Frigid winter air stung the nostrils and lungs of the unicorn, causing every breath to be short and labored. She had been out and by herself for some days now, eating dead frozen grass and any winter berries she could find. Home was days behind her, but in which direction, she didn’t know. Guinevere had never been separated from her father and the others at the teepee for this long before, and it worried her. She felt like she was traveling in circles, and though she knew her father would look for her, she worried she would never find home again. The mare longed for the warmth of the teepee, for the soft bristles of the two-legger’s brush along her back, the seemingly endless supply of delicious food. And most of all, she longed for Daddy’s company. He always knew what to do, and if he were here now, he’d keep her calm and reassure her. A bit of panic struck the mare’s heart when she thought she may never see home again. Shivering and alone, she picked up her pace, fully aware of how easy a target she would be to anyone out to hurt her.

When winter came, it was always a bit hard on the herd. Some horses dealt better with the cold then others, Lutra was lucky enough. He had been raised since popping from his basic in the Herd and that allowed him to build his endurance. But it also meant now that he was the leader that he would take extra shifts from some of the other Lantern carriers because they just couldn't handle the longer journeys. And this is why he was out now.

The snow crunched under his hooves the warmth from the lantern was nice, regardless. The sun offered little, the stallions green eyes peered up for a moment. He would normally take the right in the fork that was coming up however something told him to take the left. He didn't want to be away from Akari and the kids to long, but he knew his duty. When a horse became one with the paths like he had, they could feel in their bones which way to go. There was someone down in the direction the left path would lead.

With the creaking of the lantern in his mouth Lutra kept his ears alert. But it wasn't hard to hear the quick hoof sounds of a horse.

Guinevere Adelaide was like any other horse. Her senses were heightened and her rational dulled when scared. The smell of another drawing nearer, accompanied with the sounds of crunching snow only sent her into a panic. She quickened her pace to a gallop down the path, looking behind her every so often to see what may be after her. After a few moments, she took for the trees. Hoping she wouldn't be noticed, the unicorn hid behind an evergreen. "Just go away, just go away, just go away," she pleaded under her breath. Her ears swiveled to find sounds, but her heart was racing so fast it was all she could hear. Her breaths were stunted and weak. She thought she may die that day.

Lutra could tell the different between a horse in a rush, and a panicked horse. And this was definitely panicked. The horse was either lost or weak. He slowed his steps when the rushed crunching stopped. But it didn't long for him to find the hoof prints in the snow. He looked around and then followed them to the tree line. Lutra turned to face the trees and spoke around the lantern,

"I'm not here to hurt you. I'm from the Fiamma Eterna, I'm here to guide you to your destination." His voice wasn't harsh not not overly soft and caring either. It was confident. His green eyes lit up like his green flame as he waited for the response.

Guin could feel her heart sink and tears well up in her eyes. She had been found. Amitola had always tought the mare to never trust anyone, no matter how helpful or kind they seemed to be. But what was the point now? He had found her, and could she couldn't hide now. He'd just find her again. Shaking, her hooves led her away from the tree she was behind. "H-h-h-hello..." The tears made their way from her eyes onto her cheeks. They stung in the freezing air and blinking began to hurt. She could no longer feel her nose or her mouth. She examined the lantern momentarily. Its odd green glow raised some questions, but she was more curious as to whether it was warm. "M-my name is Guinevere Adelaide..."

Lutra wasn't phased by the mares tears. It was a common reaction, be it fear or happiness. Though the shaking in her voice and trembling of her body showed fear. The Fiamma Eterna wasn't so well known anymore, so the name meant nothing to her. She gave her a small smile, trying to reassure her. "Come Miss Guinevere, there's some warmth to be had. Let me take you where you desire." He said kindly to her. "That's why I'm here. To bring you where you need to go." It wasn't exactly a tiring process, always explaining what and who he was. But everyone reacted to things differently, and all he could do was try and convince her that he was there to help her. Which he was.

She sniffed a little bit as the stallion spoke. What choice did she have? Either she could believe him and have a chance of getting home or she could be stuck out there, lost forever. "I want to go h-h-home." Guin sniffed a little bit more. "I live in a teepee that's in the forest by a lake... But I don't know which way it is..." Her voice became a little more sure and her demeanor a little less skittish. "There must be so many lakes around here... I've been out here for days now."

Tilting his head some, Lutra listened. So most likely in the lake region. "Any other land marks?" He asked her, nodding for her to join him. He could get them moving in the right direction at least. If she didn't know anything other details, least getting in the right area would jog her memory. Being stuck out here for days... That was a shame, it's been cold. Maybe she hadn't really learned to take care of herself... That's been a common things these days. Lutra wasn't looking down on her. But it was a process he had to go through so he could figure out what she would need. She probably needed a decent meal too.Luckily there would be a patch along the way under a large thick tree where she could feed before they got to far.

"Come, it'll be in this direction. And you'll be able to eat too shortly." He turned and back the way he had come and waited for the mare to join him. He wasn't forceful or pushy. Just focused.

"Well," she began, "I do know that the lake is the smallest one around... And it's got the Kalona territory on one side, and the two-legger village on the other." She thought about Soul for a moment, and wondered if he was looking for her. Her father had kept her close her whole life, and finding a Kalona was just the rebellion she felt she needed. This entire trip was to prove that she could make it on her own, and here she was, being saved by a stranger. How pathetic. She could feel a slight blush flow to her cheeks, but hoped that they'd stay flushed enough from the cold that the stallion wouldn't notice. Guin followed the stallion, becoming less worried and more grateful. "Thank you..."

"Hm... I know that lake." He knew exactly were they were going now. "I don't get up to that area as often as I use too. But I know it." He assured her, slowing to walk next to her, so that the lantern's light to warm her some. "At the fork we'll take a left and just a few minutes down is the grass." He told her. Lutra never judged anyone, he got where he was because he was accepting. But he tried his best to make sure she didn't feel silly. Because it happened to everyone... Truthfully.

"You're very welcome. My name is Lutra. " He glanced over at her. One thing he wasn't the best at was conversation. Spending years walking with little contact with others did that to you. Gave you time to think... How to handle things. The Herd was neutral and had to keep in touch with all the herds in the land. Usdia to Mers to Skin walkers, they had to keep the peace.

"The teepee I live in has been there for a long time. It's possible you've stumbled on it, but you probably haven't met anyone there. I feel I'd have heard about something like this." She pressed her nose against the lantern, surprised by the warmth. The thought of food didn't particularly interest Guin; her hunger was replaced with panic some time before. But she knew she needed to eat, so she didn't say anything.

"It's good to meet you, Lutra." The most conversation she had was with her father's bear, who always followed her around, and she didn't talk back. But something about this stallion made her curious. "So do you always do this? You know, walk around with a light stuck in your mouth?"

Watching as she touched the lantern he knew she wouldn't burn herself. The flame was warm and welcoming. And it never burt anyone, or anything. "I might have." He said indifferently, taking the left at the fork in the road.

"And yes I do. I was raised doing this." He gave her a smile. "And this flame is very important, it guides me to horses like you. " He had the lantern for so long that the glass was tinted green. "My entire herd is based on this."

Guin was so busy staring at the lantern that she nearly missed the turn, but she quickly followed the stallion, nearly stumbling over herself. She huffed a little at herself; her legs were far past numb. How stupid of her to get lost, especially in the middle of the winter.

"You mean stupid, stubborn, naive, clueless idiots who make terrible decisions?" She sighed a little bit and looked at the lantern some more. "How do you keep it going? Do you have a two-legger who puts things in there to burn?"
