Pheonix awoke to the sound of the wind mulling about in the cave. It had been some time since she and Ahadzen had found this place high up in the mountains and it was oddly comfortable. Whatever made this hole in the earth did it in such a way that the structure would remain for a long time. Her ears flicked as she looked over toward Ahadzen who seemed to be sleeping still. His voices had bothered him it seemed, but she wondered had they gotten any closer to finding the truth.
The mare slowly rose to her hooves careful not to make much sound so as not to wake her sleeping herd-mate and traveled out of the cave. She was careful to maneuver the rocks so that she could climb a little higher to the outcropping above. She and Ahadzen liked to come up here sometime to watch the land below as well as the sun falling and rising. But lately she hadn't been doing much watching of the landscape.
Pheonix felt a sense of...well what was the word now...adoration? Some sort of adoration for Ahadzen. Since their time together, he always looked out for her. Told her to live and think for herself. Attempted to teach her what life was about. And in return, she offered a shoulder for him to take out his grievances on. When they first met, he was thrashing in clover fields speaking to an invisible source. Since then, his voices had seemed not to bother him. If they did, he didn't exactly tell her. But Ahadzen never really told her anything. Pheonix had picked up on some of his moods and adjusted herself to take care of him as much as she could, in her own little way of course. If only she could sense what he was really thinking in that head of his...and if only she could make sense of her feelings right now. The mare stared out at the lands below basking in the glow of the half moon as she settled her body onto the cool stone. She wished there was something out there that could give her some sort of sign.

Ahadzen was deep in slumber, just like how he was for half of the day now. Maybe it was just because it was colder up here, so he would have to save up his heat and energy for when he was awake, exploring the scenery and cliffs with Pheonix. Odd how his dreams would simply revolve around what the two have been through. He was even able to hear the sairys, Penelope sing sometimes through the mountainous airs. That was practically his lullaby when she was flying around.
The stallion was lost in his dream. He was wandering around Sandar Lakes where the whispers began getting louder, and louder, calling his name. He wanted to break free of them, but just could not. Not even in his dreams. Knowing that he would awaken Pheonix if he were to make any sudden movement, he kept the screams inside of him. Not that they would really help since it turned out to be that she was already awake.
Ahadzen.. wake up.. His eyes fought to open once he heard the voice say something rather than his name. Jerking his head up, he found the mare that he was travelling with already up, and did too, get up to stand at the mouth of the cave to spot his striped friend in the moonlight. Smiling, he stood watching, wondering if this was the freedom and life that he promised to help her find, to be free from her 'master' that she was speaking about when they met. Hopefully he was setting her onto the right path. How close were they to reaching their goals in life though? The shine on her gave him hope, but this, he knew, this was Pheonix's moment of being alone. In peace? In confusion? He did not know.

Pheonix felt eyes upon her frame. She turned in time to meet Ahadzen's golden gaze. She couldn't help but give a small smile before flashing it away quickly as she rose to her feet. She snorted flicking her head toward her so that he may join her on the ledge. "I didn't think you were awake. Did I disturb you?"] The mare asked him tilting her head a little as the wind started to play with her mane and tail, the feathers attached to the latter starting to make a rustling sound in the wind.
She began to wonder if he was even sleeping at all. Even though most of the days he lay in a deep sleep, she often saw him moving as if he was running, or grunting and groaning in something inaudible. Was his voices back again? She dare not ask him of his voices in fear of irritating him like she did the last time. Pheonix was starting to better understand feelings and social cues, especially with her time around Ahadzen and the goat-azrein Freezia along with her sairys, Penelope. They made quite the little group, but Freezia was nowhere to be found these days. She was probably so happy in the mountains that she made a little nest for herself if anything. Pheonix strangely felt at home in this structure as well, especially in the burnt cave. She often wondered why she felt such a connection there, her pendant giving a gentle reminder against her chest as if urging her to remember what she once was.
"Something on your mind, Ahadda? She asked again. Pheonix was always one to ask questions out of the two it seemed as she attempted to study him. Ahadzen always looked deep in thought, and she often got a response if she used the nickname she had come up with for him a while back. It was more of an accident really, she had chocked on some vegetation while speaking - something he repeatedly told her not to do - and it just stuck. She liked the way it sounded and it reminded her of the smile he got on his face even as he attempted not to laugh at her misfortune with food. Speaking of which, when was the last time she ate? The mare needed to keep track of her eating...

Being his stubborn self, Ahadzen did not want to reply, but couldn't help but chuckle a bit at the nickname Pheonix gave him a while back. Should he tell her now, or later? Would later mean that he might lose her? The scales on his back were beginning to become as hard as ice, but that did not matter to him. Pulling his ears back, swaying his tail side to side, he stared at his herdmate, knowing that she spent most of her past few days taking care of him, aiding the kirin at mastering the cliffs, rather than taking care of herself for a while. Regret filled him, and he did not enjoy that sour, dark taste in him.
Yes,... tell her... the whispers went. To cover up the voices that were only heard by himself, Ahadzen snorted a snort like no other, eventually accepting the invitation to stand beside the mare on the ledge. He needed to tell her, but now was not the right time now that he seen Pheonix's condition. He himself, would just have to wait for another time to spill what the voice inside of him was saying.
"Phee..." he began, not really knowing what to say, "do you want to eat now? It's been a while since you have had the time to your own... needs.." He hoped that he said it right, after knowing her for such a long time, but it had never occurred to him that she was helping him much more than he was to her. "We haven't seen much water for a while."

As much as Pheonix went without eating, she was a huge glutton once she got the chance. Always tasting the areas different fauna which often landed her in digestive troubles sometimes. Ahadzen had always been there to help her through and remind her which ones not to eat. He had always been such a patience friend as well with her constant questions and chattering whenever she got into the mood. The mare flicked her tail, the feathers making her typical rhythmic sound. Her ears perked as she looked over her shoulder toward him. He made a sound she had never heard before. The mare opened her mouth to ask but quickly shut it realizing that maybe since he didn't answer the first question, he wouldn't want to answer this one.
At his inquiry about food, her stomach rumbled as if to answer. The mare gave a groan. "Food..bane of my existence..." She grunted remembering last week's fiasco with some blueberries she found. Needless to say her body didn't take to them very well. "You must be hungry too. And my needs are fine..." She turned brushing against the stallion in the process more out of habit than anything as she started further up the mountain. "Maybe there's water in the little hole we made." She thought out loud to herself. Usually if it snowed, she would 'eat' that in a sense to get a drink. It was getting colder..maybe she would be lucky... Her nostrils flared as she maneuvered the grounds until coming up to their little stash spot. The mare went to the hole and was lucky enough to find a little water. The mare waited for Ahadzen to join her before she took a few licks, enough to keep her satisfied. She then turned toward the hole they dug for vegetation and kept close to a small bush. She munched on twigs and bark flicking her tail and shaking her head a little. The mare raised her head upright as she ate. As usually, she sneezed, her top feather expectantly coming down to slap at her nose before righting itself. Ahh would she ever get used to that? It still surprised her sometime, especially if she sneezed twice. Ahadzen seemed to get a kick out of it though. But he seemed distracted. She wondered if his voices were back again, and that's why he was such in a foul mood.

Ahadzen nodded as Pheonix's stomach grumbled. It feared him inside, but why? He was hungry too, after all, where his stomach gurgled, agreeing to the mare's comment. He smiled, finding it amusing that their bellies were having a little conservation. Lightening up his mood, he slowly followed after being brushed, following to the pool that was discovered a while ago. Staring at the water, his memory flashed back to his colthood. A drought in the lands caused his kirin herd to travel to the mountains where it eventually became a yearly ritual to travel up. Now he knew why his mother would always be so fond of travelling up hills and cliffs.
Though this was nothing like the drought, he felt like there was a relation to it. Were they to travel somewhere else? But it was sometimes filled with water here? Waiting for her to finish her drink, Ahadzen simply took a couple quick licks and dug the ground a bit more, hoping that making the pool larger would bring in more water. He snorted. He would just have to wait and see. Not even going near their stash of food, he walked away, too soon to laugh at her sneezing at her feathers. No, there was something different in him. He felt like something strong was forming in him about Pheonix. Like if they were meant to be more than just herdmates, but what? Standing his guard, he waited for Pheonix to finish her meal. They would have to talk indeed, but was he ready? Not being was what he feared. "Phee..."

The mare had been quite content feeding and drinking, but she noticed that even with the food to their hungry bellies, he still wasn't his usual self. So he wasn't grumpy because he was hungry... Her thoughts traveled wondering what on earth could he be wondering about in that mind of his?
Her thoughts were interrupted as he called her. Immediately she trotted to his side looking him over. "Are the voices back again?" She asked with concern watching him with her smolder colored eyes. A thought struck her: her and Ahadzen had almost the same colored irises...that was something she never thought to think of in all her years of knowing the stallion. Strange how she never noticed that before. Her tail flicked behind her, the rustling of her feathers commencing yet again. Pheonix felt something brewing within her, that same feeling whenever she felt close to Ahadzen and whenever he was upset - want and worry. Was the only reason she was with him to make sure he was okay...or was it because she wanted to stay? Her mouth quirked a little as she craned her head up so that her nose touched his. Even though Ahadzen didn't seem bigger than most males, Pheonix was a very small mare. And yet it was something that he didn't seem to mind...did it mean that he traveled with her not because of the promise he made to her but because he wanted to stay with her. Pheonix gave a sigh closing her eyes as her nose stayed glued to the stallion's, her frame close. If only she truly knew what was going on inside of him.

"Yes.." he responded, wanting to give a quick reply just to let her know he was still listening. They were back indeed. Ahadzen was sure enough stubborn, but he was willing to accept that his herdmate was always worried for him, like how he was for her, but never showed it. His scales began to twinkle a bit, it was perfect in the glow of the little pool of water that they made. Maybe it was the shining that made him feel like speaking, or maybe it was the fear of letting go. Ahadzen did not want to let go though. This was something that he wanted to hold forever. To protect, to remember.
Being at Phoenix's side for more than he can remember wandering now, he was used to her being close to him. But their noses touched now, and the mare had strained to do that, so he lowed his neck a bit so that there would be no difficulty. Smelling the familiar scent of her muzzle and trying to avoid her feathers, he took it, fearing that what he would say would split the two for good.
"It's time Pheonix." he began. "We have helped each other so much that there is not much more that we can do to complete our promises. I wish that I would have said this to you earlier, but I would like to be more than your herdmate." The words did not come out as he wanted, but his eyes were waiting for hers to open, wanting a response that he wished for. Hopefully good, not one that would torment him in the future.

Pheonix tilted her head wondering why the voices were bothering him again. It had been so long since the last outbreak that...why was it happening now? Her eyes opened a little when he shifted so that her neck wasn't strained to keep their noses touched. She couldn't help but give a little smile as they adjusted so that she could remain close. Ahadzen was always sweet like that to her. When he spoke, she opened her eyes again. Time? Did it mean time for them to split their separate ways and go? By the sound of it, it was. Her heart dropped a little until Ahadzen spoke again. "More than herdmate...?" That didn't sound like he was leaving her. Her brow furrowed as her eyes searched his in an attempt to understand. "I'm...struggling, Ahadda...what is more than herdmate...?" Pheonix was a little confused...and afraid. "Do you mean..friends? I thought we were friends..." The mare felt her feathers rustle out of anxiety as her heart beat hard against her chest. Oh hopefully he would have answers for her.

"We are herdmates and we are friends, Phoenix. But is there a way that we could possibly be destined to have been mates?" He shied saying the last word. Inside, he felt like the answer should have been a yes, but what if she did not understand? He caught her confusion, and his scales felt like they were going to fall off any moment.
"There was always one word that the voices kept saying to me after we left Freezia and Penelope a while back. Remember them?" He did not wait for her to respond. "Before, I would just keep hearing my name get repeated over and over, but once I met you, they seemed to stopped. And now, they're telling me to tell you something that means alot to me."
His scales shone brighter than usual as he said the next few words: "I love you Phoenix, and I always will."

Mates? Pheonix had heard vaguely about such things, but had never given them much thought. The wind gently played with her tail and mane, causing her feathers to rustle, but quietly this time. His voices were back and that immediately worried her. She wanted much to run them off, for them to leave Ahadzen alone. "I...I remember." She whispered quietly coming forward to get closer to him. His scales shone in the moonlight giving him an ethereal glow. Kirins were known for their beauty, and here Pheonix could see why. He was indeed a gorgeous stallion...
And if she heard right, he loved her. Her head tilted as their eyes met. Her brain was trying to register what he was saying, what he was talking about. Love...he loved her? Memories flashed of when they first met in the fields, of their adventures, of their mountain climbs...It all led to this moment as they stood atop the rocks underneath the moon and the stars. This night that suddenly wasn't so cold anymore...would never be cold or lonely again. Before she knew it, her mouth was already forming what her heart was wanting to say. "I...love you, Ahadzen. I will always love you." The mare's eyes gently shone as she buried her face into his neck, taking in his deep scent. She smiled as big as her mouth could allow. Pheonix was happy..."Remember when you said you would teach me life?" Pheonix backed away from him enough to look into his eyes. "You are my life, Ahadzen. And I am forever happy for that...Yes. I will be your mate as long as you will be mine."

For a moment, he shied, worried that she would not comprehend what he was saying. His speech was sometimes unclear after all, but now, he felt like the mare comforted him, allowing himself to release his doubts. What if she did not feel the same way that he did about her? Now that would have been foolish to tell her his feelings then. His ears perked forth, catching a sign that she would speak. Eyes locked into hers, sincere and powerful.
As she revealed her true feelings to him, Ahadzen felt happier than ever. Warmer than before. He would always be there for her, and as she touched his neck, he smiled. Leaving his herd because of rebellion had led him to this mare, and he would never find any other like her. He nodded, taking in her words. He remembered hearing how some stallions would want to steal a mare when she is already mated, and that was what Ahadzen did not want. The kirin vowed to allow Pheonix her freedom, but to also limit her so that she would not wander off too far from his safety.

For the first time in the mare's life, she felt at home. She felt comfortable, and she felt alive. Her heart was beating so fast she felt as if it would pop out of her ears on either side. But she liked the feeling and she loved being next to the stallion. She leaned into him again curling her neck so that her head would rest against his neck. Her tail bristled with happiness and her whole body shivered with the tingly sensation of pleasure. She thought she was dreaming, but it was clear that this was indeed reality, and she had found a way, and a new life with Ahadzen.
She wished with all her hearts that this would never end. Even if her Master attempted to come back to claim her, she would fight to the deaths to keep her mate and herself safe and away. Now that Pheonix had her life, she refused to give it up.
