the hall was Riley. He remembered what she'd done and said in the dream, from her fake self to the self that said kind words to him. According to Gene that dream was shared for all of them. According to that dream, Riley seemed to remember him a bit...
But what made him want to turn tail was the very beginnings of it.. the shy and ghouly preistess she'd be---
"PFFFFTAAHAHAHAHAHA!!" He... couldn't stop. Seeing the noble and straight laced Riley as a sweet and shy... just..
"S-sorry! AAAA AHAHAHHAAAHAHAA!!!" He doubled over, howling with laughter.

Riley hadn't seen Mot since the incident. That was fine by her. In fact, it was better this way. She needed time to forget what had happened. The only solace she took from all of this was that he wasn't one of the awakened - which meant he likely had no idea what happened in that other world.
Except..
Malodore wasn't an awakened, either. And yet..
It was these thoughts that streaked through her mind like lightning the moment she realized Mot was at the other end of the hallway she was walking down. She forced herself to act normal. There was nothing wrong - as long as he didn't -
...
The flurry of color and movement that occurred next was a blur of action, tentacles snapping into life as she surged forward, wrapping his arms and neck up and pinning him to the wall. Her eyes were as thin as slits, glaring at him viciously. Laughter is inappropriate at a time like this, my friend. Riley's voice sounded strange. It wasn't the typical anger she afforded her enemies. It was more of a high pitched, crackly anger, that signified that maybe, just maybe, she was a little thrown by this situation. She emphasized the word friend with a forceful, and desperate implication.
If you are laughing because you have retained memories that are not your own, I highly suggest you forget everything. Quickly. Was she blushing? Good Jack on high, she was. I wasn't - it wasn't - that wasn't me!

Mot squeaked as tentacles wrapped around his limbs, effectively pinning him to a wall. His laughter ceased abruptly, gulping and sliding his feet against the wall in a feeble attempt at getting away. What was it with him and getting pinned to walls?
Riley'd separate voice cracked in his mind, and he was almost terrified... but she sounded... embarrassed? Her blush and the last line she spoke it became apparent.
A snort.
A giggle. Another giggle.
Mot turned red and started laughing again.

Riley had thrown everything she'd had at him in one desperate move, and still he laughed. She was ruined. Utterly and completely ruined. The anger fled her in a moment, and she shook him violently.
Mot. MOT. You must stop finding this funny. She released him from her hold, and backed away, turning her back on him. This isn't funny, for me. This is treacherous. Her hands wrapped around her arms tightly. That ghoul, whoever she was, she has warped everything I have worked to build up. Her head turned, side glancing at the boil with a tortured expression. Is this how it's going to be, now? You'll look at me, and all you'll see is that weakling, and laugh? Perhaps this is what Shun sees now, as well. And Gene. And maybe even Xiu.
Riley's head tilted, before her gaze dropped away.
That wasn't me. It wasn't me. Whoever it was, she's dead now - as she should be. But it wasn't..
She could say it until she was blue in the face, but it wouldn't matter. The damage was done.

Mot tried to stop laughing, settling for a giggle or strangled chuckle. Finally she let him down, and he somehow managed to ebb his laughing fit, his grin still painted on his face.
Riley began to speak of how that made her feel. How the whole thing seemed to taint her image. Mot frowned, feeling terribly guilty all of the sudden. He fidgeted with his poncho, looking sheepishly at the ground as Riley turned her back to him.
Awww gosh. :C Mot was a bad friend.
"I--I'm sorry, Captain.." Mot murmured honestly, digging his heel into the floor. "It was just so uncharacteristic to see you like that.. even if it wasn't you. So I couldn't help but laugh."

Of course you could have helped but laugh. She snapped back, still turned away. But you didn't. Because you saw me in a light that is forbidding, and now you can't turn it off.
Finally, she turned back to him, and her head rose, chin lifted in an attempt at pride. I wished nothing more than to forget what happened. I went in there to save Xiu, not to disgrace myself so thoroughly. But it seems I get no choice. So be it. You no longer have to call me your captain. I know that you don't respect me, anymore. Her expression lowered, as the truth of those words bled into it. But I won't.. I won't have you laughing at me. That's too much, Mot. I can't accept that.
Flashes of memories that weren't hers flickered in her mind, when she looked at his familiar face. Her brow furrowed, and her head shook in dismay. The ignorant child that wore her face had ruined so much, for her.

"Whaaaaat!?" Mot yelped, shaking his head wildly, his ponytail flopping over his shoulders. "No, Captain! I didn't laugh because I don't respect you. Not at all! It's because I really like you that I felt comfortable enough to laugh..." The reaper's mouth pulled into an anxious frown. "I promise I won't laugh again! Don't be mad.." A pout, with terra cotta coloured eyes staring pleadingly. "You'll always be the most amazing and powerful person in my mind."

Mot's words did little to change her mind, until he used the powerhouse of phrases in his last sentence. Amazing and powerful in his mind - she easily disregarded how flirtatious that sentence was in her world, because she was used to the way the non-illithid used these words by now. But they still made her blush remain, if only because it made her feel better.
But she kept her back to him, still.
How can I be sure you aren't just saying this to ease my hurt feelings? I don't want lies, Mot. I can see through lies. I just wanted things to be.. the way they were before her.
Finally, she turned, her eyes slit with a sort of suspicious discontent. Her, and him. After all, she wasn't as naive as her counterpart. She knew that if, given time..
Thankfully, the affections of the fragments did not reflect emotions of their real counterparts at all. If there was anyone who could prove that theory.. it was her.
It was just important, to her ego, to point out that it wasn't just her fault.

"But.." Mot had nothing to prove it. Riyo once said that 90% of everything he said was pure flattery, right? Maybe he really did say it all just to make her feel better. Mot was at a loss. He had no idea how to set things right. How was he to know laughing at an ilithid was not such a good idea? Jeepers. "But Captain, its impossible to erase the past, you know." He replied to her latter comment, rubbing his arm. "But its not impossible to shape the present. If you want others to see you as strong and powerful, then just continue to be the strong and scary ilithid I've always known. Sooner or later not a giggle nor peep will ever be heard again."

She should have known it would be futile to try and argue her point to the boil. Mot was going to say what he felt was right, regardless of what she thought. And she still, most definitely, felt that the other her had stained a permanent mark on her reputation.
I planned on it. She informed him quietly. I simply did not plan on having to deal with laughter from you, of all people. It jars me to know even you were susceptible to this.. She trailed off, waving her hand in the air lightly. I thought.. well, I'm not sure what I thought, anymore.

"Huh? Not from me? But Captain, I love to laugh." Mot frowned, taking a step backward from the ilithid.
"Does it really make you unhappy that I want to laugh with you?"

Riley's expression thinned, clearly dissatisfied with his answer. Not with. At. To laugh with me, I would have to be laughing. At no point in this did I even chuckle, Mot. You were laughing at my expense.. it is not the same.

"You don't.. find it even a little bit funny?" Mot frowned deeper, shoulders sagging.
"Captain, sometimes you need to laugh at yourself, otherwise your pride and ego will get the better of you." Maybe that didn't matter to her. That made him even more sad. She took herself so seriously, it was scary.

And here, Mot had her interest. She stared at him, perplexed, and shook her head.
What about the situation was funny? You understand what it means to me, to be.. thought of a certain way. But this woman, this fake, she was sickly. Weak. Mot, she was disgusting.
This was the root of why Riley found none of the situation funny. That woman's life, so brief and fleeting, so bright and innocent, was an eyesore that Riley wished away, never to exist. She'd killed the weakling with her bare hands, in her own mind.
It was hard to find anything funny, after that.

"Maybe she seemed weak and sickly to you.. but as far as I could see, she was sensitive to others and saw the world in such a bright and innocent light. Sure, she was a bit naiive...ok a lot naiive. She wasn't you. But I think it was interesting to see another wise of you.. even if.. its a side that doesn't exist." He grimaced and rubbed his neck again.
"I guess it isn't funny.."
