User ImageIt seemed like everytime this small, red cub opened his eyes, there was someone cooing over him and bright colors dangled over his head. These were the symbols he attached his life force to, the essence of home. The cooing also seemed to be coming from outside of the den his brothers and sisters were living in. Everytime he heard the high pitched squaking-coo noises the blonde tail tuff attached by a red vine to his emotions flicked happily and he began to purr. Akanni, as he was getting used to being called, was the eldest male out of the last litter born (in secret) before the Goddess of Peace arrived to the Kizingo'Zaa lands. His mother called him her little Song Dreamer, for when the birds began to sing for the cubs he would dance and purr right along.

Now that Akanni was getting a little stronger, he began to get more curious about the lights and noises outside of the den. One day after his post-feeding nap, he awoke to discover his siblings and mother were still passed out, it was the chirping that brought him to this plane; that, and his sister kicking him in her own dreamland. If he was going to discover what those noises were, now would be his chance. There were no mamas to pick him up, he wasn't worried that she would be upset at all, what kind of trouble could he possibly get into?

It's not surprising Akanni got out unnoticed, he's so small he makes barely no noise at all without trying. Now outside he began to wonder from the cave, trying to find the source of the noises. Perhaps it was another one of Mother's friends coming to see him and give him love, he needed to find out. But there were so many things bigger than him, he didn't even know where to look and he was now farther than he had imagined possible away from the den of safety.

It had been almost two moons since Ame had given birth and Dhoru still hadn't seen the cubs yet. He had visited as soon as he could after the birth, but then the cubs were too small and fragile and Ame had stood protectively outside of the den, as was typical with lionesses soon after having cubs. He had understood her desires to keep her cubs separate but still.. his paws itched with impatience about wanting to see his new nieces and nephews.

Now that the cubs were older - they had their eyes open and were beginning to play - he had been heading toward the den in the hopes that Ame would be awake and receptive. On the way, however, he had been informed that she and the cubs were asleep and was just about to turn back when he noticed movement at the mouth of the den.

"Asleep, huh? Maybe they're supposed to be, but this one didn't get the memo." Hasi echoed Dhoru's thoughts as a cub came ambling clumsily from the den. The bright red male was so tiny but Dhoru's heart shone with pride as he watched the cub stumble around.

Smiling, he padded toward the small creature. "Well, hello there, little one. I can only imagine you're not supposed to be out here alone. Lucky for you, I'm here. I'm your Uncle Dhoru. What's your name?"

Akanni had seen the large brown blob in the distance, but he had dismissed it as another one of the tall brown trees. When he heart the voice the cub literally lost his footing, tried to catch himself by crossing his paws but inevitably got stuck and fell over.

The cub laid there with an indignet huff for a moment, admiring this view of the trees with the green leaves then remembered whom he had heard and stood back up quickly. It took him a second to process the information coupled with a question to him. No one said he was the brightest crayon in the box.

"Akanini." Wait. That wasn't right. "Akanni." That's the one. He had meat another Uncle already, so this was sort of a familiar term. Dhuoro.. Dhoru." Satisfied now with his slight speech impediment under control he smiled and began to purr and weaving in and out of the lions paws, waiting for him to begin adorning him.

If this was a trap, take this cub away and call him Sally.
He mewed softly and looked up at the Uncle guy and mewed softly, "Hello."

Dhoru's whiskers twitched with amusement at the cub's trip-up. One of the many reasons he so adored cubs was their energetic clumsiness, but he hid his amusement for the cub's benefit.

"Mm, Akanni. So, Akanni, what are you doing out of the den?" His smile widened and he almost purred himself as the cub laced himself around his legs. Akanni certainly was comfortable around him, and so quickly!

As Akanni glanced up at him, and bright blue eyes locked with clear green ones, Dhoru could actually feel his heart melting with affection. The young lion was so trusting and innocent that Dhoru couldn't stop a purr from rumbling this time.

The purr from the older big brown lion posted a victory sign up for Akanni and he sported his pride with his head up high and a little bit of a trot in his step as he now walked in a circle around the four stumps the big tree walked on.

"Ohmuhgosh! The noises." Akanni paused and waited for the chirping to start again so he could identify it for his Uncle. Big lions like Dhoru were there to love, help and do whatever the cute cubby wanted them to in his opinion at this point, so of course he would help him find the origin of the noise.

When the birds chirped again he jumped up and down, "Find it find it find it!" Then he nodded ecstatically.

Uncertainty pricked momentarily at Dhoru - he wasn't sure he should take the cub anywhere without asking. But he quickly shook it away. No harm would come to Akanni with him there, and if he didn't take the cub birdwatching, he could only imagine that Akanni would go exploring on his own. Reaching a decision, he smiled broadly.

"Okay, Akanni. If you can follow me very quietly, I'll help you find the noises. But you must be quiet as a mouse, or you'll scare them off. Okay?"

Dhoru swiveled his ears around and zeroed in on the location of a bird with a particularly musical voice. It wasn't hard for him to pick it out from the rest - as a cub, he had fallen in love with the song and appearance of this bird, a pretty blue and brown creature that sometimes had bright red cheeks. Luckily, these birds were usually far enough out of reach that they wouldn't flee from an approaching lion.

Locating the bird by sound and scent, he awaited Akanni's agreement.

Akanni's electric blue eyes enlarged to the size of his oversized paws as he noted Uncle TreeStump here as awesomest in his world. Vigorously he nodded in agreement.

"Yeah yeahyeah!" But then he remembered the agreement and put his paws flat against his ears and tail between his legs. Oops. Like a mouse. For a moment he thought about how to interpret this, so he did so literally and flattened his body to the ground.

"Ready as a mouse." He whispered.

I literally laughed aloud at that post. Akanni is so darned cute!

The cub's adorable nature was almost too much for Dhoru to bear. Partly so the cub wouldn't feel silly - in the off chance that he might - Dhoru imitated his posture and dropped low. Jerking his head in the direction of the bird, he motioned for Akanni to follow him and started inching forward with his belly fur brushing the sand, glancing back periodically to ensure the cub was still close.

As they neared the trees, Dhoru caught sight of a small cluster of the birds overhead. They were chattering relentlessly as they hopped from branch to branch, picking at the bugs they found there. They were totally oblivious to the presence of the lions below them, and Dhoru doubted they would have cared even if they had seen them. He stopped and waited for Akanni to come within whispering range so he could point out "the noises".

Now it was Akanni's turn to mimic Uncle Tree, it hadn't occurred to him how to move this low to the ground until he saw the older lion. The red cub was doing so well, he allowed his attention to wander to a rock nearby and he lost his footing, skidding to the ground. "Oof." He managed to whisper.

Thankfully Uncle Tree had come to a stop. The limb had pointed in a direction Akanni hadn't looked in before, up to the top of the rest of the trees, and in them the most beautiful, colorful creatures he had ever, and figured would ever see. They made the most beautiful music, a purr rumbled deep in the pit of Akanni's chest and a bubbling in his stomach. This had been quite an adventure and now he was hungry, but too silently transfixed to notice.

The joy in Akanni's eyes brought a wide smile to Dhoru's lips. He had felt that joy once, when... Dhoru suddenly stopped short in wonder. He had felt that joy before when he was out in storms; while he still adored the storms, the loss of his muse had dulled the ecstasy.

Could it be possible that the birds are more than intriguing to Akanni?

"I don't see why not," Hasi stated plainly. "I understand that most of your pridemates don't have muses anymore, but that doesn't mean it's an impossibility. I'm sure there are individuals all over the world that have muses."

While Hasi definitely had a point, it was still shocking to Dhoru to consider that cubs were still being born into the pride with muses. Or even insanities. At this age, all Dhoru could do was wait; there was no chance that Akanni would even know what a muse was at this young age.

"They're pretty, aren't they?" he asked casually. But Dhoru couldn't shake the curiosity.

The most recent litter of the Queen would be the last to be gifted/cursed with the probability of muses for the Kizi. In life this would bring Akanni a sense of entitlement for a carefree lush lifestyle, but for now it meant a calling to a life force or a muse. When the Goddess left, her print remained in the young gypsy price's soul. But there weren't any words in the red cub's vocabulary to describe what he felt or thought of the 'they'.

"Yes. Perdy. What 'they'?" Fragmented phrases was the mark of Akanni's transfixed state. There was warmth in his chest, and a serenity he had yet to experience or have any other emotions so strong to compare it to thus far.

"They're called birds. Ones like these, with very sweet voices, are songbirds. Most songbirds are too small for even a single lion to make a meal out of, so they usually aren't afraid around us."

Dhoru sat and watched the birds contentedly as they hopped about. When he had first learned of muses, he remembered that he had thought the songbirds were his. Their beautiful melodies had mesmerized every time he heard them. Dhoru grinned as he reminisced about his muse - the storms couldn't have been more opposite from the songbirds.

Although he still felt complete tranquility during storms, Dhoru could no longer converse with them the way he once had; he could hear them whispering to him, but they would never respond when he spoke. He felt as though the storms were trying to reach him, and that he must only pass some sort of test to connect to them again - a test he would gladly take a million times if only he knew what it was.

A short and simple name for a short and simple creature, it was poetry. "Songbirds" Akanni repeated, for it was all he could really do. Very slowly the cub began to sway back and forth in rhythm to the captivating melody and he felt his eyelids getting heavy, then a larger than life yawn eclipsed his eyesight just long enough for them to realize they wanted to be shut. Rubbing his tongue on the roof of his mouth, Akanni made small wet clicking noises. The sleeping usually came next, and there was nothing he could do to prevent it at this point.

Very simply Akanni laid down, wrapped his tail around his rump and began to purr. He would be content to sleep here in the sun and listen to the songbird sing all day.

The cub's yawn attracted Dhoru's attention, who twitched his whiskers in amusement. While they were full of tremendous energy, most cubs Akanni's age slept quite a bit, and the poor thing must be missing out on a nap. Even as he thought it, Dhoru watched his nephew curl into a ball and begin to drift off right where he was.

Dhoru curled his body around Akanni and laid his tail protectively over him. The cub would greatly enjoy falling asleep to the songs of the birds, and Dhoru saw no reason not to let him. When he was sure that Akanni was deeply slumbering, he stood quietly and gently grabbed the cub's scruff between his teeth. Lifting him as softly as he could, he turned toward his sister's den and began to pad forward as slowly as he could, ensuring that he wouldn't jostle the sleeping cub in his jaws.

Dhoru had been walking so slowly in fact, that by the time he reached the den, his jaws were aching - not because Akanni was heavy, but from the effort of holding him tightly yet gently at the same time. Pushing forward into the den, careful not to wake any of his sleeping relatives, he placed Akanni down between two of his siblings. Taking a step back, he stood for a moment or two and admired the beautiful cubs - his nieces and nephews. He smiled softly as his eyes shone with fondness, then backed out of the den and padded away through the camp, determined to visit again when they were all awake.
