It had been a very long time since Cordelia had any kind of contact with Lucia, so it was a little surprising when the cat Raevan had called out of the blue asking to hang out. Surprising, yet welcoming. The basilisk had been wanting to get out of the house as of late, even despite it being winter, and meeting a friend somewhere was just the excuse she was looking for.
Fast forward a couple hours later and Delia was standing outside a cafe in Durem called Scrumptious, a place Rivener had recommended to her via text. Though she was still only a Frei and didn't ever really have the need or want to ingest human foods and beverages, Cordelia was still up for experimenting. Besides she figured since Lucia was a Sigel now that the girl might be up for grabbing a bite to eat before venturing on to some other activity in Durem.
Cordelia rubbed her gloved hands together as she shrank deeper into her scarf and warm layers. She had another excuse for coming to Durem. There was something out in this direction that was calling her, but she still couldn't figure out what it was yet. She hoped that if she continued to explore the city that maybe she'd somehow stumble upon whatever it was that was calling to her. If she was lucky, she might find it today and finally put her questions to rest.

A few minutes ago Lucia had entered the cafe Cordelia had mentioned to her. She had pulled of her hat (it had cat ears on it while she folded her own ears underneath for warmth) and let her mittens dangle from the string that was slipped through her jacket sleeves. She was constantly losing mittens in this cold weather, but, taking a leaf out of the book of kids' gloves, had sewn a string to each so she could thread it through her sleeves and never worry about losing one glove again. If she was going to lose them, Lucia was determined to lose the pair.
She got in the long line. College kids cramped up the cafe, all seeming to be on cell phones, iPads, laptops, or some other divice. The cafe was pretty loud, but it smelled amazing. Various flavors of chicken sandwiches, salads, and all types of hot and cold drinks (mostly teas and coffee) were listed on the menu.
She floated in line, listening to the various conversations about classes, professors, boys, girls, parties, college sports, bands, and other things. Smiling and eyes lit up, Lucia floated towards the cashier. "I'll have the five-pepper chicken salad, a medium chocolate and chili powder coffee, and a water bottle," Lucia said once it was her turn. She paid and waited for her meal.
Finding an empty two-person table, she set her food down and leaned against the chair's back. This weather sucks, she thought, pulling off her thick plush and fashionable jacket. She glanced towards the door repeatedly, waiting for Cordelia to come in.

If the snake had feet she'd be hopping from side to side as most people do when having to stand outside in freezing temperatures for longer than a couple minutes. Instead she was swaying a bit erratically and hugging her arms as close to herself as possible. It was starting to garner more stares than just being a half body usually did since it sort of looked like Cordelia was dancing instead of just being cold while waiting. Where the hell was Lucia?!
Finally reaching her tolerance for cold, Delia rushed inside the cafe behind a group of less bundled up humans. Sighing with relief, the girl patted her cheeks to get that cold blood moving again. Floating to the side and out of the way, she'd never seen so many people crammed into one little place before, Cordelia looked down at her phone. It was well after their agreed meeting time and no messages. As the daughter of a Shade, this ticked her off immensely. A few minutes late is forgivable, but more so and said late party should at least have the decency to call or text to say they were going to be late or at the most apologize.
Yanking her gloves off and stuffing them into her coat pockets, Cordelia's fingers furiously began typing out a text to the late Raevan. She was so concentrated on crafting just the right balance of understanding and annoyance via words that she hadn't seen the guy with his arms full of hot coffee trying to carefully maneuver through the sea of people. Everyone was so busy trying to avoid him that they ended up shoving into the persons next to them. Cordelia unfortunately got caught up in this whole mess and her phone went flying out of her hands and skidding under a table a few feet away. Absolutely speechless and horrified, her guardians would be furious if she lost/broke that phone, the basilisk hurried after it, failing to notice whom was seated at that particular table right then.

Lucia smiled brightly when she saw her friend come inside, but was a bit confused when she didn't float right over. Instead, the frei turned her back towards her and focused on something in her hands. She lightly tapped her fork on the side of the plate of salad, watching as Delia typed quickly into her phone. The kitten nodded, understanding. She must have been talking with someone through texts and it was important. That was the only thing Lucia could think of that would make her lateness okay. She knew what it was like to get caught up in a conversation.
She turned back and took a bite of chicken into her mouth. It was juicy, spicy, and really flavorful. The peppercorn ranch dressing on top set off the flavor really nicely, adding a bit of sweetness. She glanced at Cordelia again and was watching the scene roll out almost in slow motion. Her friend didn't see the guy. He didn't see her friend. Everyone was stepping back without glancing behind them and Delia was unaware.
The phone, it looked pretty expensive, slid across the tiled floor and hit the leg of the table where Lucia was sitting before stopping at the buckle that adorned the end of her ribbon. She flapped her wings once and leaned to the side and forward to grab the phone. Hands, not her own, came into view and beat her to picking it up from the floor. Lucia looked up and just smiled as she saw her friend for the first time in a long while. "Here you are!" she said after righting herself and once Delia's head was clear of the table.

It was really hard to get at things on the floor under other things when you couldn't bend or stoop down like humans and other creatures. Thus Delia had to pretty much launch herself under the table as she was floating towards it to get down there without the trouble that sometimes could come with being a half body. Her aim was pretty good and she made it under with only a little skidding. Even better, the extra speed she'd picked up from her launch had actually allowed her to beat another person to her phone.
Cordelia was just coming up and about to apologize to the person seated there when the other blurted out 'here you are!' She blinked once and looked between her phone with the awaiting text message and the cat Raevan in front of her. Taking note of the food and such, "Wait...you were inside this whole time? Uggghhhh!" The basilisk's body went limp in mid-air as her head rolled up to face the ceiling in defeat. "I feel like a complete idiot for not thinking of that. I froze my ribbon off waiting out there for nothing!" The girl grumbled some more as she slid into a chair across from her friend, folded her arms and promptly placed her head into them face down. This was precisely the reason she hated the cold, well one of the other reasons that is, it made her slow and that included her thought processes as well.

Lucia's eyes went wide at he friend's mini rant. The corners of her mouth twitched and she tried to bite the inside of her cheeks and purse her lips to keep the giggle from escaping. Delia was obviously distraught. The situation wasn't funny. But it was. They were each waiting for the other. And the argument Cordeila was having through texts must have been to her own phone. Her teeth peeked from between her teeth and bit her lower lip to keep her smile away.
She looked at her friend with, hopefully, sympathetic eyes and floated her warm body over to her, pressing her torso as much against her as possible (while avoiding her wings) and rubbing her hands along the girl's arms. Her body was much warmer, having been inside. It wasn't a heat lamp, but her internal temperature was always around the same as a cat's: 101 to 102 degrees fahrenheit.
She pressed her cheek against the back of her friend's head. "Sorry. I didn't think to text you to let you know I was here."

She knew Lucia was just trying to help by comforting her, but it was hard to get that feeling when all Delia could feel was her friend shaking against her back, trying desperately to keep her laughter from spilling out. It couldn't be helped though, she supposed if their roles had been reversed then she would have thought it pretty damn funny as well. Thus the only thing Cordelia could do was sigh in half defeat, half content as the excess warmth from the cat was much appreciated after the chill of the outside air.
Peeking her face out to the side of her arms, the snake pouted and replied, "No, it was partially my fault as well. I don't think so well when I'm cold, sorry." Once Lucia let her go and returned to her own seat, Delia lifted her head completely up, yet only to prop it with her right hand. "Sooo...what's up? I was kinda surprised to hear from you today." Cordelia's silver eyes went wide when she realized how that might have sounded and she quickly added, "That's not to say I didn't want to hear from you or that I'm use to not hearing from you, I mean, I mean...ugh!" Finally conceding to her inability to be articulate today, Delia laid her head on the table again, this time chin touching the surface and arms hidden well under the table. "I'm sorry. How about you talk now."

"Well it's warm in here!" Lucia said, happy Delia was doing more than just castigating herself. She moved back to the seat and -yum!- her food. She speared some chicken on her fork and lifted it up. The spices were clearly visible and, honestly, smelled just awesome. Her fork hung in midair, forgotten though, once Delia began to talk.
"Alright, let's breathe," she said, not remembering her friend being so high strung. Someone ate her Wheaties. Or had extra coffee. Or... "D'ya eat yet? Or drink?" she asked. But her question was just as silly, so she covered it up by offering her the fork and gesturing with her other hand to the awesome sweet and spicy coffee concoction. Yeah; just offering a bite or drink. Not wondering if you ODd on a stimulant or anything.
"To answer your question," she said, looking thoughtfully at the frei, "I just haven't seen you for a while, and I figured we could catch up." She shook her head, pigtails flopping as she was looking around a bit. "Delia, have you ever gone to school?"

Of course she wasn't on anything, just upset from having been in the cold too long and because of it bumbling through a conversation like she was some new born Frei. Cordelia shook her head at the offer of food and drink, the smells weren't exactly enticing to her at the moment, but she did need something if she was going to kick the fuzzies from her head then.
"Nah I'll pass on the human food, but if you don't mind, the steam from your drink should be enough to help clear my head at least." With a grateful look, the snake gently wafted the steam in her direction and lightly breathed it in. It wasn't smoke, but it would do for now or at least until she got warmer.
Like a person with a cold who could finally breathe, Delia sighed in relief. "Mmmm...school? As in school school? Like with humans and such? No, but I mean in my family it's like tradition to be home schooled." The girl laughed, already seeming in better spirits. "Why do you ask? Are you going to one? Isn't that hard seeing as we develop faster than most human children?" Cordelia couldn't completely suppress the look of disgust she got when she thought about having to hang out with a bunch of human kids. Thank the heavens for home schooling.

"Naw. I mean, I study a lot at home, but I kinda want to know more. I bought these textbooks, like for college, but I almost think I wanna try school. There's a reason why these professors are paid to teach, ya know?" Lucia looked down at her fork and pulled off the piece of chicken.
She pulled back her drink, taking a sip before placing the mug before Cordelia to let her absorb the steam. The coffee still had that jolt that came with every caffeinated drink, but the chocolate was sweet-tasting and the chili gave it a spicy kick. All in all, just awesome. She hmmed a little as she swallowed. The extra milk she always added made it so smooth too.
But Lucia smirked at the scornful look Delia got when talking about humans. She got it, really. Traditional age would put her in kindergarten. Maybe. She'd be five soon. But that didn't really matter, since she could easily get a GED.
Really, though, that wasn't the purpose of meeting her. The location sparked the thoughts, but it was a side idea. Maybe someone would take a class with her... "But that was just something I was thinking, since we're here. But what's been up with you?" She smiled kindly to her friend.

Cordelia leaned back in her seat and gave a look of distant, yet serious thinking. That's right. Since they didn't look like grade schoolers and obviously didn't act like such after a good year or two, depending on development, Raevans could just enroll at a college if they wanted. After all, she knew a lot of Raevans that actually did paying jobs, Lucia included. College would be just like that. Well except you pay them instead.
The basilisk sighed, a bit in frustration and some in longing, realizing that perhaps she was still too young to go to college as well. All the working Raevans she knew were Sigels after all and college just seemed right up there with that. Yet it begged the question, why were all her close friends so much older than her anyway?
"College could be fun. Since we're here we should look around if you're thinking of going to one even if it's not this one." Idly twirling a strand of black hair with her finger, "Mmm...me? Well I guess a lot and then again not a lot." Delia gave a chuckle. She honestly couldn't remember when she'd last talked to Lucia and what about. "Still doing the violin thing...got a phone finally, obviously, computer too. Oh that reminds me I'll have to give you my email address sometime today too. Ummm...Ebby got a new job, oh and my grandfather moved in with us not that long ago. He's pretty cool. Likes to fiddle around with all kinds of tech and such in the basement. Something blows up down there from time to time and then Ebby blows up. It's pretty funny when she lectures him." The Frei stifled a laugh this time and asked, "What about you? How's Yuurei?"

"Yeah!" Lucia said, suddenly excited. She began finishing her food quickly in order to look around the campus with her friend. She had just been thinking about it -- attending college. It was a vague notion that she hadn't really delved into. But it suddenly became a fun idea, something that she could do, and something that she might really like.
She wanted to finish her food first though, and swallowed before responding to Delia. "Sounds like you've had a lot of fun," she replied a grin on her face. "I mean, new family, new hobby, adventures, even if it's just watching your family." She smiled at her before continuing.
"Yuu's okay. Flighty, not really there, but she makes sure I'm okay, which is her job I guess." The kitten shrugged. "I'm kinda bored. I've had a few different jobs, but nothing really stuck, ya know? I keep going from one thing to the other. I'm hoping I'll find something I really like studying."
Finishing her food, she put all of her garbage in a bag the gave her and grabbed her drink. "Wanna walk around?" she asked, floating up.

"Uh, sure." Honestly Cordelia was dreading going back outside so soon. To most people it probably wasn't that bad, but to her it was twice as cold since she had to live off the heat of others or things like fire or the sun. But maybe it wouldn't be as bad this time since she would be with Lucia (of whom she could make sure to stay very close to) and they'd be moving around more.
Sucking it up, the serpentine Raevan floated after her feline friend. Not able to suppress a huge shiver the moment the cold air of outside hit her skin, Delia made quick work of fishing her gloves back out and stuffing her hands in them. "So do you just want to walk around aimlessly from building to building or do you have somewhere specific you'd like to go to? Like any departments of study you're specifically interested in?"

Lucia looked at Delia and bit her lip. "Maybe we can go over to the admissions building? See what I need to do to apply. Maybe go on a tour," the cat said with a shrug. She figured they could look around. Give it some purpose, get some information, and it would help her -- and maybe Delia would decide to go with her.
The door swung open and she noted just how cold her friend seemed to be. Her jacket was warm from her body heat and the store itself. She slid it off her shoulders and offered it to Cordelia. "Here," she said, "take it. I'm warm." She was, too. She was usually fine outside. As much as she adored warm spaces and laying out in the living room in front of the fire place, lounging in the warmest room of the house, right by the heating vents if she could, she retained heat well. It was just a luxury thing. So handing her coat to her friend who was obviously cold before they even stepped out wasn't a big deal.
