Penwakani was splashing in the river. Despite the fact she was, well and truly, an adult now, it was still far too much fun to play in the water. She giggled to herself, enjoying the cold water on her fur considering the hot day. Yuuki was training, again, and so she was left to her own devices - which meant doing the most immature thing she could find.

Simple, but fun times always followed.

Pen grinned and dropped to her stomach, submerging herself in the cool stream, only to pop up moments later in a flurry of water and noise.

Gula was walking along, minding her own business. It was a rather lonely life she led but she knew no other way. Soon enough, the sound splashing reached her big ears. The last time she had heard splashing, it had been a little hyena pup playing around in the water. So she turned to head in that direction. Surely only a little one would be playing around in the middle of the day like that.

What a surprise it was when she saw that it was a lion. Shock, fear, and anger flashed across her face. She halted so suddenly that she nearly fell over, her body wanting to continue forward even though her mind told it to stop.

How dare that lion splash around like that? A grown one too! What if a pup had been attracted to it? It would have been vulnerable to the teeth and claws of the brown lioness that was splashing like nobodies business.

She cleared her throat loudly so the lion would hear her. If she lured the lioness away, then no pups that might be near would encounter them.

Penwakani did hear the cleaning of the throat, but didn't seem to understand the hyena's annoyance. Instead, as she shook her forelock to dispel the water that clung to it, and shake the hair free from her eyes, she grinned towards the hyena.

Ooh, she hadn't seen hyenas much in her time in the rogue land, which was weird, but perhaps they weren't as friendly as other lions were. Oh well, this one had come and found her. Surely they would be friends now!

"Hi!" she called out cheerfully. "Want to come in and play?" She was blissfully unaware of the hyena's rage.

Gula glared at the lion, clearly getting more annoyed by each second that went by. How dare the lion play innocent! She trudged into the water and pointed a paw at the lion's chest. "No, I don't want to play. Now I suggest you stop splashing around. Pups could hear you and then what? You'd snap them up in your jaws?" By the end of her little outburst, she was breathing so heavily that her chest heaved with each breath.

What kind of joke was this? A lion that wanted to play with a hyena. If she weren't so mad, she would have laughed. But this was no laughing matter.

Penwakani blinked in surprise as the hyena stormed over to her, but she didn't move back, as for a second she thought perhaps the hyena was actually going to play...but no. Not at all. Her ears drooped during the rant, before coming to look completely horrified.

"No!" she squawked. "I would never...how could anyone..." She became to look more and more distressed as she stammered. "I would never hurt a pup! Ever!" She stared at Gula, wide eyed. "I swear to you! I just...I just wanted to play..."

Gula didn't want to believe the lion even if her 'act' was quite convincing. It wasn't often one heard a lion squawk. She sniffed the air, sometimes you could catch the stench of a lie. This time, all she got was the distinct feeling that the lion was truly upset. She glared at the lion for a few moments, trying to decide if it was the truth.

It was some time before she slowly backed up to dryer ground to sit down. A puzzled expression twisted her muzzle. "Why would you want to play with me, a hyena?" This lion didn't look like the fighting type. If she were to be believed, she acted a little immature to begin with.

Pen watched the hyena as she took her time, thinking over Pen's response, and she desperately hoped the hyena would believe her. It took a while, but it seemed like the female did come to believe Pen's intentions were good, stepping back onto dry ground.

Pen stayed in the water though, not wanting to disturb the hyena, she stood dripping in the stream to answer the question. "My friend is busy," she explained, sheepishly, "and there is nothing for me to do around here, except either make my own games or talk to people, and there hasn't been another person around here in ages - except for you..." She glanced down. "I'm sorry if I disturbed you, miss, I was honestly just bored."

Gula pulled her head back with a perplexed look. The fur between her brows were bunched together in thought. Lions did not apologize to hyenas. Not for anything. At least not in her experience. This lioness went against all that she knew of them. Then she thought of that one lioness she encountered not too long ago that had not attacked her either. She remembered that one saying they were not good at fighting. Perhaps this one, too, was too weak to fight. That made more sense than a lion wanting to play with a hyena.

Gula sighed. She was very confused and had developed a slight headache. Mostly, she just didn't know how to respond. After more silence, she finally spoke up. "Tell me lion, do you treat everyone you meet this way? You ask them to play with you?" It was said with no menace, just questions. She needed to know the why behind the actions.

She tilted her head, silent for a moment as she considered the hyena's question. "Not everyone," she said quietly, and reluctantly. "Some people are quite cruel." She shuddered, remembering several encounters she'd had with very mean people. "Not just verbally cruel, but physically..." She glanced down at her water soaked paws and shook her head.

"But they are the exception. I don't think you should ever start off a meeting by being cold, I always try and be as welcoming as possible until someone has proven my kindness wrong." She glanced up at the hyena and offered her a shy smile. "I am sorry if I concerned or annoyed you - it was really just intended to be kind."

We can finish it up whenever you'd like. ^^

Gula narrowed her eyes at the lion. This one was weak. No wonder she only wished to play. If she were friendly to others, then they might feel bad about just attacking her. She knew first hand how cruel lions could be but she never realized they were like that to each other. Of course, she was merely assuming that the lioness was speaking of only other lions.

Now she was no longer angry. "I'm sorry I mistook your kindness as a ploy to lure me or pups." She was truly sorry and the apology was sincere. Her face softened to a hint of a smile to show that she meant it. "In my experience, lions only seek to hurt hyenas. It was out of concern that I confronted you."

Penwakani looked sorrowful at her words but nodded. "Not all lions wish to hurt you, but unfortunately there are some who do. The idea of hurting pups..." she shuddered, what a revolting thought! They were babies!

"I don't take offense," she said quietly, and shifted in the water, no longer eager to play but rather eager to just be alone for a while. Sometimes, she disliked her species...suddenly, she was rather eager for Yuuki's company.

"I'll let you continue on your journey," she said, and offered Gula a smile. "I'm sorry that I disturbed you, and I hope you a meanie-lion-free journey!" She shifted on her paws, waiting only long enough to be polite before fleeing, rather childishly, back to where she knew Yuuki, her sweet knight, would be waiting to protect her from all the meanies in the world.

Fin!

Gula had never been more confused in her life. It showed too. The skin between her brows was bunched in thought. There was a slight frown on her face as she watched the lioness flee from her, literally. Lions never fled from her, as if she were a menace. But before she ran, she had smiled. She shook her head. Perhaps thinking on it now would not be a good idea since it was so fresh.

She started to walk away but turned one last time to glance in the direction the lion ran off to. A sigh pushed air through her nose before she turned away. Perhaps this was a freak encounter but she was glad there was a lion unwilling to hurt pups.
