The cool, clear day was perfect for climbing the skies, and something darted and twisted through the air, a spaded tail lashing with glee. Her powerful wings beat at the sky, and Theia was the spitting image of contempt and almost arrogant pride. She was healthy, strong, and young, her small frame lending itself to speed--and deception. Just because she was much tinier than her relatives meant little! After all, her grandmother, the alpha of the feared Black Skull herd, was just as small as she, and no one was fool enough to challenge her authority. Those who did, well, they didn't find themselves breathing much longer afterwards.
Theia had wandered far from the familiar territory of her home today, but, save for Skinwalkers, the Kalona was convinced that she had nothing to fear. Why, even a Skinwalker would not walk away from a scuffle with her without a limp!
Movement caught her eye, quick and sporadic, and Theia did not hesitate to fold her wings and plummet like a stone. A rabbit. Her hooves struck the animal even as she back-winged furiously, stirring up dust every which way. A clean kill, and while it was little more than a mouthful, her tail flicked from side to side with satisfaction.
Of course, it didn't occur seem to occur to her that she might be intruding in someone else's territory.
Perhaps it had, and the young mare had simply decided she didn't care.

Myrddin caught the scent of someone new in his territory. He sniffed at the air, trying to find the direction it was coming from. Was it that one Kalona stallion who had been after his treasure? He gave her a stern look and a word to remain where she was as he stalked off in the general direction the new smell was coming from. And oh, how the smell of blood mingled now in the air. That coppery tang was unmistakable. Blood had been spilled on his territory, but thankfully not his treasure's blood. He charged off across the ground. While flight would have been faster, the scent was ground level and would have been lost in the air. He let his legs stretch as far as they could and before he knew it, he saw the source. She was small compared to himself, but she could easily blend in with her surroundings with her colorings. She had her back to him, but the spade tail tipped him off as to her breed as it whipped back and forth in joy. He lingered, debating on stepping forth and scaring her off. But she wouldn't know about his treasure, his pet. And she was the first pure he had seen since chasing off the stallion. He missed interacting with something of higher intelligence than his prize, interacting with something above simple meat. Well, his mind was made up. He tucked his wings tightly to his side and slowly approached.

Her head snapped up at the sound of something big moving through the area, and Theia wasted no time in spinning about to face the sudden new arrival. Oh, she could have taken her time, added some flair to her step, but if it was a bear--or worse, a Skinwalker--she would die a foolish death, and the thought was enough to shame her to the core.
The last thing she'd expected to see was a large, red male approaching, and Theia had never seen one who liked quite like him. He was Kalona, clearly, but also something more, and her ears pricked with interest despite herself.
Of course, if he was here thinking that he could scavenge her meal... She took the time to spread her wings to their fullest extent, a seemingly absentminded gesture, before she folded them neatly at her sides. The gleam in her eyes, however, never dimmed. "Why is it that all you interesting fellows only show up after I've killed, mm?" She teased, but she held her ground in case he decided to rush her. This wasn't her territory, after all!
"Unless you're hoping you can convince me for a bite..."

He let out a snort at her question, which he found quite humorous. "Oh, it was just your scent, though the smell of fresh blood was enticing. Like an exotic perfume from a rare flower."
He made a note of her stance and stopped moving towards her. It couldn't be said he was an agreeable dragon--when he wanted to be. He tilted his head to the side, looking at her inquisitively. "I'm quite capable of feeding myself and it would be foolish to take such a meager morsel." He frowned harshly quite suddenly. "What brings you to my territory?"

The mare arched her neck at that, and her amusement was practically palpable. "Such a way with words. I didn't expect that, not from a brute like you." To another, it would have been an insult, but from the way her eyes slid over his frame.... well, Theia was used to big, powerful Kalona stallions. In fact, she expected nothing less.
She made a good show of fluttering her wings again at his question, as though she couldn't quite make up her mind if he deserved an answer or not. "I go where I please. That it happened to be your territory today was mere coincidence. Fear not, Beastie. I have my own home to return to, and soon I shall leave you and your scrumptious rabbits behind." Her tail twitched though, thoughtful. "But who knew there was one of the blood hidden away so carefully?"

His chest filled with pride at her "warm" word. Well, she was doing no harm just being in his territory. And everyone knew how frequently rabbits repopulated, so a few weren't amiss. It was his treasure he was protective over, so he relaxed his guard marginally.
"Oh, I am so much more than one of the Kalona blood," he almost purred. He took a few steps closer, feeling a bit more comfortable with this female. "Far greater than that." He side-stepped next to her to whisper down into her ear. "I am a red dragon."
He pulled away to get a look at her reaction. He knew few were aware that his kind truly existed in Soquili lands. And it always pleased him when they realized that he was a being to be reckoned with and possibly admire/fear--those two emotions seemed to blend together. "But why so far from home, little mare?"

Theia allowed the stallion to continue his approach, her eyes half-lidded with apparent mirth. If he were to strike her now, she'd be in quite the pickle, but it seemed he only wished to whisper sweet nothings in her ear.
Nothings indeed.
Her head snapped back with surprise, perhaps even disbelief, and her wings twitched before Theia took it upon herself to circle the stallion. Her narrowed eyes missed nothing, roaming over his form without attempting to disguise her actions. The scales, the horns, his odd, but powerful tail... Could it really be?
"A red dragon," She murmured, and her smile was toothy. "I don't know how much more you're worth..." But she was impressed, although she was doing what she could to keep it casual. "Why not, Dragon? I know no equals in my life. I go where I please, when I please it. None can compare to me--so what have I to fear?"
Her neck arched itself once more, and her smile was so smug that it was almost as though she was daring him to keep impressing her.

Oh-ho. This reaction was perhaps the best he had in a long, long time. He made certain to remain still as she moved about him, though he was a bit on the apprehensive side. It was difficult allowing one of the blood at his back, but she was certain her shock would over come anything... malicious. At least for now.
"Oh, you wouldn't understand, little Kalona, what it is like to be one of my kind." Once she was away from his wings, he made certain to stretch them out with a flourish, displaying the full extent of his prowls and rugged looks. "We dragons are so much more. Greater than all."
He folded his wings back to his side, tucking them tightly to his scaled body. "But it is fortunate you came across my territory and just me."

The urge to snake her neck out and snap at his flank was tempting, but the repercussions would be brutal. As assured as she was with her own strength, one didn't just lash out at someone twice her size. Not unless she planned on winning.
"Wouldn't I?" Her nostrils flared at the comment, and Theia proudly lifted her head as though that alone would put him in his place. "Then why," She began in a sweet tone, all but fluttering her eyes at him. "Have I never seen or even heard much of you before? Surely you should have taken hold of this whole land if you're half as great as you claim!"
Oh, but she did eye his wings. An impressive span, that.
"Why is that?" She wanted to know, curious despite herself. Next he was going to tell her that he was a gentle giant and she'd laugh herself to death.

Oh, how she was trying to nettle him, but his own self-confidence made him almost blind to the attempts to bring him down a notch. All it managed to do was remind him of his failure, his anger to the white wind steed. His tail lashed in agitation at the thought. "A take-over is too difficult of a task and I've been far too busy guarding my treasure and chasing after a lost meal."
He stamped a hoof as his tail stilled, releasing the last of his frustration. He could let his anger blind him, dulling his senses. "Skinwalkers prowl all over the lands. I've seen two keeping watch over the very one I hunt. And it's odd that they have joined forces against such a herd."

"Your treasure..." Her ears pricked curiously, and Theia had to wonder what that entailed, exactly. What more did a Kalona need than their own pride and sense of honor? "Hah! So the mighty dragon had prey slip through his hooves, did he? Well, don't fret!" She laughed, but oh, for all her gloating, she too knew the frustration of losing a meal.
It was the mention of Skinwalkers that got a reaction from the young mare, her muzzle wrinkling up to fully bare her teeth. "Filth. Skulking about. They're disgusting." Her tail lashed out with renewed fury, and she could only too easily remember the fallen body of their proud Protector...
"One day, I'll wipe them out myself."

He wouldn't broach any further on the topic of his treasure. He didn't want to risk losing her. And so he didn't mention anything about it to appease her curiosity. However, he did give her a look of incredibility which raised further with mild alarm.
"You little one, take out all the skinwalkers?" He couldn't help but let a snort out as he eyed her frame and the faint shimmer to her hide--which was very appealing. "Though I will admit, it is a bit disheartening to hear that one of your kind could be taken out by those creatures."
Though he knew the loss was the root of her vendetta, he didn't not express his condolences. He knew it would be of little thanks from a pure, though it did show itself however briefly in his molten eyes. "Surely you won't do all that on your own."

Little one? Her reaction was immediate: her head snapped up and her wings flared wide, her stance following suit so that she could make herself feel bigger than she was. "You think I can't?" She bit off each word like a challenge, and his statement seemed to be enough to make her wings sag just a touch. "He was old." She all but hissed. "Old and tired, but one of the most powerful stallions I'd ever known. He was the first to band us together, to encourage us to build our numbers."
He was right in assuming that pity would not be accepted kindly, but he had paid just enough respect to mollify her fiery temper. "Perhaps. Perhaps not." That was said more begrudgingly. "There were two of them. They fell upon us when we were unaware. If that's the way they wish to play, than they can cower when our whole herd descends upon them like the cowards they are."

He watched her as she had her slight tantrum. Though he was quite pleased to see she had such gumption, but comparatively to him she was still on the small side. "Yes, I think you can't," he egged on.
"Now numbers, I can believe would drive them off. But you really are such a little thing." He couldn't help but buff up his own chest--there was no sense in flaring out his wings again since she had taken a close enough look when he revealed his breed.
He resettled himself, stamping a back hoof to relieve himself from standing still so long. "Yes, they are the lot of them cowards. In fact, the meal I stalk has two skinwalkers prowling about his territory. I try my best to stay out of their way, but I've been watching them closely."

Her nostrils flared with temper, and Theia pinned the dragon with the most blazing stare she could manage. Somehow, it did little to make her feel better, particularly when he chose to comment on her size--again! "It's the smallest of snakes that strike where they can go unseen. One doesn't realize their mistake until they die from the venom." She didn't quite hiss, but there was no doubt that she was ruffled now.
"When no one watches, I can slip in close. A bite to the hamstring, or better yet, the throat and I will be the last thing they ever see."
Her ears remained pinned as she listened to him speak, tossing her head impudently. "Why not take them on yourself, then? With your superior size, you should have no trouble." Still, her temporary grudge was temporarily sated. "It would be a good opportunity, though, to eliminate those two. Less trouble for everyone, and you'd get your meal, in the end."
