He was in a tournament.
A fighting tournament.
He did not know how to fight! Oh Goddess why was he here again?!
Phirun stood awkwardly in the ring, awaiting his 'opponent' and trying not to just forfeit right then and there and flee the eyes of the crowd! This was... much more attention then he was used to having on himself. And for a shy boy like him, that was just about enough to make the pale Lunarian faint from fear. Except... except his father was in that crowd! And his uncle. There was no way he could flee before the fight began and disappoint his father! He knew how much having his son participate in this tournament meant to Chhan Rith! Even if his father had told him it really was alright not to participate, Phirun couldn't bring himself to not do it.
Besides, Uncle had said it would be an great chance for him to learn about fighting first hand. And maybe find a spark to his own fighting style.
Sighing and shifting his weight awkwardly from one foot to the other, Phirun bashfully glanced towards the opposite side of the ring as movement caught his eye. There was a... girl. A muscular female Lunarian. That could probably snap him in half like a mere twig! Phirun blinked, attempting to ignore the bead of sweat trickling down the back of his neck. Oh... oh Goddess... his hand curled tightly around the slim wooden staff he'd chosen to fight with. The referee smacked the dong... and he jumped nearly out of his skin! He... he had no idea what he was supposed to do, so in a spurt of fear, Phirun just blindly charged the other. [Points: 7 / 30 ]

Yujin hopped from foot to foot, her twin braids swaying back and forth in time with her movement. Bright eyes sized up the boy standing in front of her—he was just a kid! From the looks of it, he had no idea what he was doing too, a stark contrast with her lively form.
Oh, she oozed confidence. So much so, that she hadn’t even bothered to bring a weapon to this first match. Yujin had decided to fight with her bare hands this time around. Punching the air in front of her a few times just before the gong was hit, she got ready to charge. “Good luck, kid. You’re gonna need it.”
She sidestepped the boy easily enough. Actually, she hadn’t needed to do much of anything, because he was on course to miss her by a few inches, anyway. Closing one bandaged hand in a fist, she sent it swinging toward the boy’s shoulder right as he was about to pass her. “Hey – I’m over here!”

Right she was! Phirun had no idea what he was doing, and it was painfully and embarrassingly obvious. But he still was searching for what sort of style fit him. It was difficult! And he had yet to meet any others - those that were already Soul Conduits - that experienced the things he did. Just thinking about those cold presences of 'something' made the Lunarian shiver and go even paler.
Which went brilliant red as his shoulder was struck and he stumbled, almost tripping over his own feet! "O-Oh!" Dear sweet Goddess!
Phirun spun around a little too fast, tangling his feet and going down on a knee. His breathing was rapid and the look on his face was fearful. Like being around g-girls wasn't awkward enough! He had to fight one. Or... err, do a lot of flailing and hope to the Goddess he hit her.
"I-I... I'm so-sorry." He squeaked, getting to his feet and clinging to that wooden staff like it was a lifeline. Breathe. Y-You've seen Father practice with Uncle!
Trying desperately to get this right, Phirun held the staff almost like a bat of sorts, stepping towards his opponent and swinging with all the might he possessed. Which... wasn't much coming from his willowy frame.[Points: 13 / 30 ]

The woman raised her eyebrows, still hopping on either foot as she watched the kid trip and tumble. The poor thing sounded terrified of her, and she almost didn’t have the heart to fight him.
Yujin needed the prize money, though, as much as the next Lunarian. She was in serious debt on her house and the family business was in the red, and that was more important than the feelings of any boy she was matched against right now. She’d let him get to his feet again before striking.
What she wasn’t prepared for was the wild way in which he swung his staff. Leaping backwards just a split second too late, the end of the stick caught her by the foot and she tumbled to the ground, much to her surprise. Frowning now, Yujin jumped back onto her feet, swinging one bandaged leg out as she did so in an attempt to trip the boy.
“It’s nothing personal, hun.”

Why did she hop from foot to foot like that? Was there something in her shoe? Or maybe the ground was too warm? Then again... hadn't he seen other fighters do that? Maybe it was just a fighting thing he lacked the experience for. Like this battle was proving. If you could call it one. Phirun personally thought of it as flailing for his life.
O-Oh! Oh goodness he'd made contact! "OhmyGoddess! I'm sorry!" The boy squeaked, a stricken look appearing along his face. And then she was back on her feet and-
"Yeeeeek!" Down he went with a crash and a puff of air being expelled from his body. His butt hurt from that fall and the younger Lunarian just blinked up at her with a sort of dazed look.
"N-Nothing... p-personal?" Well that was slightly encouraging, right? So she probably wouldn't be mad at him if he accidentally hit her again? Of course before he could do that, he needed to actually get back up. So in a not so graceful attempt, Phirun scrambled to his feet and held his staff out in front of him like a shield. Swallowing, heart threatening to explode from his chest, he lunged forward with the intent of slamming his staff into her. [Points: 20 / 30 ]

The boy’s words startled a laugh out of Yujin as she watched him trip and fall, although it appeared more like she was laughing that he’d taken a tumble.
“Kid, you’re gonna need to stop apologizing for everything you do,” she said, a crooked smile forming on her face while she waited for him to right himself. She certainly wasn’t going to be doing any apologizing anytime soon. “Save your breath for the fight.”
The next swing of wooden stick, she was saw coming, and she ducked hard to the left as he approached, snaking a fist up from under him. Her second fist was quick to follow, heading right for the chin.

There was a startled and pained cry from the pale Lunarian as her fists caught him in the stomach and chin. He fell hard to the ground, gasping for air and blinking hard to keep tears from streaming down his cheeks. Oh gosh that had hurt!
"I... I-I'm... sorry." He gasped out before he caught himself, biting his lip. It took him longer to get back on his feet this time, not at all accustomed to getting hit like that. Once up, his legs shook as wide indigo eyes watched the woman. Clearly, she was trained to fight! And he? He was a quiet, good grades, on confrontational type!
Shaking visibly now, Phirun tried to ignore the pain he felt, and the thought of more. His father was here. He had to do his best! Okay. Okay, what had she done that had been successful? Not having any idea on what sort of fighting he was best suited for (aside from the non-violent type), Phirun raised his staff in a defensive manner, standing his ground and trying to focus on what he was doing instead of blindly stumbling after her.
When he thought he had an idea that could work, Phirun stepped forward, keeping his back foot on the ground, and jabbed the staff forwards, angling it slightly up towards her chin. [Points: 27 / 30 ]

“Hn,” the woman chuckled a bit, seeing that her words had had little effect on the boy. She rubbed the back of her head somewhat awkwardly, as if she felt bad for the one-sided way the fight was turning out. There was no helping it—she was clearly trained, and he had no idea what to do with the staff he was holding. “Sorry that you’re sorry, then.”
It was just about over, anyway. Reflexes saved her when the staff twitched, and she ducked again to the side, this time aiming a kick across the boy’s legs. Rolling up from behind as he reacted, she pulled her arm around his neck, tightening her biceps to put him in a sleeper hold. “A word of advice, hun. Don’t come back to these things until you’re ready for it – everyone else will skin you alive.”

Oh, she was sorry that he was sorry? Wait... that was confusing. This whole thing was confusing! But he tried. Really, he did! He just had no damn idea how to fight. It had been clear from the very beginning who the winner of this battle would be. So he was not surprised when she dodged his more calculated attempt at an attack... only to have the backs of his legs kicked. The maneuver threatened to send him sprawling to the ground again, his only savior the staff he gripped. It slammed into the ground, keeping him upright. An arm snaked around his neck...
And it was finished. He dropped the staff, hands scrabbling fearfully at the arm around his neck. His heart thumped so loudly that he was sure she could hear it.
"F-Forfeit! I-I... I'm sorr- I mean... y-yes, ma'am." He squeaked out, face a brilliant red (and a nice shinier appearing along his chin). "F-Forgive me, ma'am, for being.... an u-unworthy... opponent." Phirun mumbled in a small voice, taking her advice to heart. Oh yes, he would not be trying this again until he'd learned... how to at least defend himself! He was definitely having a talk with Father and Uncle after this.
