Perhaps it was just him, but the market seemed to be less busy than how it was when he was last in town. Then again, people were likely less willing to venture out due to it being winter. Not to mention the whole scare involving the wolves and whatnot. But, cold and wolves or not, Shane needed to pick up a few things for himself. His home didn't really have a great deal after having been away for years after all.

In any case, he was fine with it being like this. It meant the place was less crowded which was always something more favorable in his eyes.

It certain wouldn't hurt to have been a little warmer though.

Patia sat by her cart, with her fish, which were nice and fresh still thanks to all the cold. She was keeping a lazy eye on the market, pretending to scare off the kids from her cart, though she could really care less if a fish or two went missing. Kids had to eat, huh?

The old gypsy adjusted her shawl and looked around taking in the crowd. Lots of familiar faces, some she recognized from the town over but on in particular stood out. She made a soft humming sound in thought and squinted her eyes at him as if the sun was blinding her, which accentuated the wrinkles on her face.

"Hmmm." She rocked back on her stool some and then when she fell right off of it, she started gibbering in her old native tongue as she scrambled to her feet. With the sound of scuffling feet she turned to bark at some kids who had run off with a trout.

Shane was still making his way through, trying to find what he needed when he heard some shouting not too far off. It didn't take long for him to figure out what was going on here. From the looks of things, some kids had decided to steal some fish from an old fish vendor.

He considered letting it all slide figuring it didn't have much to do with him. Not to mention that he could remember growing up in these streets, hungry and the like as well.

But. Perhaps today he was feeling somewhat more generous than what he'd normally be. Seeing the kid with the fish bolting in his direction, he reached out to grab a hold of him to try and stop him. It was within his intent to drag the child back towards the cart briefly.

There was even more commotion as she noticed someone trying to intercede, which took Patia by surprise. She blinked a few times and adjust her skirt before making the trek to toward them. Really, Patia wasn't too upset, but more that she thought the kids had knocked out her stool to steal her fish more than stealing it in front of her.

"Hey!" She chirped as she got closer.

Keeping a hold of the kid, Shane nodded to the fish woman as she began to approach as well. This made things a little easier on his part considering how much the child was squirming to try and get away.

"How much is the fish?" he asked, motioning to the stolen good. His voice was calm and fairly neutral as he spoke.

She knitted her brow together a moment before rubbing at her chin, taking a moment to review the situation. However, she could feel the eyes of others one her, and while she usually didn't care, she didn't want everyone coming by thinking they could get free fish.

"That one? Hmmm, it's not a very nice lookin' fish." She seemed to murmur, though it was on the bigger side and quite fresh. "Probably won't get much meat off it, how about just a few coins?" ((AH! I don't know the currency here.))

She glanced to the boy who was struggling, and narrowed her eyes at him as if trying to see him better. "Hmm, and maybe a fishing trip or two on the boys part? If he's gonna take 'em, might as well learn how to catch 'em." Patia nodded sagely and placed her hands on her hips. Taking the boy with her would mean one extra set of hands, and a chance to teach someone something. Maybe he'd teach the others and they could have fishing parties and bring back so much fish!... that it could run her out of business... but she didn't fear that would happen.

With a nod, Shane reached for his coin pouch, struggling a little with the kid in hand, and passed over the payment. The fish was a nice looking one, but he wasn't about to argue over it. That part didn't really matter so much to him.

"Don't get caught next time," he warned the child with a stern look. Granted if he did learn to fish for himself, he probably wouldn't need to steal. Even so, things could go rather poorly if he wasn't more careful about how he went about it, especially once he was older. Today the child just happened to be a little luckier in his opinion.

In any case, he finally let the boy go.

Done with that for now, he looked over towards the cart the old woman had been tending to. He still needed some things for himself.

"How's the rest of your stock looking?"

Patia looked to the boy adn gave him a brief smile, she was sure to seee him again, before addressing the older male. "Ah, well, the rest of 'em look mighty good." She said pocketing the coins and waving him over. "Only fish. I don't hunt any more, can't move that fast." She said with a laugh, emphasiszing fast. She could move when she needed to, but her body was starting to grow older, and slower.

Once at the cart, she righted her stool and looked over the fish, there were about ten left, though she could see a few more were taken in all the excitment. The kids would be eatting well it seems, but she was sure she'd go find the boy and take him out to the river later in the week.

She smoothed out her clothes and straighted her hair up some. You couldn't ever hide the gypsy look though.

"What are you in the market for?"

Making his way over, Shane looked over the fish, raising a brow for the moment as he heard the old woman laugh.

"I was hoping for some fish actually," he said, "Along with a few other things."

For now the fish would do, however. The ones that were left were looking pretty good.. His last job paid pretty well so he could eat well for a little while.

"How much for the salmon?" he asked.

((Just made a guess of what she might have there. >_>; Lemme know if she doesn't actually have that.))

((Salmon it is!))

She glanced over the fish thoughtfully. Oh it had been a fun one to reel in, nice and fat too, sadly it was a female with eggs, but she haddn't realized it till she had gutted them (as she did for her customers) and found her eggs inside.

"10?" She offered. ((like ten dollars. I need to look into the currency after work)) "It's a rather good price for a nice big salmon." She said nodding a few times, her old eyes twinkling lightly at him in amusement

Shane considered the price to see if he needed to haggle it down at all. The salmon was big and plump from what he could see. With some bread and such it might be able to last him two meals. Or at least one big one. That was worth the price to him.

Nodding, satisfied with that, he counted out the proper amount and offered it over to the old woman.

"Do you come around here often?"

It was something to keep in mind for future visits perhaps. Red meats were nice and all, but he did have a preference for fish if he could afford it at the time. So finding a fish vendor who seemed to have some nice catches and good prices was something rather favorable.

She nodded as she counted the money and then put it away. "Yes. I go between the two towns. I live just out side of ol' castle." Patia nodded and held out her hand.

"Patia Lark, at yer service." Patia smiled with a broad grin. It might seem a bit surprising that the old woman traveled such a distance all the time, but it was her lively hood, and there weren't many fish in the forest...

His brow quirked at that. It was quite a trek for the old woman to be coming up to Palisade. But, being the bigger city, it likely also meant for better business, so he could see the reasoning for it. Even so, it was a bit impressive considering the old age she seemed to have.

"Shane," he said in turn, giving his own name after learning hers, "You seem rather spry for someone of your age."

She shrugged and got out some paper to wrap up the salmon with. "I am a woman who live alone, I have to be. The cold makes my joints ache a bit, but in the summer, I'm sure I could keep up with most others." Patia sealed off the packaging and handed it over to the man.

"Well, I do have help once in a while..." She smirked softly.

To those words, Shane merely nodded. it made sense. Even so, there was a fair bit of merit there. Taking the packaged fish, he thanked Patia quietly before eyeing her as she mentioned she had helped.

"Like from kids who end up getting caught stealing your wares?"
