So on this day she was out on a camping trip. The camping grounds were safe, there were many other families near, and the best part of all... it had a lake for swimming and sailing. Having no way to bring her little boat over, she had opted to rent a canoe from the park itself.

After setting up her tent and unpacking her supplies, she was out inspecting her canoe.

Click to show. “You shouldn’t go out on the water.” A morose voice warned from the sidelines as Knots checked her canoe over. “You might die.” Cirrus was keeping well back from the water’s edge, but he’d clearly felt it necessary to venture close enough to at least warn unsuspecting youngsters about the dangers lurking beneath the surface. The pale Phony stared at Knots with big solemn eyes.

"That's what life jackets are for," Knots said, pulling one out from her pack and showing him. "See?"

She got a good look at him. "Wow!"

“That won’t save you from her. It’s not the water you need to be worried about.” His gaze dropped to the ground.“You shouldn’t stare… it’s rude.” That was something he was going to have to get used to.

"It's not rude if I'm making an observation," Knots arched a brow, looking at him. "How am I supposed to get to know you if I can't get a good look at you? What if I happen to like the way you look, hmm?"

It took a moment for what Cirrus had said to sink in. As she pulled on her life jacket she blinked.

"Her who?"

He opened his mouth a few times and then shut it again. Well, she did have a point about having to look at him, especially since it gave his warning a real punch to it, wait- did she juts sat she might like the way he looked? Impossible!

Deciding to ignore the possibility of something thinking he looked good in his dead state, he launched into the special warning speech he had prepared earlier.

“Beware the lady of the lake, she who waits below the surface for all unsuspecting foals. Only the lucky escape her grasp but not without a price. All others drown in her embrace. You have been warned and let your demise now be on your head.”

He ended his speech with a soft and hopefully haunting ‘ooowoooo’.

"Are you sure she's in this lake? I've never heard of her before in this lake," Knots said. "I've visited this lake over and over with my family and we never heard the rangers say anything about a lady."

Knots looked at all the other camping visitors, fishing, swimming, and some out on jet skis.

"She's got her choice," Knots laughed, then looked at him. "I thought the lady of the lake gave swords out and made people kings."

That hadn’t gone quite as planned; in fact, she didn’t look frightened in the slightest. “W-well, I think she can move around. I’m sure she could be in any lake she wanted to be. That’s how evil works.”

Cirrus sighed. “That’s a different lake lady.” He watched her for a moment, looking miserable. “Well, I can’t stop you… so, good luck.”

"You wanna canoe with me? No better way of facing your fear than by giving it the middle..." she looked at her hooves. "The stink eye," she settled with. "I'll protect you, I hear one thing magical creatures can't stand is good, solid iron and I've go me a dandy of a frying pan in my tent."

Knots retrieved the foal sized skillet, a skillet intended for frying eggs, and handed it towards Cirrus.

"Here! You hit anything we don't recognize and I'll steer the canoe!"

Cirrus accepted the skillet with wide eyes. Did he want to go on the canoe? No, not at all. He was terrified. Not to mention he didn’t even have the support of Mr. Snuggles. Cirrus was regretting leaving the stuffed toy behind.

An important decision needed to be made. Did he want to be afraid for the rest of his unlife? Not to mention, he was already dead. There was hardly anything more that could be done to him. He couldn’t be killed again, could he?

He did a funny little turn on the spot, inspecting their surroundings for potential signs of doom. There was nothing. To be honest, there hadn’t been any earlier either. As far as his tea leaves, the clouds and everything else was concerned, today was as safe as it could get.

He was the only one full of worry and doubt.

“… okay.”

"Good," Knots nodded, then put on her life jacket. "I've got a spare jacket, too, so you won't sink even if anything does try to pull you down. Which I doubt."

Knots pulled the jacket over Cirrus' head without even asking first. "Boy, you sure could use some sun, look how pale you are! Wait... does it even work that way on us?"

Knots was attempting to fill in the vacuous void that seemed to fill the moment, though it couldn't have been more than two minutes.

"You've got wings, too," she added. "If you panic, you could always just fly up. I can use my magic to make air bubbles if you think you're drowning."

Cirrus allowed Knots to do as she liked, moving his head and shrugging his shoulders to make it easier for the life jacket to slip on. He didn’t mention, though the thought did occur to him with some alarm, that with the life jacket covering his wings, they weren’t going to be much use in an escape.

He was grateful for her constant chatter; it distracted him, in part, from being lost in images of being pulled down into the deep darkness of the lake with all the breath had been pushed from his lungs.

If it was even possible, Cirrus seemed to go even paler.

With legs that felt like they were made of stone, he tottered forward towards the canoe.

"C'mon, you go in first and hold on," Knots said. "I'll hold it steady and then push us in."

She positioned the canoe and threw in the oars. Knots stood there and watched his movements go wooden, as though an unseen puppeteer had stopped commandeering his strings.

"Are you alright? If you're that scared, you can stay here, you know. But you'll have to throw the skillet if you spy anything coming at me," she laughed.

“I-I can do this…” Cirrus climbed into the canoe, adjusted the life jacket and then huddled miserably as he waited for Knots to start pushing. He was holding onto the skillet for dear life, as if it was the only thing protecting from his potential ‘second-death’.

He looked back at her out of big, terrified eyes. “I won’t let you face her alone.” She was too nice for drowning.

"If you're certain," Knots said with a nod, then started pushing the canoe in.

With a few kicks off, she clambered in and took hold of an oar. It took some effort to get it going, but once it was in the stream she let the water do most of the work. She gave a deep sigh of satisfaction and watched other people sail on by and others swimming near the sides.

"It's a lovely day," she noted.
