Chapter one: Intro
It was late afternoon when I finally made it home, the traffic had kept me on the road for so much longer then I had expected but I finally made it into my two bedroom one bathroom apartment. The apartment stood on the second story of complex near the beach and since it’s the weekend everyone is rushing to spend time in the ocean before school and work start again on Monday.
With a sigh I flip on the light but only one bulb of two in the overhead light sputters to life, brightening the small space of my living room in an off dark shade like a scene from a horror movie. I groan, tossing my purse onto the small dark coffee table placed before my not so impressive TV and make my way into the kitchen then come back moments later tugging at the bright red cardboard box on a pack of new light bulbs. I just changed these bulbs last week! How could they already be out? I sigh again, tearing at the box with what little strength I have “Come on! Open already!” I yell at it and in turn the box tears in half one of the four bulbs in the pack flies out of its place and crashes against the wall near the sliding glass door to the balcony. I scream like a little girl when it shatters into bits, leaving a small chip in the paint and a pile of broken glass below. My cheeks are flushed with embarrassment at my childish scream but I shake it off and go back into the kitchen to get a broom and dustpan, abandoning the ripped box of bulbs on the dusty couch.
After everything was cleaned up and I changed the bulbs again I made my way down the dim hall and into my room, as I approached the door the bright red letters spelling out my name greeted me. I smiled, running my fingers over the delicately painted letters, Seraphique. A weird name I know but it’s mine. My fingers brush the A once more before I pull the door open, glancing around as I make my way into the room. Posters of various bands and movies plaster the walls to the roof. I almost forgot the real color of the walls by now. Flop down into the chair of my vanity, looking myself over in the mirror, pale skin dotted with freckles on my nose and cheeks, strawberry blonde hair falling in thick waves to my shoulders and big sapphire blue eyes with an almost purple hue to them. I wasn’t very pretty, my eyelashes were so light it didn’t look like I had any, the freckles made me look like a five year old with my big round eyes, I looked like an innocent little girl, I just need bows in my hair to pull off the look. My figure wasn’t very impressive, no one believes me when I tell them I’m nineteen, it’s hard for me to believe it myself. I sigh, staring blankly into the mirror before taking my wings off…Not real ones of course! I’m talking about my necklace is what I meant haha…I turn the silver wing shaped pendant over in my small hands, my fingers trailing over the the small silver feathers. I don’t remember where I got the pendant but I know it’s important, something I can’t lose. A quick glance out the window across the room shows that the sun has set; the stars glittered outside like diamonds in the light as I sit up slowly, dusting the bottom of my skirt, even though there’s nothing there, and hurry to collect my pajamas for the night. It’s Friday night and my plans consist of eating popcorn and ice cream while watching cheesy drama movies on my laptop in bed. Amazing right?
I take a fifteen minute shower and stumble out of the bathroom in the hall drying my hair with my pink towel, my body wrapped in an almost identical one as I make my way into the kitchen to collect my feast but something stops me dead in my tracks; The sound of the shower turning on again. I work to slow my breath that quickened unintentionally then turn slowly towards the bathroom, my eyes wide with terror as I slowly step forward. The steam of hot water rises out from under the closed bathroom door and fogs the already dim hallway light. I gulp, my heart pounding in my chest and a thousand explanations running through my head “W-Who’s there?” I demand but my voice sounds small and broken even in my own ears.
There’s no response though other than the ruffling of the shower curtain “Who’s there?” I call out again, my voice louder this time. I drop the pink towel from my hair, letting it fall to my feet as I hold onto the towel around my body with one hand and take the glass flower vase from the table in the hall, the yellow roses that use to be in it have all died by now and the vase itself is too small to do any serious harm but it’s all I have to protect me. I reach the door, it’s slightly cracked and the lights on and letting a small sliver of golden light stream out into the hallway I pull my leg back, ready to kick the door open when it flies open, a curtain of thick, white, fruit smelling steam streaming out in wisps, making the air damp and the light fogged.
