Nono had stalled as long as she thought possible and fit in some days after that. The Firekin she met tolerated her enough to expend their time and energy elsewhere. Slowly but surely, she was gaining more ground in her quest to mimic their strange accents. This was not a skill one learned passively. She had to put forth the effort daily, at times going from sun up to sun down without uttering a word in her mother tongue.

She would test her progress today.

Shunqa's recent tension with his father had driven him away from the lion in question. He needed to hunt. It was by chance alone that he struck out just in time to notice the familiar sight of a certain foreigner fast approaching. He stopped.

If there was anyone he owed an apology, it was this lioness.

The day she returned to the borders it felt as if the thinning language barrier was the only thing that had changed. There he was again, just like the last time. Upon closer inspection, she noted another difference: his claws were sheathed.

Nono drew close enough to speak, but it was still a respectable distance away she stilled. "Is your family the only one who fights?" she asked bitterly.

His family? Shunqa could feel his tail curling around his back leg, his teeth pressing down from the top row onto the bottom. "No," he replied, as though it too was a question. Unlike her, he saw no benefit in putting off the inevitable. "I apologize for that. I'd like to make it up to you with a respectable duel."

Nono - Move 1/5 Roll: 2

Nono stared at his countenance for any sign of dishonesty and found none. He looked and sounded sincere. She nodded, took a step back, and prepared herself for battle. When they were both at the ready she charged forward, managing a glancing blow at his side.

Shunqa - Move 1/5 Roll: 1 - Miss

Shunqa was more agile a fighter than she, so he could only reason she had predicated exactly when and how he would strike. A paw swung toward her, assaulting only the air and sand. He tried to turn, but it was too late.

Nono - Move 2/5 Roll: 2

Indeed, Nono had anticipated his pattern. When he lifted his leg, she was already prepared to move. She could hear the whoosh of air in her ear as she narrowly avoided the incoming paw. In retaliation, Nono collided into him with as much force as it took to knock him over.

Shunqa - Move 2/5 Roll: 3

Thump! Shunqa toppled over, but didn't stay there for long. Rather than get to his paws then make his move, he threw his weight against her the same she'd done him, only less controlled and with more muscle behind it.

Nono - Move 3/5 Roll: 1

Nono wasn't surprised by this either, but that didn't keep her from toppling to the ground. She barely managed to shuffle away from him and stand. Any attempts to land a hit were futile.

Shunqa - Move 3/5 Roll: 2

Not long ago, Shunqa might have pursued her. He was still plagued by guilt from the outcome of their last encounter, however, and so he went a bit rigid where he stood -- not attacking, just waiting and watching.

Nono - Move 4/5 Roll: 3

Once Nono had her wits about her, she noticed Shunqa's reluctance and didn't repay the favor. She charged forward, then wrapped her paw around the back of his neck, sending them both to the sand again.

Shunqa - Move 4/5 Roll: 3

The harsh contact with the ground snapped Shunqa out of his reverie. He growled, though without the viciousness of the time prior, and struggled with Nono until at last he had pinned her. When she tried to rise again, he slammed his paws back down.

Nono - Move 5/5 Roll: 3

Bimnono had the wind and sense knocked out of her. Her paw strike him across the face; his responded in kind. When she managed to spot an out, she broke free and hurried up, staring him down.

Knowing this would determine the match, she braced herself. As soon as she saw him twitch, she charged.

Shunqa - Move 5/5 Roll: 3

Shunqa met her halfway, each with their paw held high in the air. They swung, but it was his that landed the winning blow. After Nono fell, he backed up, his claws popping out just for a second.

"Well fought."

Nono lingered in the sand a few seconds. She stood and once she stopped swaying from side to side, managed a nod to him. "And you."

Soon, she would return for yet another try. Just not too soon.

Also, Hope smashed her head through a brick wall at the thought of another SRP duel.

End.
