The eggs were hard, their shells shining and bright and the proud mothers had been braced for the first official visit by the Candidates. The Touching was a quiet, intimate affair and a time honoured tradition. Crimson Hyweth with her clutch was tucked away in a nook away from the Golden Suunath, whose clutch was in the main area of the Sands. A golden egg sat in the midst of the clutch, of standard size and plain metallic shell but a promising egg nonetheless, it moved quite a bit – as did several of Suunath’s clutch.

The Candidatemasters and their assistants marshaled the Candidates, shuffling them into lines and the usual instructions were given: no lingering, no damaging things, no loud noise… Observing those limits would hopefully maximize exposure while limiting irritation to the female dragons that preside over the clutches.

Touching flows through Suunath’s clutch, through a short tunnel and out into Hyweth’s clutch then away from the Sands.

This Touching is for official IC Candidates ONLY. If your character is not ICly a Candidate of Trine Weyr, please do not post.

Assistant Candidatemasters, feel free to post.

Revel1984 and Thaliawen, feel free to post for your characters.

Please note there are 14 Dragons available. 6 are Staff Customs and/or IRL comms.

Jitterbug Egg - This medium sized gold egg sits towards the center of the clutch, it's neither giant nor small and from size alone little can be estimated. However, this egg moves a lot. That combined with the unmistakeable golden hue of the shell indicated a lively queen inside. When touched there is an overwhelming sense of questions and playfulness - who, what, why, where, when inundates the individual almost to the point of harassment.

The Slender Egg - Unusually long and resting on it's side as thought to fully display this attribute this eggs shell is wonderfully smooth, lacking even the tiny blemishes typically found on eggs. A pale turquoise in color it's an eye catcher even among it's larger brethren. Laying hands on this egg will evoke a sense of cunning and self confidence. You get the feeling that any ill thoughts towards this egg will be less then well received.

The Brown Egg - This egg is brown. To be honest no one could really come up with another way to describe it, placing your hands on this egg gives you the impression that the dragonet inside is merely staring at you blinking. Maybe its just confused about what happening or maybe its just not very bright, Either way it's simple name reflects its rather simple seeming mind and simple earthy colored egg.

The Pacifist Egg – Cream and green with spots. Laying you hands on this egg gives you the feeling that you are being looked after, kindly in tone it's one of the larger eggs in the bunch..though certainly not the largest, it's tilted a bit towards it's smaller brethren as though looking out for them, like an egg babysitter.

The Languid Egg – Cloudy Grey colour. The smallest of Suunath's eggs lays along the outside edge of the clutch leaning inwards towards it's siblings. It seems despite it's separation, the hatchling within longs for company. It welcomes any touch with a lazy hello and a request to stay with it a while. The sand and sun are wonderfully warm are they not? As you leave there is a distinct feeling of regret that fades a little too quickly.

The Head First Egg – Purple speckled egg. It is hard to make sense of the feelings emanating from this moderately sized egg. It jumps upon the presence of any who touch it, at times welcoming, at times aggressively. Any attempts at conversation are met with random remarks, as if the hatchling within is talking to someone else entirely. The only consistent thing about this egg is that it trembles with impatience for the next hand to touch it's shell.

The 'Circles-Within-Circles' Egg – Dark blue with swirls. There is a playfulness, a teasing enthusiasm, within this egg. The moment you make contact with it's shell there is an almost tickling feeling within your mind as the hatchling within pokes through your memories. As soon as it finds what it's looking for, whatever that may be, it seems to switch gears and becomes all energy and movement again. Those who linger might get a blunt comment on something the hatchling saw though.

Play Nice Egg – Mottle Green egg. When it feels a hand on its shell, this tiny egg's resident gives the impression of returning the touch, gentle and curious. Do you need something? Can it help? If it senses an aggressive or deceitful personality, however, it responds with a sense of deep disapproval. How could you?!

Knockabout Egg – Lime Green egg. This egg is one of the largest in the clutch (not that that's saying much). It's also rather active so far as eggs go, and has whacked into all of its neighbors at one point or another. And it is very happy to see you! You're so much more interesting than anything going on in here. ..Ohh, wait, who's that there?

Swelling Egg – Orange fade to yellow egg. When touched, this egg rocks a little - not because it's scared but because it welcomes the inquiry. Its greeting is a swelling flow of positive emotion, gentle and supportive. There is a sense of tranquility about this egg that invites one to step back from the world and enjoy the finer things in life.

Opportune Moment Egg – Plain taupe egg. This egg is carefully weighing each Candidate as they touch it, almost cunningly peeling through obvious answers to find what the motivation is underneath. Unlike some of its siblings, it seems as if this egg has not been moved once since it was placed a bit away from the main Clutch.

Self-Absorbed Egg - Bright blue egg. This egg is ready to be released to the world. When the surface of the egg is touched the Candidate can feel the dragon's breezy impatience at being kept locked away for 'development.' It should be out convincing the world that life is dull and dim and ugly until it arrives. It does not tolerate any kind of cringing self-doubt or self-loathing, so you had best banish all of those thoughts before you touch this egg again or you may be in for sharp surges of remonstrance and anger.

Hyweth

The Shivering Egg – Red with dark stripes. This egg is never still, it shivers, rattles, rolls and shakes in a fashion that might make some think it's about to hatch right now! Placing your hands on the egg certainly inspire a great deal of impatience..this one wants to move, to be elsewhere, right now! But while your lingering around would you mind answering a few questions? Whats your name? Where do you come from? Whats the sun like? A myriad of questions assault you in back to back fashion even as the egg vibrates beneath your hand.

Still Thinking Egg - Fading tristripe egg. Hm. Hm? Oh. Yes, hello. This dragon seems to ruminating on something-- possibly you or the Candidate before you! There is a steady throb to this egg, almost like a heartbeat, and although the dragon inside seems friendly it's clear that it is too distracted with its own thoughts to pay you much mind right now.

The Busy Body Egg – Banded pink egg. This rather large egg has nestled itself cozily into the center of Hyweth's clutch. It is incredibly welcoming to those who touch it, almost overwhelmingly so. How are you? Do you want to talk? Oh you have to go? Well could you tell the Do Not Disturb Egg that that kind of behavior is really just uncalled for?

Look Before You Leap Egg - Set off to the side of its siblings this diminutive egg has an eye-catching blood red shell with pretty pattern of stripes and elongated spots in dark grey. When a candidate touches it they discover that this little egg is assessing them and doing so methodically and with a good deal of cynicism for a creature that hasn't even been born yet. It radiates a fierce pride along with the calculating study it makes of candidates, pride enough to fill a rather large bronze.

Damaged Eardrums Egg – Lavender with teal blush. This medium-small egg is definitely there. Definitely. The moment a candidate touches it they will feel almost overwhelmed by the dragonet's mental presence; this is a loud little one, and not shy about pushing inside a candidate's head to find out all about them!

Misdirect Egg – Jagged grey egg. Why, how lovely of you to stop by, and looking so nice! Did you dress up just for me? This egg's greeting is smooth and brimming with flattery, but some more perceptive Candidates may notice an oily undercurrent to the feelings. While the dragon inside is distracting those who touch its shell with pleasantness, it's also busy rifling through their minds.

Raring To Go Egg - This egg is an eye-searing orange and unmarked. When a candidate touches it they are struck by a very important question: why is this egg still an egg? It's pretty bored of being and egg now thanks, and seems to be actively willing itself to hatch. Once touched however the egg will stop its mental shell-busting attempts to pay attention to the candidate at hand, but only in its own good time of course.

Do Not Disturb Egg – Pale blue egg. This small, pale-shelled egg sits as far away from the others as it can get. Either it doesn't want to be anywhere near its clutchmates, or its clutchmates don't want to be anywhere near it! Either could be the case, or even both. Everyone who touches this egg will find themselves on the receiving end of a sharp mental slap. Go away!

Suunath watched the candidates lining up from her position a little way back from the eggs, far enough back to allow the candidates to move among the eggs without feeling too intimidated but close enough that her presence was felt by every single hopeful coming near her eggs. Her eyes were green for the most part but orange would whirl from time to time as she watched them.

"I do not want them here"

Kindra stood with her Gold, a hand on Suunath's leg as she lay watching. "It's only for a little while, as long as you don't interfere they'll be gone and off to the Crimson's clutch afterwards" she reassured Suunath, or tried to at least. "You laid a Gold Egg my love, you want her to find her match here don't you? You need to let all of the girls touch her shell, Hers will be among them and this makes it easier for her to find Hers when she is hatched" she said with a smile.

"Of course, you think i do not know that?"

"then let them come, they'll be gone soon"

"I do not want those other dragons here"

Kindra sighed. "They have the right to come and see at least Suunath, don't worry, if they come to close i'll have words with their riders" She patted the leg she was leaning against. "Don't worry Suunath, the faster they come and go, the faster we can have our privacy again" her eyes flickered towards the Candidates, she wore a rather plain dress but it was accented in Gold embroidery, as most of her dresses were when she could afford the tailoring. She watched them as closely as Suunath did, letting the Candidatemasters do their job but she was going to have words with those that Upset Suunath in any way.

Medura

Medura was one of the first few candidates to arrive at the touching as she eyed the eggs before her. There was not one, but two clutches. The big pretty Queen's clutch with the shining gold egg and then the smaller crimson clutch which had been shoved off to the side. Eyeing the two a frown tugged at the woman's lips turning into a scowl as she continued to glance between them. She had her distrust in the pretty gilded queen and her pretty gilded clutch. After all it was all too likely the other candidates would flock to that clutch and leave the poor crimson's neglected. It just didn't seem fair that the gold's clutch HAD to be greeted first. Still with little choice Medura approached the clutch giving the Queen and her rider a bow before tentively approaching the Play Nice Egg. The felt warm and the feelings from it were curious and equally welcoming though it felt odd. After all Medura pursued the truth though she certainly could be a bit aggressive.

--------------------------------------------------------

Niyx

Also had been one of the early candidates to arrive not wishing to risk being kicked off the sands for her last hatching. After all she'd kept her head down and her nose clean and done her multitude of extra punishment chores so she'd paid the price. Besides her last hatching hadn't deterred her from wishing to come to this one. After all who was to say her lifemate wasn't here among these eggs? That and no one had gotten hurt last hatching. Of course there was no risk of the dragon's biting until they hatched. This thought drew a low chuckle from Niyx. Of course there was plenty risk of the mother's biting, but as long as she played nice she saw no reason for them to go after her. Besides touchings were such fun. Quirking her head she eyed the two clutches deciding it was best to greey the Queen's clutch and it's gold egg first before moving on.

Padding forward quietly the copper haired girl with her brightly colored clothing adjusted the goggles around her neck and took a low bow before Sunnath and her rider awaiting the Queen's permission before she would move to approach the Jitterbug Egg.

-------------------------------------------
Meroc

Meroc was quick to follow another oddly dressed girl watching as she took her bow before the Queen. He too did so making a low sweeping and rather theatrical gesture grinning ever brightly at rider and dragon before veering away to approach the Knockabout egg. It's bright lime green shell catching his eye. After all he wasn't a girl. There was no point in him approaching the gold egg other then to perhaps pay his respects before he left. Meroc was greatly surprised to find the egg not just warm, but overjoyed to see him catching the harper journeyman off guard for a few seconds before his grin returned twice as big.

Soral looked to the gold queen and bowed his head in respect. He then quietly reached toward the eggs, letting his hand rest on The Languid Egg for a time, looking the shell over, stroking the shell gently with his thumb, then moving to look over The Head First Egg but not quite touching it just yet. He looked over each beautiful egg in awe silently.

I'an was in a particularly good mood this morning, unusual for the candidate assistant. He simply beamed at the candidates outside the hatching sands. "Righto! You're to pay respects to both clutch mothers. Bow to the gold, do not run. Bow to the crimson--" how awkward. I'an had never witnessed a touching with a crimson present--let alone seen a crimson clutch! What was traditional?

"You'll see Suunath's clutch first," he added, pausing when he noted several girls pass him. He crossed his arms, turning to face the three candidates in question. He walked onto the sands, pausing only to wave at Wykla to give her charge. He bowed to Suunath. "I apologize, Suunath. It seems three of my candidates have gone astray without waiting for further instruction."

Shards, what was he supposed to do about this? Several of them had already gone on to the eggs, and he didn't want to upset the gold. Should he correct them? Would he be allowed to invoke punishments afterward?

Once again he stood in front of a clutch of eggs, about to touch each shell and see if an unhatched dragon approved of him. Did he really want to do this? It's true he didn't have a choice. He was a candidate and they expected it of him. The buzzing excitement from those around him did little to help the lanky harper's hidden anxieties.

He took a deep breath and tried to settle himself into resignation. He'd do it. He'd eventually Stand, and maybe if he was lucky he'd get mauled and sent back to the Hall. So long as he didn't lose the use of his hands he'd be content.

Wow, that was dark. Where did that come from?

.......................

Z'fer slipped into the Stands while the Candidatemaster was busy herding the little one's inside. Calanoth was already settled above in the dragon ranks, eyes glowing bright with excitement. Unlike Suunath no anxiety or anger marred his gaze. Z'fer shook his head. He'd be glad when this whole business was over.

He leaned onto the railing, watching as the first few candidates made their choices. With an experienced eye he watched for reactions, putting the vague hearsay knowledge of the children in place with his guesses of egg color.

The antics of one of the assistant candidatemasters brought a frown to his face. The candidates had already been given their instructions. Why was he trying to hold them back any further? He'd better not upset Suunath. Z'fer wouldn't be able to make confident bets if she chased the candidates away before they were finished. That and no doubt Calanoth would get his hackles up as well.

..........

Ailin tried to clear his head of such dark thoughts, mildly alarmed that he'd even thought of something so horrible. He'd seen a mauling last time did he really want that sill body on the Sands to be his?

His approach was stilted and awkward, but eventually he laid his hands on the Slender Egg. It was smooth as metal though warm to the touch. The sense he got from it was a little 'too smart for you' feeling. The cunning personality seemed to almost mock his hesitation and morbid thoughts.

Ailin moved along quickly.

Darsha shifted nervously on the sands, feeling a combination of anxiety, excitement and anticipation warring within her. She squashed the sense of anxiety firmly before she bowed to Suunath. It wouldn't do to have any of the eggs think her weak or frightened. Darsha wasn't really frightened at all, though she imagined everyone else had the same sense of nervous tension she did. Destiny, that was what this was. She had been waiting her entire life for an opportunity like this and now that it was here...

Darsha took a deep breath and smoothed down her tunic before stepping towards her first egg. The slender egg drew her attention first because of its flawless surface, so she approached it and lay a hand on it's warm surface. Confidence. Cleverness. Whoever was living in this egg would be a master at manipulating others, though Darsha wondered if over-confidence would be an issue. The egg seemed to bristle angrily at this thought, though Darsha tried to soothe it by assuring the egg that she, too, suffered from over-confidence at times. This seemed to more or less appease it, and the young girl moved on to the next egg. This was so much more intimidating than she'd expected!

The slightly less big than the big day, but still fairly big day was finally here. Carltis, big and scary looking, managed to get himself a place at the front of one of the lines by dint of looming at others. Rochelle took a place behind him and he turned to grin at her, for once looking genuinely excited with not a hint of angry, bitter, sneering or anything else unpleasant.

At the moment.

There was plenty of time for that to change.

"Here we go then," he murmured to Rochelle.

Once they had received their instructions Carltis headed out onto the Sands... and yes, his expression hardened as his dark eyes settled on the Breeder and her handler. He refrained from snarling or anything else that could get him kicked off the sands though; nobody could shoot him for looking serious now could they? He came to a halt in front of the clutch and gave a stiff little bow to the girl and her lumbering beast before turning his attention to her eggs; where to begin?

Rather than moving forward immediately he glanced over his shoulder to see where Rochelle was.

"We're going to kick butt." Rochelle nodded quite firmly from behind Carltis, rocking back and forth on her heels and her toes. She had a smile wide enough to break her face, if smiles could do such a thing. Say what they want about eggs and colors, she'd not done this before. Back when she lived at Malvren - that whole year - she never Stood.

She all but bounced after her friend and gave the Queen and her rider a low bow, long hair almost brushing the ground. Why not? She was in a good mood. Rohelle looked to the eggs, eyebrows up... and shook her head with a wrinkled nose.

"I'm not touching that gold egg," Rochelle huffed softly, her hand going to poke at Carltis' elbow. Instead, the Brown Egg, resting one small hand on the curve of the shell. Her eyebrows arched at the quiet, head tilting to the side. "Carltis, this is a super quiet egg."

Feden, amongst the well-groomed and ready candidates, likely looked ready to jump out of his skin. Be it in excitement or fear, he wasn't certain. But... dragons! There was certainly every reason to be anxious today! His robes showed the horrid tan lines of his arms, and he nervously smoothed them out as often as possible. The queen and her rider were going to be judging him- of course he was going to try and look his best!

Swallowing his nervousness, Feden stood tall and attempted to look the part of a good candidate. Sure, he was honestly ready to bolt- but nobody needed to know that. At the word, he started slightly- completely unready for the magnitude of this day- but stepped onto the sands with trepidation.

First, a bow. That was the important part. He gave a good and long bow, murmuring a 'thank you' to the queen and her rider both. Couldn't have them thinking him unworthy! If they saw his nervous shiver, well... hopefully they wouldn't comment. Instead, the boy turned to inspect the eggs, and instantly found the one he was drawn to.

The Languid Egg, out on its own, struck a chord with Feden. Goodness knew there were many times he preferred solitude over others' company. Making his way over, Feden laid a hand against the grey shell, and whispered a soft "hello."

Perhaps the dragon couldn't hear him, but... it felt right. And touching the egg... goodness, Feden could see how lovely laying in the sands might be. His nervous exterior faded slightly, and he gave the egg a sheepish smile. Maybe they could spend the day relaxing together. The boy did need a break!

His thoughts returned quickly to himself, however, as Feden pulled away in mild embarrassment, cheeks tinted red.

" 'm sorry, little one," he offered quietly, mind heavy with regret at leaving. Hopefully theirs would take good care of this one, and enjoy the company the dragon offered.

Feden certainly hoped so.

Moving onward, he made his way towards the inner eggs, and found himself guided to the dark blue egg. The Circles-Within-Circles Egg was astounding- how an egg might have such a pattern, Feden would never know. But he was drawn in by the patterns, and laid his hand gently on the surface once more.

He may have giggled at the prodding sensation within his mind. If he did, Feden wouldn't admit it. It was almost as if something was swimming in his head, just... testing the waters. Feden waited, simply content to be in its company, when the thought- not his own- crossed his mind.

Dragons are better than humans. Feden is correct in this assumption, even if he ought to socialize more.

...Shards, he just had to pick the interesting ones, didn't he? Stumbling back slightly, Feden glanced up to the queen, almost searching for an answer within her. Was he meant to be a part of this clutch? He really didn't know anymore.

There were other eggs he'd wanted to touch, certainly, but the two unnerving ones had thrown Feden for a loop. Quickly, he made certain to visit the others, offering them happy thoughts and well wishes, before bowing to the Gold once more, and hurrying off the sands.

Hopefully the other clutch wouldn't confuse him nearly so much.

The scarred harper's dark expression lightened at Rochelle's comment and he gave a little nod. "Too right," he murmured softly so that his words would only be audible to her. "Don't encourage it. Humm?" Brows raising he moved to join his friend (yes, friend, he could say it in the safety of his own head) and laid a hand on the smallish, uniformly coloured thing. He felt as if it... as if it was watching him, staring at him. Slightly perplexed Carltis took his hand away and then replaced it; same reaction.

Straightening back up he shrugged to Rochelle. "Most of them are livelier than that, I swear," he said in an undertone. He then made a small gesture to a nearby egg - small, mottled grey, right on the edge of the clutch - and gave her a quizzical look; that one next? Well that was where he was going; he moved towards it and crouched to place his hand on the shell. The Languid Egg proved to be more welcoming than the blinking brown; it gave him a feeling of contentment, pleasure at the warmth of the sun and sands. Honestly he wasn't sure if a nice dragon like this one seemed to be would want him, or if he could get on with such a creature long term, but it was nice to appreciate its lazy friendliness for a short while. When he pulled his hand away from it he found himself filled with a regret that he was sure wasn't entirely his own. Well too bad little egg, they weren't allowed to hang about for long.

That hadn't been so bad. In fact, that had been downright exhilarating! Darsha felt her anxiety shift and change, moving from the stress over the prospect of her first touching to the anxiety that came from fearing that Hers wasn't here somewhere. What if nobody chose her? That would be devastating. Taking a deep breath, Darsha approached the brown egg. She didn't remain there long, it was clear that the slow mind inside was not meant for her. The pacifist egg was pleasant, and would make someone a solid and comforting companion, but there were no sparks there. Darsha smiled fondly at the pacifist egg as she left it, however, giving it a gentle little pat.

The head first egg was much livelier, and greeted Darsha with a mental touch that felt rather like being knocked down by an excited dog. She smiled, though when she tried to get a better sense of the egg it didn't seem interested in responding to her, rather it went off on some tangent. This was going to be one energetic dragon. She wondered if it would be so easily distracted once it was out of the egg.

Assistant Wykla

Wykla arrived at the time scheduled for the Touching. This was her first time on this side of the Sands, so to speak. Suspicion sat on her shoulder, flicking his tongue at ever candidate that walked by. He was watching. She helped herd the candidates onto the sands, giving the usual warnings and instructions.

Thou shalt not linger.
Thou shalt not damage things.
Thou shalt not speak loudly or make loud noises.
Respect The Mothers.

"Remember bow to Sunnath before approaching her eggs. And it wouldn't hurt to bow to Hyweth when you get to hers too." Her eyes watched the candidates as they headed out onto the sands.

Seeing the Sands fill with candidates made picking his next egg difficult. There were just too many of them and too few eggs. No doubt many would be left disappointed on the Sands. Ailin firmly expected himself to be among their number. Finally, a clear egg. Ailin slipped between a couple candidates leaving and placed his hands on the simple brown shell.

He blinked, physically echoing the feeling he got from the creature inside. There may not be much going on within but Ailin found that rather refreshing. He still recalled the sharp attacks from his last Touching. The feeling of an unknown presence sifting (or ripping as it were) through your thoughts wasn't one he particularly enjoyed. He gave the egg an appreciative pat and left it's side, trying to make his way to the next in his sights.

Plexith loved hatchlings and hatchlings came from eggs and thus the large bronze demanded.. absolutely demanded that they go and have a quick peek during the touching. D'lin had given up the argument as a moot points when Plexith had threatened to go and look on his own and tagged along because hey..everyone likes to look at eggs right?

He wasn't surprised to see Calanoth and Z'fer already present and he left Plexith in the company of the other bronze rather thankful that Plexith no longer cared that said other bronze had beaten him in the flight. All Plexith wanted to see was babies. Big tough bronze was a sap at heart really.

'Am not, I am merely looking over our potential riders.'

'Sure Plex..whatever you say.'

'PlexITH'

D'lin chuckled slightly and made his way towards Z'fer with a polite nod towards Kindra and Sunnath as he went,He ticked his gaze in the direction of the crimsons clutch as well but they were too far away for a proper greeting. His greeting repeated by Plexith who gave the somewhat anxious looking queen a gentle croon of encouragement before letting her be, and while he was not typically a fan of crimsons he sent the crimson mother a few warm thoughts as well.

"So what do you think Z'fer? Bold riders? Meek ones? The clutche's look good, and a Queens egg...Cal must be extra proud."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roscoe Waited patiently as they were given instructions and patiently some more while the Assistants tried to make sure everything was set before allowing them through. It was exciting sure but the eggs would be there no matter what order they went in at and he saw no point in rushing to the front and being a part of the large initial rush.

When they were finally given the final go ahead he walked with purpose towards Sunnath's clutch, giving both gold and her rider a deep and respectful bow. He didn't even look towards the Crimson and her clutch, honestly he didn't even intend to visit them...the mere fact that they existed at all was beyond his ability to deal with. Abominations, mutants..unworthy..were the words that sprang to mind. No he would focus on Sunnath's clutch, Sunnath was a wonderful strong Benden gold and he simply couldn't fathom impressing a dragon from the other.

No point in worrying about it right now however and while he gave the golden egg the respectful touch that it deserved he did not linger at it long, that was for the girls to fawn over. Instead he turned his attention towards the larger of Sunnath's eggs.
