It had been a long, harsh winter for Duer and he couldn't wait for spring. He checked eagerly each day for a sign, any sign that winter's grip was loosening and spring was on her way. Each day he was disappointed, but he didn't allow that to get his spirits down or deter him. Spring would come and he would rejoice when he found it.
It wasn't that he didn't like winter. He didn't mind it actually. He just liked spring better and by now he was getting tired of the snow and the cold. Plus spring was just a lot more interesting with flower buds and baby animals abound. It was a lot less lonely, and he liked to hear the birds sing.
You see, a long time ago Duer had gotten separated from his parents and sister. He'd looked for them for a long time, but eventually he just gave up. It seemed pointless. Now he just wandered by himself, alone.
Or mostly alone. Sometimes he ran into other horses, like today with this mare.
"Hello," he said, wasting no time approaching her. "How are you?"

Calamity Jane looked up with a mouthful of dried grass, the stallion that approached had startled her. She chewed and swallowed quickly, ducking her head back down to hide this. She glanced back up, "H-hi..."
Why was it that she was isolated right up until she decided to find some food. Then the handsome stallions all start showing up. Such was her luck...

Duer didn't seem to notice anything wrong. He smiled widely at the mare, just pleased really to have found some company. It'd been a while, and she looked pleasant enough.
"My name is Duer. I hope I'm not intruding on your breakfast!" he breezed easily, taking a few steps closer to her.

"Calamity Jane. And uh, no, not at all!" Blinking, she wondered how on earth she'd missed his approach. You could see for miles around here.
"What brings you to this part of the plains?"

"Oh, I'm glad to hear that," Duer grinned, his ears flicking forward excitedly. If he was less in control of himself, he likely would have pranced. "I wouldn't want to disturb you."
"It's nice to meet you, Calamity Jane. I was just out for a walk, getting a breath of fresh air. What were you up to?"

"Much the same." And looking for food, but I get the idea saying that might scare you off, she added mentally. "Where are you from? I don't think I've seen you before." Indeed, thinking back, the only other naturals she could remember were family.
