The remnants of a noon-time meal—fruit and finger sandwiches and sugary pastries—littered the small dining table in Sailor Ganymede’s private sitting room, which stood by a set of windows overlooking a picturesque garden. Roses bloomed large and full underneath a clear sky, overseen as it always ways by the stormy, expansive face of Jupiter. Only weeks ago the Ganymedean weather had mirrored Jupiter’s turbulent climate, but as the spring progressed into summer the clouds diminished and the breeze grew gentle and calm. Now the days were temperate and mild—warm, lazy days that off-world visitors craved, but which the Ganymedean people themselves often took for granted.

Across the room, opposite the dining area and past the lavish couches and plush, comfortable chairs arranged in groups for quiet conversation, sat a grand piano, and in front of this, on a small bench of polished wood and opulent upholstery, sat Sailor Ganymede himself. Liesel’s long, elegant fingers moved over the ivory keys, filling the room with a steady stream of smooth, tranquil music.

A second figure accompanied him, though Liesel didn’t allow the other presence to disturb him. On the contrary, having his companion nearby was strangely calming. It wasn’t often that they were able to see one another outside of the sphere of politics. A year into their friendship and Liesel felt as if they never had enough time to truly encourage its growth. There were always other people around, always other responsibilities to concern themselves with. Each had a duty more important to them than each other. The thought made Liesel feel quite lonely.

And so he appreciated Serge’s arrival three days early. There would be meetings to attend, of course, and soon, but his friend had somehow managed to arrange a premature visit under the pretense of “taking some time off.” The days leading up to a meeting with the Martian ambassadors had been spent seeing to their own entertainment—riding and games and trips into town, and private luncheons and dinners with conversation that had less to do with politics and more to do with each other.

At seventeen, Liesel had very few friends. He had allies and brothers-in-arms, but few people who knew him well, and even less who knew him by his given name. Being in Serge’s presence was therefore something of a satisfying experience. They’d met only a year ago, yet Liesel found there wasn’t anyone he trusted more.

He liked how the moon of Ganymede was a lot more temperate than Jupiter, especially when it came to weather. Jupiter was harsh and unforgiving, so the days on this world was very relaxing for the young page. It would never stop reminding him of home.

The food wasn't bad, either. It was light and sweet, and while Liesel played on his piano, Serge sat on a nearby couch, poking through what was left of their meal and taking a few nibbles here and there as he listened. Everything he'd experienced seemed to be similar to what he was used to, but still vastly different. Even the sound of the piano wasn't the same, or the style of music, but it was enjoyable regardless.

He wasn't in his typical uniform of fur and leather. Instead he had donned something out of the closet of the room he was staying in. He could only assume the clothes had been left for him since they all fit, so he didn't feel guilty about trying them on. After wearing tunics and fur lined capes for the past year on a daily basis, Serge had taken to enjoying trying on the clothes of other worlds. It wasn't any different now, and he happened to think he looked rather dashing in the lightweight fabrics and ruffles and frills that weren't typically associated with Jupiter clothing. His hair was pulled back, all the same, a little past his shoulders. While he liked trying new clothing, he wasn't too sure how he'd like to have his hair fixed up. He didn't want to look less of a knight of Jupiter than he already did.

"How long have you been playing?" he asked, standing from his seat to approach Liesel as he came to the conclusion of one song. Surely he must have had lessons for a good part of his life to play so well. Serge certainly didn't know any musical instruments. There wasn't much time for him to learn one, anyway.

Requesting some time off was certainly one of his better ideas, although he was surprised that he'd been allowed to stay in Sailor Ganymede's presence without someone to supervise them.

Liesel glanced at Serge with a smile. “Since I was little,” he said. “It’s one of the few things I liked at home that I was able to continue when they brought me to the castle. Probably because it’s considered a refined hobby.” His voice slipped into a mocking tone at the last two words, and he feigned an imperious expression before dropping the look and laughing softly. “A proper gentleman knows at least one instrument, or so my governess likes to tell me.”

He was inclined to believe it was more of an ideal than actual fact. Some people simply didn’t have the talent or the inclination, and no amount of practice—forced or otherwise—could change that.

He ran his fingers up and down the keys in a quick scale, and then dropped his hands into his lap, where they rested lightly. “They were probably all rather relieved that I knew something worth note before coming here. My parents weren’t very strict in the way they raised me, my mother especially, so my governess used to think I was a bit of a hopeless case. Naturally, I was pleased to prove her wrong.”

Smiling again, Liesel angled himself on the bench to be able to look up at his friend. He, too, was quite surprised that no one had yet thought it necessary to oversee their private exchanges, the Lord Chancellor especially. After their first encounter and the spectacle they’d made at the courtyard fountain—which had been followed by quite the vicious lecture in propriety, and chaperoned meetings from then on—Liesel would have thought the Lord Chancellor would be determined to keep them both well within his sights during the entirety of Serge’s stay. He could only assume everyone else was too busy with preparations for the visiting Martians to be overly concerned about him and Serge.

Whatever the case, Liesel was thankful for the time alone. It gave him the opportunity to feel normal and free for once, instead of straining under the constant pressure to exude perfection.

“If you’re bored, we can find something else to do,” he suggested. Serge didn’t look too terribly put out, but Liesel still wanted to make sure his friend was appropriately entertained.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 09, 2012 11:38 am

"I'm not bored," he promised, taking the final steps towards the piano, before turning so his back was facing it and nudging Liesel over so he would be allowed to sit on the bench with him. "I think it's nice. The only thing I've continued to do since I was little is riding and hunting. Everything else..." Well, he certainly hadn't been prepared for matters of intergalactic negotiations until more recently. It was something he was still getting used to, but not something the thought he was especially good at. Yet.

Thankfully, the fortress of Valhalla had a bit of history and reputation to hold a decent amount of importance until he was completely trained and used to everything. At least it was fairly well known in the immediate area of the solar system.

"Then again, my people aren't really into artistic things... not musically, anyway. They'd rather paint things like maps and charts and make tiny devices to be able to let someone find their way across space," he said with a mock grin, although it wasn't as though he hadn't enjoyed these little hobbies. He was actually kind of good at putting together little trinkets.

"Play something else," he requested, shifting slightly so he could reach around and poke at a few of the keys, although careful not to knock the other young man off the bench he'd joined. Naturally it didn't make as nice of a sound when he did it than when Liesel did.

Scooting over to allow Serge enough room, Liesel raised his hands to place them gently over the keys again. “You don’t need to press so hard,” he advised him as Serge poked at the keys. “You’re rather heavy handed, aren’t you? Music isn’t like war, you know. It doesn’t require so much force.”

He started up another piece. Nothing fast-paced, but slow and easy. It was part a demonstration and part simply fulfilling Serge’s request. He didn’t know what sorts of things his friend would prefer to hear and so he settled on something he thought would fit with the calm atmosphere between them.

“So they’re your people now?” he wondered, concentrating on what he was doing but not finding it especially difficult to hold a conversation at the same time. “You didn’t seem quite so fond of them last year. I suppose they’ve grown on you then? Enough for you to claim them as your own?”

He thought it must have been difficult for Serge to leave his home on Earth and travel all the way to Jupiter to take up residence there. It had been hard enough for Liesel to leave his childhood home and his family behind to come to the capital, and that was all on the same world. Being even further away, and among people whose way of life may be completely different than what Serge had always known on Earth, must be even worse. Liesel could barely even imagine it without feeling as if his heart were giving a painful squeeze of longing in his chest.

It seemed so lonely…

“That’s good,” he decided. “That you can adapt and find a place among them. I don’t think I could have done it. In certain ways I suppose you and I are quite similar, though I think I have it easier, seeing as these have always been my people. It wasn’t difficult for me develop a fondness or a loyalty to them. I always had it. But you’ve been able to make Jupiter your home, whether or not you liked it much in the beginning. It shows strength of character.”

Serge allowed his eyes to close lightly as Liesel started up another tune, although he did laugh when told not to be so rough. "Sorry... Maybe I should get a lesson from you some day...?" he teasingly suggested, not minding either way, but if he was going to be fussed at, then he'd see how far Liesel would go to 'fix' things.

"I suppose," he responded, frowning lightly now that he'd inadvertently brought up his loyalties and growing familiarity with the people who resided in and around Valhalla. He didn't relate to them very well since he still wasn't used to their customs and traditions, but as a knight of Jupiter, and as guardian of Valhalla... he felt as though it was not only his duty to be loyal to them, but an honor to be depended on to protect and represent them.

There must be a reason he was chosen to go to Jupiter instead of staying on Earth, so he would just have to accept his fate and continue to grow.

"I'm nothing like them. I don't think I am, anyway... They're all so... loud and excitable. They like to go out in the rain during storms and just... watch the skies. And everyone helps each other out during the harvest season. It's like everyone is related and just... one big family. Did you know we sleep in the same room? Like... a big room together. The soldiers of the fortress at least... I mean, I have my own room too, but I can chose either." Because sometimes he still needed to get away from the noise and excitement and just rejuvenate.

"I like it here... It's calm... It reminds me of Earth," he shared, although he couldn't remember if he'd said something along those lines before.

“I’ve heard that they share,” Liesel observed, his fingers still gracefully moving over the keys as they spoke to one another. “But I’ve never witnessed it myself. The few times I’ve been to Jupiter in the last year, I’ve always had my own room. I assume they allow their guests some comforts. I don’t know what I’d choose if I had the option. I imagine it can be quite… loud,” he settled on the word somewhat hesitantly, not sure if the picture he was imagining in his head was as accurate as he thought it might be, “what with all the snoring.”

Somehow he thought people from Jupiter must snore an awful lot. Many of the men he’d met, especially the soldiers, seemed somewhat… burly. Some of them looked rather like bears—friendly but grizzled. He was used to people of a more dainty and delicate build. Trying to imagine the castle residence packed into a single room with little means of privacy was somewhat of an amusing thought.

Really, a fair bit of money and prestige made the wealthiest and most influential of his people such fussy creatures.

“Not that I’ve always had my own room,” he continued. “My brothers were both much older than I am, and the eldest was married when I was very young, so I never shared a room with them, but the youngest of my sisters and I had a habit of piling into one bed on stormy nights. Here, of course, I’m on my own. So few people were ever allowed in here when I first arrived. Now I can invite my own guests if I please, provided their company is pertinent, and, of course, it would be terribly inappropriate if they were to sleep in here. I don’t think I’d mind the company too much otherwise, but things being as they are… the Lord Chancellor’s head would likely explode, and I can only imagine how horrible and shameful the gossip would be.”

He glanced to Serge again to flash him an amused smile. “It’s not always so calm here. We like to put on a very good show, but underneath it all… well…”

Liesel wasn’t sure how to finish, and so he simply let the sentence hang there.
PostPosted: Wed Dec 12, 2012 1:54 pm

Serge made a face, glancing over to Liesel at the mention of the snoring. "As if you don't snore," he teased, although he obviously didn't know if Liesel snored or not. He was just poking fun at him.

He shifted on the bench so he could glance over his shoulder some more and at the keys Liesel was moving his fingers along.

"So you're the youngest in your family...? I'm the oldest..." Not that he'd seen his family in a year... and he didn't know when he would ever see his family again. Usually he tried not talking about them, but with Liesel, he couldn't help but open up to him.

Or maybe he was just desperate for some kind of companionship. He didn't exactly relate very well with other kids his age. Not ones from Jupiter, anyway. And those he spent most of his time with were much older than he was. His 'guardians' weren't exactly there to be his close friends, anyway.

"The Lord Chancellor should focus more on his own duties than making sure to keep you locked up and away from the rest of the world," Serge frowned, although that might be because if Liesel wasn't allowed to have another person sleep in his room, well... he'd have a very boring, lonely life. But he really wasn't concerned about that at the moment. It was just a passing thought. "I'm surprised he's not here right now. He doesn't like me, does he?"

Liesel was prepared to tell Serge all about his parents and his brothers and sisters and the baby nephew he barely remembered—and who probably knew absolutely nothing about him, now that he thought about it, as if he’d never even existed as part of the family—but the bittersweet conversation was halted at Serge’s contemptuous remark about the Lord Chancellor, and he suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable on the bench and unable to look Serge in the eye. He focused very hard on the keys instead, but this tactic helped him not at all, and he accidentally pressed the wrong one.

He continued with the song regardless and hoped Serge didn’t notice the momentary slip.

“Seeing as the Lord Chancellor practically runs the place, it is his duty to see to all aspects of the kingdom at the king’s command, and seeing as I, as Sailor Ganymede, am an important part of that…”

He trailed off again. He didn’t know how deep into that discussion he felt like going, and so he hardly even bothered to begin. It already seemed to be a touchy subject, and if there was one thing he knew well, it was not to broach touchy subjects—especially in matters of diplomacy, unless it was absolutely necessary, but then of course it must be done in the most tactful way possible.

“I wouldn’t say he doesn’t like you,” he tried to explain. He would much rather discuss the Lord Chancellor’s feelings in regards to Serge than he would the Lord Chancellor’s iron grip on him. “I’m fairly certain he was somewhat insulted when it appeared as if you were attempting to drown me in the fountain, and though I have assured him countless times that that was not the case, he will always believe what he wants to believe. Regardless, there is little he can do about it, as you are a knight of Jupiter, and if there is one weakness my people have, aside from our pride and vanity, it is our incessant need to curry favor with House Jupiter. Thus, you are practically untouchable and therefore you intimidate him, which further insults him, as he is quite self-important and likes to think of himself in rather a high manner, immune to intimidation.”

Liesel paused a moment to clear his throat, still intently focused on his own hands. “Of course, all that certainly makes it seem as if he dislikes you. Suffice it to say, you inspire much conflict within him, which, as a man who enjoys all manner of control, causes him great offense.”
PostPosted: Wed Dec 12, 2012 3:58 pm

Liesel had such a sweet sounding voice, Serge decided as he listened to him ramble about the old man Lord Chancellor and his superiority complex. He was amused that this guy was apparently threatened by someone a third of his age. All the more reason for Serge to not feel threatened by this guy.

But Liesel's words, his choice of speech... it was soft and airy and not simple and informal like how many of those who resided in Valhalla spoke. It was beautiful, really. Lyrical...

And in the short time he'd gotten to know the young man, even though they'd technically known each other for over a year, Serge couldn't help but become more and more intrigued by him.

So it really didn't surprise him to find himself leaning closer to Liesel as he spoke, staring so carefully at his hands so as not to mess up in the song he was playing. A hand lifted to gently take hold of Liesel's chin, turning his face just enough for Serge to be able to press their lips together.

How long he'd been wanting to kiss him, he wasn't sure, but he knew he definitely wanted to spend more time with the first person to give him a real chance to just... be himself.

Of course, he could also happily continue on the topic of how he didn't really like the Lord Chancellor either, and how Liesel needed to take charge and do what he needed to do as the senshi of Ganymede, but only if the change in topic was unwanted. He was rather satisfied with things as they were at the moment, honestly.

If Liesel had realized Serge was thinking such things, he probably would have been quite embarrassed, not only because he wasn’t accustomed to such behavior being directed toward him, but also because he wouldn’t know what he’d done to deserve it.

He was focused on the song, as it were—or trying to be—but halted when his chin was grabbed and his face turned toward his friend.

Suddenly the room was very quiet. If Liesel listened carefully enough, he might have heard the song birds chirping out in the garden, but as his attention had zeroed in on Serge and what Serge had just done, everything else faded into the background.

Liesel was quick to pull away—not harshly, but he certainly didn’t want to give Serge the impression that he could be so forward. He knew his eyes were wide. He suspected he appeared both startled and even somewhat afraid, but he tried with all of his might to keep his expression neutral despite that.

Of course, that proved to be a pointless effort when he realized his face was no longer pale, but completely suffused with color.

“That…” he began, suddenly stumbling over his speech. “That was inappropriate.”

He tried to face the piano again, his eyes determinedly fastened on the keys his hands had not left, though they failed to move. He swallowed heavily and told himself there was no need for him to feel uncomfortable. They hadn’t done anything bad. Serge had merely gotten carried away—why?—and made a mistake. It wasn’t either of their faults. Serge didn’t know and Liesel hadn’t seen fit to tell him. The topic didn’t generally come up in everyday conversation.

“I’m sorry,” he tried to speak more levelly. “I understand in some cultures friends have been known to kiss one another, but… that isn’t our way.”

He knew as soon as he said it that Serge would know he was lying. His people put great stock in tradition, formality and propriety, and they often attempted to put on a show of it, but even Liesel, as sheltered as he was, was aware of more indiscretions and affairs than he could keep track of. Living at court made avoiding such things impossible, though others certainly tried to conceal it all from him.

“What I mean is… you shouldn’t… with me, because… it’s… it’s simply too inappropriate!”
PostPosted: Sun Jan 20, 2013 10:35 am

Serge pulled back as well when it was obvious that his actions were unwanted, although he didn't think there was anything so horrible about a little kiss. It wasn't as if he was forcing Liesel against his will. Well, he'd kissed him in surprise, so he supposed that was a bit against his will, but that wasn't really the point.

"How was that inappropriate?" he frowned, having the growing feeling that it was more about how others felt than how Liesel felt. He'd been brainwashed into believing that he was supposed to be some kind of pure, innocent, untouchable idol for the people of Ganymede to ohh and ahh over. It was sickening, hearing about the things that Liesel wasn't allowed to do, the things that any normal person could do, but because of his status as Sailor Ganymede, he was locked into a life of being carefully supervised and protected as though he'd break if handled too harshly.

He didn't comment on the fact that Liesel was lying to him about Ganymede's culture, but his eyebrows raised as if to offer another chance for his friend to correct his wording and to come up with a better excuse. He'd seen plenty of public displays of affection while on Ganymede, and while he didn't doubt that Liesel was being sheltered from what the rest of the world did, he was pretty sure there wasn't such a strict, unspoken rule about not being allowed to innocently kiss in private. It wasn't as though he were grabbing the senshi and ravishing him in public.

"If you don't want me to do it, then just say that. Don't use excuses to push me away, Liesel," he growled lightly under his breath, obviously not buying what was being fed to him. If Liesel didn't want to be kissed, then he could just say so...

Liesel flushed even darker at Serge’s response, clamping his mouth shut for fear of saying something wrong.

It wasn’t so much that his people wanted to keep him ‘pure’ for the sake of anything it symbolized, though they certainly liked to pretend as if that were the case—his governess had often extolled the virtues of purity, but Liesel had always thought her to be strangely stern and frigid to begin with, at least compared to some of the other people he’d seen flouncing around court, or the maids who could never seem to keep their mouths shut when it came to juicy court gossip. Their hangup on his ‘purity,’ or whatever anyone else decided to refer to it as, truly had less to do with symbolism and everything to do with his government's pursuit of power and control.

They couldn’t control who the soul of Sailor Ganymede was born into, but they could control Sailor Ganymede once he awakened.

Liesel acknowledged this. He knew exactly what they were doing when they made the rules and laws, and why they did it, yet he never saw any reason to go against it. It was the way things had been for so long already. It wasn’t anything personal; it was simply the way things were.

“Why would I want to do that?” he quietly asked, realizing a bit too late how the question could come off as insulting.

A kiss wasn’t horrible. He hadn’t felt disgusted when Serge had done it, but it opened up too many doorways that were better left firmly closed.

“I… what I meant is…” he stuttered again, glancing over at Serge with a look of apology on his face, even if it meant his friend would also be able to see his embarrassment and his shame. “I wasn’t… I wasn’t making excuses. It is inappropriate. Because of… because of who I am. We… haven’t talked about it, but surely you know.”
PostPosted: Sun Jan 20, 2013 10:58 am

"I don't know!" he snapped, jumping up from the bench since Liesel apparently couldn't think of any reason for him to want to kiss him. Which was fine! There were plenty of people who actually wanted to kiss him. There were countless others, and he could be with whoever the hell he wanted. He was Valhalla! A knight of Jupiter! Who wouldn't want to be with him? He was handsome and had a fortress and whatever anyone could ever want, so sure, why would he care that Liesel of all people wouldn't want to kiss him??

Serge took to pacing the room. There wasn't really anywhere he wanted to go and he couldn't just stay still. Being still for too long made him feel very uncomfortable. At first he moved over to the bed, but decided that just made him angry for no reason whatsoever. Then he headed over to the balcony doors, taking a few moments to wander outside, before coming back in. The dresser was his next stop, and he fiddled with the various perfumes and objects on display.

"I’m rather fond of you, alright? I thought you might return the sentiment," he pointed out, picking up a book and flipping through it. Of course... he didn't just kiss people he liked... but Liesel was different... Liesel was actually his friend and he cared for him more than just those he was ultimately responsible for.

"I don't care that it's because who you are... Why should that matter??"

Not expecting such a reaction, Liesel was quite surprised by Serge’s sudden burst of temper, and sat very still in his place on the bench, dropping his hands from the piano keys into his lap again. His eyes widened in response and he felt a bit of the warm color recede from his face, replaced instead with the sort of sick paleness that lent itself to discomfort. He didn’t have anything against shouting—it was hard to avoid it in their line of work, as certain diplomatic endeavors had the habit of bringing out the worst in people—but he couldn’t say he liked it very much coming from his dearest friend.

And it made him feel terribly guilty knowing that it was his fault.

Liesel turned his head to watch Serge stalk around the room, but other than that he moved only a little. He fidgeted in place, shifting on the bench in the hopes of finding a more comfortable position while wringing his hands in his lap. He told himself he should be able to handle this. He told himself it was like any other disagreement between foreign dignitaries, only he knew that wasn’t true because Serge wasn’t any other foreign dignitary. Their friendship, as much as he enjoyed it, made things quite a bit more complicated in that respect. He was much more cautious in their dispute, which he didn’t think would be so easily settled when it had left the realm of politics and traversed into something more personal.

“It matters because…” he tried to reply, unsure how he wanted to explain himself, “… because I’m not allowed to… to have those sorts of relationships with people. If anyone else had seen that, it would have caused a horrible uproar. And I know you don’t care,” he added quickly. “I know you don’t understand why I… why I go along with it, and perhaps you think I shouldn’t, but it is my choice and… and please don’t be angry, Serge. I’m only doing what’s expected of me. It’s the law. Surely you can try to understand why I… why I can’t…”

He wasn’t sure Serge did, or if he even wanted to. Liesel shifted again, suspecting his friend viewed the entire thing as something trivial, and maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t so important in the grand scheme of things, maybe compared to the rest of their duties these restrictions were the last thing Liesel needed to be worrying about, but he’d made a commitment to his people and his people’s ways, and he intended to follow through with that the best he could.

“Of course I’m fond of you,” he continued. “I’ve always… ever since we met… I’ve wanted to be friends. I thought… I thought that’s what we were. I thought that’s why you went through the trouble of arriving early. I… I haven’t had friends since I was brought here, and even before that I spent most of my time around my siblings and… and if I’ve done something wrong then… I apologize…”

Liesel frowned at himself and lowered his head, still wringing his hands on his lap. He felt so awkward. Whatever confidence he’d managed to gain in the year he’d spent officially as Sailor Ganymede wasn’t serving him well at all in such a tense personal conversation.

“We are friends, aren’t we?”
