Months had gone by since he’d been up north. He was quite sure that for everything that was going on, with the fact the rumors of wolves returning, crime had gone up. Hence, why they had called in as many able bodied men as the towns up north could muster. The pay would be solid, steady, and all he had to do was keep watch on the roads, patrol city streets, walk around and make sure there really no wolves come down from the north.

Marcus hoped it wasn’t wolves honestly. He;d never seen one sure, but he knew of them even if not a native. The time he’d spent trying to unravel the history of the totem he’d learned a great deal about the wardwood, and about what had once been in the world. He didn’t like what he’d read, and now with the stories and rumors cropping up along with the diapperances? It put him on edge, worse than when he’d once feared that his old master might have found him.

Sitting on a roadside bench just outside one of the towns, Marcus pat Blood Runner on his flank. The fawn had grown into a large, and rather aggressive buck. If anyone was going to be trusted to keep his back from wolves, Marcus would trust his guardian. It was after all, supposedly his role in the world. Still, sitting on the bench, snow fluttering around them, the hired hand hoped that he wouldn’t have to go running for help should something happen. He was supposed to be joined by another watchman but he lacked a watch, and his lantern hardly helped him know how long he’d been out. Star navigation wasn’t his forte either. So, he just sat, and waited, unsure if he was early or his partner was late.

When the nightly patrols had started up, Theron had resisted volunteering. He didn't like people that much, and he didn't want to have to shepherd them through the wilderness in the middle of winter, especially with the possibility of wolves on the loose. His refusal had lasted all of a day, before he'd given in and written his name (one of the few things he could write) on the patrol sheet. Stormstruck had felt immensely satisfied, but she hadn't even done anything.

He arrived at the rendezvous point looking somewhat underdressed. Despite his fur-lined cloak and gloves, and thicker clothes, it didn't look like he was wearing enough to protect against the cold. He couldn't afford to sacrifice mobility for comfort, though, and the cold was nothing he hadn't felt before. The white doe at his side looked like a ghost, with her blue eyes and markings practically glowing against the snow.

It took him a moment to recognize the buck, and then the man. There was no mistaking the Guardian's markings. "Marcus," he greeted, offering the man a gloved hand to shake. "I haven't seen you in a while. Are you here for the patrol?" He was carrying a lantern of his own in his other hand, and he had a bow and quiver slung around his back.

A friendly face was welcome over those of strangers, so rife with suspicion and scared at the slightest sound and movement in the snow. He half guessed they jumped due to the sound of their own voices. Hand taken with a small smile, the grip was firm if short. "And poorer I for it. Trapping was perhaps one of the better jobs I've help. This patrol business." A sad shake of his head.

"A man needs coin to put food in front of his face. And to stay warm with all this damnable cold. Even chilly in the south." He groused. He just told himself that once he did this job, he'd be good for a few days. Cheap meals, cheap bed- he would have to woo the women but he could do without if need be.

Blood Runner gave a small look to Stormstruck, head tilting to the side. It had been a fair long while, hadn't it? He bowed his dead to the doe before giving a snort, looking to Marcus. A simple traveler's pack strapped to the buck's back a point of clear... debate as to if it was really needed.

"Patrol at night, patrol at day. Either way this damn cold nips at you. Better work than protecting the caravans though." Pausing, the man smirked. "Am I lucky enough to find that you're my partner for the night?"
