When Jove found out the name of the second student he was to be a "Big Brother" to, his first emotion was relief. One big dope of a dragon was enough, but this one had encountered him only on good terms in the past. And having a better sense of her from the start, Jove had prepared a map of a different variety.

With the rolled up map in hand, he once again waited outside the gymnasium for the student he would begin to mentor. It was frosty out, with a layer of snow on the ground, but he couldn't be bothered less by the temperature. Hopefully Ishild had gotten his letter... Ren didn't know for sure where her room was, so he had to ask some other students around the monster dorms... And only one or two remembered the ghoul with the fangs. Well, lots remembered the little chupacabra, but not the tall one with the spiked tail.

The little pup paced through the snow as he waited, although admittedly he had arrived early. Waiting in his room had been too difficult.

It wasn't hard to find the gymnasium. Next to the library, it was one of Ishild's favorite places. Nevertheless, she still managed to arrive rather late. The letter had arrived, but had immediately been confiscated by one of her staple gators who had then gotten into a fight with the book bats over using the letter as a nesting material.

By the time Ishild had realized the object of their kerfluffle was not, in fact a rejected report draft, the letter was, well, it looked like several minipets had been fighting over it and then tried to use it as bedding. The bulk of the message was clear: The location to meet her new mentor. The time and identity of her mentor, however, were not. Ishild had made a face and guessed, and now she was late, if the smaller figure she could see pacing ahead was any indication.

Her trek through the snow did much to ease her anxiety, as she approached: why had she signed up for this, what was she thinking? Well, the field trip to the scarefari hadn't gone so bad, afterall, she'd gotten to see a catbus.

Somehow Ishild didn't think there'd be a catbus this time. But that was okay. It was simply nice to walk around not assaulted by warmer temperatures.

But as she approached, she grinned. This was better than a catbus. She had only fond memories of the quiet boil waiting for her. "Hi! Jove!" She flushed, embarassed. "Haven't been waiting long, have you?"

Jove shook his head, a soft expression on his face that served as a smile would to any other student. No, she wasn't really late at all. Time could be pretty relative to a little ghost who didn't sleep or age, and she was here after all.

The pup's tail wagged as he handed her the map he had prepared, the heavy parchment rolled into a scroll and tied with a ribbon. It still smelled of ink and dust to his sensitive nose, despite the time he spent carefully marking down the important landmarks and making notes. It was not a map of Amityville like he had given his other 'sibling', rather, having a sense of the arctic wyvern ahead of time it was a map of the surrounding area. The less explored woods of the school grounds. The wild places.

Jove seemed content to hand the map over, unconcerned with whether Ishild opened it now or on her own time. He would show her now, and she could use the map to visit her favourite places later!

With a slight tilt of his head to beckon her to follow, the pup trotted off towards the woods without a word.

Ishild peered curiously at the map, hefting it in her hand. It had some nice weight to it, and being given to her by someone she was beginning to think of as more friend than acquaintance only added to it's gravitas. Her claws hovered hesitantly over the ribbon. She dearly wanted to know what the parchment contained. Scrolls brought to mind homework and notebooks, but also the quiet recesses found in the library at times.

However, the promise of going into the woods, a place she'd not yet talked herself into exploring (exploring would be awesome! but it also reminded her of home and all she'd run from), and with a guide no less, won out. Tucking the scroll safely away, she trotted after Jove.

It really was nice, to just walk along in a companionable silence, the only sound the soft crunch of the snow under their feet.

Jove had never been an overly sociable pup, and even with all his school experience the only sign he was still attending to his companion were the fluffy ears turned backwards. Occasionally they flicked forward or to one side, taking in the sounds of the woods, but mostly it was Ishild's footsteps he was listening for.

He took them deep into the woods, making a relatively good pace despite the height of the snow reaching up his little legs. But the deeper they got, the lighter the snow became, giving way to crisp, sheer ice. Everything seemed to have a glittering crystalline exoskeleton this far in. And when Jove finally stopped in the middle of a frozen pond, it was clear the ice would even take his larger companion's weight.

He seemed not chilled at all as he knelt down on the ice, and brushed the light dusting of snow away to reveal a deep blue interior. The pool was deep. So deep he hadn't even found the bottom in the summer. Probably not even Ishild, with all her height, could touch the bottom.

"Oh, wow."

Not a bit of the school could be seen. There was only tree and snow and so much ice. For a moment, Ishild could imagine she was home, without the need to close her eyes tightly.

Reverently, she trailed along after Jove, her tail twitching as she fought to contain herself.

This was so far beyond anything she had expected. She hadn't quite known how this mentor thing would go, but this...

This was amazing. She was speechless. She could only grin as she crouched along side him, peering down into that inky blackness, trying to see if anything was swimming down there, or even better, if there was anything frozen below. Her face came closer and closer to the ice, hoping to catch a glimpse of something, until she finally ended up in a most ridiculous position. Nose to the frozen surface with her tail up the in air.

Dignity? Who needed dignity. This was too cool. Was ice fishing allowed? She wanted to find out.

Jove's fluffy tail wagged behind him. This had definitely been a good idea, taking Ishild out into the woods instead of showing her notable places on campus. She seemed right at home in the ice and snow, shedding that ...frosty exterior completely.

Yup, this was what being a Big Brother felt like. He would have to show her all the places!

He briefly put one hand on her shoulder to catch her attention, and then took off across the pond. She would have plenty of time to revisit the pond on her own, it was marked on that map and still close enough to the school that it was one of the easier destinations to find. Jove would even go with her again if she wanted!

But for now, he wanted to keep moving. Their next destination wasn't too far off!

It was a good thing Jove had tapped her shoulder, as she was so engrossed in staring at the pond, nothing short of a loud bellow (directly in the ear) would have gotten her attention.

Normally she'd have asked (insisted) they stay for a little bit longer, or at least until she was completely satisfied there was nothing to be seen in the pond's depths, but the temptation of more places and things to see was hard for her to resist.

She hadn't felt this at ease or comfortable with the thought of seeing new things in... quite a while actually. A quick jog saw her falling into place next to Jove. It really was a bit of a challenge not to charge ahead and take the lead.

This was Jove's rodeo, and he'd had such a good start. It'd be only polite to let him stick to his plan. Her claws curled around the parchment tucked at her waist, and she fumbled to unroll it as they walked, just to check that it was what she'd suspected: a map. Ishild scanned it and ah, there it was! That was the pond they'd just left. Nodding, she rolled the map and tucked it away again. No staring at anything else, let the next destination be a surprise.

Jove's ears swiveled as Ishild caught up, and he watched out of the corner of his eye as she peeked at the map. He was right, she'd be able to find all these places without a problem later on. And just as long as she wasn't skipping classes to go wandering, he wouldn't mind running into her on his own solitary walks.

It was only a short time before the terrain began to change. The ground sloped down gently at first, and Jove had to take them almost uphill until they arrived at the edge of an icy precipice. It was a small creek, having worn itself into a ravine over years and years of spring floods and winter freezes. Tree roots protruded from the edges, and dripped icicles that shined even in the pale light. Even the soil had a mysterious glittery quality to it.

The pup walked along the edge of the ravine for a time, and then came upon a place where a tree had fallen across the gorge. It's dead branches had been mostly snapped off over the years, but one long and thick one had come to rest leading down the steep bank. Jove hopped down and walked along it's frozen length, remarkably free of slips or missteps in his heeled boots.

This was the best time to come here. While it was dangerous in another couple months after everything thawed and the October rains came, right now it was a cold paradise. Even the creek itself was frozen solid at the bottom of the ravine, and Jove walked right over it to the other side, where the soil seemed particularly shiny. His pale fingers scratched at the ice, and then at the soil, and pulled away a small flake covered in dirt so he could show it to Ishild. It was the mica in the earth that made it so shiny, even before the ice came.
PostPosted: Fri Feb 08, 2013 2:48 pm

Oooh, shiny. At first puzzled by Jove's behavior (was this a dog thing or a ghost thing? She didn't know enough about either to be sure...), she was soon crouched beside him doing her own clawing at the dirt. It seemed almost a shame to leave marks indicating their passage through this place, but, nothing bad was happening to Jove for doing so. It must be alright.

Besides, she wanted something a little more substantial than just memories after this mentor walk was done. A nice little shard of mica would do the trick, to say nothing of looking nicer in the meager hoard she'd started in her room. Traveling all the time meant no room for superfluous things, but now that she was in Amityville with a secure place to call her own, well, a few things here and there wouldn't hurt.

Successfully prying a small shard free, she carefully dusted it off on her pants before securing it in a pouch. Taking one last look around the frozen creek, she gave a contented sigh. She turned to Jove and asked, "Where to next, Mentor?"

The pup wagged his tail. He was connecting! Even though Ishild was a good foot taller than he was, Jove felt proud to be a 'big brother' at that moment. She seemed like she was having a good time, and even if she didn't understand his behavior at times, she had an inquisitive mind, and soon realized what it was that made these locations remarkable.

And she wanted to keep going without pausing for a snack break! Not that he couldn't provide something to munch on, it just would have meant a long detour and possibly an even longer search through the snow. His nose was good, but such a thick layer of ice crystals made picking up ground scents more difficult.

Jove took them back up the dead tree branch and across the little creek, and deeper into the snowy woods. It was a long walk. The trees, bare of leaves above, started giving way to small pines, and then even larger pines, with drifts of snow piling up in between them. The little ghost began having a hard time wading through it, even using his invisible tendrils to push snow out of his way as he moved forward.

At first, Ishild was oblivious to Jove's struggles. This was just like traveling back home! And she lost herself in enjoying the scenery and the brisk cold air. Although, as she thought about it, things were much faster when you had access to sledges.

She'd turned to call out to Jove and paused, having noticed his difficulties. And the weird way snow was pushing itself out of his way. Weird. Must be a ghost thing.

Well, she knew a way around that. Switching between forms kind of reminded her of stretching. Speaking of which... she wriggled her neck about until it popped. Oh Jack, that was nice. It felt good to have wings again too. That was one thing she missed about her natural form. She gave them a quick flex: yep, everything was in working order.

Calisthenics out of the way, she crouched down, inviting Jove for a ride. "Barioth-brand taxi services, at your disposal."

Jove was initially startled to see Ishild's massive natural form, but the shock wore off quickly. His brother had a big natural form too, not quite that big, but big enough. And gryphon-rides were probably similar enough to arctic-wyvern-rides...

With a grateful tail wag, Jove scrambled up onto Ishild's spiky back, using his ghost tendrils to help with the ascent. It must have felt peculiar, having so many little fingers grasping and tugging, but the pup was incredibly light, even when considering his small size. When he finally reached the top, he sat down right on her shoulders, little legs danging on either side of her neck.

He wagged is tail and looked around. He could see so much from up here! If only he were a taller student, maybe he could enjoy this sort of view more often.
