Almost everyone in Hafwen's class at Crystal Academy were ranting and raving about the Sugar Shanty as of late. The incessant whisperings of the huge candy collection it carried and, not forgetting, the rather dashing and affable redhead male who was always more than happy to patiently listen to his customers' preferences before making a couple of recommendations as to what they could opt for.

Hafwen was skeptical of course, all too aware of how skewed a besotted young maiden's opinions could potentially be whenever a dashing gentleman was involved in situations such as these. Yet it would seem that a visit to said candy shop on her part was unavoidable when her bestie Mercy asked her out of the blue if she had ever heard of it or tried some of the rock candy from there before at their last tea party.

Checking the address she had jotted down on a slip of paper and the store front to ensure that she had the right place, the young teen took a deep breath then pushed the door open prior to walking in. She was here strictly on business so she would do what she got here to do by getting some candy for Mercy and herself to sample and then she would be out of here, dashing gentleman or not.

The color of the day was blue, obviously. Blue was the color of the sky on this wonderful day, blue was the color of the apron he wore (originally, it was an off white, but he had gotten a little too close to the blue raspberry food coloring for his next batch of taffy), and apparently, blue was the color of the fabulous locks of the young girl that just walked into his store. Yes, blue seemed to be the color of the day, and like the Cookie Monster being presented a plate of cookies just beyond his reach, Richard Moreau could not help but take a gander at the newcomer walking in.

She was a young little scamp, much too young for him, even at first glance, but that did nothing to detract from her charm or beauty. The uniform was familiar to him and he immediately suspected that she might have been there based on the recommendation of her fellow Crystal Academy students (it appeared he had gained a reputation, and why not? His candy and charm were meant to ensure happy and returning customers). But of course, she was young, and that was dangerous territory, to be eyeing such a darling, likely half his age.

But of course, since when did Richard stray from danger? There was nothing wrong with a little harmless flirting, right? He merely had to tread the waters with caution, though not to where it took away any of his fun... luck had a delicate balance and Richard liked to think that he was king of cats when it came to luck.

"Welcome to Sugar Shanty," Richard said, pulling away from the taffy station and taking only a moment to make himself presentable. The gloves and apron were removed, quickly and efficiently, and no sooner had they landed on the counter was he standing before Hafwen. There were other customers there, but she and her cotton candy like hair simply demanded his full attention for now. "How may I tickle your sweet tooth today?"

Had it really been that long since Hafwen last indulged in her sugar craving? Standing in the middle of the Sugar Shanty, she found herself momentarily lost from the vast expanse of sugary treats displayed in their respective transparent receptacles on the shelves, for once perplexed as to how exactly she should go about accomplishing her original mission that had brought her to the shop in the very first place.

Sure she was here to get Mercy and herself some candy, but she definitely didn't want to just get anything for the sake of the act and possibly purchase something that wouldn't suit both their palates. As it stood, it probably might have been quite awhile if the only candies she knew of back in her elementary school time were limited to lollipops and candy canes and as much as she was loathed to admit it, she was in fact rather relieved when Richard approached her to offer his assistance.

"Could you show me some of your shop's best sellers please?" When lost, always start with something that most other people would go for. Can't go too wrong with that kind of approach. She figured, lifting a hand to tuck some of her tresses behind an ear before smiling brightly at the older male. No way was she going to admit outright that she was hopelessly lost in his shop and didn't know what she should buy. She just happened to be in the mood for something different today.

Yup, she could roll with that.

Business as usual, Richard thought, when the girl looked his way and kept her polite smile forward, and despite knowing how dangerous the territory would be with this young one, it only made it all the more desirable for Richard. While he certainly wouldn't have lured her into his bed, he could imagine giving her a ride in his Lexus, and the thought of her gorgeous blue locks blowing in the wind was almost enough to stiffen the business side of him,

Almost.

'Business before pleasure.' Richard told himself as he stood before her, and without missing a beat, he cast his gaze towards the left, revealing to her the wide variety of jelly beans, sorted by color and flavor. Very orderly, as though someone had taken the time to place each individual one in its respected place, despite the children that tried their best to ruin his hard work. "Jelly beans are always a best seller, I find. With every bite, it's like putting a magic lamp in your mouth- unbelievable cosmic taste, within an itty bitty bean-shaped space."

Yes, he had pretty much quoted an old Disney movie, but it seemed like the best comparison he could make. He smirked at his own humor, but tried not to get too carried away, as he pointed to the aisle towards the back. "And of course, there's a lady's best friend and ever constant companion, and sometimes her spouse's salvation: Chocolate. My favorite is the chocolate caramel with a touch of sea salt..."

His quiver wasn't an act. He really loved that stuff.

The good old jelly bean. Why was she not surprised? Hafwen mused to herself as she glanced in the direction that Richard had directed his gaze to and was promptly given a visual treat for her effort with the assortment of colours that they all came in. "A timeless classic beyond any doubt." Only she would know if she was making a reference to the Disney movie the quote had come from or the jelly beans themselves with her comment. Perhaps she had been alluding to them both at the same time?

She made no move towards them to take a closer look though, obviously not finding them suited for her intended purpose until what he proposed next managed to pique her interest some. "Chocolate caramel and sea salt..." It was an interesting combination really. Who would have thought of coming up with something that was both sweet and salty yet would appeal to the masses at the same time? "Would it be possible for me to sample some of that please?"

Sorry for taking so long to tag back~ orz Hafwen says she is totally open to the idea of having a willing sugar daddy though. *shot dead* xd

Richard was pleased to see Hafwen's interest in the chocolate caramel, and he was only too eager to offer such a beautiful young lady a free sample. Of course, he always offered free samples to anyone, so long as they weren't rude, or overly disgusting, or at least had intentions of actually purchasing something and weren't just using him for a quick sugar fix (he couldn't count how many had wandered into his store just for that... and it felt good to catch one of those ungrateful loafers in the act and kick them out. Sully his hospitality? Never again!)

But Hafwen had the fortunate luck of being a very, very beautiful young girl, and appearing earnest, and never wanting to chase away such an honest and beautiful creature, Richard was more than happy to oblige. He motioned for the young lady to follow him towards the chocolate aisle, and the temperature in this section of the store was purposefully lower than the rest, for multiple reasons. Mostly it was to keep his chocolate cool (as knowing was more shameful to a business man than selling melted candies, especially chocolates), but the other reason was a little more... naughty. Young this Hafwen may have been, but that didn't mean he couldn't look.

"Right this way. I have various sizes, but I'd highly recommend the squares." Richard pulled a pair of clear disposable gloves from the dispenser and a napkin before he pick a piece from the proper compartment, handing it to Hafwen with a smile. His eyes made sure to cover two areas, her gorgeous face and the bosoms that decorated that chest of hers. With those uniforms, it was always hard to get a good idea of was hidden under them, but the coolness in the air would help with that, surely. "I also have other flavors, if you so desire..."

Like the witch giving Snow White the apple, Richard waited, patient yet eager all at once.

Moving to follow Richard's lead and still blissfully unaware of the far from innocent thoughts that ran through his mind with regards to what he thought of her, Hafwen couldn't help shivering a little from the dip in temperature in this section of the store, her arms reflexively crossing over her chest to rub at the goosebumps that had come up on the exposed part of her arms.

It was cold but she couldn't jolly well complain about that since it didn't exactly take a genius to figure that it had to be so, lest the chocolate stored here became melted or degraded to a less than satisfactory quality before it was even sold to a potential customer like herself. "If I may ask, why specifically the squares?"

Noting the way with which the redhead retrieved the chocolate prior to handing it to her, Hafwen had to admit that she was somewhat impressed at least. It wasn't every day that she stepped into a candy store that handled its wares with such care and attention to ensure that there was a certain level of hygiene maintained in a process as simple as this. There wasn't any doubt in her mind by this point that she was going to purchase something by the time she walked out of here. The only question that remained was what.

Paying little attention to where the older man's eyes appeared to linger a couple of seconds longer than was necessary to pass her the sample, she popped the chocolate into her mouth and held it there, waiting for it to gradually melt so that she could slowly savour the flavours it contained within. "Mmm... this's really good. Are there any other flavours that you will recommend for my consideration too?"

"Why squares? Simple! A square is a rectangle with four equal sides, correct? By disputing the chocolate into four equal sides, you get a geometrically even piece of chocolate, which makes distributing whatever filling one may desire in a fair and even manner for all of the customers to indulge in," Richard said, his mind off of her own perverted fantasies and jumping onto his love for chocolate and candies in a heartbeat. Why, he was so caught up in his explanation that he completely forgot to look at her chest and torso when she accepted the chocolate, and once his mouth was running, there was simply no way of stopping it. "It's all about equality and even distribution, dear. You see, some people, especially little children, get upset when they think someone else received more than them and if a customer thought I was holding out on them, then not only is my business affected badly, but the customer's trust is forever broken and once that happens, getting them back would be near impossible!."

He curled his fist, a sign of passion, and at least he had managed to hand off her sample piece before he ended up crushing it and wasted his hard worked chocolate and sea-salt caramel (something he'd regret with such a passion that it would have likely lead to him to fleeing in the back and breaking into his not-so-well hidden stash for the remainder of the day). "So I put all of my chocolate in little squares, all equal shape, size and dimension, to ensure that everyone gets their fair share. I make exceptions when making holiday themed candy, such as hearts or ginger bread man shaped ones, but those I painstakingly handcraft to perfect and make sure everything is equally distributed... as best as one could with a little human shaped piece, that is. That head is the hardest part!"

So passionate in his little tirade that he hadn't noticed that she had already devoured the piece he had given her and was questioning if he ever gave her a piece at all when he looked at her hands and saw it was empty. However, he did catch her question, and he had hoped that he didn't appear too flustered with himself as he tapped his chin and thought of another flavor that the girl might have liked. His mind was completely derailed from any dirty thoughts when it came to selling his product... "Hm, well, I have various ones with fruit filling- all natural fruit, of course and none of that artificial flavoring. I recently found out what was inside of artificially flavored raspberries, and it's enough to make you heave, so I won't tell you."

He eyed his boxes, pointing to some of the older Christmas themed ones that were left over and adding to the list for her. "I have nougat, hard caramel, soft caramel that's just dreamy, raspberry and not the artificial kind, blueberries, eggnog, spiced eggnog- no, you may not want that, unless you like a hint of liquor? Then there's marshmellow, cream, coconut, mint, but never together..."

The list could go on forever, and if Hafwen didn't stop Richard now, she may not have gotten the chance to again!

It was as if Richard was possessed when he started going into a lengthy discussion on the importance of ensuring that the filling that went into every piece of chocolate that he made was equal and hence fair after what seemed to Hafwen initially was an innocent question on her part about the shape of the chocolate. The hypothesized scenario that the redhead painted with his words was perhaps a little far fetched at some parts, yet she had to admit that she found it amusing in a way that someone would actually put so much thought and passion into a simple treat that took the form of candies and chocolates.

"You didn't say... so all the candy sold in this shop is made by you?" Came her next question with something akin to childlike wonder and curiosity reflected in her eyes as she allowed the edges of her lips to curl slightly in a smile. It now made a whole lot of sense why people would return to this store for its wares since they probably weren't available in other stores.

She was tempted to ask if he could show her, and perhaps Mercy on another occasion, how he made the chocolates - always an eye opener whenever the opportunity for some behind-the-scenes action ever presented itself - but she figured that he probably wouldn't be too keen on that if she made her request now so it would probably have to wait another time when she returned to get more candy as another regular customer. Pondering over her options as he recited a list of flavours that he had available, she rubbed her hands together in front of herself to warm them up some then made her request for another sample. "Could I try the raspberry next please?"

Richard hadn't even realized he was rambling until Hafwen interrupted him, and he was so into his task that he fought down the urge to snap at her for stopping him. He had so much more candy he could have told her about, but somehow, looking down at her and soaking in her question was enough to appease him. His desire to snap was gone, seen only in the subtle twitch of his eye before straightening up and focusing on her question.

"As much as I'd love to take all the credit, no. I do make the bulk of the candy, but I have a few employees that assist in the matter and add their own to the stock," Richard said, and he motioned towards the hard candy aisle. There was no hint of disdain or belittlement in his voice, at least none that he could hear though perhaps someone with a keener sense could have picked up on, as he explained. "The hard candies are Fred's specialty, and if you're into that, I'd recommend the cinnamon flavored ones. He's the one in charge of the lollipops for this Valentine's Day, so feel free to come by the store and I'll be sure to save you a few."

It was his way of saying 'I like you', and upon her request, he glanced at his stock and immediately plucked the flavor she desired, using the same care he had done for the salted caramel piece earlier and offering it to her. "However, everything else I either make or have a hand in its creation, but my specialty are the chocolates here, and taffy. Though, I prefer pulling the taffy more than I care to eat it... great in relieving stress, you know!"

"So some knowledge with regards to candy making is a job requisite for all of your employees? Isn't there any concern at all that some of them may take off with your recipes and start up a rival candy shop of their own?" The question had come naturally to Hafwen's mind the moment she took The Sugar Shanty's reputation and popularity into consideration. Surely the thought would have crossed most people's minds by now, especially if they saw for themselves just how potentially lucrative this particular business venture could be.

Oblivious to how narrowly she had just escaped from being snapped at by Richard himself, Hafwen looked in the direction that he gestured to, taking in the sight of the rows of hard candies that lined the shelves before returning her gaze to him, a soft smile spreading across her face at his kind offer to save some of the Valentines' Day lollipops for her. "Appreciate the thought if you could do that. I'll certainly have to drop by come Valentines' Day to get those and stock up on some of the festive specials you might have then."

The man was a shrewd businessman. That much she could tell by now. Besides, it never really hurt his business to chat up some of his customers so that he could learn more about their preferences and upon doing so, make sound recommendations that were more likely in tune with what they already enjoyed. A win-win situation for both parties involved. "You know... you're pretty good at this. I can't even decide which of the two chocolates I've tried should I go for now since they're both sumptuous in their own ways." She finally had to admit with a soft chuckle.

When she brought up the very rational concern about them running off and launching their own rival candy company, Richard could only outwardly smile at the thought. No, he knew it to be a possibility, especially if one of them kept making a habit of messing up his orders (though the thought of firing her permanently was far from his mind, given that she was more or less family now). He answered truthfully, "Yes, the thought has crossed my mind several times, but I try not to worry about it. After all, this -is- America, and they're allowed to pursue their own hopes and dreams as they see fit. However, if they do try to steal my recipes, then I will be more than happy to have my lawyer take care of it for me."

And he had a pretty damn good lawyer, considering she was on speed dial. He trusted his lawyer, perhaps a little more than any man should, but he felt that their 'relationship' was mutually beneficial to one another and he could easily butter her up. Not that he wanted to spend much time considering it now, as he had a customer to service and Hafwen was more than worthy of his full attention. When she admitted to being torn between the two, Richard took a moment to consider a little offer he could work up for her and came up with a decent one fairly quickly. He certainly didn't want her to leave the store empty-handed, even if it meant little change in his drawer.

"Well, how about this. Since you humored my little chocolate loving rant a few moments ago and you've been kind enough to test my chocolate for me, I can get a sampler bag set up for you to take home," Richard offered, even moving towards the clear plastic bags before she had the chance to reply. "I'm always eager to try new flavors, and you seem to have the palette I'd need. This one will even be on the house. What do you say?"

Who would turn down free chocolate? Ever?

"Very true indeed. If they believe that they can come up with something better on their own, a little competition for the customer's dollar shouldn't be much cause for concern since the better player will win ultimately." It was interesting to see for herself that running a business like The Sugar Shanty in Richard's case wasn't as simple as it seemed to be initially with so many elements to consider right from the production step to the personalized shopping experience tailored to the preference of every customer who walked through the entrance on a day to day basis.

What they had discussed rather briefly was by no means everything that the redhead had to take into consideration with regards to the running of the shop of course, but it provided a rare glimpse into the work behind the scenes nonetheless that Hafwen was thankful for. Wasn't everyday that an impassionate shopkeep would take time to share his experience with a customer like this.

The proposal of a sampler bag for her at the shop's expense had the blue-haired teen blinking a few times, a surprised expression on her face as she stared at Richard as if he had just sprouted another head between his shoulders before she made an attempt at a somewhat coherent response to his offer. "You... I mean... wow. Really?" The thought of having the chance to sample even more of the chocolates on top of the two flavours that she just had was enticing of course and while everyone knew that one should not readily accept such generosity from those whom you hardly knew without being wary of the possible strings attached, she couldn't help but go with it in the end.

"This is too kind of you. I can pay for this really or at least for a bag of the chocolate caramel and sea salt since it won't be fair to your other customers if I get such um... preferential treatment." There was a faint blush on her cheeks this time round as she offered to get a bag of chocolates that she could pay for at least. Granted that it was really nice of him to do something like this, she wasn't really sure if she was cool with walking out of the candy shop without buying something since that was what she had come for initially after all.

Richard knew that what he was doing wasn't necessarily proper and had seen the wisdom in Hafwen's concern. Giving preferential treatment to one customer or set of customers and not the rest could certainly cause a backlash in today's society, but it wasn't that Richard did it often (or at least, he didn't think he did it often enough). It was just something he wanted to do, to ensure that he'd get a customer to return to the store later and maybe bring a few more mouths and wallets along with them the next time. It was a strange method of doing business, but one that has favored him from time to time, and so he felt little concern when Hafwen offered to pay. "Nonsense. I treat all my good customers with the respect they deserve and reward the ones that I feel go beyond that. You've demonstrated a certain passion and curiosity to my business and therefor I'd like you reward you for that. Is that so wrong, to reward the outstanding few over the ones that barely put forth the effort?"

Perhaps it was- after all, most customers got agitated if they felt someone was being treated better than them, but as far as Richard was concerned, those customers weren't here. He finished placing the last of the samples in the back, still sticking true to his initial offer, though he couldn't see any fault in Hafwen's offer to pay, even if it was more or less to cover her own butt and not in fear of it hurting his business. He wouldn't think ill of her for doing what she felt was right, and that only made him want to reward her all the more. "But, you do make a point, and the fact that you are willing to pay for my goods still tells me just how much you really like them. So, since you insist on paying, how about I offer you this sampler bag for half off the cost of what a regular bag would be?"

He did the math real quick in his head, and he was certain he was off, but it would have short changed him instead, so he wasn't too concern. He was certain that he'd make up the loss come Valentine's Day, or through this one's sparkling reviews. "So, would $6.00 do? I can still shave off a dollar if that seems a bit pricey, though."

When Hafwen first walked into The Sugar Shanty earlier today to get herself some candy to share with Mercy, she expected that she would be done with her purchase within five minutes tops. After all, candy was, to put it simply, sweets in various colours and flavours so it wouldn't justify the need to spend a whole lot of time over something as straightforward as that.

Never did she anticipate that her encounter with Richard today would turn out to be an eye opener in addition to blowing all her preconceived notions out of the window like this. "Um... no. I have to admit that I'm kind of flattered that you will think of me in such a favourable light. I've really enjoyed what I've had the opportunity of trying so far thanks to your recommendation."

She really had to wonder if the shopkeep did this on a regular basis with all the new customers and not just her. Not that she would have any way of knowing unless she compared her own experience with some of the other girls in her class, but Hafwen wasn't the sort who would go to that extent for something as trivial as this. If the price and quality of his wares didn't quite match up, she wouldn't be dropping by as often was all.

Nevertheless, six dollars for a sampler bag of candy certainly was a steal with how many pieces he had in the bag and since he actually settled for a compromise by letting her pay for the sampler bag instead of having it for free, the most appropriate thing for her to do would be to agree to it as well, which was what she did with a cheerful grin lighting up her face. "Sounds good to me. I will definitely have to return for more when I'm eventually done with these. Would you happen to have a catalogue or some kind of printed guide as to what flavours are included in the bag as a reference?"
