The cold was making everyone move slowly those days. From getting to one location to the next, to just simply doing chores in the house. Perhaps it was how dark the days had gotten, or maybe the fact cloud hung over the land ready to drop snow at a moment’s notice, but few seemed eager to even work. He’d diagnosed five normally bright and cheerful men as depressed, and a few women as well. What made it all worse was the rumors. Disappearances, combined with the stories of wolves returning….

Marco shook his head as he went over his notes and records. He’d lost two patients to an unknown assailant who seemed to have spirited them away. Five others had said they no longer desired his services because they would not leave their homes. As the wind howled outside, Marco looked over to his companion, the guardian Somnium, who seemed more sleepy than anything.

Even with the winds howling outside, the buck wasn’t bothered. No, not unless Marco kicked him out.

With the wolves scaring the majority of people to staying inside, at least one wasn't beyond leaving her home. Rosalie had run out of her medicine provided by Eaton, and not wanting to drag the herbalist out of his home with the threat of wolves lingering, she went to see a doctor. However, this seemed to be more of a chore than she expected, most having closed shop or left.

It was this day that she had finally made her way to Marco's residence, riding atop the far more steady Aelius. He knew where to go, and she wasn't really feeling comfortable walking herself, so it was far more convenient. Arriving, still keeping Aelius close, she knocked on the door. "Excuse me, would you happen to be open?" She called, patting the buck on the nose all the while. She did fear that perhaps he would be gone, or that the wind had drowned her out, but she remained at the doorstep, hopeful.

A knock to the door, and both man and guardian looked up from where they were. It was Marco that moved first, getting his work down to open the door as whoever it was had enough manners to not just invite themselves inside. Then again, it was a doctor’s residence. When you needed help.. manners sometimes escaped your notice. As the door opened Marco expected just a woman from the sound of the voice, but a woman and a deer? He guessed it was another guardian, and Somnium’s attention was also captured.

Still guardian and chosen or not, Marco had a job to do. “Yes, I’m always open. A doctor doesn’t have hours, not in a real set in stone fashion at least.” He had enough people coming to him in the middle of the night he’d given up with the whole hours of operation.

“Please, come in.” As looking to the buck he nodded. “Your friend can as well, provided he doesn’t break anything ot get into a tiff with Somnium.” His own guardian gave a snort from his corner of the room, watching the new pair as best he could.

Aelius was relieved to feel the warmth emanate from the door as it opened, closing his eyes and leaning into it. At this point, he didn't know he'd be welcome, and just tried to get a moment to feel the frost melt on the tip of his nose. He did, however, meet eyes with Somnium, curious as to now whether he'd be allowed in! Maybe the kind doctor would? Oh so kind doctor?

"Ah thank goodness..Everyone else seems to be out, or locked up." Rosalie breathed, stepping in when invited. She shed her cloak, trying to straighten out her now frazzled hair. Aelius shyly stepped in after her, careful to keep as much of the snow outside as he could. He gave a snort in greeting to Somnium, hoping the other might be a little bit friendly?

"He won't be much trouble. Aelius keeps to himself back at home, so if he won't tussle with me whilst I'm at work, he won't do it here, won't you?" There was an expectant gaze between the two, but both parties knew that Aelius would do nothing of the sort. "Now....I'm afraid I've run out of my medication. I saw an herbalist a few weeks prior, but I don't want to pull him out with the current...threat about." She trusted Marco knew what she spoke of. Wolves. Wolves everywhere. "He diagnosed me with arthritis, affecting mostly my hands. I can't work when the weather's like this, because it flares up...." She explained, taking her gloves off so he could examine them.

Shaking his head Marco looked outside momentarily. “Weather is turning sour. Well, more so than it has been. Hopefully the snow won’t turn to ice overnight. Then I’ll have worse things to worry about.” Roofs were not made to hold up pounds and pounds of frozen water after all, not for extended periods of time at least. Shutting the door behind the woman and the buck Marco motioned to a nearby bench .

“Please, sit. Somnium-“ the buck in the corner got a look, “-don’t start strutting.” Somnium gave a loud snort before tapping his hoof on the floor. Really, Marco needed to have a little more faith in him.
“If a doctor locked his door, it would be a bit nasty for those seeking help. Especially in this kind of weather.” While Marco was listening, Somnium got up from his spot, tilting his head at the other buck in the room. So he wouldn’t start anything? As far as Somnium was concerned that was good. Then again- going to the fire, the guardian laid down enjoying the warmth all to himself.

“I see, arthritis… it’s perfectly fine and understandable to not want to call him out in this weather, or with gods only know what running around. And..” Looking at her hands, Marco went over the joints, looking for signs of swelling, pain- He sighed pulling back. “The cold won’t do you much good, so I’ll give you something to help keep you a bit warm, stimulate circulation. But you know what the herbalist gave you? If it’s been working keeping you on the same thing will help.”

Rosalie didn't seem bothered by the presence of the other buck, and neither did Aelius for that matter. She sat down on the bench, shedding a few more layers of clothes, the outermost damp from melted snow, and got herself comfortable. The buck, however, sat near her side, his head resting on the bench. It had been worse lately, and he was most concerned for his chosen's health. He longed to be near the fireplace, but the other buck seemed to be enjoying it at the moment.

"It has been trouble trying to find someone in these dire times. I've had to go to various other stores because my usual ones have shut their doors...Not only from the weather." She spoke quietly, patting her buck upon his head. "I cannot work without pain as of late." Even now her hands were shaking, and every now and then the aching would start up again.

At his questions however, she gave a deeper sigh. "I'm afraid I'm not sure what he prescribed to me. It was some sort of herbal tea and a salve. Both worked wonderfully, and I've had to use them so often I ran out." Indeed, her joints were certainly inflamed, and even as she moved them it became evident that it was a little worse than she was letting on. "I would write to him, but there are few who can brave the storms and rumors that would like to run outside of town to a small cottage."

Smug Somnium sat by the warm fire, blue eyes going from Marco to their guests. Wet cloths removed the buck eyed them and the fact that the other guardian in the room seemed to be wet as well, a fact that didn’t go unnocticed by Marco. A stern look from chosen to guardian, a snort from Somnium and he moved, replaced by a grate that quickly was having wet layers draped over it to dry. Deprived of his heating spot, Somnium shook his head, opting to trail after Marco instead. “Hope you don’t mind. Sending you back in wet clothes in this weather would be careless. Anyway-“

Another look at her hands. Then at her. “Marco Rossi if you didn’t already know. And if you ever need a shop to open it’s doors, feel free to ask me to go as proxy. Refusing a customer is one thing but refusing a doctor is another. I’ve already had to harass the man down the road to keep his shop open. If they all close this place will be worse than it already is.” There was a pause before he went on. “Wolves be damned. I’ve iron up and even so, cowering will only give the rumors strength. Tell that to the next delivery man who says no. Chances are if he’d some pride he’ll prove you he’s no coward by doing exactly what you ask.”

Getting up and going to his cabinet, the doctor brought down a few small tins, each one smelling slightly. “I’ve a few ointments but many have chemicals and whatnot. A few are purely herbal, so we’ll try those first. Just tell me if any look, smell or feel similar.” Uncapping the tins he set them down. “Since you know more of what he gave you than I do you’ll have to help me by narrowing it down. The tea however shouldn’t be too difficult. Given the weather I can prescribe a blend that will help the circulation as well. Better than a pill at least.”

"You're far too kind..." The woman replied, giving a slight smile as she sat, still trying to keep her hands as still as possible. Aelius knew he'd be getting a nice warm blanket when they got home anyway, and could stand staying slightly damp for a while. Especially if a book was involved, though he was far more interested in Somnium. He watched the other buck curiously, ears flicking every now and then in pure wonder if the other one would be his new friend? Aelius liked friends.

"Ah, forgive me, I've been terribly rude." She gasped, obviously embarrassed, "Rosalie Satre, it's a pleasure. And this is Aelius." The aforementioned buck gave a grunt, friendly and warm, in greeting, nuzzling up against his chosen. "I can assure you that my store will stay open, though it's probably quite out of the way for you. I'm sure there's another smithy nearby here." She seemed rather surprised that the man was not beyond harassment, though it was for the good of the city. Perhaps she'd found a doctor she'd keep up with.

At his mention of the wolves, she nodded. "That's exactly why I don't want to write to the herbalist. I know he'll try to travel in this weather, and with the danger of wolves, I'd rather him be vaguely safe at home...Though the city might be safer, now that I think of it..." Perhaps she would have to write Eaton. Surely Aelius wouldn't mind seeing his best friend again, and she could probably have a few things to offer him. "I'll have to put the next delivery man up to the challenge. I'm sure that the outskirts, especially the northern ones, aren't the best place to be. Though he does have a guardian at his side."

"I'm sure I'll remember it by smell. After using it so graciously for the past week, I'm sure it'll be familiar." She reached to take one of them to smell, though had to take a moment to focus, as the shaking was making them hard to pick up. It was the second one that she nodded, curiously looking at the label. Taking note of the name, she set it back down...Carefully. "Tea would be nice. I drink a rather copious amount, especially in the cold, though my home doesn't need any more warming with the forge going.."

Marco thought it less kindness and more simple practicality. Having her go home just to fall it. It was questionable business at best. Not to mention a simple sickness could quickly go south in this weather. As Marco downplayed compliments in his head as he often did, Somnium was returning Aelius’s looks. Head tilting before the buck looked over to the guardian’s chosen. There was certainly a connection there. Getting up, the brown and white buck motioned to the fire, stepping out of the way. He could be nice… if a bit due to the fact Marco was entering work mode.

“Miss Satre, Aelius.” Marco nodded to them both, yet sighed as Rosalie explained why she hadn’t written the one who’d given her her herbal applications. Healers were prone to going where they were needed, it was just in their nature. “A healer by nature, if he’s of any merit, will seek those who need him, hellish cold or not. Wolves are like the weather, a man must not think of them, or they’ll get worse than they really are. That and we don’t know if they have returned.” Glancing to the two deer in the room. “Yet the signs point to it being so. Still I try not to put much stock into rumor. There was a rumor this last summer that the world would end and that had not come to pass. Then again, they say such things each year. You’d think the world already had ended.”

Picking up the second Marco nodded. “This seems about right. Herbal blend, just a bit of added elements to keep it from going dry. As for tea… do you have a preference to flavor or is it take what you can get. Some things I can prescribe will be cheap, others costly. It just depends on what you prefer for flavor.”

Aelius perked his ears as Somnium moved, leaving the fire for him. The buck gave a slightly nervous look between Marco and Rosalie, but quietly strode by to the other buck. He politely bumped snouts with him, giving his thanks, before settling down by the fire, leaving just a little bit of room in case Somnium wanted to keep partially warm.

"I'll have to write him again then." She nodded. "Surely he'd like to get out of the house, and I'm sure I'll be better building a small stockpile of the medication, especially if the weather remains like this." With his words on the wolves, she tried to remember the previous summer....No, nothing she had heard about, though she had far fewer customers than she did now. "It does seem like it might be true.....I wonder if a new version of the Wardens will be formed, if it is true." The woman would at least like to live her years out, and find an heir for her trade...But to be remembered in history, that was something alluring in and of itself....

"Hmmm..." She thought about the tea quietly, trying to think over some type of tea she was extremely fond of. It wasn't like she was currently short on money...She'd just need to be more careful for the next month or so on buying novels and the like. This was important for her work, so it needed to be something she'd use. "Something with a little spice to it would be nice, considering the weather."

The other buck took the place by the fire, Somnium tried to brush it off. Snout bump or not, he hadn’t wanted to move but- What could be best described as a sigh escaped Somnium as he lowered himself by the remaining spot by the fire. Some warmth was better than no warmth. Not to mention a wet buck hardly made anyone happy. Himself included.

Marco on the other hand was busy fishing out various herbs and looking through a few blends he kept on hand. “A chai then with a slightly stronger leaf to it. It’s a rather simple thing. If they tell you it’s some high price amount don’t fall for it. In theory you can make your own but I’ve no recipe. It’s just tea with spices really. They can dress it up under a fancy name but tea is tea in the end.” Pulling out a small tin he brought it over. “Smell and tell me it you think it might suit.” Looking at the two buck by the fire he avoided the topic for a while, enjoying the own silence of his thoughts.

“The weather won’t improve until it’s people do. That’s the old wives tale at least. “If the wolves really out back it will fall to us to take up the mantle of warden. They’ll form even if wolves are not back. It’s the nature of men and women to seek honor and glory, to want to protect that which they hold dear. The guardians returned to us. Perhaps it’s history simply repeating itself.” The was a look of concern passed from Guardian to Chosen. “This time, we have the advantage thankfully.”

Aelius settled down fairly quickly, happy that Somnium joined him. He tried to ignore the impending time of departure, happy to be drying off the slightest bit before treading out in that terrible weather again. It wasn't like he wouldn't be able to dry off once home, but keeping the cold out of his bones was nice.

"Chai sounds wonderful." She agreed, taking a sniff of the tea within the tin. Certainly powerful. "Yes, this will do nicely." Marco seemed to be very knowledgeable on a lot, it seemed. She certainly would have to remember his advice, both on stores, mail, and tea. Perhaps if she came down with any other ailments, she would have to visit him again....

The words of the tales of old struck a little more home than she expected. Though she certainly wasn't going to say exactly why her expression was a little nostalgic, Aelius did look up curiously at her before settling back down. "I never expected that in my lifetime the Wardens might be reformed...." Then again, she never expected to have a few shop companions. Whilst she had heard of many who kept a rook or grimalkin in their shop, she was certainly one of the few, if not only, who had a guardian. "Yes..I believe the advantage is on us. We are prepared...Better than the last time."

While Aelius might have been glad, Somnium found himself slightly awkward, emotions shared with his chosen, earning him a raised eyebrown. Marco didn’t know what a deer could do about the cold. They lived in it well enough in the wild after all. Somnium just looked around, wondering if there was a better way to help ‘his’ guest.

“Glad to hear it. If you end up needing less spice or can’t afford the chai, just get a black. It should have same effects.” Going back to his stores he began to set away what wasn’t needed. Ointments back in place as he listened, before setting the teas back in order. It was all up in the air, the notions of guardians and chosen and wolves.

They had an advantage, but for how long? Had it already been used up? Were they now facing the same enemy and the wardens of old had or were these somehow evolved predators? He’d caught what a few other physicians had been saying, that the fear was causing many to come in falling ill from worry of all things. Those more based in the old ways poke of other things. Of ill omens returning. That this winter would be the first of many harsh seasons to follow. “They might not reform though, not for a few years at least. The few chosen I’ve met have all seemed less the types to seek glory and more the types to want to live their everyday lives, much like myself. Soon the glory hunters will ride in though.” He shook his head, going to his desk, scrawling out what he’d given her.
“Perhaps it is because I’m a bit jaded I think this way. Just hope I’m wrong, that maybe… we’ll have better so called heros then just glory hunters.”

Aelius was most excited for going home for his blanket. Rosalie had spoiled him just the slightest bit, and the buck had become very much so accustomed to the warmth of the forge. Not that he didn't mind the cold. He just didn't like the wet cold. The wet cold caused by snow! For now though, he was settled down in the small area, happy to be drying off just a little bit.

"I should be fine on coin for now....Speaking of which, about how much do I owe you for your services?" Rosalie reached for her coin purse to prepare to count out how much he desired. Tea and an ointment? She should have enough with all the work she's had of late....

She too worried a little in the back of her head, trying to blot it out. There were already so many missing...or dead. Or worse, for that matter. How long before they took Palisade? How long before she and Aelius would stand down against a wolf bigger than she? The woman shook her head a little, though it ended up being a good enough reply to Marco. "I am much like that as well....I do hope there will be heroes. History is in the making, though we may not know it. One day these will be tales told by parents to their own children....I hope." The worry peered out through her words. Would there be a future for Sunderland?

Marco looked at Somnium who shook his head as the doctor and buck shared a feel feelings and minor thoughts, (if they could be called such). A heavy sigh and Marco waved his hand in the air, dismissing. “No charge this time. Consider it… a gift from one chosen to another.” He paused huffing as Somnium snorted in his direction. Some things they would disagree on it would seem. “Next time I’ll have to charge but this is just a gift. After all, with as many coming in these past few days I have enough stored that I needn’t worry about some simple tea and ointment.” Plus, he could get it discounted. The blessings of being a doctor.

A rub of his hands together and Somnium stood, going over to the two chosen, bowing slightly at Rosalie.”If that is all Miss Satre, you’ll probably want to head out before anymore of the bloody snow falls. History might be in the making, but I have no desire to see being snowed in as a part of it.” She offered her a small smile. “Hope is what I have seen keep men alive even when told they would not live past morning. Hope and faith.” Going to grab her coat from by the fire, it was significantly dryer, and lingering with a bit of warmth. He offered it up to her. “We just have to survive and fight for that right. History will eventually, write itself.”
