 It was a quiet morning in the woods, and Pelielle was getting in a lovely first meal of fresh greens, her butterfly wings floating back and forth on her back as she grazed. This was not her first morning in this particular area, though she was still somewhat new to it. And perhaps that was why she did not notice the signs of a stalking feline in the shadow of some nearby bushes. No, her attention was entirely focused on her meal. Unfortunately for the mare, that was exactly the same level of attention the predator was focusing on the kirin... When it finally did leap with claws outstretched, Pelielle was caught completely offguard. Though her scales hardened with the rush of adrenaline to protect her body, it wasn't enough to avoid the ripping of flesh. She screamed with pain and alarm, instinctively kicking as she tried to struggle away. That just seemed to bolden the feline further though, as it moved to bite and drag her downwards, the easier to do her real damage...

 There was another mare in the woods that morning, one who was far less 'unaware' of the nearby feline. For a brief period she had considered hunting it down herself, but in the end she'd decided she wasn't quite in the mood to bother trying to take down such dangerous prey at the moment. No, best not to risk it when she wasn't really all that hungry to begin with.
Her previously made decision flew out into the wind, however, the moment she heard the other mare's scream. Damn it. It had found another of her own kind. Not able to bring herself to leave the other to die when she was so close by, the mare charged toward the scene at full speed. She didn't slow any once she'd made it into the clearing, instead lowering her head and ramming the attacking feline straight in the side. The feline let out a yelp of pain as her horn pierced it, and when it turned around to try to claw it her it was instead met with talons to the face. It gave up the fight right then, pulling away and blinding fleeing back into the bush; it wasn't likely to live for very long with such a deep puncture wound though. "You alright there?" Keela asked, turning to look over the mare who had been being attacked. She looked a pretty fair mess at the moment, but blood always had a way of making things look worse than they necessarily were.

Pelielle stumbled forward at the additional impact, and was far more concerned about limping away from the situation a little than trying to ascertain what exactly was going on around here. Her wounds hurt, and it had all happened so fast... "Shaken" was an understatement. And when she dared peer back at her rescuer, she found the sight no more comforting. A long twisted ebony horn dripping red, with a fearsome beak and strange claws where her front hooves should be...
The mare whimpered, avoiding the gaze of the other kirin-ish being and stared instead at the mess that was her own body. It was hard not to shiver in fear, with so much red... She'd never seen that much before all in one place, not ever... "N-no," she answered finally in a small voice, eyeing the other hesitantly. The cat was gone, but...did this new face have better intentions? She couldn't say herself, not after the scare she'd just experienced.

Keela had to snort at the other's eventual answer. Dramatic, but at least she was honest. The raven mare leaned in closer to get a better look at the wounds that had been inflicted upon the other mare in the attack. "You could be worse," was her eventual reply. She herself had certainly seen worse days in her youth. Still, it would be best to get those wounds cleaned out before she got an infection. "There's a stream nearby. You should probably stop there to rinse off." Unless she wanted to walk around reeking of blood and attracting more predators to herself that was.

Pelielle flinched away from the inspection - the sight of that beak closer to her own bloodied back was one that was fairly traumatizing. All the other had to do was quickly snap and things would be even worse...
But she was trying to help Pelielle? Advice was helping. Running off something that had tried to hurt her was also helping. The butterfly-winged mare was very, very confused. "...what if they start bleeding again later?" she asked, anxious. She wasn't certain they'd stopped yet as of now, actually.

The raven mare wasn't remotely fazed by the other's fear of her; it wasn't exactly anything new. There was a reason she had spent most of her life wandering on her own. To the other's inquiry she merely shrugged. "Just be careful not to roll around in any mud or anything till you heal up. Bathe a little extra and pay attention to your surroundings and you should be fine." Fairly basic stuff in her book.

Pay attention to her surroundings for what? She'd never seen one of those...those things before today! And they had come out of nowhere! Pelielle's wings fluttered anxiously at the thought of being on her guard at all times. How would she ever feel safe to sleep? What if she was trying to bathe extra and was attacked then? There were too many awful things that could happen... "What...what if there were more where that beast came from?" For all she knew, they might be lurking in bushes now, and the moment the other left her, they'd finish what the first had started...

"..." The raven mare couldn't help but deadpan at that question. "You've never run into a predator before?" Seriously, how old was this mare? Likely not very old if she'd assumed the world was only full of grass and butterflies and rainbows.

"N-not ever," Pelielle confirmed, shuddering slightly. And she hoped she wouldn't again, but if there were lots of them and she didn't know what to look for...

Keela simply sighed and rolled her eyes. "Yes, there are more. Which is why I said to pay attention to your surroundings. There are plenty of things in this world that would like to eat us." Though why any of the predators of this world bothered to try to attack them versus the much smaller and probably easier to take down Kilen natives of this planet was beyond her. Perhaps their eyes were too big for their stomachs.

The mere concept was terrifying, and Pelielle's wings drooped as she curled in on herself. There was more than the kind of thing that had attacked? Why had she never seen them until now? And more importantly, couldn't they all just go away again so she could live a peaceful life? "...I don't understand why though," she said timidly. "I never did anything to them..."

... Really? That was the logic she was going to go by? "Yeah, well, grass never 'did anything' to you either, yet you eat it all the time. It's called being hungry." And as it so happened, most predators saw them as a good source of food. Such was life.

"That's different," Pelielle insisted, though she didn't think she could explain why she thought so if pressed. "And there's a lot more grass than there are kirin!" Since she hadn't met all that many of her own kind, and she was still a little skeptical if the other mare - at least, she sounded female, but that wasn't necessarily a guarantee - was even technically Pelielle's 'own kind', with the beak and the feathers and all. "There's more than enough for everyone to eat grass, I'd think!" Maybe she should stop insisting so loudly. Her head was feeling a little woozy.

"I don't think they can eat grass," Keela pointed out. "They're different animals from us." Not to mention the fact that meat tasted way better anyway, so she couldn't entirely blame the predators for trying to grab it wherever they could. Still, it'd be much more helpful if they all just ate fish and squirrels or something.

"Us." So this one was a kirin too? Was there so much variation? Pelielle couldn't imagine what other kirin might look like - even stranger mouths and feet, perhaps? "It doesn't seem very kind to make animals that are forced to hurt one another," the mare mumbled, swaying ever so slightly on her feet. Perhaps she'd best look for that stream that had been mentioned earlier...
