Guardian

Name : Eglantine Renly
Pet Name(s) :
Gender : Female
Date of Birth : June 29th
Age : 54
Occupation : Current head honcho of Renly Rails; tutors in etiquette on the side

Appearance : Although she stands at a towering 5'11", Eglantine is still a modest sight to behold. At fifty-four years old, a fair few of youth's gifts have faded by now, but many still linger in the lines of her face and the ever present straightness of her back.

From top to toe, Eglantine fits her age. Her hair is long, dusty brown that is (to her pleasure) only now starting to streak with gray and is usually kept in a high bun atop her head. Bangs are not present on her brow, however a shorter wisp tends to come free here and there no matter how snugly she secures those wayward bits with pins. Her eyes are a vibrant green and framed with smart, thin-rimmed spectacles. Flanking both her eyes are crows feet and other age lines, which - even though she happily wears make up every day - Eglantine does not make an effort to cover up. Her nose is straight but on the smaller side, the tip ending in a slight upward point. Her lips are thin and her mouth is also small, and like her eyes are surrounded by laugh lines as well as general age lines. Her skin is white in color and is very soft, both from tender care of it and not spending too much time outside exposed and unprotected to the sun.

Eglantine's build can easily be described as 'willowy'. She is tall, slim, and long of limb; with larger hands and feet that aren't mannish. Her clothing is modest as she easily states she is now past the age where baring all in a short number is acceptable for her career. She is fond of long, trailing bustle skirts topped with lacy or frilly blouses and tends to find a cinch between the two acceptable for herself. She accessorizes accordingly, but jewels are like her make up and she is fond of both. Rings and necklaces are most common on her personage while bracelets seem to be brought out mostly when Eglantine is attending a party or other gathering. Beneath her skirts, Eglantine is fond of heels or fancy women's boots - the sort made for looking nice, instead of heavy duty wear and tear.

Personality :

{ Courteous } - Eglantine has the politeness and manners of an upper class woman. She greets and treats everyone equally due in part to her time spent living among middle and lower class people, only treating those who've earned her ire in any way but her normal, amicable one. She speaks in a well mannered way as well and teaches such manners to anyone she takes into her etiquette classes.
{ Active } - Eglantine is a doer. She puts thought into her actions of course, but she feels right at home being part of something rather than a wallflower on the sidelines. She's been this way since she was a child and despite being in her mid-fifties now, that has hardly changed. Hard work moves mountains better than sitting on one's a** does after all and she's all too happy to put in her fair share no matter the subject at hand.
{ Gossipy } - A talker through and through, Eglantine has an ear for gossip that has only grown as time has gone by. As social as she is, she does so love to pick up little tidbits - factual or not - and delights in the latest rumors going around. She might not believe all of them, but when in idle talk, gossip does come up more often than not and Eglantine does not mind the fact that she is among the reason why such things get out of hand!

Likes : Tea, jewelery, make up, going out, traveling, tutoring, the theater, stews, good first impressions, chocolate liquors, nice clothing...
Dislikes : Muddy streets, cabbage, being told what to do, losing track of time, being chilly...
Hobbies : Gardening, reading, shopping, tutoring, reminiscing...

History : "If you're riding rails, you're riding Renly!"

Tobias Renly started a railroad company in his middle years on the idea that Aimes and its neighboring countries could all be interconnected and give everyone wishing to travel the ease and means to do so. Although starting such a project proved difficult for a lowly mill worker to fund; with a lot of work, borrowing, promises, and one or two sizable loans Renly Rails eventually got off the ground. Once it did, it quickly became a success, catapulting Tobias from wage slave to rags-to-riches story.

In time, Tobias married and had a family. Arthur Renly was born as the third of four, which would theoretically make him well out of line for taking over the family business. However, due to having siblings who had dreams that extended outside their father's company and the rail yards, Arthur took over after his father eventually retired at the age of seventy-five. At thirty-two, Arthur knew all he needed to know about running his father's business and do a damn good job of it, thanks in part to spending a great deal of his free time nipping at dad's heels when not in school or lessons and having the personality that suited a company's head. At thirty-three he married, and by the time he was thirty-four he had his only child - a daughter - by his wife Charlotte: a girl they named Eglantine.

Given the booming success of Renly Rails, Eglantine had a good life from the moment she was brought into the world. She was tutored in all manner of subjects from mathematics and history to etiquette and dance, and had just about everything she could ever want. As a child she was as happy as could be, but as her young adult years came around, Eglantine became as rebellious as any of her age.

It seemed to her that she had always been groomed to take over the family business. She was no man, but lessons about the properties of metals, business economics, and other such studies had been part of her curriculum since she had been old enough to understand such things all the same. Eglantine, at the time, did not want to be hammered into such a role and instead wanted to go out and experience life for herself. Her father was, naturally, not pleased by this but a willful child is the hardest to control and he could only sit back and watch as his daughter went out into the world with dreams of being an actress.

Eglantine quickly found out how hard the real world truly was, but being as stubborn as she was, she refused to go back home with tears in her eyes and promises to be good and take over Renly Rails on her lips. There was a time where she was living in an apartment where the ceiling leaked in several spots every time it rained, eating lukewarm tinned food by the light of a kerosene lantern sucking on fumes and sleeping on a glorified mattress, but she still persevered. Every day she was out trying her heart out at auditions - when not earning a pittance as a waitress or other temporary job she could find - and when she reached the age of twenty, Eglantine finally got a bite.

It was a bit part in a hokey stage play by a director who thought herself the next big playwright, but it was something and Eglantine jumped at the chance when she got it. She practiced her two lines until she was certain she was saying them in her sleep, arrived early for practices, and did what she could when she could to show her ambition and drive to be something in this industry. In the end, it did pay off for her, but not as immediately as she would have hoped.

It took two and a half years for Eglantine to finally make it to the big time in acting. In those years she spent more time living in holes in the walls while working her fingers to the bone and stretching herself thin. Parts came here and there, but all of them were bits or minor. She tried for the leads - and if not those then parts that were at least second those leads - but for one reason or another it never came to pass. Until that one June when she was nearing her twenty-third birthday. Eglantine and her present coworkers were performing at a theater in the floating city when the lead actress fainted on stage. Eglantine, in a part of a scullery maid, was fast to act while the rest of the actors were stuck with momentary shock. She ran across the stage, squealing and improvising her rump off, trying to make the actress' spell appear deliberate to the audience. It worked well. Her split second decision to wail and fret over the fallen woman was enough to get everyone to the curtain call for the next scene to be set up and her performance had caught the eye of a critic in the audience who was taking in the show for a review in the next day's paper. The man called the act of improvisation out for what it was, but still called it a well timed, flawless delivery by Eglantine who "groveled woefully and believably while her fellow actors took several moments to recover and were completely thrown off balance by what had just occurred".

The article didn't do much for the show, but it did do everything for the young woman who had up until then never been anything more than a maid or extra. The fainting lady bit became part of the show (but with better results from the other actors once this had been rehearsed) and helped get Eglantine out of the shadows and into some momentary spotlight. That made all the difference. Scouts could now see her and, still working her tail off, that made all the difference. She was approached, given audition notices rather than having to seek them out herself, and - in the end - finally got her lead role. This in turn gave her the boost she needed, especially after that same critic gave the show she starred in a five star review and once more complimented her acting skills.

Eglantine had made it. Her life had now, finally, become the life she had dreamed of and she lived it up the way she saw fit. The young starlet, never one to sit idly by while others lived it up, mingled among and partied with the best of them. She had several romances and rumored affairs that graced the arts and entertainment section of the papers with screaming headlines. She gave openly to charities - both out of the goodness of her heart and also to better her image. She stirred up a rumor that there were racy drawings of her out there in the world just to keep people on their toes. She even got into hot water by threatening the paparazzi and threw the newspapers and readers alike through a loop by having a brief, all be it intense, romance with the very photographer she had threatened.

Of course, all things come to an end, and for Eglantine she happily states it ended in the best way she can figure it could for her. Throughout the time she had been away from home, Eglantine had kept in touch with her family - mostly her mother. In the beginning it had been falsities about how she had been doing (not wanting mother or father to come in and drag her back again if they found out about the leaky apartment) but as soon as she had become successful she began to invite both her parents to her shows. She took no money from her parents, but still did visit and received gifts from them now and again and despite her regular tabloid selling shenanigans all three did keep on relatively good terms. When Eglantine reached her mid-thirties things started to quiet down. She was "past her prime" in the acting world and it was now the time for new stars and starlets to capture everyone's hearts and minds. She still acted, but she did so in more mature plays and roles than before and had slowly but surely become distanced from the party-hardy scene she had lived and loved for so many years. She became pickier about roles too, looking for longer running shows that would have better job security than those little hit-or-miss ones she had dabbled in at the start of her career. Eglantine had surely grown up and it was good that she had.

As she was nearing her fortieth birthday Eglantine received word of her father taking ill. She went home immediately and from that moment effectively closed the door on her nearly two decade career. Arthur had inherited his mother's heart condition and now being in his seventies, it was high time he retired. Of course, Eglantine had inherited her stubbornness from him and the man had held off for as long as he had because he wanted to pass the business down to family rather than "Johnny Upstart". Knowing where she sat in the acting world and seeing her father now, Eglantine finally agreed to what had been her father's hope - but on her terms, not his. And because of that, she prospered.

Using what money she had saved up (as well as a monetary gift from her mother that she was assured she was not allowed to refuse) Eglantine bought a home for herself and began transitioning back into the life of a cultured, wealthy lady. The timing of this made things easier, but it still took a short while for Eglantine to get comfortable with leading a board and doing the tasks required of the head of a booming business. She was happy to find that some aspects were not so different from playing a part on stage, but as with everything she had done until now, she did not half a** her work. Rebelliousness out of her veins, she succeeded reasonably well with taking over after her father; who is still around a decade later and fully content with the direction his father's company is headed.

Now, at age fifty-four, Eglantine is comfortable, happy with her lot in life, and still as active as ever. Despite her many romances and flings over the years, she has never settled down or had any children and for all intents and purposes seems completely fine by this fact. She might not have any heirs to pass the company down to when the time comes but in her mind, she's not going to be doing that for many years to come so there's no reason to worry about such things just yet. She's happy as is and with all her activity thus far, being inactive in any part of her life is just not something that is ever going to happen.

Essence

Coal is a brittle, brown-black to black colored sedimentary rock formed from plant matter buried and compressed underground over millions of years due to a process called carbonization. Coal is highly combustible and thus has been used for centuries as a source of heat, energy, and - more recently - industrial uses.

Although many people are familiar with the coal popularized by the threat of what will be found in their stockings on Christmas if they were naughty, there are in fact several different kinds of coal found throughout the world. They are ranked as such: lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, "steam coal", and anthracite; with lignite being the lowest rank and anthracite the highest. Each type has their own qualities and uses but over time lignite can eventually become anthracite.

As a sedimentary rock, coal is found in coal beds (also called coal seams) layered between other types of rock and mineral. Coal mines are shafts that delve into the earth in order to reach rich veins of coal, however it is possible to mine coal that is nearer to the earth's surface in a manner aptly called "surface mining". Years ago mining was done by hand with the use of picks, carts, and rails, but in present day machines have taken over the more strenuous labors.

Above it has been stated that coal is a highly combustible, yet brittle, rock. Both are true and because of these qualities coal is quite a dangerous substance as well. Coal mine disasters have been documented throughout history; many of which were caused by such things as mineshaft collapses, suffocation, gas poisoning, and explosions. The last item listed is most prominent - explosions are not only caused by firedamp gas or problems with machinated equipment. Coal dust is susceptible to spontaneous combustion and covers much more surface area than lumps of coal do. This leads to the expression that an empty coal silo is much more dangerous than a full one as the worst mining accidents in history were due to coal dust explosions, but the dangers of the dust are not only limited to such traumatic events.

Coal dust, is, of course, something that can be inhaled and because of that can cause diseases in the lung. Coal worker's pneumocoiosis - also called "black lung disease" as well as "miner's lung" - is the most outstanding result of constant coal dust inhalation. This disease can start off as a simple case of bronchitis, but with continued exposure develops into the more serious affliction as the human body cannot break down the dust in the lungs.

Home

The building Eglantine and Priscilla call home is a spacious manor house located in the sprawling lands to the south-west of Siren's Shore. The house is three stories with an attic and basement and contains - among other things - an entrance hall, two studies, a master bedroom, dining room, a small library, sun room, and three guest rooms (each with their own bathroom). The lands the house was built on are several acres in size and on the immediate grounds are a stable, carriage house, and sprawling garden.

The exterior of the building is Victorian Gothic architecture; red brick with many windows. There is a large porch out front that extends outward to partially cover the grey stone walkway, which winds up the front lawn from the drive. The drive itself extends far as the house is hidden from the main road by trees. Inside, the home is richly decorated and furnished. Hardwood is used all over the interior and it appears that each and every piece of the home has been given some form of character: from the twisting wooden columns that hold up the main staircase to the second floor to the painted trim at the base of each wall. Each room has its own color scheme so no room shares the same colors with any other, regardless if the walls are painted or wallpapered. However, despite being all different, the colors used are along the darker spectrum rather than pastels and are oft countered with lighter colored trim or accents. All of the rooms are spacious, but none feel as if they are not used as each are kept clean and well furnished. The house is kept warm by fireplaces, but in recent times Eglantine has been musing over the idea of getting an oil-heated furnace and keeping the fireplaces merely for decoration and for offhand use.

Family

Arthur Renly : Eglantine's father. He was the head of Renly Rails for forty years before having to retire due because of health reasons. He's a business minded fellow who tries to keep busy even in his retirement, to the point where he'll pass on ideas for the company to his daughter to implement when he gets them.

Charlotte Renly : Eglantine's mother; deceased. She passed two years ago from natural causes, but during her life was supportive of her daughter's choices during her twenties. All the same, she was still a worrier and regularly sent money and gifts, one of her last being a sizable sum of money to help pay for her daughter's current estate.

Jean LeMonte : Gardener/Housekeeper/Repairman/Odd Jobs Professional. Jean worked for Arthur Renly for over twenty years and was "included" with the house Eglantine purchased after coming home and taking over the family business. Eglantine firmly believes she doesn't need the man's assistance - preferring to do things for herself - but she can't bring herself to let the man go, given how loyal he has been to her father all this time. A quiet man with a portly build and walrus mustache, Jean is in his early sixties, but Eglantine isn't sure of his exact age.
