Hafwen was in quite a foul mood this evening and she knew it. What made it even worse was her awareness of its main contributing cause, yet not being able to do anything at all about it. It all started with the weird dreams she had been getting every other day for the past week. The ones in which she would find herself in an unfamiliar sandy landscape, wandering aimlessly beneath the scorching rays of the overhead sun until the alarm rang to wake her from her slumber, only to discover that she was at least as tired, if not more than back when her head hit the pillow the night before.
It wasn't as if she was getting these dreams out of the blue though, having had them on and off for the past 2 years so this didn't particularly alarm her or anything along that line. Still, it was kind of odd why they were happening so much more frequently as of late, not to mention the greater amount of details that seemed to linger in her mind as well when the previous dreams had been vague impressions at best. Not that they helped her in figuring out the exact significance of all these.
As it was, she was still thankful for small blessings like today being the end of a long week at school and the coach asking her to take a break from the soccer practice sessions this weekend since she looked almost as if she was about to collapse from sheer exhaustion. The last thing that the club needed right now was one of its regular strikers to catch the seasonal flu bug that was currently making its rounds or injure herself during practice on one of her not so stellar days.
Thinking that it would help save her some time, Hafwen had grabbed a sandwich to nibble on en route to her dorm. She wasn't really that hungry plus her top priority at the moment was getting herself to bed. With any luck, she might be able to get a fitful sleep tonight without any dreams and finally kick herself out of the funk that she was currently in. She was walking past the construction site situated 2 blocks down from the academy when it happened, the ropes suspending the makeshift wooden platform used to transport building materials snapped all of a sudden in mid air and sending its contents directly onto the blue-haired teen's intended path of travel.
Thud. Thud.
Oh joy, did it start shitting bricks from above now or what?
The heavy thudding sound made by the fallen bricks on the walkway before Hafwen had her instinctively looking up at the sky, her eyes widening at the horrific sight of yet more bricks and sand headed directly her way. And that was when she saw something that didn't quite seem to fit in the picture at all. A glowing soup ladle hovering in mid-air and just within reach between her and the falling objects.
There was only enough time to perform just one action until the bricks made impact, which came down to the option of either running like the wind in the hope of dodging them in the nick of time or grabbing the ladle, but it wouldn't make any sense at all for her to pursue the latter since it wasn't as if she could use the ladle to defend herself in this kind of situation. Or that was what she thought she had decided on when instincts ultimately won over logic, her fingers wrapping around the handle of the cooking utensil before she even realized what she was doing and then everything about her changed.
Within a flash of white light, she found her clothes gone and in their place an entirely foreign attire that she had never seen her entire life, natural reflexes kicking in next as she raised her arms above her head to shield herself before making a break for it. She only stopped when she was pretty sure that she had placed a safe distance between herself and the fallen building materials, panting to catch her breath as ceruleans stared incredulously at the silver ladle that was now in her hand.
Just what was the meaning of all this? If this was someone's idea of an April Fools' joke, it was too early for one and she was most definitely not amused at all!
