Dwin’rretyn
'Walkers in the Heavens'
The Avariel, or winged, Elves as a whole are divided into two main groups- the warlike and the peaceful. The Dwin'rretyn fall into the latter category- their focus being on the arts (namely music), study of magic and learning trades. The quiet and studious nature of most of the Dwin'rretyn causes them to be one of the more reclusive avariel clans; that is not to say they aren't friendly, quite the opposite, it is just very rare that someone not born in the clan would be brave enough to brave the trip into the mountains where they make their home.
Wanderlust is a very rare trait among the Dwin'rretyn, most are content to remain close to home for their entire lives, study and contribute to the greater good of their clan. Those who seek a future outside the clan are free to do so without repercussions and they are welcome to return any time they wish. Particularly if they bring new stories, or even better, visitors with them.
Homeland
The village of the Dwin'rretyn is high up in the mountains, the location serves a two fold purpose- it puts them closer to the sky and it is more easily defended from their enemies. The climb to the village is extremely precarious, it is safer (and much quicker) to simply fly up to it. The homes of the elves are carved from the mountains with magic, covered in rich colors and fabrics to make up for the coldness of the stone. Most families live together under one roof- except in the case of marriage where one spouse or another will join the other's family.
Social Structure
The clan is watched over by a chieftan and his (or her) chosen mate- it is more for social relations than actual leadership. Together they serve as a voice of the Dwin'rretyn at clan meetings. The pair can offer advice to those who come seeking it, or settle disputes if it is necessary. Each family within the village follows much the same structure- usually the eldest pair in each family looks after things.
Languages
Most of the the Dwin’rretyn, aside from those who have wandered out into the world, only speak a dialect of Elven that is unique to their clan. If one were to travel to another clan the roots of the languages are similar, but some words and phrases would change.
Festival Days
- Weddings: Finding ones true mate is a very special day indeed; weddings performed at dusk, with a celebration to follow and the new pair greets their first dawn together.
- Births: As it is very rare for Dwin’rretyn women to birth more than one- occasionally two-children, each birth is very special. Children are not officially named and considered Dwin’rretyn until they are presented to the chieftan and their mate. The ceremony usually occurs a day or two after the birth.
- Special Visitors: From a visiting chieftan pair to just about any other special visitor- there is usually some sort of small gathering arranged. Visitors are so rare most are welcomed with open arms.
Notable Customs
- Dyeing Wing Feathers: It is a common practice, particularly among the young adults, to dye the tips of their wing feathers any number of colors. The color is usually chosen to compliment the color of their hair or eyes. Washing out the dye used for the practice takes a very long time, so feathers retain their coloring long after (months or even years) they no longer bother with the practice.
Magic
Magic is common place- many of the clan's historians and scholars are also magi. It is not uncommon for one of the clan to have some small magic, as it is passed through bloodlines, even if the discipline of spellcraft is not their focus for study. Each would be taught enough to at least control the ability they do have so it does not become a danger.
Fashion
Practical, but colorful, is probably the best way to describe it. Clothes are lighter in the spring- crafted from a fabric whose weave is far tougher than it looks. In the winter leather and fur are not uncommon additions. Things like full cloaks are virtually non existent, given their impracticality with wings.
Other Clans
Dwin’rretyn - Weavers.
Bes'iselani - Blacksmiths.
Orle'wyn - Woodcrafters, known for instruments.
Baequi'avia - Leatherworkers, another settlement closer to the base of the mountains.
Hlae'tlarn - More spiritual than actual crafters. Interclan meetings are held here.
