J'len had not been well for several sevendays. Spending much of her time in the latrines, and more time sleeping, whatever ailed the crimsonrider did not go without notice. Despite the fact that she seemed to be eating little, she had put on weight. Noticibly. Her stomach poached out like the lip of a scolded weyrbrat. She had attempted to keep to her routine--Hyweth had put a stop to that. Four months prior, Hyweth had risen; and clutched successfully.

J'len's routine had been thrown out for sake of the clutch--and her own well being, though she was loath to admit any discomfort. J'nes had insisted she rest until her ankle was completely healed; she had. It had been further disrupted, then, almost directly after the hatching. She had been violently ill the day of the hatching feast. Whatever ailed her, she was certain it was J'nes' fault. Especially if she was right in her guess; a guess which J'nes seemed to not have made yet.

Berath, will you have yours come? Mine is ill still. Hatteth's cannot help. Yours can. Mine, she craves strange things at strange times. She does not eat much. She sleeps often. Do you know what is wrong with mine, Berath? Will yours know?

Berath raised her head, lifting a giggling weyrbrat up into the air. She still wasn't sure of where she stood with the breeding female, but the voice sounded friendly enough.

said the voice of her inner cynic, aka Bereck.

Berath ignored him for the time being and lowered her head again, before the creche worker had a fit. Half covered in children of various ages the green felt good, and being able to help another - even one she knew she had not always seen eye to eye with - would make her feel even better. she asked, simultaneously playing a wrestling game with three separate children using her forefeet and tail.

In the middle of a lecture Bereck paused and pursed his lips. Alina or Aleck would give him a Look (of different flavours) if they knew he was using a rest break to work but there was just so much work that he couldn't avoid it.

As long as I can remember. A sevenday or more, Hyweth's urgent, concerned response was immediate. She is pale. She vomits when food is present. Or the smell of food. Or when she thinks of certain foods--it is very troublesome. I do not know about her temperature. She is moody. Like-- the crimson hesitated. Hopefully the green wouldn't notice her almost slip. She preferred to be on good terms with Berath. Like a gold preparing to rise. Does he know, Berath? Or shall I continue giving symptoms? Will she get better?

Again the crimson paused. She seemed to be attempting to calm herself; at least, when she spoke again, her tone was calmer. Later is good. I will take care of her until then. Maybe Hatteth's will notice. I will help him notice. Hatteth's! Something is wrong with mine. You will stop walking around asleep, Hatteth's, and wake up. Something is wrong with mine. I have asked Berath to send hers to see.

J'nes was, at that moment, not in the hut he shared with J'len. She had been demanding bubbly pies, so he went off to the kitchen to see if he could get some. Unfortunately, there were none in the kitchen and they refused to make some, so he was returning with berries, biscuits and jam, and hoping J'len wouldn't fuss too much about the substitution. Or throw up again.

He was on his way back when Hyweth called him. I know she's not well, and I've been trying to get her to see a healer about it, but she doesn't like seeing them, he said to Hatteth to tell Hyweth. Still, if Bereck was coming, maybe J'len would consent to be examined. He picked up his pace, figuring it would be best to get there before the healer.

Soon after he entered the hut, expecting J'len to be there. She was generally either there or the latrines lately. "J'len? They didn't have any bubbly pies, but I brought you berries, biscuits and jam instead."

Berath replied right away, sensing the other dragon's worry in her voice and feeling deeply for her as she did for everyone. She had already said that but she truly did want to soothe Hyweth's fears as much as she could.

Meanwhile Bereck continued his lecture, which currently involved lying a hapless apprentice on a workbench and having the others come and prod at him. That was what you got for not turning in your work; you got to help with demonstrations!

She has gained weight, Hyweth said at last. It was one of the only symptoms the crimson had not yet given Berath. And I do not know why. She gains, but does not eat well. She gets angry easily. She cries easily. I do not know what to do, Berath! She gets upset when I do not do as asked. The crimson paused, placated--for the moment, with the fact that Bereck was not worried. Yours does not fret? Thank you, Berath, Hyweth added, warmly. Thank you for helping. And sending yours. You are a good friend.

The crimson immediately turned her attention to J'nes. The warm tone all but vanished, leaving a testy Hyweth in its place. You have not done enough. Mine is ill, and you did not think to have Hatteth call for a healer. If she does not get better, I will be very angry.

J'len seemed to share her dragon's displeasure. She had sprawled on her cot, and looked up only briefly. "No pies?" she asked. "Shards, J'nes. I said pies. Never you mind. I'm not hungry."

"Alright then," J'nes said, not bothering to explain that there were no pies to be had. Lately that would just get an even sharper reaction from her. He set the plate of food on top of a cabinet near the door and went over to sit on a chair by the cot. "Can I get you anything else? Some water, perhaps?" He reached out tentatively to take her hand, hoping she could let him.

I tried, he relayed to Hyweth through Hatteth. But there's been so much going on. It was hard enough to get her to see a healer about her ankle. And after that we were busy with the clutch and the missing eggs and trying to help the hatchlings... He stopped himself. He was making excuses, and that was not usually his way. But he was worried and didn't know what else to do. You said Bereck is coming. He'll know what to do.

Berath said to Hyweth, It was not time he should be working, but in a way the both felt a debt to the crimson pair that went even beyond their natural compassion.

For the first time in her life Berath was truly, deeply happy and at peace with her life. An ache that had been with them both since Berath had first understood her own nature had eased... which was good because there were new aches to contend with.

Physical pain wasn't any more enjoyable than emotional.

It was some time later when the knock on the door came.

It had taken some time and effort to get there.

Bereck lent heavily on his cane, and though there were dark circles under his eyes those eyes were as bright a blue and as alert as one could ask. He hurt and he was worn but he was here and that more than food and drink was what kept him alive. He needed to be needed, and so it was not entirely altruism that drove him to go to people who asked for him outside of working hours. He'd eat some other time, some time when there was not a chance to be of value.

"I'm fine, J'nes," was J'len's reassurance. She gave his hand a squeeze and flashed him a small smile. "Thank you for trying, love. I'll ask for some later."

Hyweth gave a snort of disbelief, looking away from J'nes. The crimson did not want to hear his excuses. Hers was ill, now. She hadn't been quite so ill during the events he was describing. She made no other response.

When Bereck did arrive, his presence was announced by the crimson. Let him in, Hatteth's. You will open doors from now on. It is the only thing you seem to be able to do without messing up. She nosed at the hut's door, crooning. Bereck was welcome to enter! She would watch from her wallow.

J'nes took J'len's hand in both of his, rubbing his thumb along the back of her hand in a simple gesture of comfort while he waited for the healer.

When Bereck did arrive, Hyweth didn't have to ask him twice. He paid her hard words little mind, knowing she was just as worried as he was. He made his way quickly to the door and opened it with a smile. "Welcome! Thank you for coming," he told Bereck, standing back to hold the door and gesturing for the healer to enter. Seeing how the man was leaning on his cane, he offered, "Please have a seat if you like," indicating the chair that was pulled up to the bedside.

Bereck nodded to the smile but did not return it; he didn't look aggressive or even unfriendly per se, just sober and reserved. "What seems to be the problem then?" he asked as he entered and moved over to the proffered chair. He was rather gladder of it than he cared to admit and eased himself into it carefully, expression tightening a little as he did so.

"Berath has told me what Hyweth says your symptoms are but I would like to hear them from you," Bereck said to J'len, setting his cane out of the way and then leaning forward to get a better look at the woman.

J'len was not as pleased to see Bereck as Hyweth, nor J'nes, but to her credit, she did offer the man a small smile when he sat. "My stomach," she said at once, when he asked for symptoms. "I've never been sick like this. I try to eat, most things have a foul taste to them," she was struggling to describe her symptoms. What if J'nes became upset? "I feel as if I've swallowed a live firelizard. It was worse last sevenday, the stomach sickness." The crimson rider hesitated, glancing to J'nes. She didn't want him to worry--and yet. What if it was what she suspected? What would they do if it was?

"I didn't mean to worry anyone," she said. "I'm sure it's nothing. Is there a bug going around?"

J'nes moved around to the opposite side of the bed, seating himself gently at the edge of the cot so he could be near J'len. To the list of symptoms she'd given, he added, "She's been throwing up a lot. And asking me to find various foods, though if I can find them she doesn't always want them by the time I get back. For what she does eat, some of them stay down and some don't."

He tried to think of anything else, but only one came to mind. Hoping that J'len wouldn't take the the wrong way, he ventured, "And, um she has been a bit more...moody of late."

Bereck looked from one rider to the other and back again. Were they ignorant, stupid, oblivious or some combination of the above? Well he was ninety nine percent sure what was going on here but he liked to be thorough and planned to ask a couple more questions first.

"I see," he said neutrally. "Any other symptoms J'len? Frequent urination? Any changes to your monthly courses?..." He supposed he wasn't one to talk about not noticing, but in all fairness Alina had been very early on when they had parted and he had been rather distracted with work; it wasn't as though he had missed blatantly obvious cravings and morning sickness.

J'len's eyes veered towards J'nes as he spoke. A scowl crossed her features almost immediately. "I have not!" she snapped. "He's asking me." Moody. Ha! If anything, J'nes had been more sensitive lately. "You'd be moody, too. Eggs stolen, upset dragons keeping you up all night. A wherry of a weyrmate pacing the entire length of the Weyr to keep you from doing anything. Dimglow."

She did not seem to appreciate Bereck's questions; she answered them curtly. "No. And my last was five months ago. I thought maybe it was late, after Hyweth rose--I've been suspecting pregnancy. J'nes wouldn't let me go between, because of my ankle. And then because of Hyweth clutching. Couldn't go. Couldn't risk the eggs. Worry-wherry. I didn't want him to worry more and become more pesty than a firelizard."
