They were so very close to mom, each and every one of them; this in both the way of proximity and of heart. Wandering eyes of a passerby would not be able to argue against it. Those who came to know them well would find it difficult to fault.

Or at least that is what one youngster thought.

The cubs of Katavi's litter had a very common and yet very unique form of love shared. To them, her parenting was perfect. It came naturally to her, and gave to them everything they appeared to need. So what if one sibling seemed to get more attention than the other? Mother knew them all best. Better, at times, then Kamau believed he knew himself! She understood her children...

Or at least that is what Kamau thought.

"What do you think?" The male whispered to no one in particular. Nearby, the family milled idly in the shade close enough to monitor, yet far enough away to give him privacy. After all, he had to be quick about his task; quick and quiet! Mother couldn't find out about the tiny bird he had captured, plucked, and skinned. Her charm would be ready by nightfall so long as he didn't run into any...complications! Only then would she be the proud owner of a freshly snapped chick skull...as clean and intact as his fumbling paws can manage.

"What do you think?" Again he muttered, face taught in a grin. And again, to no one in particular.

Mkali was just resting her eyes. it was another day, for her, and the others. she relized one brother was gone in particular, but that was normal, seeing as he was a bit...odd. "Maybe i should go check and see that he hasnt got into trouble" she knew it really wasnt that important, and she could waste her time away with something else, but she never knew what her brother Kamau did in his 'alone time' which was almost all the time in the day. She sighed, not wanting to pick herself up on the ground. she huffed around some more and looked around the bushes more.

"oh Kamau...come out come out." she said lightly in a whimsical voice. She knew it might surprise him, so it made it fun, and then she decided to maybe bug him. it was, after all, one of her favorite pass times. she grinned and continued looking around the bushes and behind rocks, where he might be doing some sort of odd thing to try and impress mother. But even Mkali knew that Iva was her favorite, and there was no changing that, she did look the most like Katavi, and Mkali almost looked nothing like her.

The wind blew a scent up to her small nose, and she smelt her brother. "there you are..." she grinned, she didnt want to give away her spot just yet, and the wind was working in her favor, as it was keeping scents away from her brother and towards her, keeping her hidden. she decided now was the time, so she walked into the clump of bush he was hiding in, and huffed at him "and what might you be doing?"

"Careful with that!" The cub at play scolded, a sharp gasp taken before his body wriggled about; readjusting his weight onto his side.

"Oh Kamau"

Silence could be his only company for so long. The siblings he grew up with were fond of causing havoc and chaos amongst each other--and Kamau was often one to participate! Yet it was sometimes difficult to distinguish the calls of his siblings from the calls...elsewhere. Closer to home. An ear flicked forward, tossing a few red strands of his growing mane into sweeping blue eyes. From where he lay, both rolled to the side from which a very familiar, yet distant voice had resounded. From where he thought he had heard it come from. Silence befell the area almost immediately after he took notice, but still both of his bloodied paws paused in their efforts. "Hmm? Did you say something?"

Nothing. Silence, again. His greatest friend.

But the dark cub gave his inquiry time. Scrambling to his feet, Kamau lifted onto his toes just seconds after Mkali slipped into the bush. The family seemed equally as distracted as he had been...and he would not notice the white female's missing form until it leapt upon him in surprise.

"Mkali!" He huffed, a wide grin spreading across his lips despite the bothered tone in his voice. The item he had been working on slipped conveniently behind a paw and remained hidden from her sights...for now. "What were you doing in there?"

She chuckled, this brother had always been odd. "pff, i was bored. so i came to bother you" she grinned maliciously at him and looked at his paws, then she smelt something, it smelt...rotten. "gross kamau! what is that!?" she backed away from him, gathering herself in her steps. she couldnt be too grossed out, what would mother say!? she sighed again and kept staring at his fumbling, dirty paws. she strained not to smell that gross smell that was wafting around Kamau. "Ugh, what would mother say to you?" she was likely going to hit a soft spot there, but she was still a little worried about her brother. why was he like this? what caused him to be like this? questions floated about her head like flies on a dead, rotting carcass. the smell hit her nose a third time and she begged the wind to come, and she backed away even further.

Then, she walked forward. she needed to be brave, she couldnt keep being intimidated by her brother's unusual mind and actions. he was always doing something like this, and mother would find out sooner or later, and then Mkali would be nicer, maybe even nicer today, she just didnt want him to cry. she hated when she heard crying. it made her want to cuddle them. tell them everything would be fine. deep down she knew she had love for her brother and all her other siblings too, even Iva, who was mothers favorite.

she lied down, close to the bush, and a great wind blew the smell away, and Mkali was oh so greatful for it.

"Aw, Mkali..." Kamau whined, ears flattening back against his skull. There was a tenderness about him suddenly, as if his extreme excitement for such a morbid activity had been nothing but a dream. Still covered in blood and smelling of that ripened iron...Despite all that was against him then, he was no oddball in that moment but a cub like any other. "You're not bothering me. Don't think like that..." And she wasn't, not completely. There was a softness in him when it came to his family, certainly, and even if his bizarre interests were not comforting to those he loved, and even if the tinkering he had been doing would have to wait...they would come first and never be much of a bother.

Usually.

But as it was in his nature, normality could only last for so long. Reverting back to a state of oddity, the blue eyes of Kamau flashed his sister a wired look before muttering, "--huh?" She began to reel backwards, and he in turn looked each of his sides fervently as if waiting for the reprimand to come. Her disgust was, at first, baffling to the small cub who had then lifted a bloody paw and wiggled it. Before speaking, Kamau gave the shrubs separating them from the family a long, hard stare.

"What? Mkali do you mean this?" Crimson had already begun to dry on the whites of his toes, but tiny droplets would gradually begin to fall. And he would tilt his head to watch one.

This momentary distraction, this fascination he had with the red of blood and the taste of it, the smell, and the feel of it against his skin...it made her following words all the more alarming.

What would mother say to you?

It was then that Kamau's features began to twist. Worry, fear, and a heavy brow hinted toward anger. "You're not going to tell her, are you Mkali?" He stepped forward quickly, tail whipping at his side. His concern was not of Katavi finding him in the pool of a birds innards--but of her finding out of the bird at all. Of her trinket. It was meant to be a surprise, one that only he was suppose to know about.

"Please Mkali! Don't tell mom! This is a secret!"

She had to keep herself from laughing out loud. this was just where she wanted him. but her thoughts were reminding her of karma, and how this could affect her someday...she shook her head quickly. "no, i wont tell mother, i think i love you too much" she grinned at him and made a move to pounce on his side gently.

"But...you could tell me what your doing" she sat there now, with her head looking at the bird with guts spilt all over the place, some dry droplets of blood were on Kamau's little white toes too. her brother was certainly weird. Mkali now found herself sympathizing with her brother, not bothering him like she meant to in the the first place. she sighed and waited for Kamau to speak again.

the faint smell of drying blood hit her nose, but she didnt mind blood smell, the rotting carcass Kamau had, was too much, even for a grown feline, unless their nose was broken. Mkali gave a mental shrug and her mind began to wonder what Kamau was really doing. she huffed at him to hurry up, and began to play with the dirt at her paws.

If it were any other day, and if he were doing anything but the work of a craftsman-- Kamau would have taken his sister's leap and pounce as a great sign of affection.

It all happened in slow motion. The cub became as still as stone, a state mixed from worry and shock, fully aware that she aimed to flatten him out on the ground and that he was unable to do anything about it. He would try to shift in place, but the thought of doing so became much easier than the act of it.

...Maybe it wasn't the fact that Kamau was stunned stiff by her antics, but more so that he reacted slower than most in all cases. The thought did pass his mind as she moved forward. Perhaps Kamau thought too much, and never acted enough.

Either way, before the dark cub had a chance to maneuver around the collection of bones they were breaking beneath the weight of two lions. Very few shards broke through the loose skin of his back, but it was enough to prompt a reaction.

Crack!

"Ahhg!" Kamau cried out in tone no clearly an emotion but rage. The cub who could hide his disdain, but who usually had no reason to do so was... angry. Visibly shaken. It was in his voice, the crack of it, and in his face, the way it twisted and turned into an ugly scowl. His brow at first rose to widen his gaze in shock, but would narrow in disappointment soon after. "Mkali..." The young boy whined. He moved to gather the unsalvageable bits, a slight tremor to his walk. "This was..." Again Kamau's voice strained, composure lost within him. "I was..."

Turning to face her over a shoulder, the cub gave his sister a final, foul look before snapping. "This was important! I was making this for mom! Now look!" Clumsily, Kamau turned and scooted the pile toward Mkali. A final snort and a fluffed up chest would come to pass before he would continue. "Look what you've done!"

((Sorry it took so long! ;; LOOK DRAMA! <3 Oh how simple life is as a cub. ))

Mkali backed away slowly. she never liked it when any one got angry at her, even if it was her brother. "im sorry...i..." she was at a loss for words, she couldnt think what to say, looking away from the bile of shattered bones, she whispered the words "im sorry Kamau...i hadnt known..." she was so sad for him. she had known how Kamau had thought of mother. look what she had done now, making a mess of everything her brother had worked on so proudly.

"i see what i've done...im, im so sorry." she dipped her head at her angry, sad brother. she had probaby ruined the trinket kamau was making for mother, and she would be blamed, because it was her actions that had done this.
