It was hard to say which time of day Ranger thought best. Early morning when all the modern world was silent at last, sated and stilled; mid-morning when the birds awoke and the ground was still wet with night's damp chill; evening when the shadows lengthened and the hills were kissed with the light of the dying sun; night, when the drama of life and death reached its climax under the veil of darkness. His favor changed from day to day, but today it was reserved all for afternoon. The leafless trees above the crusted snow cast tantalizing shadows on the crisp white. Branches formed a screen through the woods, and with all the leaves at last gone, there was simultaneously the feeling of open space and of intimate privacy. It was times like this that made the god's heart soar in the winter. All seemed quiet except for an icy stream not far away.

It never ceased to surprise Ranger how few people could be found in the woods this time of day--and year. What about the beauty? What about the feeling of wind through thick, bright fur? Couldn't everyone feel that? Apparently not, because there didn't seem to be a soul around but for the wild animals all around, camouflaged in their homes. Keeping his wings tucked against him to insulate himself from the cold, the enormous noodle once again lifted his nose to the air and drew scent through his tingling nostrils.

It had been a good day so far, and Zariah smiled to herself. Sure, life was stressful in her village, but out here away from the looming mountains and the royal duties she could relax. It hadn't taken as much convincing for her guards to let her go alone, as it never really did in the winter. She was free to go out and hunt, fish, prowl... And today she felt like fish.

It had taken a bit of time to rack up a little catch, for not many creatures of any kind came out when it was so cold. Zariah herself had added a little more fur to her jacket and leg warmers, for her fur was shorter than most and she was not the biggest fan of being cold. It was always worth it, though, to come out and spend some time alone, with so much sparkling beauty around her... Shifting her arrow of fish slung across her back, she decided to find a nice spot to settle down for a snack...

Another noodle was nearby; from the smell, a young female by the stream. As quietly as he could, the god slipped through the trees, his broad, brown wings tucked in close to his body to make it as narrow as possible. He didn't want to startle the stranger; in fact, in a voyeuristic, feral way, he didn't even want her to notice him. Creepy, it certainly sounded, but being unseen was just Ranger's style. He was the wilds, after all--and the wilds were quiet, unassuming, and, above all, cautious. He peered through the trees and branches at the stranger, and stranger she was--all dressed in furs not her own, decorated with glinting gems and finery. It wasn't anything overly ostentatious, but he had a feeling that this was a fox who spent most of her time in more finery than this. Whether this was as opulent as she got or not, though, it seemed like she was a bit...overdressed for the simple pastime of fishing. Sure, the fur was a good idea--the air was more than just "nippy"--but her presence seemed strange. She was also moving away from the stream, glinting fish slung over her shoulder. He resolved to follow her and find out who she was. He could only hope that his aura might hide his presence from her. On the mortal plane, however, it was hard to tell what his true powers were.

It didn't take Zariah long to settle on a leaning tree as the perfect spot to eat. It was an actual tree, so it was thick enough, but the way it grew and leaned gave her a decently level spot. She expertly climbed up, dropped her fish at her paws, and was about to take a bite when she noticed green from the direction she just came.

Huh? It was too white out to be green... but in a blink it was gone. That was odd... She stayed still for a moment, eyes darting through the trees and wishing the woods wasn't so thick. Shrugging, the vixen turned to her fish, pawing down the sharp fins and biting in.

There! Another glimpse of green. Alright, who was following her? Zariah stood up, sniffing the air but catching nothing. Great. Mentally sighing, she slowly laid back down and took another bite of fish, eyes trained on everything but her meal. She wasn't about to be drawn into a possible trap nor be caught off guard, so she figured letting whoever it was come to her was her best option.

Ranger kept out of view of the other fox, moving between trees with the grace of long practice. He was trying to make it so that the other noodle didn't see him, but he wasn't sure how long that could last. Animal noodles, ones who were part undomesticated animal, at least, seemed to be able to notice him sooner; plant noodles as well. Someone like this, in robes and finery and with a human-like head of hair? Probably not. He climbed up a thick tree above the leaning tree that the other fox was sitting on, such that he was sitting on a thick limb above her head.

It was a rude thing to do, but it was a playful one as well, and Ranger felt like being playful, even with someone he'd never met who was just trying to have a meal in a snowy, winter forest. Someone who probably had had to work hard to fish in winter. But still, no regrets. He reached down his tail to tickle his cheek, letting down his guard so that, should she look up, she could see him. There didn't seem to be much need to hide. If he had to, he could hide again. "How's the fish?" he murmured in a deep, warm chuckle.
