"This way, Gula!" Lycoris called, bounding up the shallow rise in the land with all the enthusiasm of an excitable antelope calf. "It's not far now!" And, sucking in a breath, she called out: "Daaa~aaad! We have a visitor!" It was highly unlikely that she'd learn the importance of being quiet very fast. Teaching her to hunt might be more work than the adult female had realised.

Still, she was keen and certainly energetic, you had to give her that.

The dark pelted pup skidded to a halt in front of a tangle of brambles and gave a short string of yips. A second later and the foliage rustled...

...and a long, dark snout poked out from the leaves and vines, followed by a pair of purple eyes and two large ears that unfolded the moment his head was free of the thorns.

Smiling, the adult male's tongue lolled as he pulled himself into full view, lowering his head briefly to nuzzle his daughter's ears. Then, eyes turning upwards to look at Gula he grinned wider, tail wagging. "Hello! Who's this, then?"

"She's my friend!" Lycoris declared.

"Oh! Well! Nice to meet you!" And, with father and daughter standing side by side, the similarities in their markings were almost exactly alike. Their personalities were not too different, either

Gula followed after the furry little ball of energy. The whole way up, she had a big grin on her face. Lycoris had this energy about her that was entirely too contagious. The innocence of being a pup and the ability to be one was what probably made it so. She couldn't recall a time when she was so innocent, trusting, or enthusiastic about something.

She had a feeling that it would be a real task to teach the pup how to hunt. Nikan was much quieter but didn't seem as, how could she put it? He just didn't seem to have as much drive as Lycoris did. Maybe they could learn from each other.

Gula stared at the brambles that the pup yipped at. When it rustled, she stepped back slightly. She had not survived this long by not being cautious. It wasn't long before a male hyena revealed himself. Yep, he certainly was Lycoris' father. They looked nearly the same and she had a deep sense that they acted the same too.

Since she never had a father around as a pup, she couldn't really judge. At least he was sticking around and caring for Lycoris. With that thought, she smiled back at him. "Nice to meet you too. You did a fine job of raising this one. I hope you don't mind me staying with your family. Lycoris told me it would be fine."

Kimaria
Sure thing! Thanks for starting it. <3

If Marakl was surprised, he certainly didn't show it. In response to Gula he simply bobbed his snout in agreement and lifted his ears. "Of course not! The more the merrier! Kalpana will be happy to have someone new to talk to, as well." He eyed Lycoris. "And the other pups." His tail wagged harder.

"My name's Marakl! But you can call me, Mar, if you like."

"She can hunt, dad!" Lycoris interrupted. "She's going to teach me!"

The male hyena looked a little sheepish at that, though it was only a momentary shift. "I...tried to teach them but...I never learned. We did find a good carcass the other day, though." He grinned. "Come on. We'll show you through to the den site. The others are out at the moment." Kalpana and the pups would no doubt be back later.

With a squeal, Lycoris dived into the undergrowth and Marakl stepped after her, using his body to push the thorny brambles aside for Gula to get through. "After you."

Gula couldn't help frowning a little. The father was entirely too trusting too. It would just take a clever hyena to get close to Lycoris, be nice to the dad, and then do something horrible. If they were trusting of other species, that would be even worse. She didn't want to examine her thoughts too closely because she was already feeling an attachment to the little pup in front of her.

She nodded at their words. "Thank you for having me. I'm Gula. I'll be sure to pay you back during my stay."

They were both easy to like. The smile on her face was genuine and a touch sad as she thought of all that she had missed as a pup. This was what a real family was like. It almost made her cry. As it were, she was tearing a bit even as she smiled.

"And a gentleman," she commented as Marakl held the brambles aside for her. That made the tears disappear quickly. She ducked into their den with many thoughts filling her head.

Kimaria
That cat in your sig is so cute! <3 The white part makes it look like it's smiling. ^^

Gula might find out sooner rather than later that they were very trusting of other species. Marakl's best friend and the pups' 'aunt' was a wild dog and Marakl had even been raised by a wild dog and a lion when his mother had abandoned him as a pup. And, so far, this trust had not put them in any danger. Not yet, anyway.

"No payment necessary!" He declared. "We're always glad to have others around. Travelling is wonderful but it can sometimes get lonely. We have our own little pack here but nothing like what I've heard some hyenas are used to. We passed by a big pack recently, in fact, and managed to speak to some of the members. There was a whole group of them altogether! Except...they didn't like Kalpana all that much." His ears drooped and he even whined a little at that.

Still, he smiled at her and padded after her.

The den itself was one that had once belonged to a much smaller creature that they had widened when they realised they would need to stay put, nestled beneath some wind-roughened rocks. It wasn't a great spot, but so far they had been left alone. By the looks of how Lycoris was growing, too, it wouldn't be too much longer before they could be on the move again.

"It's a bit small but its comfortable enough."

"Except some rain came in." Lycoris chirped. "My brother got a big drop on his nose."

Marakl nodded. "A bit of rain never hurt anyone, though."

"It was funny." The hyena pup smiled.

"Are you hungry?" Marakl asked Gula then. "We still have some of that carcass left."

Thank youuu! He is a very happy boy! Also sorry for the wait on this. Weekends always tend to be a bit hit and miss with me but this one was particularly busy.

There was no knowing how Gula would react once she realized just how trusting this family was. As it were, she was rather clueless about the whole situation and just took it in as it came to her. Looking around the den made her realize that this family may not have the means to fight off any other predators. It was small to her. Of course, she never really stayed in one place for too long. She didn't want her scent to be linked to any one area where she can be tracked down. Perhaps her puphood had made it impossible for her to really trust anything long enough to put roots down.

She nodded at his words, a smile creasing the fur around her eyes. "It does get lonely. Still, I wouldn't want to take without giving." She wouldn't like it if she extended a welcome to someone and all they did was use her so she couldn't do the same.

There was true concern on her face when he mentioned how the hyena pack they ran into didn't like one of their kind. She didn't know he spoke of a wild dog. "Maybe you should stay clear of that pack. Not all hyenas will be friendly like me. Though I am more open to pups than to adults initially."

Gula smiled at their chattering. They really were family, not just in looks but in actions. At least there were parents out there who didn't abandon their pups.

She shook her head at the offering. "No thank you. I had a bite to eat before this so I'm not all that hungry. Besides, your growing family needs it more than I do. Pups have to eat a lot to grow big." The last part was said with a cheerful look at Lycoris.

Kimaria
No problem. This past weekend was super busy for me too.

The family could probably do with learning a bit of caution, especially whilst a good portion of them were still small enough to act as a tasty snack for another predator. Still, it would probably take a tragedy like that for the little family to truly believe that someone out there might be happy to hurt them.

Marakl nodded, tongue lolling. "Well, your help wouldn't be turned aside if it was offered." After all, it wasn't every day that someone met a hunter like Gula and had the opportunity to learn from her. Perhaps he would attend the hunting session and see if he could pick up a trick or two! Wouldn't Kalpana be surprised if he did!

"Yes. That pack wasn't very friendly. I don't know why they didn't like Kalpana. She's never been anything but a friend to me and I've known lots of other species - all just as friendly. Being judgemental like they were...it isn't right. I won't ever join a pack if that's how most of our kind view the world." His ears drooped and his daughter came nudging up against her leg.

"I'm going to grow very, very big!" Lycoris agreed. "But no eating yet. When will we go hunting, Gula?" Her eyes widened. "If I have to go and get Nikan you won't all leave without me, will you?"
