Research. It was one of the hallmarks of the Death Division. It was also one of Madison's least favorite things in the whole world - she'd much rather be (metaphorically) muckraking, planting rumors and sowing seeds of discord and ******** across Halloween. Instead, she was stuck in the stacks, chasing down... what?

Well, if by the stacks you meant a library computer, using the Life Labs' version of Google. Madison squinted as she scrolled down, down, down through lists of search results. The catalog of information that Deus Ex had managed to obtain over its centuries of existence was rather massive, and Madison was just grateful that so much of it appeared to have been digitized, no doubt due to some poor trainee saps of yesteryear. She saluted them, even as she slumped in her chair.

At least she wasn't paging through books, after all.

"Artifacts. Ugh. Gods... this s**t has to be made up. Has to be," she muttered, loudly enough for someone passing by to overhear. Should anyone be nearby.

Ahem.

Researching wasn’t his favorite aspect of his division, but it wasn’t his worst either. It was something Wilson had done plenty of times in college, and it seemed he would still do it plenty more in the future. He silently entered the library, strolling backwards and head tilted back to stare at the top of the book shelves. He turned around to rifle through a stray stack of books abandoned on one of the tables. Upon realizing it wasn’t what he was looking for he frowned and picked up the pile. He glanced at the other hunter inside the library. Wilson could glimpse the golden scythes emblazoned on her coat, but he couldn’t gather anything else from her backview.

She probably wasn’t in the mood to socialize anyways. He continued to put away the books while pulling out others to read through later. Wilson paused as he heard her mutter. “Artifacts?” he repeated, leaning forward with a small pile of books in his arms. “Actually, I went to a labyrinth with others. I found a staff there, but I had to turn it into this.” He adjusted his hold on his books to reveal a silver necklace dangling around his neck. “If you research enough, I’m sure you can find its location,” Wilson offered tentatively with a smile.

It took a moment for Madison to process that someone was actually talking to her; she turned and blinked owlishly before focusing on the newcomer completely. "Ugh - sorry, this crap numbs my brain," she complained, with a sheepish grin. "I'm not so hot on this particular part of Death work..."

He looked familiar, somehow, but she couldn't quite place the name. "Sorry, uh. You're...? I'm Madison," she added, offering her name first. "And I'll take any leads you have. Anything to finish up this assignment, seriously."

Wilson smiled politely. “I’m sure you’ll get used to it once you do this enough times. I did it plenty of times in college, so this isn’t particularly difficult for me,” he answered.

“Oh, sorry about that. Wilson. My name’s Wilson.” He walked over to her computer and set down his books. “So you’re looking for…” Wilson leaned closer to the screen. “An altar of the gods?” The hunter brought a finger to his lips. “Try searching parthenon on the computer while I look through the books. It’ll take a while, but I think we’ll at least find something useful by the end of the day.”

"The Parthenon?" Madison looked skeptical. "But that's just ruined ancient stuff - ugh, don't tell me all that is real too? First Halloween, now this? Some of the Greek gods were real little shits, too-"

Belatedly, she realized that calling potentially-real divine beings little shits was probably not such a good idea. "Well, if you found an artifact, then you'd know if it's real or not. Sorry," she said with an apologetic smile. "Nothing gets me grumpier quicker than books, I guess. So what is that thing you found?"

“Well, back then what were people afraid of?” Wilson reasoned. He shook his head. “No, it’s fine. What I found? It was…” He held up one hand to reveal a necklace loosely wrapped around his wrist. “It was originally a staff. I asked the techs to change the form so it was easier to carry around. Anyways, I’ll go look through the books.” He pointed a thumb at the rest of the library. “Call me if you’ve found something."

"A staff? Really? Huh." Madison peered at the bit of jewelry, bemused, then looked up to Wilson again. "Thanks - I appreciate it. I've been in here all day," she added, giving him a weary but grateful smile.

She typed in what he'd indicated, then leaned in, peering at the results. Greece... but that place was a ruin, long since picked, pecked, and preserved by archaeologists, every bit of supernatural property scrubbed away by the passing of millions of tourists. What she was looking for had to be something still redolent with that history... something hidden. Maybe somewhere else. Some other ancient place.

Ancient monuments... hm. What else was ancient? She'd had a unit on Egypt once, in school. Hm. Maybe there was something there. It was true that tourists had well overrun the Pyramids, but the shifting desert sands held secrets that were still being discovered. It made sense that there might be more there than met the eye.

After a few hours of serious searching, she found what she was looking for in the bowels of the Hunter intranet. She tapped the file over to her runic tablet device, then went looking for Wilson...

"Hey! I think I found something. Not in Greece, though..."

“Yeah. Had a little snake coiled around it.” He sounded amused as he twirled his finger and looked at the necklace. “Yeah, no problem.”

On one hand, there were a myriad of sources that talked about Greece, but they were all basic and pertained to aspects Wilson could care less at the moment. Digging through the books for pertinent information was slow and laborious, but as time passed he gradually grew closer to what he was searching for. He snapped out of his daze as Madison called out. “Did you? That’s great.” He closed the book he was reading and walked back to the computer. It took him a few seconds to skim the contents, but he grinned afterwards. “Sounds good to me. Now we have to go and find the portal that'll get us there.”

We don't want you to find a snake. We are enough snake for you, Kouki complained as Madison showed off what she'd found. Madison just rolled her eyes and ignored him - he had no reason to be insecure over this, of all things!

"Oh, god. Golem duty? No.." Madison squinted at the file, then let out a low whistle. "No golems? Damn. That's... that's ballsy. Sounds fun. I like it." Her grin had a bit of tooth to it. "So what about this we? Inviting yourself along? Though, don't get me wrong. I'd love some help on this one," she said, quickly. Just in case he wasn't the type who got teasing. There were plenty of those on this island.

If he was a dog, his ears would’ve flattened against his head with embarrassment, but instead Wilson just smiled sheepishly. “Sorry about that. Looks like I got a bit carried away, huh?” He grinned at her. “But I’m glad I can tag along. You never know what you could encounter down there.”

Again he nodded his head as he began to leave the library. “Yeah, no golems, but we can’t stay there for long. I’d say half an hour is our limit before we have to try again later.”

Aaaah portal hopping. Wilson didn't miss you at all. Nope.

And landed in the middle of a tundra. Crap.

Madison had never been in Halloween without a golem before - and small wonder why. She felt strange, as if her skin was slowly becoming too small for her body. It was a very odd feeling, almost... itchy. And definitely very very disconcerting. "And we do this without golems why, again?" she complained, taking a deep breath. Even the air seemed wrong, in a way that it didn't when she was inside a golem.

But this place was where the portals could be found, and she wanted to claim the power of these so-called gods. If only so she could complete her mission, and maybe get one-up on the freaks that called this damn world home.

Too bad the first portal dumped her into somewhere freezing. A nearby snowbank looked up and began to growl.

NOT ********! Bears!" She dove back through the portal into the relative safety of Halloween.

edited - necropolis location rules are as follows:

- Rolling 50 or less will let players find a portal that takes them to the frigid tundra, near a certain abandoned base that some older Hunters might remember. Some polar bears have taken up residence here, and gosh aren't they hungry? Better run!
- Rolling 70 or less will let players find a portal to an alley near a busy street marketplace in Cairo, Egypt, and a street vendor mistakes you for someone that stole some of his wares. Yikes!
- Rolling 80 or less will lead you to the Haunted House.
- Rolling 81 or higher will let you find the portal! Success! You can now proceed inside.

“To be honest, I can’t remember,” Wilson answered back as he walked in behind Madison. He shuddered and hugged himself. Where was his uual winter clothes when he needed it? “Yeahhhh. Um. It’s going to take a while, finding the portal, I mean. It took me quite a bit last time as well. We might even need to take a break here and there. No golems and all that. I think half an hour is the maximum?” He shrugged at her before walking out to try and finding the actual portal this time.

Madison was thoroughly nonplussed, but she kept going, sticking her head through the next portal. She was starting to feel vaguely feverish, almost, though she was sure it was just the effect of the FEAR around her.

On the plus side, the arctic chill felt instantly cooling. On the bad side, she was beginning to feel like the mole in a game of whack-a-mole... and the polar bears were the players.

Bears. So many bears. For a moment, Madison considered fighting them... but well. Polar bears were endangered, right? Right.

This was getting old...
